Famously he wrote: "Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality". The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock is a poem with a notable modern emotional coloring. The title of the poem is ironic in that the "Love Song" is in fact about the absence of love. It is interesting also for its method of presentation.Eliot’s poetry said more about the moden chaos and their volumes put together.展开更多

Alfred Prufrock" have been explored variously, the language techniques in this poem have been rarely investigated. This thesis tries to analyze these symbols to find the theme of the poem. By using symbol analysis, the values and the spiritual world of the early 20th century generation can be clearly known. There are four sections in this thesis. The first section makes a brief introduction of T. S. Eliot. The second section gives the basic theory about symbol and symbolism. In the third section, different symbol analyses with different details are presented by five subsections, that is, symbols of streets, symbols of body parts, symbols of ocean, symbols about time and other symbols. In the fourth section, the theme of the poem —the disillusionment of the post-war generation is analyzed. The conclusion summarizes the importance of symbolic language techniques used in the poem.展开更多

This thesis attempts to deeply analyze the difference of transformation between Eliza and her father Alfred from three perspectives of motivation, progress and result. Trough the comparison of their transformation the author aims to enrich the interpretations and understandings of Shaw’s female characters, as well as to draw people’s attention to female issues which still exist in modern society.展开更多
