Approximate Method for Reliability Assessment of Complex Phased Mission Systems

Phased-mission systems (PMSs) have wide applications in engineering practices, such as manmade satellites. Certain critical parts in the system, such as cold standby, hot standby and functional standby, are designed in redundancy architecture to achieve high reliability performance. State-space models such as Markov process have been used extensively in previous studies for reliability evaluation of PMSs with dynamic behaviors. The most popular way to deal with the dynamic behaviors is Markov process, but it is well known that Markov process is limited to exponential distribution. In practice, however, the lifetime of most machinery products can follow non-exponential distributions like the Weibull distribution which cannot be handled by the Markov process. In order to solve this kind of problem, we present a semi-Markov model combined with an approximation algorithm to analyze PMS reliability subjected to non-exponential failures. Furthermore, the accuracy of the approximation algorithm is investigated by comparing to an accurate solution, and a typical PMS (attitude and orbit control system) is analyzed to demonstrate the implementation of the method. © 2017, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. 展开更多

The performance of structures with active variable stiffness (AVS) systems exhibits strong nonlinearity due to the variety with time of the stiffness of each storey unit,in which the AVS system is installed.Hence,the classical dynamic analysis method for linear structures,such as the mode-superposition method,is not applicable to structures with AVS systems.In this paper,an approximate analysis method is proposed for displacement responses of structures with AVS systems.Firstly,an equivalent relationship between single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structures equipped with AVS systems and so-called fictitious linear structures is established.Then,an approximate mode-superposition (AMS) method is presented for multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structures equipped with AVS systems.The accuracy of this method is investigated through extensive parametrical study using different types of earthquake excitations,and some modification is made to the method. Numerical calculation results indicate that the modified AMS method is effective for estimating the maximum displacements relative to the ground and the maximum interstorey drifts of MDOF structures equipped with AVS systems. 展开更多

The nonlinear traveling wave vibration of rotating ferromagnetic functionally graded(FG)cylindrical shells under multi-physics fields is investigated.Grounded in the Kirchhoff-Love thin shell theory,the geometric nonlinearity is incorporated into the model,and the constitutive equations are derived.The physical parameters of functionally graded materials(FGMs),which exhibit continuous variation across the thickness gradient,are of particular interest.The nonlinear magneto-thermoelastic governing equations are derived in accord with Hamilton's principle.The nonlinear partial differential equations are discretized with the Galerkin method,and the analytical expression of traveling wave frequencies is derived with an approximate method.The accuracy of the proposed method is validated through the comparison with the results from the literature and numerical solutions.Finally,the visualization analyses are conducted to examine the effects of key parameters on the traveling wave frequencies.The results show that the factors including the power-law index,temperature,magnetic field intensity,and rotating speed have the coupling effects with respect to the nonlinear vibration behavior. 展开更多

Under suitable conditions, some strong convergence theorems are proved. Our results extends the recent results in G.L.Acedo and H.K.Xu [2], Zhang, Lee and Chan [8], Wakahashi and Toyoda [9], Takahashi and Takahashi [I0] and S. S. Chang, H. W. Joseph Lee and C. K. The aim of this paper is to employ fractional order proportional integral derivative(FO-PID)controller and integer order PID controller to control the position of the levitated object in a magnetic levitation system(MLS),which is inherently nonlinear and unstable system.The proposal is to deploy discrete optimal pole-zero approximation method for realization of digital fractional order controller.An approach of phase shaping by slope cancellation of asymptotic phase plots for zeros and poles within given bandwidth is explored.The controller parameters are tuned using dynamic particle swarm optimization(d PSO)technique.Effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified by simulation and experimental results.The performance of realized digital FO-PID controller has been compared with that of the integer order PID controllers.It is observed that effort required in fractional order control is smaller as compared with its integer counterpart for obtaining the same system performance. 展开更多

The shape approximation method has been proven to be rapid and practicable in resolving low-thrust trajectory;however,it still faces the challenges of large deviation from the optimal solution and inability to satisfy the specific flight time and fuel mass constraints.In this paper,a modified shape approximation low-thrust model is presented,and a novel constrained optimization algorithm is developed to solve this problem.The proposed method aims at settling the bi-objective optimization orbit involving the twin objectives of minimum flight time and low fuel consumption and enhancing the accuracy of optimized orbit.In particular,a transformed high-order polynomial model based on finite Fourier series is proposed,which can be characterized as a multi-constraint optimization problem.Then,a novel optimization algorithm is specifically developed to optimize the large-scale multi-constraint dynamical equations of shape trajectory.The key performance indicators of the index include minimum flight time,low fuel consumption and bi-objective optimization of the two.Simulation results prove that this approach possesses both the high precision achievable by numerical methods and low computational complexity offered by shape approximation techniques.Besides,the Pareto front of the fuel-time bi-objective optimization orbit is firstly introduced to analyze an intact optimal solution set.Furthermore,we have demonstrated that our proposed approach is appropriate to generate the preliminary orbit for pseudo-spectral method. 展开更多

An intrinsic extension of Pad′e approximation method, called the generalized Pad′e approximation method, is proposed based on the classic Pad′e approximation theorem. According to the proposed method, the numerator and denominator of Pad′e approximant are extended from polynomial functions to a series composed of any kind of function, which means that the generalized Pad′e approximant is not limited to some forms, but can be constructed in different forms in solving different problems. Thus, many existing modifications of Pad′e approximation method can be considered to be the special cases of the proposed method. For solving homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits of strongly nonlinear autonomous oscillators, two novel kinds of generalized Pad′e approximants are constructed. Then, some examples are given to show the validity of the present method. To show the accuracy of the method, all solutions obtained in this paper are compared with those of the Runge–Kutta method. 展开更多

Systemreliability sensitivity analysis becomes difficult due to involving the issues of the correlation between failure modes whether using analytic method or numerical simulation methods.A fast conditional reduction method based on conditional probability theory is proposed to solve the sensitivity analysis based on the approximate analytic method.The relevant concepts are introduced to characterize the correlation between failure modes by the reliability index and correlation coefficient,and conditional normal fractile the for the multi-dimensional conditional failure analysis is proposed based on the two-dimensional normal distribution function.Thus the calculation of system failure probability can be represented as a summation of conditional probability terms,which is convenient to be computed by iterative solving sequentially.Further the system sensitivity solution is transformed into the derivation process of the failure probability correlation coefficient of each failure mode.Numerical examples results show that it is feasible to apply the idea of failure mode relevancy to failure probability sensitivity analysis,and it can avoid multi-dimension integral calculation and reduce complexity and difficulty.Compared with the product of conditional marginalmethod,a wider value range of correlation coefficient for reliability analysis is confirmed and an acceptable accuracy can be obtained with less computational cost. 展开更多

Then we prove that the Hausdorff measure Hs(S) of the Sierpinski gasket S can be approximated by {Pn(S)} with Pn(S)/(l + l/2n-3)s≤Hs(S)≤ Pn(S). An algorithm is presented to get Pn(S) for n ≤5. As an application, we obtain the best lower bound of Hs(S) till now: Hs(S)≥0.5631. 展开更多

Hybrid molecule/cluster statistical thermodynamics (HMCST) method is an efficient tool to simulate nano-scale systems under quasi-static loading at finite temperature. In this paper, a self-adaptive algorithm is developed for this method. Explicit refinement criterion based on the gradient of slip shear deformation and a switching criterion based on generalized Einstein approximation is proposed respectively. Results show that this self-adaptive method can accurately find clusters to be refined or transferred to molecules, and efficiently refine or trans- fer the clusters. Furthermore, compared with fully atomistic simulation, the high computational efficiency of the self-adaptive method appears very attractive. 展开更多
