Most were peasants, largely illiterate, and with no sense of an Italian identity as their ancestral home had only been liberated from centuries of foreign rule in 1861. This study utilizes primary and secondary documents, as well as archival sources and interviews to determine the role of sport in the transition to an Italian identity, and then an American identity within the assimilation process. Second generation youth adopted American sport forms, and some became national heroes in contrast to the stereotype of Italian gangsters. By the 1950s Italians had become icons of popular culture, yet negative stereotypes persisted and assimilation remained fragmented.展开更多
This study investigates the influence of major climatic modes on the interannual variability of the annual minimum extent of Antarctic sea ice.It shows that the Southern Annular Mode(SAM),the Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD),...This study investigates the influence of major climatic modes on the interannual variability of the annual minimum extent of Antarctic sea ice.It shows that the Southern Annular Mode(SAM),the Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD),and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO),along with the total sea ice condition during the preceding spring,serve as precursor signals of February sea ice extent(SIE).These climate modes interact,energizing the Pacific-South American pattern(PSA),which deepens and shifts the Amundsen Sea Low(ASL)westward in spring.This pattern generates a dipole sea ice anomaly characterized by an increase in sea ice in the northern Ross Sea but a decrease in ice in the Bellingshausen and northern Weddell Seas.However,as the season transitions into summer,the ASL exerts a pronounced delayed effect,contributing to widespread sea ice loss across West Antarctica.Strong southerly winds on the western flank of the ASL push sea ice away from the inner Ross Sea,exposing coastal waters that absorb solar radiation,thereby accelerating ice melt through positive ice-albedo feedback.Simultaneously,northwesterly winds on the eastern flank transport warm air toward the Bellingshausen and northern Weddell Seas,intensifying ice loss in these regions.Furthermore,the active PSA is accompanied by a tripole sea surface temperature pattern characterized by warming in the Weddell Sea,which promotes continued ice melt.The co-occurrence of an exceptionally positive SAM,a La Niña,and a strong negative IOD during spring 2022,combined with lower-than-normal total spring SIE,ultimately contributed to the record-low Antarctic SIE observed in February 2023.展开更多

Wetlands are unique ecological environments capable of harboring high biodiversity.However,urbanization can degrade,eliminate,or transformthese habitats.Although amphibians utilize habitats created by humans in urban ...Wetlands are unique ecological environments capable of harboring high biodiversity.However,urbanization can degrade,eliminate,or transformthese habitats.Although amphibians utilize habitats created by humans in urban landscapes,few studies have investigated the infuence of thehabitat quality on the life history of anurans.We assessed life history traits such as snout-vent length(SVL),body condition,and reproductiveinvestment in the South American common toad Rhinella arenarum,to determine whether urbanization is harmful or benefcial to this species.We sampled wetlands with different levels of urbanization in Río Cuarto city,Córdoba,Argentina.We recorded males with lower SVL in mediumurbanized wetlands and those with the highest SVL in both low and high urbanization categories,similar to what was found for body conditionswith males with low body conditions inhabiting wetlands with a medium degree of urbanization.In females,lower SVL was recorded in mediumurbanization and highest SVL in high and low urbanization.It is observed that females recorded in highly urbanized wetlands have a very lowbody condition.The reproductive investment parameters were not signifcantly different,but we observed an association between a greaternumber of eggs and clutch size with wetlands of low urbanization.These results show a variability of responses of R.arenarum to urbanization,which could be due to phenotypic plasticity in its life history parameters,allowing it to inhabit urban areas.Continuous monitoring of the speciesin these wetlands is needed to determine if these biological responses are temporary or persistent.展开更多
As the population of older Asian Americans continues to grow rapidly,understanding their mental health needs has become increasingly critical.This literature review summarizes current issues,developments,and future di...As the population of older Asian Americans continues to grow rapidly,understanding their mental health needs has become increasingly critical.This literature review summarizes current issues,developments,and future directions in addressing the mental health challenges faced by older Asian Americans in the last five years.We briefly touch on the comparative prevalence of mental health disorders experienced by ethnic subgroups.Additionally,we review recent studies highlighting the role of the coronavirus disease 2019,racism,social support,cultural stigma,and self-rated health as significant factors influencing mental well-being of this population.We discuss the utilization of health services among older Asian Americans.We conclude with thoughts for future research,emphasizing the importance of longitudinal studies,consideration of diverse Asian American ethnic subgroups,and culturally sensitive diagnostic and treatment approaches.展开更多
BACKGROUND Total hip arthroplasty is a safe and effective procedure.To improve survivorship,ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene hip liners with antioxidants have been developed.Additive antioxidant was deployed to...BACKGROUND Total hip arthroplasty is a safe and effective procedure.To improve survivorship,ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene hip liners with antioxidants have been developed.Additive antioxidant was deployed to reduce oxidation and consequential wear,loosening,or osteolysis.A unique manufacturing process was utilized for two such hip liners,the Novation®and Alteon®XLE hip liners and this research represents the first large series on this specific material.The study hypothesis was that Novation and Alteon XLE hip liners have similar short-term survivorship as other manufacturers’antioxidant liners according to procedure and outcome data from the American Joint Replacement Registry(AJRR).AIM To demonstrate similar short-term survivorship of XLE antioxidant hip liners compared to all antioxidant hip liners in AJRR.METHODS Utilizing total hip arthroplasty data from the AJRR,a retrospective review was performed for subjects who underwent implantation of Novation XLE(n=461),Alteon XLE(n=989),or any other antioxidant hip liner(termed the aggregate antioxidant group;n=39964)as of March 31,2022.Survivorship at three years and revision rates were compared statistically between the Novation group and the aggregate antioxidant group as well as the Alteon group and the aggregate antioxidant group.RESULTS Survivorship at three years post-surgery was 99.09%for Novation,97.73%for Alteon,and 97.69%for the aggregate antioxidant group.There were no reports of failure due to wear in either the Novation or Alteon groups.Among the revision categories(fracture,infection,aseptic loosening,instability,mechanical complications,wear,pain,hematoma/wound complications,or other),there were no significant differences identified in either comparison.There were also no significant differences in cumulative percent revision rates up to three years post-surgery for the Novation vs aggregate antioxidant group or the Alteon vs aggregate antioxidant group.CONCLUSION Novation and Alteon XLE hip liner revision rate and survivorship are equivalent to other antioxidant hip liners in the short term.展开更多
BACKGROUND Arabic-speaking patients are underrepresented in orthopedic clinical studies,particularly in foot and ankle trauma research.The lack of validated Arabic language tools hinders their inclusion,creating a nee...BACKGROUND Arabic-speaking patients are underrepresented in orthopedic clinical studies,particularly in foot and ankle trauma research.The lack of validated Arabic language tools hinders their inclusion,creating a need for culturally and linguistically adapted instruments.The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Foot and Ankle Outcomes Questionnaire(AAOS-FAOQ)is a widely used tool but has not been adapted for Arabic-speaking patients.AIM To translate,cross-culturally adapt,and validate the AAOS-FAOQ for Arabicspeaking patients with traumatic foot and ankle injuries.METHODS The cross-cultural adaptation followed established guidelines,involving forward and backward translations,expert review,and pre-testing.The final Arabic version was administered alongside the Arabic Short-Form 36(SF-36)to 100 patients for validity testing.Reliability was assessed through test-retest methods with 20 patients completing the questionnaire twice within 48 hours.Pearson correlation coefficients measured convergent and divergent validity with SF-36 subscales,while Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficients(ICC)determined internal consistency and reliability.RESULTS Out of 100 patients,92 completed the first set of questionnaires.The Arabic AAOS-FAOQ showed strong correlations with the SF-36 subscales,particularly in physical function and bodily pain(r>0.6).Test-retest reliability was robust,with ICCs of 0.69 and 0.66 for the Global Foot and Ankle Scale and Shoe Comfort Scale,respectively.Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency ranged from 0.7 to 0.9.CONCLUSION The Arabic version of the AAOS-FAOQ demonstrated validity and reliability for use in Arabic-speaking patients with traumatic foot and ankle injuries.This adaptation will enhance the inclusion of this population in orthopedic clinical studies,improving the generalizability of research findings and patient care.展开更多

文摘BACKGROUND Total hip arthroplasty is a safe and effective procedure.To improve survivorship,ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene hip liners with antioxidants have been developed.Additive antioxidant was deployed to reduce oxidation and consequential wear,loosening,or osteolysis.A unique manufacturing process was utilized for two such hip liners,the Novation®and Alteon®XLE hip liners and this research represents the first large series on this specific material.The study hypothesis was that Novation and Alteon XLE hip liners have similar short-term survivorship as other manufacturers’antioxidant liners according to procedure and outcome data from the American Joint Replacement Registry(AJRR).AIM To demonstrate similar short-term survivorship of XLE antioxidant hip liners compared to all antioxidant hip liners in AJRR.METHODS Utilizing total hip arthroplasty data from the AJRR,a retrospective review was performed for subjects who underwent implantation of Novation XLE(n=461),Alteon XLE(n=989),or any other antioxidant hip liner(termed the aggregate antioxidant group;n=39964)as of March 31,2022.Survivorship at three years and revision rates were compared statistically between the Novation group and the aggregate antioxidant group as well as the Alteon group and the aggregate antioxidant group.RESULTS Survivorship at three years post-surgery was 99.09%for Novation,97.73%for Alteon,and 97.69%for the aggregate antioxidant group.There were no reports of failure due to wear in either the Novation or Alteon groups.Among the revision categories(fracture,infection,aseptic loosening,instability,mechanical complications,wear,pain,hematoma/wound complications,or other),there were no significant differences identified in either comparison.There were also no significant differences in cumulative percent revision rates up to three years post-surgery for the Novation vs aggregate antioxidant group or the Alteon vs aggregate antioxidant group.CONCLUSION Novation and Alteon XLE hip liner revision rate and survivorship are equivalent to other antioxidant hip liners in the short term.
文摘BACKGROUND Arabic-speaking patients are underrepresented in orthopedic clinical studies,particularly in foot and ankle trauma research.The lack of validated Arabic language tools hinders their inclusion,creating a need for culturally and linguistically adapted instruments.The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Foot and Ankle Outcomes Questionnaire(AAOS-FAOQ)is a widely used tool but has not been adapted for Arabic-speaking patients.AIM To translate,cross-culturally adapt,and validate the AAOS-FAOQ for Arabicspeaking patients with traumatic foot and ankle injuries.METHODS The cross-cultural adaptation followed established guidelines,involving forward and backward translations,expert review,and pre-testing.The final Arabic version was administered alongside the Arabic Short-Form 36(SF-36)to 100 patients for validity testing.Reliability was assessed through test-retest methods with 20 patients completing the questionnaire twice within 48 hours.Pearson correlation coefficients measured convergent and divergent validity with SF-36 subscales,while Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficients(ICC)determined internal consistency and reliability.RESULTS Out of 100 patients,92 completed the first set of questionnaires.The Arabic AAOS-FAOQ showed strong correlations with the SF-36 subscales,particularly in physical function and bodily pain(r>0.6).Test-retest reliability was robust,with ICCs of 0.69 and 0.66 for the Global Foot and Ankle Scale and Shoe Comfort Scale,respectively.Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency ranged from 0.7 to 0.9.CONCLUSION The Arabic version of the AAOS-FAOQ demonstrated validity and reliability for use in Arabic-speaking patients with traumatic foot and ankle injuries.This adaptation will enhance the inclusion of this population in orthopedic clinical studies,improving the generalizability of research findings and patient care.

文摘The problem of overseas Chinese identity is a hot spot in the field of overseas Chinese research in recent years.It reflects the Chinese’s cognition,emotion,and behavior of ethnic characteristics.This paper takes Chinese college students with American nationality as the research object,visiting universities in North Carolina and California as visiting scholars and doctoral students,and summarizes and analyzes the identity characteristics of contemporary Chinese American college students and puts forward corresponding suggestions through in-depth interviews with 46 Chinese American college students and 12 Chinese families.

文摘With nearly three-quarters of global deaths attributed to lifestyle-associated di-seases,effective lifestyle modifications are more urgent than ever.The American Heart Association’s framework for cardiovascular health has evolved signifi-cantly,transitioning from'Life’s Simple 7'to'Life’s Essential 8'with the incorpo-ration of sleep,and further to'Life’s Essential 9'by adding mental health as a key component.Despite these advancements,recent evidence reveals a persistently low prevalence of ideal cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health behaviors across populations.These findings highlight the critical gap in addressing modi-fiable lifestyle and psychosocial factors.To reduce the global disease burden,public health strategies must prioritize comprehensive interventions that encom-pass physical,neurological,and mental well-being.
