Manipulation of intercropping systems to improve weed management in coffee in...Weed incidence and biomass in tree crop plantations are mainly influenced by environmental, farm management practices and cropping systems. Manipulation of intercropping systems to improve weed management in coffee intercropped with oil palm requires a better understanding of spatial and temporal dynamics of weeds. To evaluate the effect of weed incidence and biomass in coffee intercropped with oil palm in avenue and hollow square arrangement, a study was carried out in Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) in two locations. The locations are Idi-Ayunre (7°25'N, 3°24'E) (an alfisol) and Uhonmora (6°5'N, 5°50'E) (ultisol) in rainforest and derived savannah parts of Nigeria respectively. The experiment had three treatments comprising coffee sole (control), coffee with oil palm (Hollow square) arrangement and coffee with oil palm (Avenue) planting. Coffee was planted 3.0 m apart while oil palm was planted 9 m apart. Equal size of land area was used for coffee in each treatment. The experimental design was Randomized Complete Block (RCBD) with three replicates. Data on vegetative growth of coffee, weed incidence and biomass were taken at three-monthly intervals. The result showed that coffee/oil palm (Hollow Square) had the least weed incidence and biomass closely followed by coffee/oil palm (Avenue) planting. The control had the highest weed biomass which was significantly different from Hollow square and Avenue planting at P ≤ 0.05. The morphological parameters on coffee followed the same pattern but Hollow square arrangement was significantly higher than Avenue and control at P ≤ 0.05.展开更多
Life began millions of years ago on our planet,where mercury(Hg)occurred naturally in the air,soil,and water.In the thousands of years of human civilization,the anthropogenic emission of Hgwas also clearly recorded in...Life began millions of years ago on our planet,where mercury(Hg)occurred naturally in the air,soil,and water.In the thousands of years of human civilization,the anthropogenic emission of Hgwas also clearly recorded in historical archives,mostly derived from gold/silver refining and coal combustion.However,the ecological and health risks of this ubiquitous element were commonly recognized as late as the 20th century.It has been 110 years since the first retrievable paper of Hg in“Environmental Sciences Ecology”was published in 1912,based on the search on Web of Science.The cycling and risk of Hg has been comprehensively understood and emphasized,particularly after the outbreak of the Minamata disease in the 1950s.Despite those previous efforts and advances in understanding the behavior of this toxic element in various environmental media and its flux through food chains,it is still far from clear how Hg makes its way from the ambient environment to the human body.展开更多
Throughout 3000 years ago, over the New Kingdom in the Pharaonic period, the Ram-headed Sphinxes Avenue connected Karnak and the Temples of Luxor, a processional avenue was lined on both sides by 1200 statues of sphin...Throughout 3000 years ago, over the New Kingdom in the Pharaonic period, the Ram-headed Sphinxes Avenue connected Karnak and the Temples of Luxor, a processional avenue was lined on both sides by 1200 statues of sphinxes. The lining of the avenue was erased. Centuries over centuries this avenue has been buried with its statues under about 2 m of silt and sand, and urban development covered it with housing, asphaltic streets, and other structures, obscuring its route and interrupting this dramatic connection. This paper focuses on the discovery of some of these Sphinx statuses and remains at a suggested part of the avenue using both near-surface magnetic and shallow seismic refraction methods. A gradiometer survey was conducted in an area that amounted 576 m2 as (48 m?× 12 m) to measure the vertical magnetic gradient with a high resolution instrument with 0.25 m sampling interval. A superior detection was accomplished by using the analytic signal and Euler deconvolution techniques. The shallow seismic refraction survey was done in the same area to illustrate the lithology of layers material with 1 m interval;both P and S waves were measured to calculate the geotechnical properties of the area to sustain the sketch of structures’ boundaries. We have lucratively detected six main structures;they can be the pedestal of these Ram-headed Sphinx statues. Mining a small part of the study area has proven the reliability of, both the magnetic and shallow seismic refraction discoveries, and the shallowness and composition of the detected features.展开更多
