Construction of the sea surface wind field of Typhoon Chaba based on wind field model and CMEMS data

Typhoon Chaba was the most intense typhoon to strike western Guangdong since Typhoon Mujigae in 2015.According to the National Disaster Reduction Center of China,in the morning of July 7,2022,over 1.5 million people in Guangdong,Guangxi,and Hainan were affected by Typhoon Chaba.The typhoon also caused the“Fukui 001”ship to be in distress in the waters near Yangjiang,Guangdong,on July 2,resulting in big casualties.Studies have indicated that wind field forecast for Typhoon Chaba was not accurate.To better simulate typhoon events and assess their impacts,we proposed the use of a model wind field(Fujita-Takahashi)integrated with the Copernicus Marine and Environmental Monitoring Service(CMEMS)data to reconstruct effectively the overall wind field of Typhoon Chaba.The simulation result aligns well with the observations,particularly at the Dashu Island Station,showing consistent trends in wind speed changes.However,certain limitations were noted.The model shows that the attenuation of wind speed is slower when typhoon neared land than that observed,indicating that the model has a high simulation accuracy for the ocean wind field,but may have deviations near coastal areas.The result is accurate for open sea but deviated for near land due to the land friction effect.Therefore,we recommend to adjust the model to improve the accuracy for near coasts. 展开更多

This study employed a computational fluid dynamics model with an overset mesh technique to investigate the thrust and power of a floating offshore wind turbine(FOWT)under platform floating motion in the wind–rain field.The impact of rainfall on aerodynamic performance was initially examined using a stationary turbine model in both wind and wind–rain conditions.Subsequently,the study compared the FOWT’s performance under various single degree-of-freedom(DOF)motions,including surge,pitch,heave,and yaw.Finally,the combined effects of wind–rain fields and platform motions involving two DOFs on the FOWT’s aerodynamics were analyzed and compared.The results demonstrate that rain negatively impacts the aerodynamic performance of both the stationary turbines and FOWTs.Pitch-dominated motions,whether involving single or multiple DOFs,caused significant fluctuations in the FOWT aerodynamics.The combination of surge and pitch motions created the most challenging operational environment for the FOWT in all tested scenarios.These findings highlighted the need for stronger construction materials and greater ultimate bearing capacity for FOWTs,as well as the importance of optimizing designs to mitigate excessive pitch and surge. 展开更多

Skillful bias correction of offshore near-surface wind field forecasting based on a multi-task machine learning model

Accurate short-term forecast of offshore wind fields is still challenging for numerical weather prediction models.Based on three years of 48-hour forecast data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Integrated Forecasting System global model(ECMWF-IFS)over 14 offshore weather stations along the coast of Shandong Province,this study introduces a multi-task learning(MTL)model(TabNet-MTL),which significantly improves the forecast bias of near-surface wind direction and speed simultaneously.TabNet-MTL adopts the feature engineering method,utilizes mean square error as the loss function,and employs the 5-fold cross validation method to ensure the generalization ability of the trained model.It demonstrates superior skills in wind field correction across different forecast lead times over all stations compared to its single-task version(TabNet-STL)and three other popular single-task learning models(Random Forest,LightGBM,and XGBoost).Results show that it significantly reduces root mean square error of the ECMWF-IFS wind speed forecast from 2.20 to 1.25 m s−1,and increases the forecast accuracy of wind direction from 50%to 65%.As an explainable deep learning model,the weather stations and long-term temporal statistics of near-surface wind speed are identified as the most influential variables for TabNet-MTL in constructing its feature engineering. 展开更多

Proper knowledge of the nature of geomagnetic storms and their relationships with the conditions of the space environment at the outer part of the Earth's magnetosphere(bow shock nose) is essential to increase our resilience to space weather disturbances. In this article, we present an analysis of the interplanetary magnetic field(IMF) and solar wind parameters relevant to 100 geomagnetic storms in Solar Cycle 24. We revisit the relationship between the minimum disturbance storm time index(Dst_(min)), the minimum southward IMF(B_(S, min)), the maximum solar wind density(N_(SW, max)) and speed(V_(max)), and the lag time between the extrema(dT(B_(z), N),dT(B_(z), V)). We end with a regression formula that fits the data, with a coefficient of determination of 0.58, a root mean square error of 21.30 nT, and a mean absolute error of 15.87 nT. Even though more complex machine learning models can outperform this model, it serves as a theoretically sensible alternative for understanding and forecasting geomagnetic storms. 展开更多

Stratospheric airships are lighter-than-air vehicles capable of continuous flying for months.The energy balance of the airship is the key to long-duration flights.The stratospheric airship is entirely powered by the solar array.It is necessary to accurately predict the output power of the array for any flight state.Because of the uneven solar radiation received by the solar array,the traditional model based on components has a slow simulation speed.In this study,a data-driven surrogate modeling approach for prediction the output power of the solar array is proposed.The surrogate model is trained using the samples obtained from the high-accuracy simulation model.By using the input parameter preprocessor,the accuracy of the surrogate model in predicting the output power of the solar array is improved to 98.65%.In addition,the predictive speed of the surrogate model is ten million times faster than the traditional simulation model.Finally,the surrogate model is used to predict the energy balance of stratospheric airships flying throughout the year under actual global wind fields. 展开更多

The strong wind characteristics of the Runyang Suspension Bridge( RSB) including the wind speed and direction, the turbulence intensity, the turbulence integral length and power spectrum are analyzed based on measurement data from the wind environment monitoring subsystem of the structural health monitoring system (SHMS)of the RSB and field tests during strong winds. The differences between the typhoon and the strong northern wind are especially studied. It is found that the mean wind speed of the strong northern wind is a little smaller and the mean wind direction is more stable than that of the typhoon. The turbulence intensity of both the typhoon and the strong northern wind is greater than the values suggested in Chinese code, and the turbulence integral length difference between the typhoon and a strong northern wind is not clear. As for the along-wind turbulence power spectrum, the spectrum of the strong northern wind can fit the Kaimal spectrum better than that of the typhoon. The obtained results can provide measurement data for founding a strong wind characteristic database and determining the strong wind characteristic parameter values of the RSB. 展开更多

In order to provide a reliable basis for wind resistant evaluation of a long-span suspension bridge, a structural health monitoring system is installed on a bridge in the East China Sea and the simultaneous wind data at the bridge deck and at the top of the bridge tower are recorded. The average wind speeds and directions, variations of wind speeds with height, turbulent characteristics, spatial correlation and characteristics of wind flow around the bridge deck are analyzed by using statistical methods and spectral analysis. It is found that the average wind speeds along the bridge girder are almost identical; however, the mean wind directions vary greatly at different locations. The dimensionless exponent decreases as the average wind speed increases. The measured turbulence intensities are greater than the recommended values, and the turbulence power spectrum can well fit the standard spectrum. However, the measured spectral values are considerably smaller in low frequency ranges. The mean wind speed of the wake flow decreases and the turbulence intensity increases significantly, and the spectral characteristics of the wake flow change obviously while the feature frequency of vortex shedding has not yet been observed. 展开更多

This paper presents a study on the improvement of wind field hindcasts for two typical tropical cyclones, i.e., Fanapi and Meranti, which occurred in 2010. The performance of the three existing models for the hindcasting of cyclone wind fields is first examined, and then two modification methods are proposed to improve the hindcasted results. The first one is the superposition method, which superposes the wind field calculated from the parametric cyclone model on that obtained from the cross-calibrated multi-platform (CCMP) reanalysis data. The radius used for the superposition is based on an analysis of the minimum difference between the two wind fields. The other one is the direct modification method, which directly modifies the CCMP reanalysis data according to the ratio of the measured maximum wind speed to the reanalyzed value as well as the distance from the cyclone center. Using these two methods, the problem of underestimation of strong winds in reanalysis data can be overcome. Both methods show considerable improvements in the hindcasting of tropical cyclone wind fields, compared with the cyclone wind model and the reanalysis data. 展开更多

Cylindrical Al-Zn-Mg alloys were processed by electroplastic compression with forced air cooling.Compared to a simple compression process,an unequal intensity of {110} <111> was obtained,and other textures were eliminated by electroplastic compression,that is,electroplastic compression can promote a uniform texture.The various textures formed in different regions along the radial direction under a simple compression process were illuminated by analyzing the relationship between the crystal rotation and stress state.Furthermore,the interaction between the electrons and dislocations was studied in electroplastic compression.The electrons enhanced {110} <111> by promoting slipping of the dislocations when the Burgers vectors of the dislocations were parallel to the drift direction of the electrons.However,the electrons also inhibited crystal rotation by pinning the dislocations with the Burgers vectors perpendicular to the drift direction of the electrons.Therefore,textures other than {110} <111>have difficulty forming under electroplastic compression.The effect of the current energy on the texture(enhancement or attenuation) was in accordance with the law of conservation.The results provided reasonable explanations for the test phenomena. 展开更多

In this paper, coherency matrix-based proper orthogonal decomposition (CPOD) is presented as an innovative form of the POD based on cross power spectral density matrices. By introducing a discretizing scheme, the CPOD-based spectral representation method is obtained for use in stochastic simulation. Moreover, some criteria are proposed that allow the truncation order of CPOD to be conveniently determined. This area is typical monsoon area. In the period of monsoon, the directions of wind, sea wave and swell are roughly consistent. Sea wave of northeasterly is always prevailing in equatorial zone. The monsoon in winter is stronger than in summer, correspondingly, average wave height is higher, and the frequencies of high sea and heavy swell are also bigger. Both of North Indian Ocean and adjacent sea area is also monsoon area, but characteristic is opposite. Rain cells or convective rain,the dominant form of rain in the tropics and subtropics,can be easy detected by satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) images with high horizontal resolution.The footprints of rain cells on SAR images are caused by the scattering and attenuation of the rain drops,as well as the downward airflow.In this study,we extract sea surface wind field and its structure caused by rain cells by using a RADARSAT-2 SAR image with a spatial resolution of 100 m for case study.We extract the sea surface wind speeds from SAR image by using CMOD4 geophysical model function with outside wind directions of NCEP final operational global analysis data,Advance Scatterometer(ASCAT) onboard European Met Op-A satellite and microwave scatterometer onboard Chinese HY-2 satellite,respectively.The root-mean-square errors(RMSE) of these SAR wind speeds,validated against NCEP,ASCAT and HY-2,are 1.48 m/s,1.64 m/s and 2.14 m/s,respectively.Circular signature patterns with brighter on one side and darker on the opposite side on SAR image are interpreted as the sea surface wind speed(or sea surface roughness) variety caused by downdraft associated with rain cells.The wind speeds taken from the transect profile which superposes to the wind ambient vectors and goes through the center of the circular footprint of rain cell can be fitted as a cosine or sine curve in high linear correlation with the values of no less than 0.80.The background wind speed,the wind speed caused by rain cell and the diameter of footprint of the rain cell with kilometers or tens of kilometers can be acquired by fitting curve.Eight cases interpreted and analyzed in this study all show the same conclusion. 展开更多

Field measurement of strong wind characteristics is of great significance for the development of bridge wind engineering. Located in east China, the Runyang Suspension Bridge (RSB) with a main span of 1490 m is the longest bridge in China and the third longest in the world. During the last four years, the RSB has suffered from typhoons and strong northern winds on more than ten occasions. To determine the strong wind characteristics of the RSB, wind measurement data obtained from field tests during strong winds and data from the wind environment monitoring subsystem of the structural health monitoring system (SHMS) of the RSB were combined to analyze the wind speed and direction, variation in wind speed with height, turbulence intensity, turbulence integral length, wind friction speed and the power spectrum. Comparative studies on the characteristics of these different strong winds were carried out based on the current wind-resistant design specification for highway bridges. Results showed that some regularity in wind characteristics can be found in these different typhoons passing through the RSB. The difference between a strong northern wind and a typhoon is relatively clear, and in summer the typhoon is the dominant wind load acting on the RSB. In addition, there were some differences between the measured strong wind characteristics and the values suggested by the specification, especially in respect to turbulence intensity and turbulence integral length. Results provide measurement data for establishing a strong wind characteristic database for the RSB and for determining the strong wind characteristic parameter values of this coastal area in east China. 展开更多

Chemical spills on complex geometry are difficult to model due to the uneven concentration distribution caused by air flow over ground obstacles. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) is one of the powerful tools to estimate the building-resolving wind flow as well as pollutant dispersion. However, it takes too much time and requires enormous computational power in emergency situations. As a time demanding task, the estimation of the chemical spill consequence for emergency response requires abundant wind field information. In this paper, a comprehensive wind field reconstruction framework is proposed, providing the ability of parameter tuning for best reconstruction accuracy. The core of the framework is a data regression model built on principal component analysis(PCA) and extreme learning machine(ELM). To improve the accuracy, the wind field estimation from the regression model is further revised from local wind observations. The optimal placement of anemometers is provided based on the maximum projection on minimum eigenspace(MPME) algorithm. The fire dynamic simulator(FDS) generates high-resolution data of wind flow over complex geometries for the framework to be implemented. The reconstructed wind field is evaluated against simulation data and an overall reconstruction error of 9% is achieved. When used in real case,the error increases to around 12% since no convergence check is available. With parameter tuning abilities,the proposed framework provides an efficient way of reconstructing the wind flow in congested areas. 展开更多

The methods employed in recent years to retrieve vector wind information from single-Doppler radar observation are reviewed briefly. These methods are based on a linearity hypothesis for the wind field, so the retrieved wind field is sometimes negatively affected by the non-linearity of wind. This paper proposes a new method based on a non-linear approximation technique. This method, which relies on the piecewise smooth property of the wind field and makes full use of the radar velocity data, is applied to two cases of the Huaihe River Basin Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (HUBEX) in 1998. Checked against the wind field observed by dual-Doppler radar, the retrieved wind field by the method presented in this paper yields a relatively accurate horizontal vector wind field with high resolution, as well as a reasonable estimate of the magnitude of vertical velocity. 展开更多

Based on the field measurement results, this paper presents the natural wind characteristics of typhoons and strong monsoons at the site of Xi-hou-men Bridge, including mean wind speed, mean wind direction, mean wind elevation angle, turbulent intensity, gust factor, turbulence integral length scales, power spectrum of wind speed and spatial correlation of gusty wind, the profiles of mean wind speed and turbulent intensity, etc. The correlation among wind characteristics is analyzed in detail, and the similarities and differences of wind characteristics between typhoons and monsoons are analyzed. These results can pro- vide detailed wind characteristics of coastal areas of China. 展开更多

An identical turbine system was also installed at the adjacent waterfront. The separation of the two turbines was 3.7 km. Wind flow tends to be more stable and the average wind speed is often larger in offshore areas than adjacent land areas at typical wind turbine hub height. This study focused on the wind condition of a nearshore area to clarify the advantages of nearshore wind farming. Prior to field experiment, wind conditions were predicted by using numerical simulation. It is useful for estimating topographical effect in nearshore areas. Next, field verification test was done by directly comparing wind data obtained from the identical wind turbine systems installed at an offshore location and the adjacent waterfront over the same extended period. The corresponding power output of these turbines was also compared. The data set exhibits 23% larger annual average wind speed at the offshore location and smaller turbulent intensity, resulting doubled annual power production. 展开更多

Wind field simulation in the surface layer is often used to manage natural resources in terms of air quality,gene flow(through pollen drift),and plant disease transmission(spore dispersion).Although Lagrangian stochastic(LS)models describe stochastic wind behaviors,such models assume that wind velocities follow Gaussian distributions.However,measured surface-layer wind velocities show a strong skewness and kurtosis.This paper presents an improved model,a non-Gaussian LS model,which incorporates controllable non-Gaussian random variables to simulate the targeted non-Gaussian velocity distribution with more accurate skewness and kurtosis.Wind velocity statistics generated by the non-Gaussian model are evaluated by using the field data from the Cooperative Atmospheric Surface Exchange Study,October 1999 experimental dataset and comparing the data with statistics from the original Gaussian model.Results show that the non-Gaussian model improves the wind trajectory simulation by stably producing precise skewness and kurtosis in simulated wind velocities without sacrificing other features of the traditional Gaussian LS model,such as the accuracy in the mean and variance of simulated velocities.This improvement also leads to better accuracy in friction velocity(i.e.,a coupling of three-dimensional velocities).The model can also accommodate various non-Gaussian wind fields and a wide range of skewness–kurtosis combinations.Moreover,improved skewness and kurtosis in the simulated velocity will result in a significantly different dispersion for wind/particle simulations.Thus,the non-Gaussian model is worth applying to wind field simulation in the surface layer. 展开更多

Simulation for stochastic wind field is very important in analyzing dynamic responses of large complex structures due to strong wind.The typical simulation method is the spectrum representation method (SRM),but the SRM has drawbacks of inferior precision in lower frequency and slow calculating speed.In view of this,the modified Fourier spectrum method (MFSM) is introduced into the simulation of stochastic wind field in this paper.In this method,phase information of wind velocity time history is determined by cross power spectral density (CPSD) between adjacent points,and the wind velocity time history with time and space correlation is generated by iterative modification for CPSD considering auto power spectral density (APSD).Simulation of the wind field for a long-span bridge is undertaken to verify the effectiveness of the MFSM.Simulation results of the SRM and the MFSM are compared.It can be concluded that the MFSM is more accurate and has higher calculation speed than the SRM. 展开更多
