The increasing occurrence of corrosion-related damage in steel pipelines has led to the growing use of composite-based repair techniques as an efficient alternative to traditional replacement methods.Computer modeling and structural analysis were performed for the repair reinforcement of a steel pipeline with a composite bandage.A preliminary analysis of possible contact interaction schemes was implemented based on the theory of cylindrical shells, taking into account transverse shear deformations. The finite element method was used for a detailed study of the stress state of the composite bandage and the reinforced section of the pipeline. The limit state of the reinforced section was assessed based on the von Mises criterion for steel and the Tsai-Wu criterion for composites. The effectiveness of the repair was demonstrated on a pipeline whose wall thickness had decreased by 20%as a result of corrosion damage. At a nominal pressure of P=6 MPa,the maximum normal stress in the weakened area reached 381 MPa.The installation of a composite bandage reduced this stress to 312 MPa,making the repaired section virtually as strong as the undamaged pipeline.Due to the linearity of the problem, the results obtained can be easily used to find critical internal pressure values. 展开更多

Wearable sensing systems have been designed to monitor health conditions in real-time by detecting analytes in human biofluids.Wound diagnosis remains challenging, necessitating suitable materials for high-performance wearable sensors to offer prompt feedback.Existing devices have limitations in measuring pH and the concentration of pH-dependent electroactive species simultaneously, which is crucial for obtaining a comprehensive understanding of wound status and optimizing biosensors. Therefore, improving materials and analysis system accuracy is essential. This article introduces the first example of a flexible array capable of detecting pyocyanin,a bacterial virulence factor, while correcting dynamic pH fluctuations. We demonstrate that this combined sensor enhances accuracy by mitigating the impact of pH variability on pyocyanin sensor response.Customized screen-printable inks were developed to enhance analytical performance. The analytical performances of two sensitive sensor systems(i.e.,fully-printed porous graphene/multiwalled carbon nanotube(CNT)and polyaniline/CNT composites for pyocyanin and pH sensors)are evaluated.Partial least square regression is employed to analyze nonzero-order data arrays from square wave voltammetric and potentiometric measurements of pyocyanin and pH sensors to establish a predictive model for pyocyanin concentration in complex fluids. This sensitive and effective strategy shows potential for personalized applications due to its affordability, ease of use,and ability to adjust for dynamic pH changes. 展开更多

AIM: To compare the clinical performance of two types of silicon hydrogel contact lenses used as bandage lenses after LASEK surgery. METHODS: A prospective, double-masked study was conducted on 42 eyes of 21 patients who received binocular LASEK surgeries. The interocular difference in spherical equivalent power was less than -1.50D. Patients were randomly assigned to wear Galyfilcon A (Lens A) bandage contact lens in one eye and Balafilcon A (Lens B) in the fellow eye after the surgery. The responses to a subjective questionnaire on comfort of wearing, corneal epithelial status, conjunctival hyperemia, limbal neovascularization, lens fitting and contact lens debris were assessed 1 and 5 days postoperatively. Corneal endothelium was assessed before and 5 days after the surgery upon bandage lens removal. RESULTS: There was no difference between the two groups in terms of conjunctival hyperemia, limbal neovascularization, contact lens fitting, corneal epithelial status, corneal endothelium cell density (CD) and endothelium cell size (CS) at any postoperative visit. Complaints of discomfort, including foreign body sensation, pain and intolerance were statistically more among Lens B wearers at any postoperative visit (P < 0.05). Lens B appeared to attract much more debris than Lens A at the 5-day post-operative follow-up visit (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The two types of silicon hydrogel lenses investigated in this study demonstrated similar clinical performance in terms of corneal responses and lens fitting. However, Lens A showed a better performance in terms of comfort of wearing and deposit resistance. 展开更多

AIM: To observe the curative effect of bandage contact lens in neurogenic keratitis.METHODS: Twenty cases of neurogenic keratitis were studied at the Department of Ophthalmology, the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University, between October 2012 and June 2013. These included 13 males and 7 females, aged from 35 to 88 y. Patients were voluntarily divided into an experimental group(lens wearing group, n =10) and control group(drug therapy,n =10). In experimental group patients wore silicone hydrogel bandage soft contact lens. Both groups used the following eyedrops: 0.5% levofloxacin TID; 0.5%Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose QID; fibroblast growth factor BID; ganciclovir BID [cases complicated with herpes simplex virus(HSV)]; compound tropicamide BID(cases concurrent hypopyon). The healing time of corneal ulcer and complication rates were observed in the two groups.RESULTS: The healing time of corneal ulcer in the experimental group was 10.80±4.44 d versus 46.70±13.88 d in the control group(P 【0.05). No complications occurred in the experimental group, except for the lens falling off twice in one case, the patient recovered eight days after rewearing the lens. While in the control group, all cases vascularized, 2 cases were complicated with descemetocele that recovered with amniotic membrane transplantation and 1 case was complicated with corneal perforation that recovered by autologous conjunctival flap covering.CONCLUSION: Bandage contact lens is a safe and effective method of treating neurogenic keratitis andsignificantly shortened the healing time of corneal ulcer. 展开更多

AIM: To evaluate the safety of therapeutic bandage contact lens for post-cataract surgery patients and to illustrate its efficacy on post-operative comfort and tear-film stability. METHODS: A total of 40 participants were recruited and randomly divided into two groups. Group one was instructed to wear bandage contact lenses for a week and use antibiotic eye drops for a month since the first day after surgery. Group two received sub-conjunctival injection of tobramycin and was asked to wear eye pads on the first day after surgery and then were instructed to use antibiotic eye drops as the first group did. Ocular surface disease index(OSDI) questionnaire, slit-lamp microscope examination of tear break-up time(TBUT), corneal fluorescein score(CFS), tear meniscus height(TMH) together with anterior segment optical coherence tomography(AS-OCT) and corneal topography were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively. RESULTS: The subjective feeling(P=0.004), TBUT(P〈0.001) and TMH(P=0.02) post-surgery had improved in patients who used bandage contact lenses compared with those who did not at 1wk post-surgery. Until three month postoperatively, the comfort degree(P=0.004) and TMH(P=0.01) of group two were still worse than group one. Moreover, TBUT(P〈0.001) and CFS(P=0.004) of the group with eye pads got worse than the results before, whereas the group with bandage contact lenses recovered to normal. None of these patients had infections or other complications. CONCLUSION: Wearing therapeutic bandage contact lens after cataract surgery, compared with traditional eye-pads, is a safe method to improve tear-film stability and reduce post-operative discomfort without hindering corneal incision recovery. 展开更多

Appropriate compression bandaging is important for compression therapeutic medical diseases. The high compression approach employed for treating venous leg ulcers should be used correctly so that sufficient (but not excessive) pressure is applied. Bandages used to treat venous disease by compression should achieve and sustain effective levels and gradients of pressure and minimize the risk of pressure trauma. To maintain graduated compression on the limb, the bandage needs to be applied at the same tension for each layer from the ankle to the knee. In this paper, the geometry for various bandaging procedures is used to wrap each layer of bandage by marking the relaxed length of the bandage. The relaxed length is calculated depending on the stretch%, the average circumference of the limb to which it is to be applied and the bandaging technique to be used. This paper aims at developing a scientific approach while applying the bandage to reduce the inter operator variability in applying the same tension on each successive layer of bandage. 展开更多

Despite the promising potential of smart bandages in wound care, the lack of effective integration among infection control, exudate management, and real-time wound monitoring remains a major obstacle in clinical application.Herein,neomycin(NEO)-grafted cellulose-based nonwovens(CNs)were used as the antibacterial network and blueberry extract(anthocyanin,AC)as the colorimet-ric additive to create the excellent dual network gel(DNG)bandage for smart bandages along with a polyvinyl alcohol/cellulose nanofiber(PVA/CNFs)matrix.The aerogel bandage loaded with AC demonstrates a pH-sensitive color-changing response and high-efficiency free radical scavenging ability(all greater than 93.61%),enabling the in-situ monitoring of wound healing and inhibiting wound inflammation, while the nonwoven network grafted with NEO endows the aerogel composites with excellent antibacterial properties(>99%against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli). In vivo evaluation using a S.aureus-infected full-thickness wound model in mice demonstrated that the DNG bandage significantly accelerated wound healing and improved tissue regeneration, outperforming commercial dressings.Furthermore, upon absorbing exudate, the aerogel converts into a hydrogel, providing efficient fluid absorption and preventing wound re-contamination,thereby achieving dynamic exudate management.Evidently, the DNG smart bandage is a promising management tool for the synergistic treatment of persistent wounds and introduces a fresh strategy for medical regenerative medicine. 展开更多

Tissue injury leads to gradients of chemoattractants, which drive multiple processes for tissue repair, including the inflam-matory response as well as endogenous cell recruitment. However,a limited time window for the gradients of chemoattract-ants as well as their poor stability at the injury site may not translate into healthy tissue repair.Consequently, intelligent multifunctional scaffolds with the capability to stabilize injury-induced cytokines and chemokines hold great promise for tissue repair.Vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)plays a significant role in wound healing by promoting angiogen-esis.The overarching objective of this research was to develop intelligent multifunctional scaffolds with the capability to endogenously recruit VEGF and promote wound healing via angiogenic and immunomodulatory dual functions.Prominin-1-derived peptide(PR1P)was encapsulated into electrospun poly(L-lactide-coglycolide)/gelatin(P/G)-based bandages. The sustained release of PR1P recruited VEGF in situ, thereby stabilizing the protein concentration peak in vivo and affording a reparative microenvironment with an adequate angiogenic ability at the wound site.Meanwhile,PR1P-recruited VEGF-induced macrophage reprogramming towards M2-like phenotypes further conferred immunomodulatory functions to the bandages. These dual functions of proangiogenesis and immunomodulation formed a cascade amplification, which regulated matrix metalloproteinases(MMP-9)as well as inflammatory factors(nuclear factor(NF)-κb,tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α)in the wound microenvironment via the VEGF/macrophages/microenvironment axis.Consequently, the bandages realized multifunctional regeneration in splinted excisional wounds in rats, with or without diabetes, affording a higher skin append-age neogenesis, sensory function, and collagen remodeling.Conclusively, our approach encompassing in situ recruitment of VEGF at the injury site with the capability to promote immunomodulation-mediated tissue repair affords a promising avenue for scarless wound regeneration, which may also have implications for other tissue engineering disciplines. 展开更多

Although conventional suturing techniques are commonly used in assisting wound closure, they do pose limited conduciveness and may lead to secondary injury to wound tissues.Inspired by marine organism mussels,we designed and manufactured a bio-inspired hydrogel-based bandage with tough wet tissue adhesion to substitute traditional surgical suture, accelerate wound healing and avoid infection.Poly(γ-glutamic acid)was modified with 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine and glycidyl methacylate, then introduced into the acrylic acid-co-acrylamide hydrogel matrix with robust mechanical properties. The hydrogel bandage showed strong chemical linkage adhesion(70±2.1 kPa),which is 2.8 times that of commercial tissue adhesive fibrin glue(25±2.2 kPa).The hydrogel bandage can not only maintain the self-stability,but is also capable of self-tuning adhesive strength in the range of 14-70 kPa to achieve different adhesion effects by tuning constituent ratio. The bandage has desirable compression properties(0.7±0.11 MPa)and tensile elongation(about 25 times),which ensures its resistance to damages, especially in joint spaces.Secondly, the bandage was endowed with antioxidant and endogenous broad-spectrum antibacterial properties with its catechol structure. Results also demonstrated excellent cell compatibility and blood compatibility, certifying its eligible biological safety profile. In a rat full-thickness cutaneous deficiency model,we can clearly observe that the bandage possesses the ability to promote wound healing(only need 6 days).Above all, this research provides a new strategy for the emergency treatment of liver hemostasis and myocardial repair during disaster rescue. 展开更多

After fluid resuscitation, the animals were randomly divided into two groups (n=-8 each) and were either treated with absorbable bandage wrapping of the injured lobe of liver (Group B) or hepatic Iobectomy (Group H). Time to hemostasis, blood loss during the treatment period, and other parameters were compared, including postoperative serum total bilirubin (TB), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Results Blood loss during the treatment period was significantly lower in Group B than that in Group H ((81.3±26.0) ml vs. (130.8±2.9.5) ml, P=0.0031). Serum AST and ALT were transiently increased post-surgically. These transient increases were significantly higher in Group B. No difference in time to hemostasis was noted ((8.70±2.27) minutes vs. (10.28±1.93) minutes, P=-0.1559) in Groups B and H, respectively. Two pigs were humanely euthanized 28 days post-surgically and the wrapped liver lobes appeared atrophies. Microscopically, there was evidence of emerging and mature fibrous tissue. Conclusion Absorbable bandaqe wrappinQ is both feasible and effective in the treatment of severe blast liver injury. 展开更多

Biofilm infections, chronic inflammation, and delayed new blood vessel generation all prolong the treatment proceeding of diabetic wounds.Several treatment methods exist for the healing of diabetic wounds, incorporating tough debridement, surgical techniques to promote blood vessel development, antibiotic treatments, and the use of bioengineered tissues as options1,2.However,the comprehensive nature of chronic wound development regularly reduces the efficacy of these methods in treating diabetic wounds. Thus,to effectively tackle the cure concerns related to diabetic wounds, progress ought to develop multifunctional therapeutic approaches with anti-inflammatory,anti-bacterial,and angiogenesis effects. 展开更多
