Objective:To investigate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of the ethanol extract of leaves of Helianthus annus L.(H.annus) in acclimatized Wistar rats.Methods:It was undertaken using the albumin induced paw...Objective:To investigate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of the ethanol extract of leaves of Helianthus annus L.(H.annus) in acclimatized Wistar rats.Methods:It was undertaken using the albumin induced paw edema model of inflammation as well as both the hotplate and tail immersion analgesic test methods.Doses of the extract tested in experimental rats were 0.5 g/kg,2 g/kg and 4 g/kg while negative and positive control rats received distilled water and indomethacin respectively.Results:It was shown that treatment with the tested doses of the extract effectively inhibited paw edema induced by egg albumin.This effect was comparable if not better than the observations made in rats treated with 10 mg/kg of indomethacin orally.Treatment with the extract was also observed to have significantly increased the mean tolerance time of rats to thermal noxious stimuli compared to control animals that had distilled water and appeared to be more effective than 10 mg/kg of indomethacin treatment.Conclusions: These observations confirmed the presence of a strong anti-inflammatory and anti-noiciceptive activity in the ethanol extract of the leaves of H.annus and therefore validated the folkloric use of the leaves of this plant in treatment of pro-inflammatory,post traumatic situations.展开更多

Few studies have been conducted to show the efficiency of intercropping between plants of...One of the difficulties in the implementation of agroenergy’s cropping is the growing area competition with subsistence crops. Few studies have been conducted to show the efficiency of intercropping between plants of energy’s potential with cultures of economic sustainability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of intercropping sunflower cultivars with corn and beans, in the initial growth under localized irrigation. The experiment was conducted at the end of the year 2012, in an area of 950 m2, located in the Campus II-UEPB, Lagoa Seca, Paraíba. The irrigation system was managed based on the Reference Evapotranspiration (ETo), calculated by the Penmann-Monteith Method with data obtained locally. The experimental design was a randomized blocks factorial (2 × 4) × 3, with treatments combining two varieties of sunflower in four plantation systems: single or isolated, intercropped with maize, with bean and with caupi. Each plot consisted of four rows of sunflowers in spacing 0.3 × 0.7 m and length of 5 m, interspersed with rows of beans or corn, except in the isolated system. The central rows of sunflowers were used to measure the following growth characteristics: plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and leaf área. Data were subjected to analysis of variance by F test and the means compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. The diversification of sunflower varieties promoted differences in initial growth, regardless of the cropping system. There was significant effect at 15 DAS, where the sunflower variety “Advanta CF101” had higher plants than the variety “Hélio 253” at 40 DAS;the variety “Hélio 253” had a stem diameter greater than the “Advanta CF101”.展开更多
Sunflower petal is one of the parts of the sunflower which has drawn attention and has several applications these days.These applications justify getting information about physical properties,mechanical properties,dry...Sunflower petal is one of the parts of the sunflower which has drawn attention and has several applications these days.These applications justify getting information about physical properties,mechanical properties,drying trends,etc.in order to design new machines and use new methods to harvest or dry the sunflower petals.For three varieties of sunflower,picking force of petals was measured;number of petals of each head was counted;unit mass and 1000-unit mass of fresh petals were measured and length,width,and projected area of fresh petals were calculated based on image processing technique;frequency distributions of these parameters were modeled using statistical distribution models namely Gamma,Generalized Extreme Value(G.E.V),Lognormal,and Weibull.Results of picking force showed that with increasing number of days after appearing the first petal on each head from 5 to 14 and decreasing loading rate from 150 gmin^-1 to 50 g min^-1 values of picking force were decreased for three varieties,but diameter of sunflower head had different effects on picking force for each variety.Length,width,and number of petals of Dorsefid variety ranged from 38.52 to 95.44 mm,3.80 to 9.28mm and 29 to 89,respectively.The corresponding values ranged from 34.19 to 88.18 mm,4.28 to 10.60 mm and 21 to 89,respectively for Shamshiri variety and ranged from 44.47 to 114.63 mm,7.03 to 20.31 mm and 29 to 89 for Sirena variety.Results of frequency distribution modeling indicated that in most cases,G.E.V and Weibull distributions had better performance than other distributions.展开更多
