This study investigated the differences between children with and without learning difficulties(LD)regarding academic performance(AP)and sleep quality(SLQ).A total of 1,501 children were evaluated, including 810 with LD and 691 without LD.The results indicated that children with LD scored significantly lower in AP and had poorer sleep quality, with greater variability in SLQ patterns.Correlation analysis revealed a significant negative association between sleep quality and academic performance(r=-0.646;p<0.01),indicating that poorer sleep quality is related to lower academic performance. These findings underscore the importance of interventions focused on promoting sleep hygiene and consistent routines to mitigate the negative impacts of learning difficulties.Study limitations include the absence of mediating variables, such as screen time and mental health, suggesting the need for future research exploring longitudinal interventions and associated factors. 展开更多

Background: The study’s primary research suggests the relationship between high-school international students in China’s sleep quality and learning efficiency which is academic performance. Considering the effect of Chinese traditional cultural background, this study mainly investigates Chinese international high school students’ sleeping quality and patterns through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Methods: A sample of 249 Chinese high school students in the Pearl River Region completed the questionnaire about their sleep quality using PSQI, their academic performance, and socio-demographic factors one month before the final exam in July 2023. Results: None of the students have good sleep quality, according to the PSQI;40.8% of students have poor sleep quality, and 59.2% have significant sleep disturbance. The results of ordinal logistic regression show that good sleep quality is positively associated with good academic performance. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the association between sleep and academic performance on the unique sleep patterns of Chinese international high school students, who often follow very different sleep patterns from other conventional students enrolled in the regular curriculum. High school students suffer from severe sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality. Under great academic stress, Chinese high school students should know the importance of sleep, balance sleep, and study. 展开更多

Introduction: The impact of sleep on student life is crucial, particularly for those in demanding fields such as medicine. This study examines the relationships between sleep patterns, academic performance, and social integration among medical students, who often face irregular sleep cycles and sleep deprivation due to rigorous academic demands. Aim: This study aims to assess how sleep issues affect academic achievement and social relationships among medical students. Method: Data were collected from 215 medical students through surveys and academic records. Quantitative data provided insights into sleep quality and academic performance, while qualitative interviews explored the effects of sleep on social interactions. Results: The findings revealed a significant correlation between sleep quality and academic performance, with students reporting better sleep hygiene achieving higher grades. Qualitative data indicated that poor sleep negatively impacts social interactions, leading to feelings of isolation and reduced social participation. Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of promoting good sleep practices in medical schools to enhance academic success and social well-being. Interventions aimed at improving sleep quality may help reduce burnout and improve overall well-being among medical students. However, migration does not come without costs. The potential impacts of parental migration on the left-behind children have aroused wide concerns. Based on a two-wave panel dataset of nearly 10 thousand students in 166 schools from 13 counties in 5 provinces between 2014 and 2015, differences-in-differences (DID) and propensity score matching plus DID (PSMDID) approaches were used to examine the changes in academic performances before and after the parental out-migration. The results indicated that the mother only migration has a significant negative impact on the a- cademic performances of left-behind children, and it was especially true when the mother only migration lasted more than a semester. For left-behind children whose parents were out or only the father was out, their academic performances were not affected. 展开更多

This multivariate study investigated whether Parental Support, Teacher Support, and Academic Motivation mediate the relationship between Parental Status (i.e., children from single or both parents homes) and Academic Performance, The research design used for the study was a cross sectional survey using the quantitative approach. Data set from 250 primary school pupils from the Effutu Municipality were analysed using partial correlation and multiple regression analytical techniques. Among the study findings, that were when the effects of Parental Status were controlled for, Parental Support, Teacher Support, and Academic Motivation still related significantly to Academic Performance. Among the conclusions of the findings are that, whether the child was from a single or both parent home was not important with regard to his or her academic performance but rather it was the quality of support that the child gets from whoever is doing the parenting, teacher support and the child's own academic motivation that were important to determine the child's Academic Performance. The study also found that Parental Support was the best predictor of the pupils' Academic Performance out of the three factors includingTeacher Support and Academic Motivation. 展开更多

BACKGROUND:Similar to handedness, hand clasping and arm folding are also lateral preferences. Previous studies showed a variation frequency for hand clasping and arm folding among different populations. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between patterns of lateral preferences (hand clasping or arm folding) and academic performance of middle school students. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTINGS: Cross-sectional investigation. The data were collected in the Beijing Zhongguancun High School in Beijing in May 2007. Data analysis was performed in the State Key Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience and Learning, Beijing Normal University during June to July 2007. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 102 senior-grade students from Beijing Zhongguancun High School, including 58 males and 44 females, were selected for this study. METHODS: Different forms of hand clasping and arm folding were recorded. More specifically, hand clasping was either right-thumb-top or left-thumb-top, and arm folding was either right-arm-top or left-arm-top. Students with congruent preference used right-thumb-top-right-arm-top or left-thumb-top-left-arm-top, and incongruent preference was displayed by right-thumb-top-left-arm-top or left-thumb-top-right-arm-top. Academic performances were collected from midterm exams in six subjects (Chinese, Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), with a total points = 100 for each. A three-way (hand clasping, arm folding, and sex) ANOVA was performed to determine the effect on academic performances. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The relationship between hand clasping, arm folding, sex, and academic performance of students. RESULTS: (1) There was no significant difference in distribution frequency between right-thumb-top and left-thumb-top (P 〉 0.05), or between right-arm-top and left-arm-top (P 〉 0.05). The distribution frequency difference between boys and girls was not significant for any subtype (P 〉 0.05). (2) hand clasping had no significant main effect on any of the six subjects (P 〉 0.05). The right-arm-top students received significantly higher points in Chinese, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, compared with the left-arm-top students (P 〈 0.05). A significant sexual difference was detected in academic performance in Chinese and English; girls had higher scores than the boys (P 〈 0.05). The students with congruent preference scored higher in English, compared with those with incongruent preference (P 〈 0.05). CONCLUSION: The arm folding form of lateral preference had a significant effect on academic performance of middle school students, implying that this human laterality index is of great functional importance. 展开更多
