Recent years, some data scheduling algorithms are proposed either to optimize the perceived video quality, or to optimize the network throughput. However, optimizing the perceived video quality may lead to low utilization of the senders'upload capacity. On the other hand, optimizing the network throughput may lead to the degrading perceived quality, for some emergent data may not be transmitted in time. In this paper, to improve the two objectives simultaneously, we formulate the data scheduling problem as a multi-objective model. In the formulation, we not only consider the segment quality and emergency which affect the perceived video quality, but also consider the rarity of the segments, which influences the network throughput. Then, we propose a distributed data scheduling algorithm to solve the multi-objective problem in polynomial time. Through simulations, we show the proposed algorithm outperforms other conventional algorithms in perceived video quality and utilization of peers' upload capacity.展开更多

MPEG-4 AVOs are extracted and classified into different groups according to their priority values and scalable layers (visual importance). These priority values are mapped to the 1P DiffServ per hop behaviors (PHB). This scheme can selectively discard packets with low importance, in order to avoid the network congestion. Simulation results show that the quality of received video can gracefully adapt to network state, as compared with the ‘best-effort' manner. Also, by allowing the content provider to define prioritization of each audio-visual object, the adaptive transmission of object-based scalable video can be customized based on the content.展开更多

Multimedia streaming applications need new approaches to multimedia transmissions to meet the growing volume demand and quality expectations of multimedia traffic. This paper studies network coding which is a promising paradigm that has the potential to improve the performance of networks for multimedia streaming applications in terms of packet delivery ratio (PDR), latency and jitter. This paper examines several network coding protocols for ad hoc wireless mesh networks and compares their performance on multimedia streaming applications with optimized broadcast protocols, e.g., BCast, Simplified Multicast Forwarding (SMF), and Partial Dominant Pruning (PDP). The results show that the performance increases significantly with the Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) scheme.展开更多

However, the workloads of the VMs are hardly to be predicted for online video surveillance service. The unknown arrival workloads easily lead to workload skew among VMs. In this paper, we study how to balance the workload skew on online video surveillance system. First, we design the system framework for online surveillance service which con- sists of video capturing and analysis tasks. Second, we propose StreamTune, an online resource scheduling approach for workload balancing, to deal with irregular video analysis workload with the minimum number of VMs. We aim at timely balancing the workload skew on video analyzers without depending on any workload prediction method. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of the proposed approach using a traffic surveillance application. The experimental results show that our approach is well adaptive to the variation of workload and achieves workload balance with less VMs.展开更多
