In 2013, a community uprising in Rathupaswala, a village in Gampaha district, accused a latex glove manufacturing factory of causing groundwater acidity (pH < 4). This study evaluates the spatial and temporal changes in geochemical parameters across three transects in the southern part of Gampaha district to 1) assess the impact of geological formations on groundwater;2) compare temporal variations in groundwater;and 3) explain acidification via a geochemical model. Seventy-two sample locations were tested for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and anion concentrations (sulphate, nitrate, chloride and fluoride). Depth to the water table and distance from the sea were measured to study variations across sandy, peaty, lateritic, and crystalline aquifers. Results showed pH readings around 7 for sandy and crystalline aquifers, below 7 for peaty aquifers, and below 5 for lateritic aquifers, with significant water table fluctuations near Rathupaswala area. Principal component analysis revealed three principal components (PCs) explaining 86.0% of the variance. PC1 (40.6%) correlated with pH, EC, and sulphate (saltwater intrusion), while PC2 (32.0%) correlated with nitrates and depth to the water table (anthropogenic nutrient pollution). A geochemical transport model indicated a cone of depression recharged by acidic groundwater from peat-soil aquifers, leading to acidic groundwater in Rathupaswala area. Previous attributions of acidic pH to the over-exploitation of groundwater by the latex factory have been reevaluated;the results suggest natural acidification from prolonged water-rock interactions with iron-rich lateritic aquifers. Groundwater pH is influenced by local climate, geology, topography, and drainage systems. It is recommended that similar water-rock interaction conditions may be present throughout the wet zone of Sri Lanka, warranting detailed studies to confirm this hypothesis.展开更多

Soil samples were collected from the depth 0 - 0.10 m yearly in the spring (5 samples from each locality). In the dry soil, samples were determined actively and exchanged soil reaction. The most significant negative changes (decreases of soil reaction) were determined in Haplic Stagnosols group and Cambisols group. The pH value in topsoil is primarily controlled by soil type and soil substrate, soil management and land use, and to a lesser extent by climatic region.展开更多

The results show that due to excessive application of chemical fertilizer in soil on the south bank of Hongze Lake, soil p H reduced by about 2 on average, while TN content and available phosphorus content in soil increased by more than one time and 2-5 times respectively. Soil acidification caused by agricultural production was very serious. In addition, low soil p H resulted in serious loss of soil cation, so that soil CEC in2013 accounted for less than 50% of that in 1982 and affected mineral nutrient metabolism of crops. Therefore, application of calcium, potassium and trace-element fertilizer should be paid more attention to during agricultural production in future.展开更多

Two Ultisols collected from cropland and a tea garden in Anhui and Jiangxi Provinces in subtropical southern China, respectively, were used to study the effects of urea and (NH4)aSO4 on the nitrification and acidification of soils with incubation experiments. Nitrification occurred at very low pH with no N fertilizer added and led to lowering of the soil pH by 0.53 and 0.30 units for the soils from Jiangxi and Anhui, respectively. Addition of urea accelerated nitrification and soil acidification in both Ultisols; while nitrification was inhibited by the addition of (NH4)2SO4, and greater input of (NH4)2SO4 led to greater inhibition of nitrification. Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) played an important role in nitrification in cropland soil under acidic conditions. Addition of urea increased the soil pH at the early stages of incubation due to hydrolysis and stimulated the increase in the AOB population, and thus accelerated nitrification and soil acidification. At the end of incubation, the pH of Ultisol from Jiangxi had decreased by 1.25, 1.54 and 1.84 units compared to maximum values for the treatments with 150, 300 and 400 mg/kg of urea-N added, respectively; the corresponding figures were 0.95, 1.25 and 1.69 for the Ultisol from Anhui. However, addition of (NH4):SO4 inhibited the increase in the AOB population and thus inhibited nitrification and soil acidification. Soil pH for the treatments with 300 and 400 mg/kg of (NHn)2SOa-N remained almost constant during the incubation. AOB played an important role in nitrification of the cropland soil under acidic conditions. Addition of urea stimulated the increase in the AOB population and thus accelerated nitrification and soil acidification; while addition of (NH4)2SO4 inhibited the increase in the AOB population and thus inhibited nitrification.展开更多

The pearl oyster Pinctada fucata, the noble scallop Chlamys nobilis, and the green-lipped mussel Perna viridis are species of economic and ecological importance along the southern coast of China. We evaluated the effects of seawater acidification on clearance, respiration, and excretion rates in these three species. The animals were reared in seawater at pH 8.1 (control), 7.7, or 7.4. The clearance rate was highest at pH 7.7 for P. fucata and at pH 8.1 for C. nobilis and P. viridis. The pH had little effecton the respiration rate of P. fucata and P. viridis. In contrast, the respiration rate was significantly lower atpH 7.4 in C. nobilis. The excretion rate was significantly lower at pH 7.4 than pH 8.1 for all species. Theresults indicate that the reduction in seawater pH likely affected the metabolic process (food intake, oxygenconsumption, and ammonia excretion) of these bivalves. Different species respond differently to seawateracidification. Further studies are needed to demonstrate the exact mechanisms for this effect and evaluateadaptability of these bivalves to future acidified oceans.展开更多

Strains included parthenogenetic Artemia from Bohai Bay (BHB), Artemiafranciscana from San Francisco Bay, and A. franciscana artificially produced in salt ponds in Vietnam. The latter was included as a potential inoculum for biological management of salt ponds. The hatching percentage of cysts after 24 h and the survival rate of the tested Artemia strains were significantly reduced when exposed to a culture medium at pH 5 for 18 d (P〈0.05). The tolerance of Artemia to 48 h acid exposure varied with developmental stage, increasing in the following order: juvenile, nauplii, pre-adult, with maximum tolerance in adults. All strains of Artemia tested could not reproduce at pH 5. At pH levels from pH 6-8, a higher pH generally resulted in a shorter brood interval and enhanced ovoviviparity. Hence, we suggest that brine acidification has a negative impact on Artemia populations in the Bohai Bay saltworks. Inoculation of Artemia with either local parthenogenetic Artemia or exotic A. franeiscana should be feasible at pH 7-8.展开更多

However, problems of low penetration depth, local overheating and fracture closure exist. Coal demineralisation by acids has advantages in coal unblocking and permeability improvement, while it is difficult for acid to enter microcracks.Microwave-asisted acidification may offer an alternative. In this work, XRD,^(1)H-NMR, and SEM were used to evaluate the effect of microwave-assisted acidification on the microstructure of coal. Results show that kaolinite, calcite, and dolomite can be dissolved by acid. After microwave irradiation, the graphitization of microcrystalline structure of carbon improves. Microwave-assisted acidification erodes minerals in coal and enhances the graphitization degree of microcrystalline structure. Compared to individual microwave irradiation or acidification, the pore volume and pore connectivity can be greatly enhanced by microwave-assisted acidification. The NMR permeability of coal increased by 28.05%. This study demonstrates the potential of microwave-assisted acidification for coalbed methane recovery.展开更多

However, some emulsified coal tar still exists in the influent and many substances in coal tar are refractory and toxic to microorganisms. This study is mainly on the removal of emulsified coal tar by acidification demulsion. The experimental results show that the acidification process of the wastewater by pure hydrochloric acid can reduce the chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), total phenolics and oil about 3.1%-11.3%, 6%-- 10.8%, 5.3%--8.6% and 25.2%--57.4% respectively with pH value in the range of 4 to 7. The analysis of molecular weight distribution indicates that compounds removed from the wastewater by this process are large molecular substances. The experiment also shows that the efficiency of COD removal in the demulsion process by different acids is different and the phosphoric acid is prominent. The preserved time of the wastewater also affects the efficiency of demulsion. Small amount low-cost solid additives including kaolin and diatomite can improve the rate of coal tar sedimentation and enhance the removal efficiency of organics in the phosphoric acidification process.展开更多

文摘Global coral reef ecosystems have been severely degraded due to the combined effects of climate change and human activities.Changes in the seawater carbonate system of coral reef ecosystems can reflect their status and their responses to the impacts of climate change and human activities.Winter and summer surveys in 2019 found that the ecological community of the Luhuitou coral reef flat was dominated by macroalgae and corals, respectively, contrasting with the conditions 10 years ago.The Luhuitou fringing reefs were sources of atmospheric CO_(2) in both seasons. In winter, the daily variation range of dissolved inorganic carbon(DIC)in Luhuitou coral reefs was up to 450μmol/kg,while that of total alkalinity(TA)was only 68μmol/kg.This indicated that the organic production was significantly higher than the calcification process during this period. The TA/DIC was approximately 0.15,which was less than half of that in healthy coral reefs;hence,photosynthesis-respiration processes were the most important factors controlling daily changes in the seawater carbonate system. The net community production(NCP)of the Luhuitou coral reef ecosystem in winter was as high as 47.65 mmol C/(m^(2)·h).While the net community calcification(NCC)was approximately 3.35 and-4.15 mmol CaCO_(3)/(m^(2)·h)during the daytime and nighttime respectively. Therefore, the NCC for the entire day was-21.9 mmol CaCO_(3)/(m^(2)·d),indicating a net autotrophic dissolved state. In summer, the acidification was enhanced by thunderstorms and heavy rain with the highest seawater partial pressure of CO_(2)(p CO_(2))and lowest pH T.Over the past 10 years, the increase rate of seawater p CO_(2) in Luhuitou reef was approximately 13.3μatm/a***,six times that of the open ocean, while the decrease rate of pH was approximately 0.0083/a,being five times that of the global ocean. These findings underscore the importance of protecting and restoring Luhuitou fringing reef,as well as similar reefs worldwide.
文摘Microbiologically driven acidic pollution of coal gangue has become amajor environmental problem in coal gangue dumps in coal mining areas.Addition of bactericides and sulphate reducing bacteria(SRB)is an effective means to control the acidic pollution of coal gangue, but their mechanism of action has not been fully investigated.By adding bactericide,SRB and bactericide-SRB to the newly produced coal gangue, respectively, the effects of these treatments on the microbial community structure were observed.Changes in pH and electrical conductivity(EC)of the gangue leaching solution,as well as themicrobial community composition and functional abundance on the gangue surface were analysed by leaching simulation experiments and 16S rRNA sequencing. The results showed that(1)the addition of bactericide-SRB was the most effective treatment to elevate pH before 8 d,while the addition of SRB performed best after 22 d(2)The addition of bactericide and SRB drastically changed the microbial community structure on the gangue surface.Simultaneous addition of both had the best inhibitory effect on pathogenic bacteria and Thiobacillus.(3)All three treatments promote higher abundance of genes related to nitrogen cycling, but reflected in different gene functions.Microorganisms with sulfate respiration function in the experimental group all showed different increases. The abundance of other sulfur cycle genes decreased substantially. However,Human Pathogens All had higher abundance than control check(CK)in each treatment, whichmay indicate that the addition of either bactericides or SRB increases the risk of microbial pathogenicity to humans.

文摘Soil acidification is a major threat to agricultural sustainability in tropical and subtropical regions.Biodegradable and environmentally friendly materials, such as calcium lignosulfonate(CaLS),calcium poly(aspartic acid)(PASP-Ca),and calcium polyγ-glutamic acid(γ-PGA-Ca),are known to effectively ameliorate soil acidity. However, their effectiveness in inhibiting soil acidification has not been studied. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of CaLS,PASP-Ca,andγ-PGA-Ca on the resistance of soil toward acidification as directly and indirectly(i.e.,via nitrification)caused by the application of HNO_(3)and urea, respectively. For comparison,Ca(OH)_(2)and lignin were used as the inorganic and organic controls, respectively.Among the materials,γ-PGA-Ca drove the substantial improvements in the pH buffering capacity(pHBC)of the soil and exhibited the greatest potential in inhibiting HNO_(3)-induced soil acidification via protonation of carboxyl, complexing with Al~(3+),and cation exchange processes.Under acidification induced by urea,CaLS was the optimal one in inhibiting acidification and increasing exchangeable acidity during incubation.Furthermore, the sharp reduction in the population sizes of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria(AOB)and ammonia-oxidizing archaea(AOA)confirmed the inhibition of nitrification via CaLS application. Therefore, compared to improving soil pHBC,CaLS may play a more important role in suppressing indirect acidification.Overall,γ-PGA-Ca was superior to PASP-Ca and CaLS in enhancing the soil pHBC and the its resistance to acidification induced by HNO_(3) addition, whereas CaLS was the best at suppressing urea-driven soil acidification by inhibiting nitrification. In conclusion, these results provide a reference for inhibiting soil re-acidification in intensive agricultural systems.

文摘The types and contents of phyllosilicate minerals in soils play an important role in soil acidification,as soil acid buffering capacity varies with the composition of the phyllosilicate minerals. In addition to aluminum-oxygen(Al-O)octahedrons,a certain number of Al-O tetrahedrons exist in phyllosilicate minerals due to the isomorphic substitution of silicon ion(Si4+)by aluminum ion(Al3+)in Si-O tetrahedrons of minerals. However, the effect of the two coordination structures of Al on the release of Al during mineral acidification has not yet been investigated. Therefore, the differences in Al activation in phyllosilicate minerals and soils with different Al coordination structures were investigated through constant-p H experiments and27Al magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance(MAS-NMR)measurements.The results of27Al MAS-NMR spectra showed that kaolinite contained Al-O octahedrons, phlogopite and illite contained Al-O tetrahedrons, and vermiculite composite contained both octahedral and tetrahedral Al.At p H<5.1,the content of Al released from minerals during simulated acidification followed the order:illite>vermiculite composite>phlogopite>kaolinite, which was consistent with the orders of cation exchange capacity and content of tetrahedral Al of the minerals.According to the rate constants, the Al release rates were in the order of phlogopite>illite>vermiculite composite>kaolinite at p H 4.8.Except for phlogopite, the Al release rates in these minerals increased with decreasing suspension p H.Therefore, the Al release contents and rates were greater in phlogopite, illite, and vermiculite composite containing Al-O tetrahedrons than in kaolinite containing only Al-O octahedrons. Two Oxisols derived from basalt with different ages were selected for similar studies.The27Al MAS-NMR spectra of the Oxisols showed that the 0.01-million-year(Ma)Oxisol contained both octahedral and tetrahedral Al,while the 1.33-Ma Oxisol contained only Al-O octahedrons. The contents of both exchangeable and soluble Al released from the 0.01-Ma Oxisol were greater than those from the 1.33-Ma Oxisol when the two soils were acidified to the same p H.The results from minerals and soils confirmed that Al was more readily released into solution and exchangeable sites as soluble and exchangeable Al in Al-O tetrahedrons than in Al-O octahedrons during the acidification of soils and minerals. The findings of this study will provide useful references for investigating the mechanisms of solid phase Al release and for mitigating soil acidification and inhibiting Al activation in different soil types.

文摘With the rapid development of oil, energy, power and other industries,CO_(2) emissions rise sharply, which will cause a large amount of CO_(2) in the air be absorbed by the ocean and lead to ocean acidification. The growth and development of organisms can be seriously affected by acidified seawater.Sepia esculenta is a mollusk with high nutritional and economic value and is widely cultured in offshore waters of China.Larvae are the early life forms of the organism and are more vulnerable to changes in the external environment.Too low pH will lead to some adverse reactions in larvae, which will affect metabolism, immune response and other life activities. In this study,we sequenced the transcriptome of S.esculenta subjected to acidified seawater stress and identified 1072differentially expressed genes(DEGs).The detected atypical expression of DEGs substantiates cellular malformation and translocation in S.esculenta under low pH stimulation.Simultaneously, this also substantiates the notable impact of ocean acidification on mollusks. These DEGs were used for functional enrichment analysis of GO and KEGG,and the top twenty items of the biological process classification in GO terms and 11 KEGG signaling pathways were significantly enriched. Finally, the constructed proteinprotein interaction network(PPI)was used to analyze protein-protein interactions, and 12 key DEGs and 3 hub genes were identified. The reliability of 12 genes was verified by quantitative RT-PCR.A comprehensive analysis of the KEGG signaling pathway and PPI revealed that ocean acidification leads to abnormalities in lipid metabolism in S.esculenta larvae, which can lead to cancer development and metastasis, accompanied by some degree of inflammation. The results of the study will help to further investigate the physiological processes of S.esculenta when stimulated by ocean acidification, and provide a reference to cope with the captive breeding of S.esculenta affected by acidification.

文摘Ocean acidification(OA),caused by the rising concentration of atmospheric CO_(2),leads to changes in the marine carbonate system. This,in turn, affects the physiological processes of phytoplankton. In response to increased pCO_(2) levels, marine microalgae modulate their physiological responses to meet their energy and metabolic requirements.Nitrogen metabolism is a critical metabolic pathway, directly affecting the growth and reproductive capacity of marine microorganisms.Understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate nitrogen metabolism in microalgae under OA conditions is therefore crucial. This study aimed to investi-gate how OA affects the expression profiles of key genes in the nitrogen metabolic pathway of the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum. Our findings indicate that OA upregulates key genes involved in the nitrogen metabolic pathway, specifically those related to nitrate assimilation and glutamate metabolism.Moreover,pCO_(2) has been identified as the predominant factor affecting the expression of these genes, with a more significant impact than pH variations in S.costatum.This research not only advances our understanding of the adaptive mechanisms of S.costatum in response to OA but also provides essential data for predicting the ecological consequences of OA on marine diatoms.

文摘Soil acidifications become one of the main causes restricting the sustainable development of agriculture and causing issues of agricultural product safety. In order to explore the effect of different acidification on soil cadmium(Cd)availability, soil pot culture and hydroponic(soil potting solution extraction)were applied, and non-invasive micro-test technique(NMT)was combined. Here three different soil acidification processes were simulated, including direct acidification by adding sulfuric acid(AP1),acid rain acidification(AP2)by adding artificial simulated acid rain and excessive fertilization acidification by adding(NH_(4))_(2)SO_(4)(AP3).The results showed that for direct acidification(AP1),DTPA-Cd concentration in field soils in Liaoning(S1)and Zhejiang(S2)increased by 0.167-0.217 mg/kg and 0.181-0.346 mg/kg,respectively,compared with control group. When soil pH decreased by 0.45 units in S1,the Cd content of rice stems, leaves and roots increased by 0.48 to 6.04 mg/kg and 2.58 to 12.84mg/kg,respectively,When the pH value of soil S1 and S2 decreased by 0.20 units, the average velocity of Cd^(2+)at 200μm increased by 10.03-33.11 pmol/cm~2/sec and 21.33-52.86pmol/cm^(2)/sec,respectively,and followed the order of AP3>AP2>AP1.In summary, different acidification measures would improve the effectiveness of Cd,under the same pH reduction condition, fertilization acidification increased Cd availability most significantly.

文摘Background:Soil acidifcationn caused by anthropogenic activities may aft soil biochemical cydling, bidiversity, productivity, and multiple eosystem-related functions in drylands. However,to date, such information is lacking to support this hypothesis. Methods Based on a transect survey of 78 naturally assembled shrub communities,we caloulated acid deposition flux in Northwest China and evaluated its likely ecological ffets by testing three altemnative hypotheses, namely:.nidche complementarity, mass ratio, and vegetation quantity hypotheses Rao's quadratic entopy and community-weighted mean traits were employed to represent the complementary aspect of niche complementarity and mass ratio effects, respectively.Resulbs:We observed that in the past four decades, the concentrations of exchangeable base cations in soil in Northwest China have decreased significantly to the extent of having faced the risk of depletion, whereas changes in the calium carbonate content and pH of soil were not significant.Adid deposition primani ly increased the aboweground biomass and shrub density in shrublands but had no sigmificant effect on shrub richness and ecasystem multifunctionality(EMF),indicating that acid deposition had positive but weak ecological effects on dryland ecosystems.Community wd ghted mean of functional traits(representing the mass ratio hypothesis)correlated negatively with EMF,whereas both Rao's quadratic entropy(representing the niche complementarity hypothesis)and aboveground biomass(representing the vegetation quantity hypothesis)correlated positively but insignifcantly with EMF.These biodiversity-EMF relationships highlight the fragility and instability of drylands relative to forest ecasystems.Concuions:The findings from this study serve as important reference points to understand the ris of soil acidification in arid regions and its impacts on biodiversity-EMF relationships.

文摘Artificial CO_(2)removal from the atmosphere(also referred to as negative CO_(2)emissions)has been proposed as a potential means to counteract anthropogenic climate change. Here we use an Earth system model to examine the response of ocean acidification to idealized atmospheric CO_(2)removal scenarios. In our simulations, atmospheric CO_(2)is assumed to increase at a rate of 1%per year to four times its pre-industrial value and then decreases to the pre-industrial level at a rate of 0.5%,1%,2%per year, respectively. Our results show that the annual mean state of surface ocean carbonate chemistry fields including hydrogen ion concentration([H^(+)]),pH and aragonite saturation state respond quickly to removal of atmospheric CO_(2).However,the change of seasonal cycle in carbonate chemistry lags behind the decline in atmospheric CO_(2).When CO_(2)returns to the pre-industrial level, over some parts of the ocean, relative to the pre-industrial state, the seasonal amplitude of carbonate chemistry fields is substantially larger.Simulation results also show that changes in deep ocean carbonate chemistry substantially lag behind atmospheric CO_(2)change.When CO_(2)returns to its pre-industrial value, the whole-ocean acidity measured by[H^(+)]is 15%-18%larger than the pre-industrial level, depending on the rate of CO_(2)decrease.Our study demonstrates that even if atmospheric CO_(2)can be lowered in the future as a result of net negative CO_(2)emissions,the recovery of some aspects of ocean acidification would take decades to centuries, which would have important implications for the resilience of marine ecosystems.
文摘Over recent decades, Gampaha district, Sri Lanka, has experienced significant urbanisation and industrial growth, increasing groundwater demand due to limited and polluted surface water resources. It is recommended that similar water-rock interaction conditions may be present throughout the wet zone of Sri Lanka, warranting detailed studies to confirm this hypothesis.
文摘This study aims to evaluate the development of soil reaction values in 15 key localities of soil Partial Monitoring System from 1994 to 2023, and to identify the most important regional drivers of pH value development. The pH value in topsoil is primarily controlled by soil type and soil substrate, soil management and land use, and to a lesser extent by climatic region.

文摘Based on soil monitoring data in nine sites of Jinhu, Xuyi and Hongze counties on the south bank of Hongze Lake from 1982 to 2013, changes in soil p H, total nitrogen(TN) content, available phosphorus content, organic matter(OM)content and cation exchange capacity(CEC) were analyzed. Therefore, application of calcium, potassium and trace-element fertilizer should be paid more attention to during agricultural production in future.

文摘The mechanisms for the effects of ammonium-based fertilizers on soil acidification in subtropical regions are not well understood. Addition of urea stimulated the increase in the AOB population and thus accelerated nitrification and soil acidification; while addition of (NH4)2SO4 inhibited the increase in the AOB population and thus inhibited nitrification.

文摘Oceanic uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide results in a decrease in seawater pH, a process known as "ocean acidification". Further studies are needed to demonstrate the exact mechanisms for this effect and evaluateadaptability of these bivalves to future acidified oceans.

文摘We studied the effect of pH (pH 5, 6, 7 and 8) on the hatching percentage, survival and reproduction of Artemia strains in Bohai Bay salt ponds. Inoculation of Artemia with either local parthenogenetic Artemia or exotic A. franeiscana should be feasible at pH 7-8.

文摘Microwave heating contributes to coal fracturing and gas desorption. This study demonstrates the potential of microwave-assisted acidification for coalbed methane recovery.

文摘General pretreatment processes of ammonia stripping and phenols solvent extraction can reduce the concentration of toxic compounds of the coal gasification wastewater for the following biological treatment. Small amount low-cost solid additives including kaolin and diatomite can improve the rate of coal tar sedimentation and enhance the removal efficiency of organics in the phosphoric acidification process.
