Organic agriculture is gaining momentum in the Philippines as consumers become more health- and environment-conscious. This study investigated soil fertility based on soil chemistry and biological properties of organic vegetable farms in Sariaya, Quezon Province and Los Baños, Laguna Province, with the aim of developing organic agriculture in the Philippines. We utilized the SOFIX (Soil Fertility Index) technology, which is designed to evaluate soil fertility by focusing on the activity and diversity of microbial communities in the soil. This technology provides a scientific assessment of soil health, aiming to contribute to sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation. Soil fertility parameters from four different farms cultivating outdoor organic vegetables were below the recommended values for organic production. Essential macronutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium and total carbon content, which is indicative of soil organic matter, were insufficient. Bacterial biomass for soil organic matter decomposition, and nitrogen and phosphorus circulation was inadequate. These results indicated that organic plots lack the fertility needed for optimal organic crop growth. The poor fertility of these organic plots could be attributed to their recent shift from conventional cultivation, which used synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers, to organic cultivation approximately seven years ago. This shift may harm soil microorganisms, leading to decreased fertility, nutrient availability and hindering the ability to sustain organic production. Overall, the findings of this case study emphasize the significant soil fertility challenges on organic vegetable farms. Therefore, farmers and agricultural practitioners must adopt appropriate soil management practices to improve soil fertility, microbial populations, nutrient availability, and overall soil health for successful organic production. 展开更多

Objective: To observe the effect and clinical significance of circulating endothelial cells (CEC) in the pathogenesis of coronary heart disease with unstable angina pectoris (CHD-UAP), and to explore the protective effect of Chinese herbs for activating blood circulation, removing stasis and supplementing Qi (CH) on CHD-UAP patient's CEC. Methods: Sixty patients with diagnosis of CHD-UAP confirmed and differentiated to be Qi-deficiency and blood stasis by TCM were randomly divided into two groups and treated, on the basis of Western drug-therapy, with Tongxinluo capsule (通心络胶囊, TXL) and Huoxue Tongmai capsule (活血通脉胶囊, HXTM) respectively by way of oral taking three times a day, 3 capsules every time, with 1 month as one therapeutic course. The number of CEC in patients' blood circulation was counted before and after treatment. Besides, the number of CEC in 30 healthy persons was also counted for control. Results: The number of CEC in CHD-UAP patients was significantly higher than that in the healthy persons (P<0.01). After the patients were treated with CH, either TXL or HXTM, it significantly decreased (P<0.01)with insignificant difference between the two treated groups. Conclusion: CEC in CHD-UAP patients is severely damaged and endothelial function in disorder, Chinese herbs have protective effect on patients' CEC. 展开更多

Objective: To observe the effects of Bushen Huoxue Formula (Formula for reinforcing the kidney and activating blood circulation) on the learning and memory function and the cerebral neurotransmitters in diabetic mice. Methods: Forty ICR mice were randomized into the normal control group, model group, Nimotop group and Chinese medicine group, 10 mice in each group. Tail intravenous injection of alloxan was applied to prepare diabetic model. Four weeks later, intragastric administration of Bushen Huoxue Formula for the Chinese medicine group, Nimotop for the Nimotop group, and isometric distilled water for the other two groups were respectively given for 8 weeks. The changes in the blood sugar level were observed; the learning and memory function was detected by Morris labyrinth test; and the contents of norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), 5-hydroxyltryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyl indole acetic acid (5-HIAA) in cerebral cortex were determined in mice of all the groups. Results: The blood sugar levels in the diabetic model mice significantly increased as compared with those of the normal control group determined 72 h and 12 weeks later (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Latencies for Morris labyrinth test in the Nimotop group and the Chinese medicine group were significantly shortened as compared with that in the model group (P<0.01). The contents of cortical NE in the Chinese medicine group was significantly higher than that in the model group (P<0.01). Conclusion: Bushen Huoxue Formula can improve the learning and memory function in the diabetic mice, and the mechanism is possibly related with change of the cortical NE content. 展开更多

Vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia(VBD),a rare posterior circulation vascular variant disease,is an important risk factor for many acute cerebrovascular diseases. An insufficient understanding of VBD often leads to misdiagnose. Two cases of VBD that were initially diagnosed as posterior circulation watershed infarction are reported here.Absence of common causes of stroke including hypoperfusion, blood system diseases, carotid and aortic dissection, and eosinophil elevation, the symptoms of the 2 patients met the diagnostic criteria of VBD.Both patients displayed symptoms that were in line with the Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)syndrome pattern of"Qi deficiency and blood stasis".Accordingly, they were comprehensively treated with Supplementing Qi and activating blood circulation method. The clinical manifestations of the 2 patients were remarkably improved and no recurrence of watershed infarction was found in a 1-year follow-up.A detailed medical history and laboratory examination are capable of improving diagnostic accuracy of VBD.TCM treatment based on syndrome identification might be a promising candidate for VBD management. 展开更多

Objective: To study the targeted point and mechanism of the function of the blood-activating and stasis-removing Chinese drugs, Paeoniae Radix 801(PR801) in its cardiovascular protective effects and its specific binding with endothelin 1(ET-1) as well as the dynamics of the two's interactive function by means of using affinity biosensors: IAsys Plus and quartz crystal microbalance (IAQCM). Methods: ET-1 was immobilized on the surfaces of IAQCM by using the new surface modification methods. The PR801 in the solution was detected by modified substrates and the specific binding between PR801 and ET-1 was studied. Results: The curves went up or down after adding PR801.There is specific binding between PR801 and ET-1. The bound mass were 0.458 ng/mm 2 and 133.54 ng/cm 2, respectively. There exists relatively good stability with these two methods. Conclusion: The affinity biosensors: IAQCM can be used to study the interaction mechanism between PR801 and ET-1, providing a new way to study the interaction mechanism of TCM. PR801 can bind ET-1 specifically in the experiments. Therefore, ET-1 is another target that PR801 can bind specifically besides thromboxane A 2. 展开更多

We compared chemical and biological properties of soils in organically and conventionally fertilized apple orchards in Nagano Prefecture (one of the major apple producing regions in Japan). Five apple orchards with different fertilizer management systems were used for this study. The total carbon and total nitrogen contents were higher in the organically fertilized orchard, while the total phosphorus and total potassium were at similar levels in both organically and conventionally fertilized orchards. The bacterial biomass did not differ between the two orchards, but the N circulation activity was clearly higher in the organically fertilized orchard from April to December. Total carbon from 50,000 to 60,000 mg/kg, total nitrogen at about 3000 to 4000 mg/kg, and a C/N ratio of 15 - 20 were suggested to be suitable conditions for a high level of apple production under an organic fertilizer management system. 展开更多

Background Although antiangiogenesis therapy plays an important role in anti-neoplastic treatment with its recognized efficacy and slight adverse effect, there is no prospective clinical trial to define ideal markers for predicting efficacy of antiangiogenic therapy. This study was undertaken to investigate the changes of activated circulating endothelial cells (aCECs) and survivin after anti-angiogenesis therapy and their significance in predicting the efficacy of the therapy. Methods Patients of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with chemotherapy with or without Endostar were observed. The amount of activated CECs was detected by flow cytometry, and the expression of survivin mRNA was determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results After treatment, the amount of activated CECs decreased significantly in clinical benefit cases (P=0.021 in chemotherapy alone, P=0.001 in chemotherapy plus Endostar), increased in disease progressive cases (P=0.015 in chemotherapy alone, but P=0.293 in chemotherapy with Endotatar). After therapy, the expression of survivin mRNA decreased in clinical benefit cases (P=0.001) and increased in disease progressive cases (P=0.018). A positive correlation was found between activated CECs and survivin in the chemotherapy group pre- and post-therapy (P=0.001 and 0.021, respectively), but only in the chemotherapy with Endostar group pre-therapy (P=0.030) rather than post-therapy. A positive correlation was found between the decreased activated CECs after therapy and time to progression (TTP) (r=0.322, P=0.012); a negative correlation was found between the amount of survivin mRNA in serum post-therapy and -l-I-P(r= -0.291, P=0.048). Conclusions Activated CECs and survivin may be ideal markers forecasting efficacy and prognosis of NSCLC. The former can reflect more sensitively antiangiogenic efficacy and the latter is more sensitive to shrinkage or swelling of tumors. Their combination can evaluate more accurately the efficacy of antiangiogenic therapy of NSCLC. 展开更多

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of the Chinese herbal therapeutic regimen of activating blood circulation (TRABC) in treatment of hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (HICH). Methods: This was a multi-center prospective randomized open-label blinded-endpoint (PROBE) trial with HICH admitted to 12 hospitals. Totally 240 participants were randomized to the treatment group treated with TRABC in addition to conventional Western treatment or the control group with conventional Western treatment equally for 3 months. Primary outcome was degree of disability as measured by modified Rankin Scale (mRS). Secondary outcomes were the absorption of hematoma and edema, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores and patient-reported outcome measures for stroke and Barthel activities of daily living index. Adverse events and mortality were also recorded. Results: After 3 months of treatment, the rate of mRS 0-1 and mRS 0-2 in the treatment group was 72.5% and 80.4%, respectively, and in the control group 48.1% and 63.9%, respectively, with a significant difference between groups (P〈0.01). Hematoma volume decreased significantly at day 7 of treatment in the treatment group than the control group (P=0.038). Average Barthel scores in the treatment group after treatment was 89.11 + 19.93, and in the control group 82.18 + 24.02 (P=0.003). NIHSS scores of the two groups after treatment decreased significantly compared with before treatment (P=0.001). Patient-reported outcomes in the treatment group were lower than the control group at day 21 and 3 months of treatment (P〈0.05). There were 4 deaths, 2 in each group, and 11 adverse events, 6 in the treatment group and 5 in the control group. Conclusion: The integrative therapy combined TRABC with conventional Western treatment for HICH could promote hematoma absorption thus minimize neurologic impairment, without increasing intracerebral hematoma expansion and re-bleeding. 展开更多
