This study aimed to highlight the plant species used as food packaging in southern Benin. A survey questionnaire was administered in local markets, and informed consent was obtained from native guides. Data were processed using Google Forms, and a phytochemical screening was conducted on the sampled species. A total of 311 individuals, including elders, vendors, and consumers, participated in the survey. The most commonly used plant species identified were Tectona grandis, Thalia geniculata, Musa sapientum, Gmelina arborea, Manihot esculenta, and Terminalia catappa. Several reasons, primarily cultural, explain the preference for these species. Notably, Tectona grandis and Musa sapientum demonstrated superior morphological, physical, and organoleptic qualities, measuring 79 cm by 53.5 cm and over 2 m by 50 cm, respectively. They accounted for 33.33% and 32.35% of usage. Additionally, fermented corn paste, making up over 53% of offerings, was the most popular food item. The mechanical properties of these leaves, such as flexibility, toughness, and relative impermeability, along with identified phytochemicals like terpenes, alkaloids, gallic acid, flavonoids, and coumarins, enhance food preservation and limit microbial activity. Promoting the use of these natural packaging materials over plastic alternatives could significantly reduce environmental pollution and mitigate the risks associated with toxic microorganisms in food, contributing to both ecological health and food safety.展开更多

However, little is known about the bioactive substances of marine yeasts. In recent years, it has been found that marine yeasts have wide applications in mariculture and other fields. Therefore, marine yeasts, the bioactive substances from them and the applications of marine yeasts themselves and the bioactive substances they produced are reviewed in this paper.展开更多

文摘Syzygium cumini Linn.,commonly known as Jamun,is a member of the Myrtaceae family and is also referred to by synonyms such as Eugenia djouant Perr.,Eugenia cumini,Eugenia jambolana Lam.,Syzygium jambolana Lam.,and Myrtus cumini Linn. This review provides an overview of its medicinal value, including taxonomical classification, geographic distribution, cultivation techniques, pharmacognostical aspects, phytochemical constituents, traditional uses, and pharmacological applications. In India,‘Ram Jamun’or‘Raja Jamun’is cultivated in the north, while the‘Paras’variety is grown in central regions.Various components of S.cumini fruits are utilized to enhance the nutritional quality of wines, jellies, jams, and fermented products.Rich in essential nutrients like vitamins, carbohydrates, minerals, antioxidants, and anthocyanins,S.cumini also contains bioactive phytoconstituents such as gallic acid, tannins, and polyphenols, which contribute to its pharmacological properties.Traditionally, black plums have been used as carminatives, diuretics, and remedies for stomach ailments, spleen enlargement, diarrhea, and urinary retention.Additionally,S.cumini has been historically administered to women post-abortion and is recognized for its role in managing diabetes and dysentery.Polyphenolic compounds in Jamun exhibit potential therapeutic benefits against diabetes, arthritis, cancer, asthma, and cardiovascular diseases.Given its promising ethnopharmacological profile, extensive research has been conducted on various plant parts, highlighting their antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, antidiabetic, and anticancer properties. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Syzygium cumini’s traditional and therapeutic significance, serving as a valuable resource for future research.

文摘Vegetal leaves play a significant role in the daily lives of populations in developing countries. Promoting the use of these natural packaging materials over plastic alternatives could significantly reduce environmental pollution and mitigate the risks associated with toxic microorganisms in food, contributing to both ecological health and food safety.

文摘The terrestrial yeasts have been receiving great attention in science and industry for over one hundred years because they can produce many kinds of bioactive substances. However, little is known about the bioactive substances of marine yeasts. In recent years, it has been found that marine yeasts have wide applications in mariculture and other fields. Therefore, marine yeasts, the bioactive substances from them and the applications of marine yeasts themselves and the bioactive substances they produced are reviewed in this paper.
