Previous studies have applied tones, the subject's name and other names as stimuli. However, the results were not satisfactory. In this study, we changed the constituent order of subjects' two-character names to create derived names. The subject's derived names, together with tones and their own names, were used as auditory stimuli in event-related potential experiments. Healthy controls and unconscious patients were included in this study and made to listen to these auditory stimuli. In the two paradigms, a sine tone followed by the subject's own name and the subject's derived name followed by the subject's own name were used as standard and deviant stimuli, respectively. The results showed that all healthy controls had the P300 using both paradigms, and that the P300 in the second paradigm had a longer latency and two peaks. All minimally conscious state patients had the P300 in the first paradigm and the majority of them had the P300 in the second paradigm. Most vegetative state patients had no P300. Patients who showed the P300 in the two paradigms had more residual consciousness, and patients with the two-peak P300 had a higher probability of awakening within a short time. Our experimental findings suggest that the P300 event-related potential could reflect the conscious state of unconscious patients.展开更多

At the same time, consciousness has also attracted more and more interest of artificial intelligence (AI) researchers. In order to make more intelligent machines, many computing models of machine consciousness have been presented. Furthermore, self-consciousness has relevance to the level of intelligent functions. Hence, it is necessary to study self-consciousness in AI. This thesis, starting from biological consciousness, discusses some viewpoints of machine consciousness. Based on the discussions, we present a way to emulate self-consciousness and test this method via simulation experiments. Our results indicate that self-consciousness, which belongs to organisms, can he imitated by machines.展开更多

Severe acquired brain injuries resulting in a disorder of con-sciousness(DOC) provide a model from which insights into consciousness can be drawn. A number of recent studies highlight the difficulty in making a diagnosis in patients with DOC based only on behavioral assessments. Here we aim to provide an overview of how neuroimaging techniques can help assess patients with DOC. Such techniques are expected to facilitate a more accurate understanding of brain function in states of unconsciousness and to improve the evaluation of thepatient's cognitive abilities by providing both diagnostic and prognostic indicators.展开更多

However, this concept is still not really understood, when it is referred for instance to consciousness and its informational structure. In this paper it is followed the concept of information from philosophical to physics perspective, showing especially how this concept could be extended to matter in general and to the living in particular, as a result of the intimate interaction between matter and information, the human body appearing as a bipolar informed-matter structure. It is detailed on this way how this concept could be referred to consciousness, and an informational modeling of consciousness as an informational system of the human body is presented. Based on the anatomic architecture of the organism and on the inference of the specific information concepts, it is shown that the informational system of the human body could be described by seven informational subsystems, which are reflected in consciousness as corresponding cognitive centers. These results are able to explain the main properties of consciousness, both the cognitive and extra-cognitive properties of the mind, like that observed during the near-death experiences and other similar phenomena. Moreover, the results of such a modeling are compared with the existing empirical concepts and models on the energetic architecture of the organism, showing their relevance for the understanding of consciousness.展开更多

PartⅠ, entitled ' Nabokov’ s Women,' concentrates on the analysis of Nabokov’ s major women identities of different types. My purpose is to demonstrate that in his creation of the women characters, Nabokov’ s political consciousness—mainly his vindication of individual freedom—is unmistakably, although indirectly, exemplified. Due to the different types of women discussed in this study, and also due to the different aspect of his political consciousness that is emphasized in different women identities, this part is subdivided into three chapters. Chapter One, entitled 'Women in the Triangle: Martha and Margot,' focuses on the two women characters in Nabokov’ s early novels. King, Queen, Knave and Laughter in the Dark, aiming to provide an in-depth analysis of the two, and to show that Nabokov has be stowed his special purpose on the creation of Martha and Margot, that is, his condemnation on those who reduce the free and active individual into objects, and such condemnation echoing with Nabokov’ s later direct vindication of individual freedom. Chapter Two, entitled 'The Eternal Feminine:Lolita and Ada,' analyzes the two title characters in Lolita and Ada, or Ardor:A Family Chronicle, illustrating that Lolita is the victim in that her free consciousness is purposefully neglected by the other, man in that case;while Ada enjoys her life totally because she can conduct her free consciousness in her own life. Chapter Three, entitled ' Other Types and Women in His Mind’ s Eye,' deals with Elisabeth, another woman character in Laughter in the Dark, who is a good traditional wife, and Liza, ex-wife of Pnin in Pnin, who is what Nabokov terms as poshlost. In addition, this chapter also provides an examination of Nabokov’ s attitude toward women. Through this analysis, Nabokov’ s Russian Complex is to a degree illustrated.展开更多

文摘Among the existing research on the treatment of disorders of consciousness(DOC),deep brain stimulation(DBS)offers a highly promising therapeutic approach. This comprehensive review documents the historical development of DBS and its role in the treatment of DOC,tracing its progression from an experimental therapy to a detailed modulation approach based on the mesocircuit model hypothesis. The mesocircuit model hypothesis suggests that DOC arises from disruptions in a critical network of brain regions, providing a framework for refining DBS targets. We also discuss the multimodal approaches for assessing patients with DOC,encompassing clinical behavioral scales, electrophysiological assessment, and neuroimaging techniques methods.During the evolution of DOC therapy, the segmentation of central nuclei, the recording of single-neurons,and the analysis of local field potentials have emerged as favorable technical factors that enhance the efficacy of DBS treatment.Advances in computational models have also facilitated a deeper exploration of the neural dynamics associated with DOC,linking neuron-level dynamics with macroscopic behavioral changes.Despite showing promising outcomes, challenges remain in patient selection, precise target localization, and the determination of optimal stimulation parameters.Future research should focus on conducting large-scale controlled studies to delve into the pathophysiological mechanisms of DOC.It is imperative to further elucidate the precise modulatory effects of DBS on thalamo-cortical and cortico-cortical functional connectivity networks.Ultimately,by optimizing neuromodulation strategies,we aim to substantially enhance therapeutic outcomes and greatly expedite the process of consciousness recovery in patients.

文摘Consciousness research has been of great concern to philosophers, psychologists and neuroscientists in recent years. Our results indicate that self-consciousness, which belongs to organisms, can he imitated by machines.

文摘Consciousness is a prismatic and ambiguous concept that still eludes any universal definition. Such techniques are expected to facilitate a more accurate understanding of brain function in states of unconsciousness and to improve the evaluation of thepatient's cognitive abilities by providing both diagnostic and prognostic indicators.

文摘Elucidation of critical brain areas or structures that are responsible for recovery of impaired consciousness in patients with disorders of consciousness is important because it can provide information that is useful when developing therapeutic strategies for neurorehabilitation or neurointervention in patients with disorders of consciousness. In this review, studies that have demonstrated brain changes during recovery of impaired consciousness were reviewed. These studies used positron emission tomography,electroencephalography/transcranial magnetic stimulation, diffusion tensor tractography, and diffusion tensor tractography/electroencephalography.The majority of these studies reported on the importance of supratentorial areas or structures in the recovery of impaired consciousness. The important brain areas or structures that were identified were the prefrontal cortex, basal forebrain, anterior cingulate cortex, and parietal cortex. These results have a clinically important implication that these brain areas or structures can be target areas for neurorehabilitation or neurointervention in patients with disorders of consciousness. However, most of studies were case reports;therefore, further original studies involving larger numbers of patients with disorders of consciousness are warranted. In addition, more detailed information on the brain areas or structures that are relevant to the recovery of impaired consciousness is needed.
文摘Consciousness is one of the unique features of creatures, and is also the root of biological intelligence.Up to now,all machines and robots havenJt had consciousness. Then, will the artificial intelligence(AI)be conscious? Will robots have real intelligence without consciousness? The most primitive consciousness is the perception and expression of selfexistence. In order to perceive the existence of the concept of‘Ij,a creature must first have a perceivable boundary such as skin to separate‘I’from‘non-1’.For robots,to have the self-awareness,they also need to be wrapped by a similar sensory membrane.Nowadays,as intelligent tools,AI systems should also be regarded as the external extension of human intelligence. These tools are unconscious. The development of AI shows that intelligence can exist without consciousness. When human beings enter into the era of life intelligence from AI,it is not the AI became conscious, but that conscious lives will have strong AI.Therefore,it becomes more necessary to be careful on applying AI to living creatures, even to those lower-level animals with only consciousness. The subversive revolution of such application may produce more careful thinking.
文摘Information was a frequently used concept in many fields of investigation. Moreover, the results of such a modeling are compared with the existing empirical concepts and models on the energetic architecture of the organism, showing their relevance for the understanding of consciousness.
文摘PHILOSOPHY and PSYCHIATRY are unusual bedfellows.Medical students, already hard pressed for time, are generally thrust into the melee of mental disorders, having spent years focussing on first dissecting and then prodding human bodies, which too often leaves little room for evaluating theories about human nature, especially with respect to“Intent”or Free Will. The present writer was unusual in that having spent two years in pre-clinical medical training,he devoted a full university year to pursuing philosophical studies in up to 20 different university departments. Thus he entered his teaching hospital with a working knowledge of Hume,Kant,Sartre,Wittgenstein,Buber and others. This is not a clinical paper-it focuses on the reasoning behind psychiatric precepts-so it is perhaps inevitable that today’s prevailing ideology is shown to be grievously wanting-a case of decidedly unphilosophical, even anti-philosophical,medical practice. The notion of there ever being a“scientific”theory of psychiatry has already been discounted in a series of earlier papers-which leaves us with the responsibility for choosing the best possible option, from an infinite number of theoretical models available. The paper provides a whistle-stop tour of how mental disease looks if you start with a confident and consistent look at that pinnacle of human attributes-consciousness.It doesn’t presume to say what consciousness is,but it does assume that it has a function, like every other human asset.Indeed by cutting corners, evaluating what has worked over 60 years in psychiatry, the result is as straightforward a picture of sanity as one can reasonably expect. As such,it leaves the reader with little wriggle room-there is enough clarity here, for you to accept or reject the main proposition. However, since the flaws described tend to be lethal, acceptance entails action. Now read on.
文摘This study consists of three parts. Through this analysis, Nabokov’ s Russian Complex is to a degree illustrated.
