In this work, a 3 D finite element model was established to predict tensile performance and failure modes of single-lap, single-bolt 2 D C/SiC composite, and superalloy joint, which considers the progressive damage behavior of 2 D woven C/SiC composites. On the basis of the developed progressive damage model, a parametric study was carried out to illustrate the effects of bolt preload and bolt-hole clearance on mechanical behaviors of the hybrid bolted joint. It was found that the increase in the value of bolt preload made the failure load grow first and then drop, and the optimum value of bolt preload 5.00 kN generated 56.47% rise in the initial failure load and 22.83% rise in the final failure load for the bolted joint in comparison with zero preload case. As the clearance increased from 0 to 2.00%, the initial and final failure loads respectively declined by 45.88% and 24.02% for 2.00% bolt-hole clearance relative to the neat-fit case. The loss in failure loads can be reduced to compressive stress concentration around the fastening hole-edge area, leading to the appearance of earlier damages by the introduction of increasing bolt hole clearance.展开更多

A comprehensive numerical study of three-dimensional(3D) stress variations is prohibitively expensive for a large-scale structure where hundreds of bolts can be present. In this work, the hybrid composite-to-metal bolted connections used in the upper stage of European Ariane 5ME rocket are analyzed using the global-local finite element(FE) approach which involves an approximate analysis of the whole structure followed by a detailed analysis of a significantly smaller region of interest. We calculate the Tsai-Wu failure index and the margin of safety using the stresses obtained from ABAQUS. We find that the composite part of a hybrid bolted connection is prone to failure compared to the metal part. We determine the bolt preload based on the clamp-up load calculated using a maximum preload to make the composite part safe. We conclude that the unsuitable bolt preload may cause the failure of the composite part due to the high stress concentration in the vicinity of the bolt. The global-local analysis provides an efficient computational tool for enhancing 3D stress analysis in the highly loaded region.展开更多

Quasi-static tests of the hybrid joints with different fit conditions are implemented, and a three dimensional finite element progressive failure analysis model is proposed to predict the influences of the bolt-hole fit conditions and fastener's pre- loads on the mechanical behaviors of the joints. Based on the experimental validated simulation method, a multi-factor, mixed levels orthogonal design table and the analysis of variance method are used to arrange the simulation conditions and to further study the interactive effects of preloads and fit conditions. Through the analysis of the results, for the researched double bolt, single-lap composite-titanium joints, it is found that: the effects of both the interference fit and the preloads change from positive into negative mode with the increase of the interference fit values or preload values; appropriate bolt-hole fit conditions and preloads can improve the bolt-hole contact conditions of the loaded joints, and then retard the fiber failures around the fastener holes, and increase the load carrying capacity of the joints eventually; the interactive effect of the bolt-hole interference fit conditions and preloads cannot be ignored and the parameters need to be considered together and synthetically as the joints are being optimized.展开更多

The design principles of roadway support in soft coal seam were put forward: high strength anchor cable support, high preload support and high stiffness support. The bearing capacity of surrounding rock was strengthened by anchor cable support, and the deformation and failure of surrounding rock were effectively controlled. Through the numerical simulation method, the deformation and plastic failure range of roadwaysunder different support schemes are compared and analyzed. The support scheme of centralized transportation roadway is studied and determined, and the field test is carried out, which effectively controls the deformation of surrounding rock of roadway in weak coal seam.展开更多
