An expeditious method for ascertaining species between black bear (Selenarctos thibetanus G. cuiver) and brown bear (Ursus arctos Linnaeus) was developed using tooth measurements from previously identified specimens. The measurement and analysis on 18 tooth measurement indexes (i.e. T1. Length of Pm1-Pm4, T2. L. of M1-M3, T3. M1L., T4. M1 width, T5. M2L., T6. M2W., T7.M3L., T8. M3W., T9. L. of C1 alveolus, T10. W. of C1 alveolus, T11. L. of C1-M2, T12. L. of Pm4 M2,T13.M1L., T14. M1W., T15. M2L., T16. M2W., T17.L. of C1 alveolus, T18. W. of C1 alveolus) of 59 skulls (black bears 25, brown bears 34) indicates that there are significant or the most significant difference between two species in every indexes, however T1, T9, T10, T17 and T18 are not suitable for species discriminator because of their high percent of overlap. The efficient species discriminators and standards (mm) are as follows T2(63.0), T3(22.0), T4(10.2), T5(23.8), T6(13.6), T7(18.0), T8(13.5), T11(110.0),T12(66.0), T13(20. 1), T14(15.8), T15(33.0) and T16(17.3). Those who are less than or equal to standard are classified to black bear, the others are brown bear. The method is very convenient and useful with high reliability. Their lowest accuracy percent are 95.0%, most of them over 97%. Different indexes will be chosen refer to the degree of specimen destroyed. 展开更多

Populations of the European brown bear (Ursus arctos L.) differ substantially in size, degree of geographic isolation and level of genetic diversity. Present patterns result from phylogeographic processes and profound human intervention. We assessed the genetic variability of a subpopulation of brown bears near the periphery of their range in the Western Carpathian Mountains and compared their genetic properties with those of bears in the core of the same population and elsewhere. Samples were collected non-invasively in 2007-2008 and2010 in Strázovské Vrchy Protected Landscape Area (PLA) in Slovakia (included in the NATURA 2000 networking programme). Seven polymorphic microsatellite loci (UaMU26, UaMU64, G10B, G1D, G10L, UaMU50 and UaMU51) were amplified using a nested PCR in order to assess the following parameters: variability, allelic combinations, heterozygosity, number of alleles and inbreeding coefficient. Sufficient brown bear DNA for analysis was obtained from 57 out of 140 samples (41%), among which 45 different genotypes were identified. Loci had a mean of 2.71 ± 0.76 alleles. Average observed heterozygosity was 0.59. The inbreeding coefficient was negative for all but one of the analysed loci (2007-2008). In the year 2010 was negative three of seven loci. These results imply that gene flow with other parts of the population has been maintained in the reduced level and the isolation level of bears in the study area was not so low. Nevertheless, the genetic variability of bears in Strázovské Vrchy PLA was lower than that reported from other localities in the Carpathian Mountains. The results are discussed in the context of behavioural ecology and conservation genetics. 展开更多

To date, various micro/nanofabrication techniques have been developed during the global nanotechnology race, such as electron-beam lithography[1],photolithography[2],nanoimprint lithography[3],and 3D nanoprinting[4,5].Benefiting from these functional techniques,micro/nanoscale patterns can be easily generated onto a broad range of materials, including metals, semiconductors, ceramics, and polymers. However,a bold and even visionary question can be raised,is it possible to make patterns on living organisms rather than inanimate objects?Despite the emergence of numerous electronic devices for biological applications, directly processing biological samples remains a challenge due to the poor biocompatibility of many micro/nanofabrication methods[6].Researchers have attempted to prepare and transfer micro/nanopatterns onto cell surfaces[7],the structural integrity of these modifications can be compromised by the growth and development of cells during culture. Moreover, intact animal skin presents greater challenges for integration with metal patterns compared to cell surfaces. 展开更多

Manual inspection of onba earing casting defects is not realistic and unreliable, particularly in the case of some micro-level anomalies which lead to major defects on a large scale. To address these challenges,we propose BearFusionNet,an attention-based deep learning architecture with multi-stream,which merges both DenseNet201 and MobileNetV2 for feature extraction with a classification head inspired by VGG19.This hybrid design, figuratively beaming from one layer to another, extracts the enormity of representations on different scales, backed by a prepreprocessing pipeline that brings defect saliency to the fore through contrast adjustment, denoising, and edge detection. The use of multi-head self-attention enhances feature fusion, enabling the model to capture both large and small spatial features.BearFusionNet achieves an accuracy of 99.66%and Cohen’s kappa score of 0.9929 in Kaggle’s Real-life Industrial Casting Defects dataset. Both McNemar’s and Wilcoxon signed-rank statistical tests,as well as fivefold cross-validation,are employed to assess the robustness of our proposed model. To interpret the model,we adopt Grad-Cam visualizations, which are the state of the art standard.Furthermore,we deploy BearFusionNet as a webbased system for near real-time inference(5-6 s per prediction),which enables the quickest yet accurate detection with visual explanations.Overall,BearFusionNet is an interpretable, accurate, and deployable solution that can automatically detect casting defects, leading to significant advances in the innovative industrial environment. 展开更多

Identifying geohazards such as landslides and methane leakage is crucial during gas extraction from natural gas hydrate(NGH)reservoirs, and understanding reservoir settlement behavior is central to this assessment.Horizontal wells can enlarge the pressure relief zone within the formation, improving single-well productivity, and are therefore considered a promising approach for NGH development. This study examines the settlement response of hydrate-bearing sediments during depressurization using horizontal wells.A fully coupled thermal, hydraulic, mechanical, and chemical(THMC)model with representative reservoir properties(Shenhu region in the South China Sea)is presented accordingly. The simulations show that lower production pressures, while increasing gas output, also intensify formation settlement. The maximum difference in settlement between the lowest and highest production pressures reaches 0.016 m,contributing to more pronounced differential subsidence.Optimal well placement, specifically targeting a low-saturation hydrate zone containing free gas and situated adjacent to a high-saturation hydrate layer, markedly improves both gas production rate and cumulative yield, while reducing overall settlement and limiting changes in effective stress. 展开更多

Isolation technology can reduce the type of structural damage that earthquakes cause.A new type of composite sliding-rolling friction composite seismic isolation bearing(SRF)with composite sliding friction and rolling friction is proposed.SRF is capable of realizing a parallel arrangement of sliding friction and rolling friction, and the coefficient of dynamic friction shows variability. The proposed static tests on composite bearings were conducted to investigate the effects of the number of shims, loading speed and vertical pressure on the dynamic friction factor.Test results show that the coefficient of dynamic friction first generally decreases and then increases with an increase in sliding speed, prior to again decreasing with an increase in vertical pressure. The dynamic friction factor increases and then decreases with an increase in the number of shims for a four-roll ball.It decreases and then increases with an increase in the number of shims for a five-roll ball.Based on finite element analysis, modeling and analyzing the effects of the coefficient of friction, the number of balls and the number of shims on the hysteresis performance of the support and derive its skeleton curve. The SRF hysteretic performance, dynamic friction factor and the number of rolling balls and shims show significant correlation. 展开更多

Floating ring bearings are widely used in high-speed turbomachinery such as turbochargers and turbogenerators.Research-ers have recently explored various surface texturing strategies on the inner surface of floating rings to enhance bearing performance. In this study, the herring patterns are textured on the inner surface of the floating ring. This pattern is inspired by the secondary flight feathers of the Indian pigeon, which aid the bird in reducing viscous drag during flight. The result-ing Herringbone Textured Floating Ring Bearing(HTFRB)is investigated for its potential application in locomotive turbo-chargers.The HTFRB is numerically modeled using the Reynolds equation to evaluate the bearing's pressure distribution and static characteristics, including load-carrying capacity, power loss, and side leakage.Dynamic characteristics are determined by solving the zeroth-and first-order perturbed Reynolds equation.A Sobol sensitivity analysis is conducted to quantify the influence of groove parameters-helix angle, groove depth, groove width ratio, and number of grooves-on bearing performance metrics. An artificial intelligence-based optimization framework, integrating artificial neural networks and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems,is developed to maximize load carrying capacity while minimiz-ing power loss, side leakage, and friction coefficient. The optimized texture parameters obtained from this framework are employed to validate the ANN model and evaluate the static and dynamic characteristics of the HTFRB.The dynamic coefficients of the HTFRB are further employed to evaluate the stability and robustness of the turbocharger rotor-HTFRB system. This study underscores the potential of combining bio-inspired texture design with numerical modeling and AI-based optimization to develop high-performance HTFRB. 展开更多

Root-inspired anchorage systems in the field of bio-inspired geotechnics are renowned for enhancing the pullout capacity of traditional geotechnical anchorage systems by simulating the morphology and architecture of plant root systems. However, limited studies have explored their practical applications, particularly in improving slope stability. To fill this gap, this study investigates the reinforcement effect of root-inspired anchors on slope stabilization using transparent soil modeling and 3D-printed anchors, and examines the impact of anchor branching patterns(i.e.branching numbers, branching angle, and branching nodes)on slope bearing capacity, shear band evolution, and temporal and spatial variation of slope deformation. The results show that peak slope bearing capacity increases with branching numbers and branching angles, correlating with the envelope area of the curved shear band.Upper anchors result in step-like deflections in the shear band near the trailing edge, while lower anchors convert the upward concave shear band into an upward convex one, thus increasing the slope bearing capacity.Slope deformation is minimized with intermediate branching parameters, such as a branching number of 4 and a branching angle of 45°.The anchor reinforcement mechanisms,i.e.anchor rod shear resistance, interface friction, anchor pullout capacity, and plate tightening effects, are comprehensively discussed, and the installation effects resulting from compromise slope modeling are identified as the contributors. These findings shed light on the failure process of root-inspired anchors reinforced slopes and provide a preliminary reference for potential applications, especially for the tradeoff between anchor branching, slope deformation, and slope stability. 展开更多

Urban tunnels are often built in multiples, yet the influence of surface structures on their support demands is frequently overlooked, highlighting the need for refined design under realistic loading. This study addresses this gap by examining the response of a uniformly loaded strip footing above twin horseshoe tunnels with structural linings.A non-dimensional Footing Stability Improvement Factor(I_(f)),defined as the ratio of ultimate bearing capacity with and without lining to that of a footing on intact rock—is evaluated using adaptive finite element limit analysis. The effects of normalized vertical depth of tunnel, normalised horizontal spacing of tunnel, and lining-thickness factor are examined, providing key insights into foundation-tunnel interaction and support optimization. This study finds that, for unlined twin tunnels,footing-tunnel interaction becomes negligible when embedment exceeds four times of footing widths and tunnel spacing surpasses eleven times of footing widths, beyond which additional support is unnecessary. For lined tunnels, the tunnel-lining thickness required to maintain footing stability equivalent to that on intact rock decreases rapidly with embedment depth. At a tunnel spacing equal to onehalf of the footing width, the critical lining-thickness ratio is about six percent of the footing width at a tunnel depth of half the footing width, reducing to approximately five, four, and three percent at depths of one,one-and-a-half,and two footing widths, and asymptotically approaching nearly one percent for embedment depths exceeding two-and-a-half footing widths.Additionally, rock mass parameters exhibit minimal impact(±2%)on I_(f).The results show that failure mechanisms in footing-tunnel systems are primarily governed by tunnels-positional parmeters, and lining thickness. The study presents a mechanistic framework that delineates the critical depth-spacing-thickness regimes controlling twin-tunnel behavior, providing engineers with clear design boundaries and performance-based lining guidelines to improve the stability of both tunnels and overlying foundations. 展开更多

Monocolumn composite bucket foundation is a new type of offshore wind energy foundation. Its bearing characteristics under shallow bedrock conditions and complex geological conditions have not been extensively studied. Therefore,to analyze its bearing characteristics under complex conditions-such as silty soil, chalky soil, and shallow bedrock-this paper employs finite element software to establish various soil combination scenarios. The load-displacement curves of the foundations under these scenarios are calculated to subsequently evaluate the horizontal ultimate bearing capacity. This study investigates the effects of shallow bedrock depth, the type of soil above the bedrock, the thickness of layered soil, and the quality of layered soil on the bearing characteristics of the monocolumn composite bucket foundation.Based on the principle of single-variable control, the ultimate bearing capacity characteristics of the foundation under different conditions are compared. The distribution of soil pressure inside and outside the bucket wall on the compressed side of the foundation, along with the plastic strain of the soil at the base of the foundation,is also analyzed. In conclusion, shallow bedrock somewhat reduces foundation bearing capacity.Under shallow bedrock conditions, the degree of influence on foundation bearing capacity characteristics can considerably vary on different upper soils. The thickness of each soil layer and the depth to bedrock in stratified soils also affect the bearing capacity of the foundation. The findings of this paper provide a theoretical reference for related foundation design and construction. In practice, the bearing performance of the foundation can be enhanced by improvingthe soil quality in the bucket, adjusting the penetration depth, adjusting the percentage of different types of soil layers in the bucket, and applying other technical construction methods. 展开更多

Magnetorheological(MR)bearings, with their field-controllable rheological properties, offer new possibilities for control of rotor instabilities. However, their nonlinear dynamic behaviors and the underlying physical mechanisms governing these instabilities remain insufficiently understood. This work develops a coupled MR bearingrotor system model, where the oil film force is derived from a novel bilinear constitutive equation to capture the field-sensitive shear behaviors of MR fluids.Complex nonlinear dynamic behaviors including period doubling,quasi-period,and chaos are revealed, which emerge from the interaction between oil film vortex dynamics and magnetic excitation. The critical instability mechanism is identified from the evolution of intrinsic dynamic characteristics of MR bearings. When the whirl speed within the oil film reaches approximately half of the rotor speed, the damping force balances the destabilizing force, thereby defining a critical threshold beyond which the system transitions to instability. This threshold can be effectively tuned by adjusting the excitation current, which modifies the yield stress of MR fluids and consequently regulates the damping force. As a result, the nonlinear vibrations of oil whirl and whip can be suppressed, and the system stability can be significantly enhanced. These findings provide both theoretical insight and practical guidance for the design and control of MR bearing supported rotor systems. 展开更多

Owing to the harsh conditions, wind turbine bearings are prone to faults, and the resulting fault information is easily submerged by strong noise disturbance, making conventional diagnosis challenging. Therefore, this study presents an innovative bearing fault diagnosis approach predicated on Parameter⁃Optimized Symplectic Geometry Mode Decomposition(POSGMD)and Improved Convolutional Neural Network(ICNN).Firstly, assisted by the relative entropy⁃based adaptive selection of embedding dimension,a POSGMD is presented to adaptively decompose the collected bearing vibration signals into various Symplectic Geometry Components(SGC),which can solve the problem of manual selection of the embedding dimension in the raw Symplectic Geometry Mode Decomposition(SGMD).Meanwhile, the signal reconstruction on the decomposed SGC is conducted based on kurtosis⁃weighted principle to obtain the reconstructed signals.Subsequently, the Continuous Wavelet Transform(CWT)of the reconstructed signals is calculated to generate the corresponding time⁃frequency images as sample set. Finally,an ICNN is introduced for model training and automatic recognition of bearing faults. Two case studies are used to validate the presented methods efficacy.Comparing the presented method with traditional fault diagnosis methods, experimental results show that it can achieve greater identification accuracy and superior anti⁃noise resilience. This work provides a practical and effective solution for fault diagnosis in wind turbine bearings, contributing to the timely detection of faults and the reliable operation of wind turbines or other rotational machinery in industrial applications. 展开更多
