In addition to causing discomfort, female mosquitoes introduce disease-carrying viruses and bacteria into the bloodstream of their victims. There are numerous publications describing the uses of sugary mosquito baits with promising results. Without temperature control measures however, these methods are mainly useful for only nectar-feeding insects, including male mosquitoes, because the warmth of the blood is a condition for the females to locate their meals. The efforts required to keep the baits fresh against the natural spoiling process make them less attractive or impractical to implement. These experiments address these issues by using warm baits of water, sugar, boric acid, and antibiotics. Overnight, the general areas became clear of blood-sucking female mosquitoes while in numbers, the harmless males concentrated into the immediate vicinities. Control vs. experiment protocol established no other logical explanation for this phenomenon other than that females were attracted and killed by the bait. As expected, there was no female mosquito’s activity in these areas. There weren’t many left to do the work. 展开更多

The recombined vector was transformed into yeast competent ceils AH109 and carried out self-activated detection and toxicity detection in the au.xotrephic medium. [ Result] Digestion and sequencing results showed that bait vector pGBKT7-Lescpth5 was suecessfully constructed with correct reading frame. Self-activated activity and toxicity detection results showed that bait vector had no self- activated activity on yeast strain AH109, which also had no toxicity on yeast. [Condusion] Bait vector successfully constructed could be used in yeast two-hybrid system, which laid the foundation for screening of cDNA library in the next step. 展开更多

Influence of Trap Construction on Mosquito Capture

During 2009 and 2010, 23 night-time mosquito captures were made at Kanci obora in south-eastern Moravia, Czech Republic. It was used in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) miniature light traps with CO2 (dry ice) and baited lard-can traps in which sentinel animals were replaced with a container filled with CO2 (dry ice). In the observed period, a total of 31,882 female mosquitoes were captured by CDC miniature light traps with CO2. Lard-can traps baited with CO2 captured 995 females under the same conditions, which is just 3.12% of the quantity from the CDC traps. At the same time, there were significant differences in the proportional captures of various species. Compared to CDC miniature light traps, baited lard-can traps much more often captured Aedes cinereus (16.58% of total versus 1.93% in CDC traps), Culex modestus (15.48% versus 4.62%), and Ae. rossicus (6.13% versus 2.67%). On the other hand, capture of female Ae. vexans was proportionally much lower (15.38% versus 36.41%). Capture of Cx. pipiens was more or less the same 14.77% (miniature light traps) and 15.76% (baited lard-can traps). The occurrence of the calamity species Ae. sticticus was proportionally very high in both trap types (30.05% in lard-can traps baited with CO2, 33.58% in CDC miniature light traps). The findings prove that a trap's design itself significantly affects not only the overall capture of mosquitoes but also the proportional representation of individual species. 展开更多

With the rapid development of aquaculture in lakes and reservoirs, its negative effects on water quality and aquatic organisms are clearly emerging. Toward a better understanding of these effects, chemical and biological monitoring was conducted in the Fangbian Reservoir to study the relationship between aquaculture and eutrophication. As a domestic water supply source, this reservoir has reached the mesotrophic level. The concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in the Fangbian Reservoir have frequently exceeded the prescriptive level according to the Environmental Quality Standardgfor SurJace Water (GB3838-2002). Pond and fence aquaculture feeding is the main cause of high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus, accounting for nearly half of the total pollution, and causing the reservoir environmental capacity to be exceeded. The amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus that went directly to the reservoir through the residual bait and fish droppings in fence aquaculture were 42 768 kg per year and 10 856 kg per year respectively, from 2007 to 2009. About 2 913 kg of nitrogen and 450 kg of phosphorus were imported to the reservoir through the exchange of water from the culturing ponds at the same time. Therefore, controlling the aquaculture scale and promoting eco-aquaculture are key measures for lessening the eutrophication degree and improving the water quality. 展开更多

The efficiency of this bait was then compared to octenol baited traps.Results: The yeast/sugar(5g: 280g) in 300 m L water generated the highest volume of CO_2. The CO_2 baited traps caught significantly more mosquitoes than octenol baited traps.Conclusions: Yeast-produced CO_2 can effectively replace octenol baits in BG traps.This will significantly reduce costs and allow sustainable mass-application of the CO_2 baited traps in large scale surveillance programs. 展开更多

Protein baitsprays were produced from many different sources for the controlling fruit flies in the integrated pest management program around the world.Here,fruit fly baits were formulated based on cost-effective bait mixtures such as local jaggery,brewers spent grain(BSG),apple cider vinegar,wheat bran powder and local red wine with the fresh enzyme from papaya and pineapple.Fruit fly Baits were prepared by mixing the small amount of local detergent as insecticide.Our results indicated that the best efficient fruit fly bait for area wide integrated pest management(AW-IPM)is the BSG-based bait whereas the second efficient bait is local red wine-based bait.The highest fruit fly per trap per day(FTD)value by BSG-based bait traps was discovered.The highest female captured percentage is BSG-based bait with papaya solution.The field analysis of one week and one month old protein-based bait showed that FTD values decreased slightly while only one month old wheat bran-based bait dropped to the base.The BSG-based baits analysis is effective not only female fruit flies but also cockroaches male in Myanmar’s tropical region.Thus our results reveal that the efficient protein-based bait is the fresh BSG-based bait with papaya solution. 展开更多

Behavioural Response of Anacanthotermes ochraceus towards Some Baits and Volatile Oils

Six types of termites' baits (cartoon, rough tissues, soft toilet tissues, acacia wood, saw dust of building wood and sackcloth) were elicited variable degree of attraction toward Anacanthotermes ochaceus, where the best one was cardboard, followed by soft and rough toilet tissue at mono-choice and multiple-choice tests. Chemical analysis showed that there were variations in the chemical constituents (lignin, cellulose, N, H and C) of the six baits studied. On the other hand, olfactory reactions of harvester termites toward eight volatile oils (four natural medical plants and four commercial terpines) were repellent, but the most repellent one was cineol and the least one was clove oil. The most tested oils were caused inhibition in feeding, except cedar wood. The most toxic oils were cineol followed by thymol. 展开更多

With Oreochromis niloticus as the object of study,glucose was added as a carbon source to promote the formation of the biological flocs for replacing part of the feed,and three gradients were set up,namely Group A(all feed),Group B(replacement of 10%feed)and Group C(replacement of 20%feed),so as to explore the effects of photosynthetic bacteria-enhanced biological flocs on tilapia growth and water environment conditions.Meanwhile,the Biolog-ECO technology was applied to study the changes of microbial carbon metabolism diversity in aquaculture water.The results showed that the utilization of microbial carbon sources under different feed replacement gradients increased with the extension of the culture time.The overall performance was in order of 10%replacement>all feed>20%feed replacement.A suitable replacement rate could not only enhance the overall utilization of carbon sources by water microorganisms,but also save culture costs.The principal component analysis showed that the carbon source metabolism of the water microbial communities under different feed replacement gradients was significantly different.Specifically,polysaccharides,esters and amino acids were the preferred carbon sources of water microbes,while the utilization of amines and acids was low. 展开更多

Is the wild animal conservation result in Taiwan good enough to provide the blood resources for the blood sucking insect and cause the insect behavior changed? Based on the bimonthly investigation of Culicoides sp. in Wuling area, Sheipar National Park, by both human bait method and light trap method, we found that there were totally 13,191 individuals trapped by light trap and collected but no one single Culicoides sp. trapped by human bait during the study period of Wuling Long Term Ecological Research (WLTER) in 2012. Two of the three sites were recorded and reported as the midge attacked the ranger and tourists of Sheipa National Park in 2010 and 2011 respectively. Along with the study of WLTER some wild animals encounter more often than before, especially the bird population in the riparian ecosystem of the mountain river Chi Chia Wan Stream. On the other end, Culicoides sp. preferred to the blood of birds and amphibians as well as mammals according to the article review. So, the effectiveness of blood resource from wild animals may cause the behavior of blood sucking insect like as Culicoides sp. shifted to or returned back to the original and the favorite blood resource. 展开更多

Socio-Economic Impact of Fruit Flies Control in Mango Production in Ghana, Evidence from “Manya Krobo”

Mango in Ghana is targeted as the next non-traditional export crop that is expected to fetch the highest foreign exchange for the country than cocoa. However, production and export constraints caused by fruit fly Bactrocera invadens has placed serious limitation on its marketing to the extent of imposing bans on imports from Ghana. Notwithstanding efforts rolled out to control the flies, they are still prevalent in the system. This paper presents the cost benefit assessments of using "Biotechnology and Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute (BNARI) protein bait" to control fruit fly Bactrocera invadens relative to other control measures in the Eastern region of South Ghana. Scientists from the BNARI of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission developed a research programme against this foe. Cost benefit assessment revealed that chemical control reduce losses from 60% to 40% at the beginning of the growing season and can reach up to 60% for late maturing varieties at a cost of US$915.2 per acre per year. However, with the BNARI trap, losses are reduced from 60% to 5% at the beginning of the growing season and can reach up to 10% for later maturing varieties at a cost of US$688 per acre per year. Using BNARI protein baits to control fruit fly also provide growers with benefits such as improved quality and shelf life for fruit because it is not subject to chemical treatments. The casual loop diagram (CLD) revealed that fly control with BNARI trap is friendly to beneficial insects during pollination and has no harmful impact on health compared to the traditional approaches. 展开更多

Ant species diversity in ciliary forest and gallery forest areas in central Brazil

Ants make up an important group of insects of the Cerrado in terms of biomass, number of individuals, and ecological impact. The main goals of this study were to quantify the species richness and species diversity of the family Formicidae in two riparian Cerrado physiognomies: Ciliary Forest and Gallery Forest, and to evaluate the effectiveness of two collection techniques for these organisms. The study was conducted during the dry season, comprising the months of May to October 2012, in the municipality of Quirinópolis, Goiás State, Brazil. Samples were made using two capture techniques: sardine baits and pitfall traps. Manual collection was employed to extend the range of faunistic composition of the ants. We collected 24 species of ants in the Gallery Forest and 23 in the Ciliary Forest. The genus Megalomyrmex was the most representative, being present in 49.46% of the samples, and secondly the genus Pheidole, with 15.36% of the total individuals captured. From a total of 10,917 individuals, 9140 were captured using the bait technique, 1738 with traps, and 39 individuals through manual collection. Similar results were found in the Cerrado of Paineiras, with 45 ant species distributed in 16 genera belonging to 5 subfamilies. 展开更多

Introduction:This study explores the midgut microbiota of mosquitoes in Haikou and Sanya cities,regions critical for understanding vector-borne disease dynamics in Hainan Province,China.It provides baseline data on microbial composition and examines their potential role in influencing mosquito biology and vector competence,while highlighting the need for further research into their association with vectorborne viral infections.Methods:Adult mosquitoes were collected using light traps and human bait methods.Species identification was conducted through morphological examination and DNA barcoding using the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene(cox1).The V3–V4 hypervariable regions of the microbial 16S ribosomal RNA(rRNA)gene were sequenced using high-throughput methods to investigate the midgut microbiota.Statistical analyses,including Alpha and Beta diversity assessments of the sequencing results,were performed using SPSS 21.0 and R version 3.11.Results:The predominant mosquito species identified were Aedes albopictus,Armigeres subalbatus,and Culex pipiens.Microbiota analysis of 281 midguts revealed that Proteobacteria dominated(85.28%),with significant fractions being Alphaproteobacteria(52.14%),Gammaproteobacteria(29.90%),and Betaproteobacteria(3.22%).Other notable phyla included Firmicutes(6.24%),Actinobacteria(3.81%),and lesser quantities of Thermi,Cyanobacteria,and Bacteroidetes.Significant geographic variation in bacterial communities was observed between Haikou and Sanya(P<0.05),with unique taxa like Thermi and Cyanobacteria identified only in Haikou and Chlamydiae found solely in Sanya.The analysis revealed 204 overlapping species,with 473 unique to Haikou and 64 to Sanya.Conclusions:This study revealed significant geographic differences in the midgut microbiota of mosquitoes from Haikou and Sanya,providing foundational data for understanding their potential impact on mosquito biology and disease transmission.While the direct relationship between these microbial variations and vector-borne disease dynamics requires further investigation,these findings underscore the importance of mosquito microbiota research as part of broader strategies to mitigate vector-borne disease risks. 展开更多

This study evaluated the performance of chocolate squid(Todarodes pacificus)bait as a lower-cost alternative to traditional squid bait in a snow crab(Chionoecetes opilio)fishery in Eastern Canada.The results showed that pots with chocolate squid bait had significantly lower catch rates compared to pots with traditional squid bait.The chocolate squid bait significantly reduced the number of crabs caught per pot by 13.99%and the weight of crabs caught per pot by 2.88 kg.Although the chocolate squid bait is cheaper,the decrease in catch rates could require increased effort to reach individual quotas,which could lead to longer or more frequent fishing trips and more traps being fished,increasing fuel consumption and habitat disruption,resulting in negative environmental impacts.Finding alternative lower-cost baits that maintain catch rates remains a key priority for reducing operational costs and minimizing environmental impacts in the snow crab fishery. 展开更多

Compound biological bait can replace commercial bait to ensure fish growth.The compound biogenic bait can effectively improve the water and soil environment.The key microbiome induced by compound biogenic bait plays an important role.Traditional commercial aquatic fish bait(CA)is not conducive to the scientific breeding of rice and fish in cocropping systems,and excessive feeding easily causes environmental pollution in rice fields.In this study,an environment-friendly compound biogenic bait(CB)mixed with plant-derived(PB)and animal-derived(AB)baits was proposed.The rice–crucian carp cocropping system was used as the research object,and the soil microorganisms and fish gut microorganisms were sequenced with high throughput,respectively,to verify the effect of CB application and the microbial mechanism underlying its functional effect.The results showed that the AB and PB components in CB maintain the growth of fish by improving the metabolism-related functions of fish gut microbiome and reducing the abundance of intestinal pathogenic bacteria,including Actinomadura.In particular,the PB components induced soil microbiome,such as Pseudonocardia,that participate in soil nutrient cycling and increase dissolved oxygen in water,which is key for improving rice quality and yield.This is the first study to focus on how different bait components drive key microbial communities to regulate animal–plant–environment relationships in the integrated planting and breeding patterns of paddy fields. 展开更多

Marine reserves are an important management tool for conserving local biodiversity and protecting fragile ecosystems such as seagrass that provide significant ecological functions and services to people and the marine environment.With humans placing ever-growing pressure on seagrass habitats,marine reserves also provide an important reference from which changes to seagrass and their ecological assemblages may be assessed.After eight years of protection of seagrass beds(Posidonia australis)in no-take marine reserves(Sanctuary Zones)within the Jervis Bay Marine Park(New South Wales,Australia;zoned in 2002),we aimed to assess what changes may have occurred and assess continuing change through time in fish assemblages within these seagrass meadows.Using baited remote underwater videos(BRUVs),we sampled seagrass fish assemblages at three locations in no-take zones and five locations in fished zones three times from 2010 to 2013.Overall,we observed a total of 2615 individuals from 40 fish species drawn from 24 families.We detected no differences in total fish abundance,diversity,or assemblage composition between management zones,although we observed a significant increase in Haletta semifasciata,a locally targeted fish species,in no-take marine reserves compared with fished areas.Fish assemblages in seagrass varied greatly amongst times and locations.Several species varied in relative abundance greatly over months and years,whilst others had consistently greater relative abundances at specific locations.We discuss the potential utility of marine reserves covering seagrass habitats and the value of baseline data from which future changes to seagrass fish populations may be measured. 展开更多
