The difference between homogeneous and bubbling fluidization behaviors has been studied for the past 70 years, where several researchers have reported on the influence of interparticle forces in fluidization. Although interparticle forces such as van der Waals forces are evident in a real system, these forces are not the determinant in homogeneous fluidization, which can be simulated without any interparticle forces. In our previous study, the difference in fundamental mechanisms of the two fluidization states was analytically determined with a dimensionless gravity term, comprising the Reynolds number, Archimedes number, and density ratio. Nevertheless, some researchers insist that interparticle forces are dominant and a hydrodynamic force is not dominant. In this study, a dimensional analysis was applied to obtain a dominant parameter for distinguishing two fluidizations. Furthermore, some parameters were examined by comparing the experimental data in previous studies. The results indicated that hydrodynamic force is the dominant factor and the dimensionless gravity term is the dominant parameter in differentiating the two fluidized states. 展开更多

From the perspective of facilitating the design of fluidized hydrogen reduction reactors for iron ore powder and maintaining stable operation, the operational conditions and bubble behavior in stable state fluidization of multi-particle size systems were investigated through cold-state experiments. To facilitate the identification of bubble behavior,a two-dimensional bubbling bed cold-state experiment was carried out using iron ore powder with a narrow particle size distribution and glass beads.Initially, the multi-stage fluidization characteristics of iron ore powder were examined. Then, using Geldart B-type glass beads to simulate a multi-particle size composition system, the particle size range and superficial gas velocity range for stable operation of the multi-particle composition system were explored. When the mass percentage of 150-μm glass beads was 15%,the stable fluidization operational gas velocity range was found to be(1.05-1.21)umf,where umf is the minimum fluidization velocity;when the content was 20%,the stable fluidized superficial gas velocity range was(1.09-1.26)umf.Under stable fluidization operating conditions, the dynamic behavior of bubbles(average equivalent diameter, rising velocity, and lateral migration velocity)was studied, and the quantitative relationship between the average equivalent diameter of bubbles and bed height in multi-particle size systems under stable fluidization conditions was also corrected.Additionally, the correlation between bubble rising velocity and bubble average equivalent diameter was established. 展开更多

A Markov chain-based stochastic model (MCM) is developed to simulate the movement of particles in a 2D bubbling fluidized bed (BFB). The state spaces are determined by the discretized physical cells of the bed, and the transition probability matrix is directly calculated by the results of a discrete element method (DEM) simulation. The Markov property of the BFB is discussed by the comparison results calculated from both static and dynamic transition probability matrices. The static matrix is calculated based on the Markov chain while the dynamic matrix is calculated based on the memory property of the particle movement. Results show that the difference in the trends of particle movement between the static and dynamic matrix calculation is very small. Besides, the particle mixing curves of the MCM and DEM have the same trend and similar numerical values, and the details show the time averaged characteristic of the MCM and also expose its shortcoming in describing the instantaneous particle dynamics in the BFB. 展开更多

Mesoscale bubbles exist inherently in bubbling fluidized beds and hence should be considered in the constitutive modeling of the drag force. The energy minimization multiscale bubbling(EMMS/bubbling)drag model takes the effects of mesoscale structures(i.e.,bubbles)into the modeling of drag coefficient and thus improves the coarse-grid simulation of bubbling and turbulent fluidized beds. However, its dependence on the bubble diameter correlation has not been thoroughly investigated. The hydrodynamic disparity between homogeneous and heterogeneous fluidization is accounted for by the heterogeneity index,H_(d),which can be affected by choice of bubble diameter correlation. How this choice of bubble diameter correlation influences the model prediction calls for further fundamental research. This article incorporated seven different bubble diameter correlations into EMMS/bubbling drag model and studied their effects on H_(d).The performance of these correlations has been compared with the correlation used previously by EMMS/bubbling drag model. We found that some of the correlations predicted lower Hd by order of a magnitude than the correlation used by the original EMMS/bubbling drag.Based on such analysis,we proposed a modification in the EMMS drag model for bubbling and turbulent fluidized beds.A computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulation using two-fluid model with the modified EMMS/bubbling drag model was performed for two bubbling and one turbulent fluidized beds.Voidage distribution, time averaged solid concentration and axial solid concentration profiles were studied and compared with the previous version of the EMMS/bubbling drag model and experimental data.We found that the right choice of bubble diameter correlations can significantly improve the results for CFD simulations. 展开更多

In order to study the effect of agitation on the characteristics of air dense medium fluidization, we designed and constructed an agitation device. Analyses were then conducted on the fluidization characteristics curves, the bed density stability and the average bubble rise velocity Uaunder different agitation conditions. The results indicated that a lower bed pressure drop(without considering lower gas velocity in a fixed bed stage) and higher minimum fluidized velocity are achieved with increasing agitation speed. The height d(distance between the lower blades and air distribution plate) at which the agitation paddle was located had a considerable effect on the stability of the bed density at 9.36 cm/s < U < 10.70 cm/s. The higher the value of d, the better the stability, and the standard deviation of the bed density fluctuation r dropped to 0.0364 g/cm^3 at the ideal condition of d = 40 mm. The agitation speed also had a significant influence on the fluidization performance, and r was only 0.0286 g/cm^3 at an agitation speed of N = 75 r/min. The average bubble rise velocity decreased significantly with increasing agitation speed under the operating condition of 1.50 cm/s < U–U_(mf)< 3.50 cm/s. This shows that appropriate agitation contributes to a significant improvement in the fluidization quality in a fluidized bed, and enhances the separation performance of a fluidized bed. 展开更多

In this study, the open-source software MFIX-DEM simulations of a bubbling fluidized bed(BFB)are applied to assess nine drag models according to experimental and direct numerical simulation(DNS)results. The influence of superficial gas velocity on gas–solid flow is also examined. The results show that according to the distribution of time-averaged particle axial velocity in y direction, except for Wen–Yu and Tenneti–Garg–Subramaniam(TGS),other drag models are consistent with the experimental and DNS results. For the TGS drag model, the layer-by-layer movement of particles is observed, which indicates the particle velocity is not correctly predicted. The time domain and frequency domain analysis results of pressure drop of each drag model are similar. It is recommended to use the drag model derived from DNS or fine grid computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method(CFD-DEM)data first for CFD-DEM simulations. For the investigated BFB,the superficial gas velocity less than 0.9 m·s^(-1) should be adopted to obtain normal hydrodynamics. 展开更多

A computational study was carried out on bubble dynamic behaviors and bubble size distributions in a pressurized lab-scale gas-solid fluidized bed of Geldart A particles.High-resolution 3-D numerical simulations were performed using the two-fluid model based on the kinetic theory of granular flow.A finegrid, which is in the range of 3–4 particle diameters, was utilized in order to capture bubble structures explicitly without breaking down the continuum assumption for the solid phase.A novel bubble tracking scheme was developed in combination with a 3-D detection and tracking algorithm(MS3 DATA)and applied to detect the bubble statistics, such as bubble size, location in each time frame and relative position between two adjacent time frames, from numerical simulations. The spatial coordinates and corresponding void fraction data were sampled at 100 Hz for data analyzing. The bubble coalescence/break-up frequencies and the daughter bubble size distribution were evaluated by using the new bubble tracking algorithm. The results showed that the bubble size distributed non-uniformly over cross-sections in the bed.The equilibrium bubble diameter due to bubble break-up and coalescence dynamics can be obtained, and the bubble rise velocity follows Davidson’s correlation closely.Good agreements were obtained between the computed results and that predicted by using the bubble break-up model proposed in our previous work. The computational bubble tracking method showed the potential of analyzing bubble motions and the coalescence and break-up characteristics based on time series data sets of void fraction maps obtained numerically and experimentally. 展开更多

A three-dimensional numerical model verified by previous experimental data is developed to simulate the fluidized bed gasification of refuse derived fuel (RDF). The CaO dechlorination model obtained by the thermal gravity analysis (TGA) is coupled to investigate the process of CaO dechlorination. An Eulerian-Eulerian method is adopted to simulate the gas-solid flow and self-developed chemical reaction modules are used to simulate chemical reactions. Flow patterns, gasification results and dechlorination efficiency are obtained by numerical simulation. Meanwhile, simulations are performed to evaluate the effects of Ca/Cl molar ratio and temperature on dechlorination efficiency. The simulation results show that the presence of bubbles in the gasifier lowers the CaO dechlorination efficiency. Increasing the Ca/Cl molar ratio can enhance the dechlorination efficiency. However, with the temperature increasing, the dechlorination efficiency increases initially and then decreases. The optimal Ca/Cl molar ratio is in the range of 3. 0 to 3. 5 and the optimal temperature is 923K. 展开更多

Gas-solid fluidized beds have found extensive utilization in frontline manufacturing,in particular as low-velocity beds. The fluidization status, the bubbling or turbulent flow regime and the transition in between, determine the system performance in practical applications.Though the convoluted hydrodynamics are quantitively evaluated through numerous data-processing methodologies, none of them alone can reflect all the critical information to identify the transition from the bubbling to the turbulent regime.Accordingly, this study was to exploit a coupling data processing methodology,in the combination of standard deviation, power spectrum density, probability density function, wavelet transform, and wavelet multiresolution method,to jointly explain the micro-flow structure at the regime transition from bubbling to turbulent fluidization. The transient differential pressure fluctuation was measured for the evaluation in a fluidized bed(0.267 m i.d.×2.5 m height)with FCC catalysts(d_(p)=65μm,ρ_(p)=1780kg/m^(3))at different superficial gas velocities(0.02–1.4 m/s).The results show that the onset of turbulent fluidization starts earlier in the top section of the bed than in the bottom section. The wavelet decomposition displays that the fluctuation of differential pressure mainly concentrates on the sub-signals with an intermediate frequency band. These sub-signals could be synthesized into three types of scales(micro-scale,meso-scale,and macro-scale),representing the multi-scale hydrodynamics in the fluidized bed.The micro-scale signal has the characteristic information of bubbling fluidization, and the characteristic information of turbulent fluidization is mainly represented by the meso-scale signal. This work provides a systematic comprehension of fluidization status assessment and serves as an impetus for more coupling analysis in this sector. 展开更多

An experimental verification is reported on the early predicting index of agglomeration in bubbling fluidized bed. Coarse quartz sand, which has the same density but larger diameter than the bed material, was used to simulate the initial agglomerated particle. Wigner distribution was used to analyze the pressure fuctuation of the tested bed, and the average amplitude of local domain frequency (LDF) and local peak weighted average frequency (LPWA) under different operating conditions were measured and compared. The results showed that the LDF is sensitive to the agglomeration phenomena and had quick response to the incipient agglomeration in fluidized beds. It can be concluded from the results that these two parameters could be taken as the characteristic indexes to the agglomeration in fuidized beds. 展开更多

Bubble size distribution is the basic apparent performance and obvious characteristics in the air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB). The approaches of numerical simulation and experimental verification were combined to conduct the further research on the bubble generation and movement behavior. The results show that ADMFB could display favorable expanded characteristics after steady fluidization. With different particle size distributions of magnetite powder as medium solids, we selected an appropriate prediction model for the mean bubble diameter in ADMFB. The comparison results indicate that the mean bubble diameters along the bed heights are 35 mm < D b < 66 mm and 40 mm < D b < 69 mm with the magnetite powder of 0.3 mm+0.15mm and 0.15mm+0.074mm, respectively. The prediction model provides good agreements with the experimental and simulation data. Based on the optimal operating gas velocity distribution, the mixture of magnetite powder and <1mm fine coal as medium solids were utilized to carry out the separation experiment on 6-50mm raw coal. The results show that an optimal separation density d P of 1.73g/cm 3 with a probable error E of 0.07g/cm 3 and a recovery efficiency of 99.97% is achieved, which indicates good separation performance by applying ADMFB. 展开更多

Bed stability, and especially the bed density distribution, is affected by the behavior of bubbles in a gas solid fluidized bed. Bubble rise velocity in a pulsed gas-solid fluidized bed was studied using photographic and computational fluid dynamics methods. The variation in bubble rise velocity was investigated as a function of the periodic pulsed air flow. A predictive model of bubble rise velocity was derived: ub=ψ(Ut+Up-Umf)+kp(gdb)(1/2). The software of Origin was used to fit the empirical coefficients to give ψ = 0.4807 and kp = 0.1305. Experimental verification of the simulations shows that the regular change in bubble rise velocity is accurately described by the model. The correlation coefficient was 0.9905 for the simulations and 0.9706 for the experiments. 展开更多

An analysis approach considering gas-solids hydrodynamics, reaction kinetics and reacting species nonuniformity together in a dual-reactor system is presented for better understanding its mass and energy balance. It was achieved by a 3-dimensional comprehensive hydrodynamics and reaction model for the dual-reactor system, which was developed from the successfully verified 3-dimensional comprehensive combustion model for one circulating fluidized bed(CFB)system(Xu and Cheng,2019).The developed model and analysis approach was successfully used on a 1 MW circulating fluidized bed–bubbling fluidized bed(CFB-BFB)dual-reactor system. Results showed the sensible and chemical energy between two reactors as well as the energy distributions in each reactor were balanced and they agreed well with the experimental measurements. The analysis approach indicated energy balance had a close relationship with the mass transfer in the CFB-BFB dual-reactor system. It may be applied in a design and operation optimization for a dual-reactor system. 展开更多

Since 1978, Brazil has invested into bio-fuels alternatives, especially ethanol from sugar-cane processing and that has increased the bagasse production, which requires proper destination and a potential use of such biomass is the gasification process. In the present study, a conceptual design of a gasification system to convert sugar cane bagasse into syngas is presented, which considers air as gasification agent in a flexible configuration of bubbling fluidized bed reactor operating from atmospheric pressure up to 2 MPa, providing a net power output (referred at gas cold conditions) of 3 MWt and 66 MWt, respectively. In this last case, the gas may be used not just as a fuel for gas turbines and internal combustion engines for power generation but also to feed Fischer-Tropsch processes. The optimized conceptual design of the gasifier is described here and was achieved using the CSFMB (Comprehensive Simulator of Fluidized and Moving Bed Equipment). Simulations predicted the production of gas with high heating value as well stable operations at both conditions. The conceptual design would be followed by the detailed one and construction. Tests would be carried in the near future and would allow direct comparison between the calculated and experimental results. 展开更多

Pressurized fluidized beds have gained considerable interest in industrial applications due to their superior performance and efficiency compared to atmospheric fluidized beds. However, the mechanisms through which pressure influences the hydrodynamic behavior of different particle types remain insufficiently explored, hindering the scale-up, optimization, and broader adoption of this technology. To address this gap, CFD-DEM simulations were performed on a pseudo-2D pressurized bubbling fluidized bed using Geldart B and D particles. The effects of pressure, particle size, and initial bed height on key flow characteristics, including minimum fluidization velocity, particle dynamics (i.e., particle velocity and volume fraction distribution), and bubble behavior (i.e., bubble diameter, aspect ratio, density) were comprehensively examined. Results showed that the minimum fluidization velocity decreases with increasing pressure and increases with particle size, with greater sensitivity at lower pressures. Higher pressures lead to smaller bubble diameters, higher bubble aspect ratios, and denser bubble populations, resulting in concentrated particle distribution in the lower bed and more uniform radial dispersion. In contrast, larger particles create fewer, larger bubbles or slugs, and increase the overall bed height. These high-fidelity simulations offer valuable insights for optimizing the performance of pressurized fluidized beds in industrial processes. 展开更多

In gas fluidization processes involving different types of particles, the mixing or segregation behavior of the solid mixture is crucial to the overall outcome of the process. This study develops a model to predict the segregation directions of binary mixtures of Geldart B particles with density and size differences in bubbling fluidized beds. The proposed model was established by combining the particle segregation model,a previous particle segregation model, with a derived bed voidage equation of the bubbling fluidization based on the two-phase theory. The model was then analyzed with different function graphs of the model equations under various conditions. The results indicated that an increase in gas velocity or volume fraction of larger particles would strengthen size segregation, causing the larger and less dense components to descend. To validate the model,42 sets of data collected from 6 independent literature sources were compared with the predictions of the model. When the gas velocities were below 3.2 times the minimum gas velocity, the predictions were consistent with experimental results. This study has shed new light on the mechanisms of particle segregation in binary fluidized systems and provides a theoretical foundation for designing and manipulating gas-solid fluidized reactors. 展开更多

Few studies have investigated scale-up of the residence-time distribution (RTD) of particles in bubbling fluidized beds (BFBs) with continuous particle flow. Two approaches were investigated in this study: first, using well-known scaling laws that require changes in particle properties and gas velocity; second, using a simple approach keeping the same particles and gas velocity for different beds. Our theoretical analysis indicates it is possible to obtain similar RTDs in different BFBs with scaling laws if the plug-flow residence time (tpiug) is changed as m^0.5, where m is the scaling ratio of the bed; however, neither approach can ensure similar RTDs if tplug is kept invariant. To investigate RTD variations using two approaches without changing tplug, we performed experiments in three BFBs. The derivatives dE(θ)/dθ (where E(θ) is the dimensionless RTD density function and θ is the dimensionless time) in the early stage of the RTDs always varied with m 1, which was attributed to the fact that the particle movement in the early stage were mainly subject to dispersion. Using the simple approach, we obtained similar RTDs by separately treating the RTDs in the early and post-stages. This approach guarantees RTD similarity and provides basic rules for designing BFBs. 展开更多

Pressure fluctuations in four bubbling fluidized beds having different bed sizes (three square cross-sections of 5, 10, and 15 cm in side length, and one rectangular cross-section of 2 × 10 cm2) were measured at four axial positions (P1, P2, P3, and P4). Several characteristic indicators of the flow specifically of the pressure were calculated. In terms of these characteristic indicators, the effect of bed size on flow behavior was investigated. The results show that in the fully fluidized state, the pressure drop is slightly higher in smaller beds, but the pressure drops in the 10- and 15-cm beds are close. The 15-cm bed has the lowest pressure-fluctuation amplitude. The amplitudes at P1 and P2 in the lower part of the bed are very close for bed sizes below 10 cm, but the amplitude at P3 near the bed surface increases with decreasing bed size. No general trend was observed regarding the effect of bed size on skewness and kurtosis of the pressure for all four axial heights. For the average, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis of the pressure at P4, the values are close for the two small beds (2 × 10 and 5 × 5 cm2) and the two large beds (10 × 10 and 15 × 15 cm2), and hence the effect of bed size separates the beds into two groups. In the fully fluidized state, for P1, P2, and P3, the Kolmogorov entropy and the dominant frequency both increase with increasing bed size, but in the pseudo-2D bed both are between the values for the 5- and 10-cm beds. 展开更多

The reasonable reactor design is of great importance for increasing the C_(2)yield(C2H4 and C2H6)of the oxidative coupling of methane(OCM),and the OCM reactor should remove the heat released in reactions quickly and efficiently and minimize the consecutive reaction of ethylene to carbon oxides. The fluidized bed reactor is characterized by excellent heat transfer, superior mass transport, and large handling capacity, while fewer studies focused on large-scale fluidized bed reactors for the OCM reaction. Therefore, large cold-model experiments and computational fluid dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate hydrodynamics and the OCM reaction performance in a large-scale bubbling fluidized bed(BFB)and a large-scale riser. In the BFB reactor, consecutive reactions of ethylene are acute because of the strong gas back-mixing,high solids holdup, and non-uniform solids distribution. While the consecutive reactions of ethylene are negligible due to the plug flow structure and low solids holdup in the riser reactor.Further, both reactors can achieve isothermal operation for the OCM process. The C_(2)selectivity of 45.4%and C_(2)yield of 21.1%are obtained in the riser reactor, increasing by 20.3%and 5.8%individually than that in the BFB reactor. This study provides useful information and reference to the OCM reactor designandcommercialization. 展开更多
