Strong provincial capital is an important initiative for underdeveloped regions to realize rapid regional economic development through leading by point, which is related to the overall situation of China's economic high-quality development. This paper theoretically analyzes the internal mechanism of strong provincial capitals affecting regional innovation efficiency. The study finds that the policy of strong provincial capitals promotes the formation of the resource aggregation effect in the capital cities, attracts talents, technologies, policies, and capital and other factors, improves the efficiency and quality of innovation, and drives the development of neighboring regions.However,over-implementation of the policy will lead to a large number of big enterprises,"which will lead to rent-seeking,waste of resources, crowding out of government subsidies and congestion effects, inhibit innovation, and lead to the loss of innovation factors in peripheral cities, dragging down the innovation level of the whole province. Therefore, the relationship between strong provincial capitals and innovation is an inverted"U"shape, and this study is of great significance for understanding the double-edged sword effect of strong provincial capitals and formulating scientific regional innovation policies. 展开更多

Accurate measurement of urban sprawl is vital for urban planning and management.Urban planning-induced internal structure complexity affects the extent of urban sprawl. In addition, urban sprawl is closely linked to economic development. The study attempts to explore the impact of urban sprawl from an economic-dominated perspective. Thus a City-Ring road-County(CRC)scale framework based on top-down administrative divisions for urban sprawl measurement is proposed:1)the single-index measurement based on economic activity is applied to calculate urban sprawl;2)the spatiotemporal pattern of urban sprawl is investigated through a case study in 31 economy-dominated provincial capital cities across China from 2005 to 2015;3)the impact of economy and land on urban sprawl is explored using correlation analysis. The results indicate that the degree of urban sprawl at the city scale shows an“inverted U-shaped”curve from 2005 to 2015,which represents that the phenomenon of urban sprawl was most severe in 2010.It finds that urban sprawl was more severe in the east and central regions relative to the provincial capitals in the western region, with the situation being most severe in the northeast region.Regions that have been transformed from suburban to urban built-up areas need to be given priority attention by the local government, including population movement, land layout, and fiscal policy,to meet the criteria of the urbanization process.Through correlation analysis,we also found that urban sprawl was influenced by the industry structure and the form of built-up area. The outcome of the study suggests that the data scale is sufficiently small in granularity to provide geographic boundaries for systematic analysis of urban sprawl in multiple administrative regions. Thus, the study helps provide a reference for differential planning policy formulation by governments at diverse economic levels. 展开更多

The topic can be summarized in three interconnected aspects; historical starting point, contemporary vision, and world insight. The historical starting point requires the study of ancient Chinese capitals to abide by rigid academic principles and must be based on historical facts. Contemporary vision refers to the obligation to contribute to contemporary society and civilization through ancient Chinese capital research. World insight expresses our need of an integral and systematic concept to correctly assess the historical status and role of ancient Chinese capitals in the larger context to unveil the unique cultural values and historical significance of ancient capitals across China. Chengdu is an ideal case for us to explore new research approaches from the above three aspects. 展开更多

It is intellectual capital. Because intellectual capitals increase GDP of nations, and create wealthfor nations. ICs have accumulated knowledge, and ICs make innovations for company via this knowledge. Forexample, American economy has full of ICs, corporate CEOs. CEOs make country rich. CEOs are intellectualcapital. For example, Steve Jobs created smart phone, and Apple becomes no.1 in markets. Therefore, ICs(corporate CEOs) make a country richer. Mathematical modeling of precipitation is an important step to understand the precipitation patterns, and paves the way to possibly predict the precipitation. In this study, we attempt to use the random walk model to fit the annual precipitation in 49 European capitals from 1901 to 1998. At first, we used the simplest random walk model to fit the precipitation walk, which is the conversion of recorded precipitations into ±1 format, and then we used a more complex random walk model to fit the recorded precipi-tations. The results show that the random walk models can fit both precipitation walk and re-corded precipitation. Thus this study provides a model to describe the precipitation patterns during this period in these cities. 展开更多

Imperial city and outer city are the most important differentiation of the spatial structure of ancient Chinese capitals. The relationship between city and Guo changed from the original spatial structure mode of "respecting the west" and "sitting in the west and facing the east" to the spatial structure mode of "sitting in the north and facing the south" and the three outer cities in the east, south and west surrounding the imperial city after the Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties, and gradually changed from the original "multi palace" system to the "single palace" system. Finally,a "heavy city" capital spatial structure with the outer city around the imperial city and the imperial city around the palace city, and the central axis of the chessboard format was formed.During the Tang and Song Dynasties,it was a period of great change in the history of feudal society in China.Through the investigation of the evolution characteristics of the spatial form of capital cities in the Tang and Song Dynasties, the track of the transformation of social ideology, political system, economic structure and many other fields in the Tang and Song Dynasties was made clear. 展开更多

Democracy and the Need for“Healthy Moral Selves”

A fairly precise vision of a healthy physical self can serve as motivation for undertaking the means to that end.The same cannot be said with regard to“healthy moral selves”.By definition, democracy is about living with others and,as we argue,a healthy moral self is one that lives well with others. However, precisely what“living with others”entails is ambiguous, particularly in a capitalist economy that presumes that the greatest happiness results from antagonistic competitiveness. In an attempt to demystify how self-focused individuals may nonetheless thrive in“the space between”,we will examine, with the help of Kant and Foucault, the Enlightenment Project that promoted maximal reasonableness(or what we are referring to as“healthy moral selves”)and then, with the help of Steven Pinker and Alisdair MacIntyre, explore the factors that have led to its seeming relatively recent failure. We will argue, following Iris Murdoch and others, that the best hope for its revitalization, and with it,democracy, lies,on one hand, with the debunking of counterfeit moral selves who use a“moral stance”to deliver what Frankfurt refers to as“bullshit”,and,on the other, with the reinvigoration of our understanding that healthy moral selves require a steady diet of engaging in“objective practical reasoning”with those who think differently, thereby potentially starving our fat relentless egos that are so often the source of divisiveness and,in so doing, become happy by becoming worthy of being happy. In animating the value of this goal, the hope is that the means,i.e.,education for the reinvigoration of practical reason(the forgotten twin of theoretical reason)and genuine deliberative dialogue across difference will become sufficiently attractive that it will energize democratic practice and dialogue to such an extent that democracy,as a form of government, may yet flourish despite the atomizing forces of capitalism. 展开更多

Mindfulness would enhance university students’emotional well-being and study engagement. However, the role of affect(positive and negative emotions)and psychological resources(psychological capital)linking mindfulness to study engagement remain underexplored. This cross-sectional study surveyed 688 Chinese university students(females=413,mean age=20.3,SD=0.83),using validated self-report measures of mindfulness, positive and negative emotions, psychological capital, and study engagement.Structural equation modeling and bias-corrected bootstrap analyses(5000 resamples)revealed that mindfulness directly enhanced positive emotions, psychological capital, and study engagement, while reducing negative emotions.Positive emotions partially mediated the positive effect of mindfulness on psychological capital and study engagement.Negative emotions partially and negatively mediated only the mindfulness-psychological capital link.Psychological capital independently mediated the mindfulness-engagement relationship, and two sequential mediation pathways emerged:(a)mindfulness→positive emotions→psychological capital→higher study engagement and(b)mindfulness→reduced negative emotions→psychological capital→higher study engagement.Consistent with broaden-and-build(B&B)theory and Conservation of Resources(COR)theory, these findings suggest that mindfulness fosters study engagement primarily by promoting positive emotional experiences and strengthening psychological capital.By implication, university student support programs should employ mindfulness-based interventions to cultivate emotional and psychological resources for higher students’engagement and overall well-being. 展开更多

This study examines the mediating role of positive psychological capital and the moderating role of ethnicity in the relationship between mindfulness and internalizing/externalizing problems among adolescents. The study sample comprized Chinese adolescents(N=637 ethnic minority;females=40.97%,meam age=12.68,SD=0.49 years;N=636 Han;females=49.06%,mean age=12.71,SD=0.47 years). The participants completed the Child and Adolescent Mindfulness Measure, the Positive Psycap Questionnaire, and the Youth Self-Report.Results from the moderated mediation analysis showed mindfulness was negatively associated with both internalizing and externalizing problems.Ethnicity moderated the relationship between mindfulness and internalizing problems to be stronger for Han adolescents compared to ethnic minority adolescents.Psychological capital mediated the relationship between mindfulness and internalizing problems in both groups, with a negative direction.Findings support the Conservation of Resources theory and highlight mindfulness as a personal resource fostering adolescent well-being in multicultural contexts. 展开更多

By comparing the growth trajectories of East Asia and Latin America, this study finds that during industrialization,East Asian economies actively advanced their manufacturing sectors toward high-end production and achieved a higher relative density of high-skilled labor within this sector. In contrast,Latin American economies experienced a“low-end lock-in”in manufacturing, with high-skilled labor more heavily concentrated in the service sector. To provide a unified explanation of these patterns of industrial transformation and labor allocation, this paper develops a three-sector general equilibrium model that includes basic manufacturing(BM),high-end manufacturing(HM),and services, and incorporates labor heterogeneity. The model captures how, under different development thresholds for HM,the allocation of high-skilled labor across sectors leads to two distinct structural transformation paths:from BM to HM,or from BM to services. These paths,in turn, generate different trajectories of human capital accumulation and economic growth performance.Simulation analysis shows that dynamically adjusted industrial policies are more effective than static ones, and that combining education policy with industrial policy yields better outcomes than either policy alone. This study extends theoretical research on industrial structural transformation, highlights the importance of HM for latecomer economies, and offers theoretical underpinnings and decision-making insights for advancing new industrialization and deepening integration between industrial and talent chains. 展开更多

Wave energy is a promising form of marine renewable energy that offers a sustainable pathway for electricity generation in coastal regions.Despite Malaysia’s extensive coastline, the exploration of wave energy in Sarawak remains limited due to economic, technical, and environmental challenges that hinder its implementation.Compared to other renewable energy sources, wave energy is underutilized largely because of cost uncertainties and the lack of local performance data. This research aims to identify themost suitable coastal zone in Sarawak that achieves an optimal balance between energy potential,cost-effectiveness,and environmental impact, particularly in relation to infrastructure and regional development. The findings indicate that wave energy generation in Sarawak is technically feasible based on MOGA analysis.Among the studied sites,Bintulu emerged as the most balanced option, with a levelized cost of electricity(LCOE)of 0.778–0.864 USD/kWh and a CO_(2) emission factor as low as 0.019–0.020 CO_(2)/k Wh.Miri, while producing lower emissions than Sematan, recorded a higher LCOE of 1.045 USD/kWh with moderate emissions at 0.029 CO_(2)/kWh.Sematan,characterized by weaker wave conditions and higher installation penalties, resulted in the least favorable outcome, with an LCOE of 3.735 USD/kWh.Bintulu’s strategic location reduces CAPEX requirements, making it the most suitable site for large-scale wave energy deployment in Sarawak. 展开更多
