Few studies have been conducted on sandalwood ecology in this region, and ours is the first recorded study of essential oil content and chemical composition of heartwood. We harvested two trees with State permission and took cross-sections for analysis. We demonstrated a difference in the heartwood formation and oil yield of the trees. The composition of the oil was found to be consistent between trees and along the trunk of the tree. Main aromatic compounds were santalols and other compounds are recorded in lesser quantities. Results of this study comply with the other published work on sandalwood elsewhere. This initial study on S. album in Sri Lanka provided promising results for the future of sandalwood agroforestry.展开更多

Different exposition durations with cold plasma treatment were applied. The variable of the ratio cumulative germination was calculated. The Richards' equation was used for curve-fitting and simulation of the growth curves. Population parameters, namely Vi - viability, Me - time, Qu - dispersion, and Sk - skewness, counted from the curves described the germination rate well. Significant differences among Qu confirmed the erratic dormancy and gradual germination of Lamb's Quarters. No difference in the Me parameter was found between two tested seed lots, and no interspecies characteristics were changed using low-pressure discharge. The results suggested that plasma treatment changed seed germination in Lamb's Quarters seeds.展开更多

The structural heterogeneity of condensed tannins from stem bark was characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses The results show the predominance of signals representative of procyanidins and prodelphinidins. In addition, epicatechin and epigallocatechin polymers with galloylated procyanidin or prodelphinidin were also observed. The tannins were screened for their potential antioxidant activities using l,l-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) model systems. Tannins extracted from leaves, twigs and stem bark all showed a very good DPPH radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing power.展开更多

Five different growth substrates, lateritic subsoil, burnt soil, agricultural soil, peaty soil and coconut dust, were used as the basic culture materials and seven different treatments of composition were used as potting media. Kuhnia rosmarinifolia Vent. was used as a primary host plant for all treatments. Statistically significant differences were found between treatments in respects of survival rate (p 〈 0.001), height (p 〈 0.001), ground diameter (p 〈 0.001) and biomass (p = 0.002), as well as for quality index (p 〈 0.001) of S. album seedlings after 6-month growth in containers with different culture media. Among all treatments, the treatment combining burnt soil, peat and coconut dust in a weight ratio of 1:1:1 plus 2% calcium super-phosphate as basal manure achieved the best performance for most of the seedling growth parameters, including survival rate (98%), height (35.81 cm), ground diameter (0.56 cm), biomass (4.46 g) and quality index (0.65), followed by the treatment using only burnt soil plus 2% calcium super-phosphate as the culture medium (survival rate 86%, height 29.23 cm, ground diameter 0.48 cm, biomass 3.36 g and quality index 0.52), while the treatment using only lateritic subsoil plus the basal manure as the medium obtained the poorest results in survival rate (38%), height (12.04 cm), ground diameter (0.19 cm), biomass (0.26 g) and quality index (0.043). Increasing the proportion of lateritic subsoil in the medium when mixed with peat and coconut dust did not show statistically significant differences in survival, height, ground diameter, biomass nor in quality index. In consideration of cost, using burnt soil plus 2% calcium super-phosphate as basal manure may be the optimum culture medium for large-scale production of Indian sandal- wood seedlings in Guangdong, southern China.展开更多

Kuhnia rosmarinifolia Vent. is a good host for 1- or 2-year-old growing S. album. The interaction between S. album and K. rosmarinifolia is still little known. Many studies have been carried out on a number of plants for identification and diversity of endophytes. In this study, in total 25 taxa of endophytic fungi were isolated from the roots of S. album and the roots of K. rosmarinifolia. The most frequently isolated genera were Penicillium sp. 1 and Fusarium sp. 1 in the roots of S. album and K. rosmadnifolia, respectively. S. album is a root parasite of K. rosmarinifolia. The interesting result is that they apparently do not share the same endophytic fungi isolates. This study for the first time explored the content of endophytic fungi from S. album and K. rosmarinifolia, which provides important information for further studies.展开更多

When the NaCl concentration was less than 0.4%, the seedling growths of the four Canavium album Raeuseh cultivars were not af- fected. But when the NaCI concentration was increased, the critical salinities inhibit- ing radicle growth were different among the four cultivars (Huiyuan, 1.0%; Chayao No.1, 1.2%; Sanfang, 1.4%; Frantoio, 1.6%). Among the four test cuttivars, the sen- sitivities to NaCl stress ranked as Huiyuan 〉 Chayao No.1 〉 Sanfang 〉 Frantoio.

文摘Santalum album (Indian Sandalwood) is found in the mountainous regions of the intermediate zone of Sri Lanka. This initial study on S. album in Sri Lanka provided promising results for the future of sandalwood agroforestry.

文摘Low-pressure discharge is applied for stimulation of germination of two seed lots of Lamb's Quarters (Chenopodium album agg.) with different starting germinations (17%, 8%) and in different stages of dormancy. The results suggested that plasma treatment changed seed germination in Lamb's Quarters seeds.

文摘The contents of total phenolics and extractable condensed tannins in the leaves, twigs and stem bark of Canarium album were determined. Tannins extracted from leaves, twigs and stem bark all showed a very good DPPH radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing power.

文摘We studied the effects of different culture media on the growth of India sandalwood (Santalum album L.) seedlings in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province in southern China. In consideration of cost, using burnt soil plus 2% calcium super-phosphate as basal manure may be the optimum culture medium for large-scale production of Indian sandal- wood seedlings in Guangdong, southern China.

文摘Mistletoes are parasite plants growing on various tree species, taking nutrients from the host.Beneficial compounds of mistletoe were used in medicine and these mistletoes were commonly collected from oak species that were not well identified. We analyzed the nutritional value by measuring proximate and mineral components of Korean mistletoe(Viscum album var.coloratum)from various host trees.Carbohydrate was the most proximate component in both leaves and twigs followed crude protein, crude fiber, crude ash and crude fat. While the contents of the proximate components and minerals varied among hosts and between plant parts, leaves contained higher crude protein and ash,and more minerals except for magnesium than twigs, although no significant difference was found inmistletoe grown on Prunus mandshurica. There were significant differences of proximate and mineral contents depending on the host species.Mistletoe grown on Chaenomeles sinensis contained higher levels of carbohydrates, crude fat, crude ash, magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron, and zinc than mistletoe grown on other species.Mistletoe grown on P.mandshurica contained high mineral levels of potassium, copper and phosphorous. The nutritional value of mistletoes were greatly influenced by the host species but among the hosts, specific nutrients accumulated in leaves more than in twigs, and vice versa.Based on the analysis,Korean mistletoe contains relatively good quality of nutrients and has high potential for dietary supplements as well as for medicinal compounds.

文摘Objective To screen forα-glucosidase inhibitor active compounds in the total saponins of Baibiandou(Lablab Semen Album)based on UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS technology and to evaluate its hypoglycemic activity in vivo. Methods Acarbose was used as the positive control, and the median inhibitory concentration(IC50)was used as the evaluation index ofα-glucosidase inhibitory activity to establish an in vitroα-glucosidase inhibition model.Further,UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS technology was used to screen and identify the active compounds ofα-glucosidase inhibitors in the total saponins of Baibiandou(Lablab Semen Album)in order to further verify the activity of the main active monomer and to perform homologous modeling and molecular docking of yeast-derivedα-glucosidase and human-derivedα-glucosidase,while the hypoglycemic activity was evaluated in diabetic mice. Results This study successfully identified 15 compounds with potentialα-glucosidase inhibitory activity, including Chikusetsusaponin IVa,from the total saponins of Baibiandou(Lablab Semen Album).Simultaneously,we verified the activity of the main active monomer Chikusetsusaponin IVa,and showed that it has strongα-glucosidase inhibitory activity.Theα-glucosidase inhibitory concentration IC50 was(565.2±1.026)μg/m L,and the IC50 of acarbose, which was lower than the positive control,was(706.6±1.058)μg/m L.The docking energies of Chikusetsusaponin IVa were–6.1 and–7.7 kcal/mol with yeast-derivedα-glucosidase and human-derivedα-glucosidase molecules, respectively. Both showed strong binding activity, and the levels of alanine aminotransaminase(ALT),aspartate aminotransaminase(AST),UREA,Creatinine(CREA),and cholesterol(CHO)were significantly decreased by Chikusetsusaponin IVa(P<0.05).In addition,it could repair damaged liver and pancreas cells of diabetic mice to some extent. Conclusion This study provides a basis for screeningα-glucosidase inhibitors and structural modifications of the total saponins of Baibiandou(Lablab Semen Album).

文摘Santalum album Linn. is an evergreen and hemi-parasitic tree, the heartwood-sandalwood of which was used during a long history in traditional Chinese medicine. This study for the first time explored the content of endophytic fungi from S. album and K. rosmarinifolia, which provides important information for further studies.
