The absolute vacuum is the Mocombeian ontological name for the fifth dimensional probability wavefunction(the world of noumena,i.e.,the in-itself)that gives rise to the material worlds, their facts, relations of ideas, and mathematical principles,we as a species experience. In this article,I utilize Mocombe’s phenomenological structural epistemology emanating out of the aforementioned ontology of the absolute vacuum to refute Kant’s epistemological unknowability of the noumenal world,i.e.,the absolute vacuum in Mocombeian epistemology. 展开更多

Purpose:This study aims to foster a dialog between the experiences and identities of Nigerian female breast cancer survivors and Margaret Newman’s theory of health as expanding consciousness. The theory was employed to explore and describe the structure and meaning of these survivors’experiences and identities.Methods:Twenty-two participants were interviewed using a qualitative approach. The interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim.Data analysis was conducted using NVivo 14 software to identify recurring patterns within the data. Results:Three core themes emerged:(1)Encountering Selfhood-Otherhood in the survivorship journey,(2)navigating the rhythms of change,and(3)living the paradox of order and disorder. These themes reflect the unique and paradoxical rhythm of life as a breast cancer survivor, integrating these experiences conceptually. Conclusions:This study illuminates how Nigerian breast cancer survivors construct the patterns of meaning of their experiences by shifting the focus from solely evidence-based interventions to a deeper exploration of lived experience, cultural narratives, and expanding consciousness.Through compassionate and insightful nursing interactions, women can explore their evolving identities, foster resilience, and redefine their lives in meaningful and fulfilling ways within their unique contexts.Implications for Cancer Survivors:Greater attention is required to address the emotional, temporal, and economic dimensions of breast cancer survivorship in Nigeria.Nurses play a crucial role in helping survivors find meaning in their experiences, recognizing that order and disorder in life are integral to expanding consciousness.Survivors should be empowered to identify their patterns of living and leverage their strengths in navigating the survivorship journey and finding meaning in their lives. 展开更多

Among the existing research on the treatment of disorders of consciousness(DOC),deep brain stimulation(DBS)offers a highly promising therapeutic approach. This comprehensive review documents the historical development of DBS and its role in the treatment of DOC,tracing its progression from an experimental therapy to a detailed modulation approach based on the mesocircuit model hypothesis. The mesocircuit model hypothesis suggests that DOC arises from disruptions in a critical network of brain regions, providing a framework for refining DBS targets. We also discuss the multimodal approaches for assessing patients with DOC,encompassing clinical behavioral scales, electrophysiological assessment, and neuroimaging techniques methods.During the evolution of DOC therapy, the segmentation of central nuclei, the recording of single-neurons,and the analysis of local field potentials have emerged as favorable technical factors that enhance the efficacy of DBS treatment.Advances in computational models have also facilitated a deeper exploration of the neural dynamics associated with DOC,linking neuron-level dynamics with macroscopic behavioral changes.Despite showing promising outcomes, challenges remain in patient selection, precise target localization, and the determination of optimal stimulation parameters.Future research should focus on conducting large-scale controlled studies to delve into the pathophysiological mechanisms of DOC.It is imperative to further elucidate the precise modulatory effects of DBS on thalamo-cortical and cortico-cortical functional connectivity networks.Ultimately,by optimizing neuromodulation strategies,we aim to substantially enhance therapeutic outcomes and greatly expedite the process of consciousness recovery in patients. 展开更多

Consciousness research has been of great concern to philosophers, psychologists and neuroscientists in recent years. At the same time, consciousness has also attracted more and more interest of artificial intelligence (AI) researchers. In order to make more intelligent machines, many computing models of machine consciousness have been presented. Furthermore, self-consciousness has relevance to the level of intelligent functions. Hence, it is necessary to study self-consciousness in AI. This thesis, starting from biological consciousness, discusses some viewpoints of machine consciousness. Based on the discussions, we present a way to emulate self-consciousness and test this method via simulation experiments. Our results indicate that self-consciousness, which belongs to organisms, can he imitated by machines. 展开更多

Information was a frequently used concept in many fields of investigation. However, this concept is still not really understood, when it is referred for instance to consciousness and its informational structure. In this paper it is followed the concept of information from philosophical to physics perspective, showing especially how this concept could be extended to matter in general and to the living in particular, as a result of the intimate interaction between matter and information, the human body appearing as a bipolar informed-matter structure. It is detailed on this way how this concept could be referred to consciousness, and an informational modeling of consciousness as an informational system of the human body is presented. Based on the anatomic architecture of the organism and on the inference of the specific information concepts, it is shown that the informational system of the human body could be described by seven informational subsystems, which are reflected in consciousness as corresponding cognitive centers. These results are able to explain the main properties of consciousness, both the cognitive and extra-cognitive properties of the mind, like that observed during the near-death experiences and other similar phenomena. Moreover, the results of such a modeling are compared with the existing empirical concepts and models on the energetic architecture of the organism, showing their relevance for the understanding of consciousness. 展开更多

PHILOSOPHY and PSYCHIATRY are unusual bedfellows.Medical students, already hard pressed for time, are generally thrust into the melee of mental disorders, having spent years focussing on first dissecting and then prodding human bodies, which too often leaves little room for evaluating theories about human nature, especially with respect to“Intent”or Free Will. The present writer was unusual in that having spent two years in pre-clinical medical training,he devoted a full university year to pursuing philosophical studies in up to 20 different university departments. Thus he entered his teaching hospital with a working knowledge of Hume,Kant,Sartre,Wittgenstein,Buber and others. This is not a clinical paper-it focuses on the reasoning behind psychiatric precepts-so it is perhaps inevitable that today’s prevailing ideology is shown to be grievously wanting-a case of decidedly unphilosophical, even anti-philosophical,medical practice. The notion of there ever being a“scientific”theory of psychiatry has already been discounted in a series of earlier papers-which leaves us with the responsibility for choosing the best possible option, from an infinite number of theoretical models available. The paper provides a whistle-stop tour of how mental disease looks if you start with a confident and consistent look at that pinnacle of human attributes-consciousness.It doesn’t presume to say what consciousness is,but it does assume that it has a function, like every other human asset.Indeed by cutting corners, evaluating what has worked over 60 years in psychiatry, the result is as straightforward a picture of sanity as one can reasonably expect. As such,it leaves the reader with little wriggle room-there is enough clarity here, for you to accept or reject the main proposition. However, since the flaws described tend to be lethal, acceptance entails action. Now read on. 展开更多

PartⅠ, entitled ' Nabokov’ s Women,' concentrates on the analysis of Nabokov’ s major women identities of different types. My purpose is to demonstrate that in his creation of the women characters, Nabokov’ s political consciousness—mainly his vindication of individual freedom—is unmistakably, although indirectly, exemplified. Due to the different types of women discussed in this study, and also due to the different aspect of his political consciousness that is emphasized in different women identities, this part is subdivided into three chapters. Chapter One, entitled 'Women in the Triangle: Martha and Margot,' focuses on the two women characters in Nabokov’ s early novels. King, Queen, Knave and Laughter in the Dark, aiming to provide an in-depth analysis of the two, and to show that Nabokov has be stowed his special purpose on the creation of Martha and Margot, that is, his condemnation on those who reduce the free and active individual into objects, and such condemnation echoing with Nabokov’ s later direct vindication of individual freedom. Chapter Two, entitled 'The Eternal Feminine:Lolita and Ada,' analyzes the two title characters in Lolita and Ada, or Ardor:A Family Chronicle, illustrating that Lolita is the victim in that her free consciousness is purposefully neglected by the other, man in that case;while Ada enjoys her life totally because she can conduct her free consciousness in her own life. Chapter Three, entitled ' Other Types and Women in His Mind’ s Eye,' deals with Elisabeth, another woman character in Laughter in the Dark, who is a good traditional wife, and Liza, ex-wife of Pnin in Pnin, who is what Nabokov terms as poshlost. In addition, this chapter also provides an examination of Nabokov’ s attitude toward women. Through this analysis, Nabokov’ s Russian Complex is to a degree illustrated. 展开更多

Jane Eyre, rebellious woman in the Victorian Age,holds her remarkable status in the English literature as the one who dare to fight against the patriarchal society.Unlike her contemporaries,Jane Eyre believes that men and women are born to be equal and women should never be tamed by the male-centered world or feminist ego.Under the tremendous pressure, she still guards her own dignity and determines to achieve self-actualization instead of being an accessory of men. It’s her female consciousness that lead her to be an unusual figure that enjoys both the financial self-reliance and social equality.Self-respect,selfreliance and self-actualization comprise Jane’s female consciousness that is instructive to women and worths a further exploration. 展开更多

Experimental approach to investigation of NLCI (Non-local Consciousness Influence) effects is based on sensors of different design, and most of it based on transitional effects in gas-discharge plasma with several quasi-stable states is also presented. Computerized device for detecting NLCI is based on commercially available Gas Discharge Camera (www.ktispb.ru) and allows following time dynamics of several sensors in NLCI conditions. The typical sensors are: water, air, earth, and wood, this instrument was named "The 5th Element". Readings are taken continuously by special software every five or ten seconds in automatic mode. Sensitivity of the device was tested by detecting the influence of total sun eclipse in Siberia in 2008 and by detecting sunrise and sunset. Several experimental modalities have been developed: (1) directed NLCI of a person; (2) directed NLCI of a group of people; and (3) non-directed NLCI of a group of people. Experiments during many years demonstrated efficiency of the developed approach. 展开更多

Nature of Valuational Consciousness in Good Life

I make an attempt in the paper to argue in favor of the person-centered view of good life, where becoming a good person involves seeking to qualitatively transform oneself into a worthy human being. I maintain that becoming fully a person and respecting others as persons are achievements that are not assured for all of us. Thus, for the purpose I prepare the ground for an account of good life that rests on valuational consciousness. I propose that one may ascribe valuational consciousness to a person who is a value-sensitive rational being striving to attain a kind of inner transparency. Evidently, to say that a person has valuational consciousness is to stress the values, which are built into personal consciousness. The life of a person, whether that of truth, courage, nobility, justice, kindness, is a life marked by ego transcending personal consciousness that reaches out to humanity at large. And such a repository of values enables a human being to attain the ideal of good life. The ideal of good life, I contend, consists of attaining the higher order posture of selflessness--a posture of inner transparency. It is to shake off the egocentric partiality that characterizes our usual attitudinal stance towards one another. 展开更多

This article highlights the equation, the Garyian equation,Φ=10⁻15 eV(4)±f(0),for individual consciousness within Paul C.Mocombe’s consciousness field theory.Within the latter theory,Mocombe posits that consciousness is a fifth force of nature, and individual consciousness is a resonating channel or station on the earth’s Schumann wave that is connected to the absolute vacuum,i.e.,nonlocal space where all the elementary particles exist in a cosmic soup as a probability wave function that produces entangled and superimposed worlds, with Schumann waves, and objects and subjects with consciousness transmitted from it,the absolute vacuum, via its elementary particle, psychion. 展开更多

Phenomenal Consciousness, Self-Consciousness and Animal Suffering

In this article I will confront Antonio Damasio's theory (exposed in his last book Self Comes to Mind) with the criticism it received from Ned Block. The latter holds that Damasio does not distinguish the concepts of phenomenal consciousness and self-consciousness and this has two kinds of consequences. One is that it cannot satisfactorily explain certain mental states (dreams, vegetative states); the other is that it has harmful consequences for animal ethics. I maintain that to compare the two theories we can only rely on our pre-theoretical intuition of consciousness. Thus, I argue that Dam^tsio's theory combines more with our intuitions. One of the reasons is that the cases that Block describes as phenomenal consciousness without access consciousness (and without self-consciousness) are best explained as being cases of mind without consciousness. Dam^sio's theory can also explain those referred cases which are theoretically problematic. Moreover, Dam^isio has a threshold model (an expression by Barry Dainton), which is something that Block seems to ignore. This model fits well with the intuitions and neurological knowledge that we normally have on animal consciousness. Dam^isio's core self and his theory of emotions and feelings allow us to understand why we feel compassion for animals. Therefore, we are able to develop an animal ethics, which does not mean that we are required to do so. So even though Damasio does not solve the mystery of consciousness, he should not be the subject of Block's criticism. 展开更多

The condition of pharmacologically induced unconsciousness that renders a patient unresponsive to uncomfortable surgical stimuli is known as general anesthesia. When it is used for surgery, a fairly rare but traumatizing state known as anesthesia awareness might develop. What is the probability that a patient can be awake, conscious, and able to hear the surroundings and experience excruciating pain but be immobilized to communicate it during surgery? According to estimates, there are 1 to 2 cases for every 1000 patients who experience this phenomenon and retain various sensory information after general anesthesia was applied. Even with seemingly effective anesthetic care, emerging consciousness states during anesthesia are reported and often come with various degrees of memory loss mechanisms. Some researchers and the experiments covered in this paper suggest anesthesia is merely a memory loss or poorly understood neurological form of amnesia induced during the event itself and not a loss of consciousness per se during the traumatic event, as suggested by studies described in this article. In some instances, the agony may be unbearable, with long-term neuropsychiatric effects such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Although the neurobiological phenomenon of consciousness regained during anesthesia is still poorly understood, these continuously reported events carry significant medical and legal ramifications. The numerous contributing elements that may increase the risk of intraoperative raised levels of consciousness are gathered, analyzed, and discussed in this research study. Preventive methods for both preinduction and intraoperative usage, as well as corrective actions to take after such occurrences, are also discussed. 展开更多
