BACKGROUND Adolescents with an evening chronotype are at higher risk for mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are not well understood.Sleep disturbances and impaired social functioning may mediate this association.AIM To examine the mediating roles of sleep quality and social functioning in the relationship between chronotype and mental health in adolescents.METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 381 adolescents(mean age 14.3 years;61.9%male)using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire,Hamilton Depression Rating Scale,Hamilton Anxiety Scale,Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Social Disability Screening Schedule.Descriptive statistics,Pearson correlation analyses, and chain mediation analysis using the bootstrap method were performed.RESULTS Chronotype was significantly associated with both depression and anxiety.Sleep quality and social functioning significantly mediated these relationships. The indirect effect on depression was-0.52,accounting for 69.3%of the total effect. For anxiety, the indirect effect was -0.39, accounting for 79.3%. No significant direct effect of chronotype on depressionor anxiety was found after accounting for the mediators.CONCLUSIONSleep quality and social functioning mediate the association between chronotype and adolescent mental health. These findings highlight the importance of addressing sleep disturbances and social functioning impairments ininterventions aimed at improving mental well-being among adolescents with evening chronotypes. 展开更多

Adolescent depressive symptoms represent a significant public health concern, with negative life events and dysfunctional attitudes playing pivotal roles in theirdevelopment.A cross-sectional study by Yu et al assessed the interplay betweendysfunctional attitudes, social support, and depressive symptoms in 795 Chineseadolescents(49.9%male,mean age 15.2±1.8 years, age range 11-18 years)fromfive middle schools in Shandong Province.Using the Dysfunctional AttitudesScale,Adolescent Life Events Scale,Beck Depression Inventory, and SocialSupport Rating Scale, the study identified that dysfunctional attitudes,particularlyover-autonomy and over-perfectionism,mediate the relationship betweennegative life events and depressive symptoms.Social support moderated thisrelationship, significantly reducing depressive symptoms. These findingsunderscore the need for preventive and therapeutic strategies targeting dysfunctionalattitudes and enhancing social support to address adolescent depressivesymptoms. In this article,we extend their findings to highlight the significance ofculturally tailored interventions that incorporate familial and communitydynamics in mitigating depressive symptoms, particularly in collectivist societies. 展开更多

While the relation between shyness and problematic social media use(PSMU)among adolescents has been established, the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this association remain largely unexplored. The present study examined whether psychological insecurity mediated the association between shyness and adolescents’PSMU and whether this mediation was moderated by relational-interdependent self-construal(RISC).A total of 1506 Chinese adolescents(Mage=13.74 years,SD=0.98)filled out self-report measures of shyness, psychological insecurity,RISC,and PSMU.SPSS(version 23.0)and the PROCESS macro(version 4.1)were employed to test the proposed model.Mediation analyses indicated that psychological insecurity mediated the association between shyness and adolescent PSMU.Furthermore, moderated mediation tests revealed that RISC moderated thefirst half of the mediation path, whereby RISC ameliorated the detrimental effects of shyness on psychological insecurity, consequently reducing the risk of PSMU.The present study provides further evidence on the mediating and moderating mechanisms between shyness and PSMU,which has important implications for the prevention and intervention of PSMU.For adolescents who exhibited pronounced shyness and low levels of RISC,a promising strategy for mitigating their PSMU would be interventions designed to cultivate social skills, alleviate psychological insecurity, and enhance their RISC. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Adolescence is a period marked by physiological and psychological imbalances, which pose an increased risk for adolescents with major depressive disorder(MDD)to commit non-suicidal self-injury(NSSI).AIM To investigate the moderating role of social support utilization in depression and NSSI among adolescents with MDD.METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled 314 adolescents with MDD(258 with NSSI,56 without)from a Chinese tertiary psychiatric hospital(2021-2023).Participants completed validated scales, including the self-esteem scale, the Barratt impulsiveness scale, the self-rating depression scale, and the teenager social support rating scale.Logistic regression and hierarchical regression analyses were used to examine predictors of NSSI and the moderating effect of social support utilization.RESULTS Results showed that the NSSI group had higher depression levels, lower selfesteem, and greater impulsivity. While overall social support was higher in the NSSI group, social support utilization significantly moderated the depression-NSSI relationship.Specifically, higher utilization levels weakened the association between depression and NSSI(β=-0.001,P<0.05).CONCLUSION These findings suggest that effective utilization of social support, rather than its mere presence,is crucial in reducing NSSI risk among depressed adolescents. 展开更多

Social cognition constitutes a fundamental component in establishing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships, achieving social goals, and effectively regulating emotions within social contexts.Inspired by a recent study examining the chain mediating roles of perceived social adversity and security in the relationship between impulsive personality and suicidal behaviors among depressed adolescents, this editorial synthesizes advances in social cognition research specific to adolescent depression.Research methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and neuroscientific insights in this domain have evolved substantially over the past fifteen years.Whereas earlier investigations primarily emphasized broad behavioral observations, contemporary research increasingly integrates neuroimaging techniques, computational modeling, and refined experimental paradigms.Current understanding of specific cognitive biases such as distinctions between interpretive and attentional biases has also grown more nuanced. This editorial reflects the evolving nature of the field by presenting shifts in research focus and demonstrating how these changes have deepened our understanding of social-cognitive functioning in adolescent depression.Building on this synthesis,we outline limitations of extant research and suggest promising directions for future inquiry. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Depression is a common mental disorder among adolescents, characterized by a high rate of suicide and self-harm,which not only is devastating to families but also has a negative impact on society.Psychological factors such as impulsive personality, perceived chronic social adversity(PCSA),and sense of security are closely associated with suicide risk in adolescents with depression.Few studies have been conducted on the relationship between these factors.AIM To explore the impact of impulsive personality on suicide risk in adolescents with depression and the chain mediating effect between PCSA and sense of security.METHODS This study is a retrospective study.A total of 200 adolescents with depression who visited the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Maternal and Child Health Hospital from January 2021 to December 2023 comprised the study cohort. The PCSA scale,Security Questionnaire,Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, and Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation were used to evaluate depression.RESULTS Suicide risk was positively correlated with impulsive personality and PCSA(P<0.05),whereas sense of security was negatively correlated with suicide risk, impulsive personality, and PCSA(P<0.05).The total indirect effect of PCSA and sense of security on impulsive personality and suicide risk was 35.43%,with the mediating effect of PCSA and sense of security contributing 16.53%and 15.75%,respectively.PCSA and sense of security exhibited a chain mediating effect between impulsive personality and suicide risk, accounting for 3.15%.CONCLUSION The suicide risk of adolescents with depression is significantly associated with impulsive personality,PCSA,and sense of security.Impulsive personality affects the suicide risk of adolescents with depression both directly and indirectly, with the latter occurring via PCSA and sense of security. 展开更多

Adolescent depression is a growing global health concern, affecting 14%of adolescents and leading to severe consequences such as academic failure, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation. The study by Yu et al,investigates the cognitive and social factors influencing depression in 795 Chinese adolescents.Findings reveal that negative life events(NLEs)and dysfunctional attitudes are strongly associated with depressive symptoms, while social support moderates the impact of NLEs but not dysfunctional attitudes. The study highlights the need for cognitivebehavioural interventions targeting perfectionism and autonomy, and the importance of strengthening social support systems in schools and communities.Culturally sensitive, holistic approaches to adolescent mental health are crucial for addressing both the internal vulnerabilities and external pressures contributing to depression.Further research is needed to explore the roles of peer and parental support and the long-term effects of these factors across diverse cultural contexts. 展开更多

The effect of gender and knowledge of someone with mental illness was measured. METHODS: Two hundred and eighty secondary school students were evaluated using the Community Attitudes towards Mental Illness(CAMI) questionnaire. The schools were randomized and some received the intervention and others acted as the control group. The programme consisted of providing information via a documentary film and of contact with healthcare staff in order to reduce the social stigma within the school environment. RESULTS: The intervention was effective in reducing the CAMI authoritarianism and social restrictiveness subscales. The intervention showed significant changes in girls in terms of authoritarianism and social restrictiveness, while boys only showed significant changes in authoritarianism. Following the intervention, a significant reduction was found in authoritarianism and social restrictiveness in those who knew someone with mental illness, and only in authoritarianism in those who did not know anyone with mental illness. CONCLUSION: The intervention was effective to reduce social stigma towards people with mental illness, especially in the area of authoritarianism. Some differences were found depending on gender and whether or not the subjects knew someone with mental illness. 展开更多

The general objective of this study is to identify the specific needs of youths who have suffered a moderate or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their levels of life habit accomplishments. The secondary objective aims to identify how they view themselves in the future with regard to their life habits. Eighteen young persons with moderate or severe TBIs aged 14 to 20 completed questionnaires based on the Life-Habits questionnaire and elaborated on their current level of satisfaction and their visions of the future. Teenagers reported that maintaining good interpersonal relationships, being autonomous, fulfilling their responsibilities, warding off lone-liness, as well as being supported in their efforts to reach a satisfying response to their needs and concerns were their highest priorities. In order to increase their satisfaction related to life habits they suggest improving external factors, such as information concerning TBIs to their entourage. They see themselves as complete social participants in the future. Youths with moderate or severe TBIs identified their needs and envisioned their future to be like that of any other teenager and young adult. They hope to start a family and find a good job. They also identified strategies to improve their life habits. 展开更多

The purpose of this study was to examine how academic stress and perceived social support influence the psychological wellbeing of Senior High School students in Ghana. Two hundred and twenty six male and female students participated. The general health questionnaire, student life-stress inventory and perceived social support from family and friends scales were used to assess psychological wellbeing, academic stress and perceived social support respectively. The results indicated that perceived social support buffered the effects of academic stress on psychological wellbeing. Girls reported higher scores on perceived social support but reported more depression. Boys reported higher academic stress and better psychological wellbeing, and these have been attributed partly to the socialisation role of gender. These results have policy implications in respect of the creation of a cordial school environment as well as encouraging a healthy interpersonal relationship between adolescents and their family and friends with the aim of reducing academic stress appraisal which is inimical to the psychological wellbeing of adolescents. 展开更多

Adolescents are considered one of the most vulnerable groups affected by suicide.Rapid changes in adolescents’physical and mental states,as well as in their lives, significantly and undeniably increase the risk of suicide.Psychological, social, family, individual, and environmental factors are important risk factors for suicidal behavior among teenagers and may contribute to suicide risk through various direct, indirect,or combined pathways.Social-emotional learning is considered a powerful intervention measure for addressing the crisis of adolescent suicide. When deliberately cultivated, fostered, and enhanced,selfawareness,self-management,social awareness, interpersonal skills, and responsible decision-making,as the five core competencies of social-emotional learning, can be used to effectively target various risk factors for adolescent suicide and provide necessary mental and interpersonal support.Among numerous suicide intervention methods,school-based interventions based on social-emotional competence have shown great potential in preventing and addressing suicide risk factors in adolescents. The characteristics of school-based interventions based on social-emotional competence, including their appropriateness,necessity,cost-effectiveness,comprehensiveness,and effectiveness, make these interventions an important means of addressing the crisis of adolescent suicide. To further determine the potential of school-based interventions based on social-emotional competence and better address the issue of adolescent suicide, additional financial support should be provided, the combination of socialemotional learning and other suicide prevention programs within schools should be fully leveraged, and cooperation between schools and families, society, and other environments should be maximized. These efforts should be considered future research directions. 展开更多

Depression is one of the most common psychological disorders that affect adolescents. In this study, we investigated how depression in adolescents relates to social support, religiosity, and spirituality in multivariate analyses. We also investigated whether age, gender and ethnicity are predictors of depression among adolescents in a faith-based high school. We measured social support using the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale (CASSS), religiosity with the Duke University Religion Index (DUREL);spirituality with the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS);and depression with the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children (CES-DC). Results of the bivariate analyses showed a significant negative association between depression and social support, religiosity, and spirituality (p –0.548, p = 0.00) was negatively related to depression in adolescents. The study found significant gender differences only in religiosity, while significant ethnic differences were only found in social support. Implications to education, practice, research and future directions of study are discussed. 展开更多

Background: Designing a need-based social protection intervention for children comes as comprehensive tool for addressing the overall quality of life of HIV positive children. Not much has been examined on what constitute the desired social protection framework for HIV positive children. Methods: This study was informed by a qualitative descriptive exploratory design approach. The study drew insights from the shared perspectives of 27 participants sampled from positive HIV status disclosed children—10 - 17 years, healthcare workers, Social and Development worker, HIV positive caregivers and parents from 7 ART clinics in rural and urban Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions of Ghana. Data was collected through interviews and two focus group discussions with study participants. Drawing on the emerged themes from the transcripts, thematic content analysis was used to analyze the data using comparative thematic framework approach. Findings: The eclectic perspectives on the type of social protection policy/intervention preferred demonstrated the need for an interrelated and integrated social protection policy. This should not be designed in isolation towards addressing the child vulnerability. The study found that social protection policies aimed at addressing vulnerability levels of children should consider the dual vulnerability situation within which HIV positive children and adolescents are located. A set of unique specific tailored approach and package reflecting minimum combination social protection package to HIV positive children was considered essential for inclusion. The themes that emerged covered social policy/intervention package inclusive of a disease ending/eradication intervention package, cash transfer for children and their caregivers, free comprehensive health insurance integrating all consultancy and laboratory services charges, direct food supplements supply and nutritional support, research, target specified with evidenced-based monitoring. Counseling support and preferential treatment for children visiting ART for treatment were to be included. Conclusion: Combination social protection intervention packages remain the pathway to yielding maximum dividends on any social intervention that seeks to address the vulnerability levels of HIV positive children in Ghana. This should be designed taking into consideration the preference of the main target beneficiaries (HIV positive children) while accounting for the inclusion of the technical expertise of implementing stakeholders in the policy design from conceptualization to evaluation. 展开更多

This study attempted to identify the factors underlying social distance. The participants were 2690 parents of adolescents. Factor analysis using a social distance scale identified two factors: private relationship and social relationship. Regression analysis revealed that gender, age, and participation in welfare activities for people with mental illnesses had independent effects on the factor private relationship (p < 0.05). These results suggest that women aged 40 - 49 years should be targeted for activities that attempt to counteract social distance and that they would benefit from taking part in public welfare activities for individuals with mental illnesses. 展开更多

Background: Adolescents who rely on social aid networks tend to be more socially competent and enjoy higher levels of quality of life than those who interact only with their own limited groups of family and friends. In this light, the present study aimed to measure social capital and analyse its possible relation to adolescents’ quality of life. Methods: This is a cross-sectional analytical study with 363 adolescents from the Brazilian NGO. The instruments used included a short Portuguese version of the Integrated Questionnaire to Measure Social Capital (SC-QI) from the World Bank and its abbreviated Portuguese version from the World Health Organization Quality of Life Bref (WHOQoL-Bref) used to measure the quality of life. To measure social capital, the present study chose to use a segmentation analysis, along with the Two-Step Cluster method, applying Euclidian distance and the criteria of centroid aggregation. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the scores of WHOQoL-Bref domains among the clusters, at a significance level of 5%. Results: The segmentation analysis resulted in two clusters, with 160 (44.1%) adolescents classified as Low Social Capital (LSC) and 178 (49%) classified as High Social Capital (HSC). Participation in activities for the good of the community (p < 0.001), opinion regarding the differences between people in the community (p = 0.002), and number of community meetings (p < 0.001) constituted the decisive variables for determining the separation of the clusters. When quality of life among the newly formed clusters was compared, the highest average score in the HSC cluster was found in the Psychological Domain (75.4 ± 11.9), whereas in the LSC cluster, the highest average score was found in the Physical Domain (74.6 ± 12.6). Lower quality of life scores was found in the environmental domain for both the LSC clusters (51.3 ± 14.0) and the HSC clusters (54.7 ± 15.5). This difference proved to be statistically significant (p = 0.009). Conclusions: The results showed that adolescents with higher social capital also presented higher scores concerning quality of life. For the studied population, a positive relation between the two concepts was verified. 展开更多

METHODS: A cross-sectional study nested within a phase 2b randomised, placebo controlled, double blind study and consisted of 824 adolescents, 13 - 15 years old who had received Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, were attending public secondary schools and had no evidence of active tuberculosis (TB). Anthropometric measurements were obtained, a questionnaire administered, and phlebotomy performed for a T spot interferon-γ?release assay (IGRA) to detect LTBI. RESULTS: Among 824 subjects, 149 (18%) had a positive IGRA. After adjusting for the influence of household socioeconomic status, history of TB contact, living environment and nutritional status, LTBI risk was higher in subjects with than without regular informal encounters with traditional alcoholic beverage drinkers (AOR, 6.37 [1.84 - 22.00]). Other significant factors for LTBI risk included contact with TB patient at school (AOR, 3.34 [1.14 - 9.80]), and living close to a health facility, as was observed among those from houses within a 10 - 30-minute walking distance to the nearest health facility, who were less likely to be IGRA-positive than those who were living within a 10-minute walking distance (AOR, 0.30 [95%CI, 0.13 - 0.69]). CONCLUSION: This IGRA study revealed a high prevalence of LTBI among adolescents in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania with prior BCG immunization. Informal social encounters were identified as independent risk factors for LTBI, along with a history of contact with TB patients, living environment characteristics and household socioeconomic status. Efforts focusing on risk of MTB transmission in adolescents at informal social gatherings will improve interventions to reduce LTBI in this population and consequently the subsequent risk of developing active TB disease. 展开更多
