Anti-globalization trends are in play in the US and Western Europe where electorates are recalcitrant to allow immigrants into their societies, national sovereignty is sought in certain geographic areas, and the national mood seeks to suppress newly rising countries' trade and development. The continuation of economic downturn in Western countries is reinforced by their internal wealth gap and external competition. As capitalism's demand for profit is now being critiqued along with the emergent profit prospects to be delivered by pending technological progress, the temper of the times could temporarily slow down but not reverse globalization. Timely discussions about reform of international economic order and about an effective national development model should seek sustainable solutions for healthy, stable globalization and development of the world economy. 展开更多

This paper uses Qian’s level-standard economy approach to analyze the losses and gains of American globalization in the Neoliberal Era.Analysis found that:level-standard economy’s sectors are the losers during the process of American globalization in the Neoliberal Era;and super levelstandard economy’s sectors are the winners during the process of American globalization in the Neoliberal Era.The erosion of the level-standard economy has great harm and impact on related parties,so that the USA emerges the movement of populist backlash against globalization. This paper proposes 4 measures to solve this dilemma,i.e.,to impose higher tax rates on the winners of American globalization in the Neoliberal Era,to subsidize more to the losers of American globalization in the Neoliberal Era,to moderately relocate manufacturing and other industries back to the U.S.,and to further strengthen transnational cooperation. 展开更多

Today, Central Asia continues to face many political, socio-economic and cultural changes brought about by the end of one ruling ideology, particularly in the field of education. With the loss of Soviet ideology that formed the basis of the curriculum and educational standards, transition and instability threatened to supplant one ideology for another, in the form of newly developed myths of nationalism on one end of the spectrum and fundamentalism or anti-globalism on the other. Thus, the task of educators working through this period of transition has been both arduous and complex. Humanities education of AKHP of UCA (Aga Khan Humanities Project of University of Central Asia) provides a key channel for training students and educators in independent critical thinking, tolerance of pluralism, and appreciation for the importance of diversity in Central Asian post-Soviet societies, playing a pivotal role in the promotion of these values. This paper argues that cultivating knowledge in the humanities can prevent development of extreme ideologies such as nationalism, fundamentalism and anti-globalization in the region following independence. The positive impacts of implementation of AKHP and its liberating role in the life of the Central Asian students show that development and adoption of an integrated interdisciplinary curriculum that incorporates cross-cultural and comparative studies can serve as a catalyst for reform of the broader education system and the region at large. 展开更多

This paper starts with the social and moral implications of wall in history and in the contemporary world,to usher in the early Confucian discourse on wall and gate. The Confucian discourse implies that walls一either actual, virtual or symbolic-are there to defend and/or to separate, while gates enable the managed access to and opening-up the self-imposed insularity or moderate the self-centred exclusiveness that walls imply.By way of reinterpretation and reconstruction,we will extract from a variety of Confucian discussions the ethical awareness that however strongly built, walls must be associated with gates, and that the wall and the gate are therefore locked in mutuality to make possible the reality of interconnectedness between the inside and the outside and between the self and the other. It will be argued that by using ethical virtues as tools to moderate separation and exclusiveness,Confucian discourses highlight the dynamics of the self-other relationship, and establishes an ethics that may well be still applicable to contemporary situations and can be drawn upon to help dissolve the tension between the values of populist self-centrism and those of globalist interconnectedness. 展开更多

The experience and lessons from the century and the experience of successful development of market economy since the 19th socialism with Chinese characteristics show that the free development of the market needs corresponding governance to match up with it, or the other way round it will inevitably enlarge the negative influence of the market and lead to the intensification of social contradictions. In order to promote the healthy development of economic globalization, it is necessary to adjust the previous neoliberal order and establish a new global governance model, for the old order is oriented towards complete marketization, privatization and Westernized political system in terms of governance. This model is the crux of many problems in the current economic globalization. For this reason, the new global governance should be based on the following consensus: The balance between the market and the state recognizes a diversified national governance mode, but such pluralistic mode should be premised on win-win cooperation and mutual benefits, and boosting development provides a basis for guaranteeing the smooth development of current economic globalization. At present, it is urgent to find a global approach to the improvement of development to cope with the tmdercurrents of de- and anti-globalization. So, the author holds that on the basis of the "Belt and Road Initiative," the construction of global infrastructure should be used as a new growth point for promoting global economy. This solution can alleviate the difficulties of employment loss and weak growth in some developed countries in the West, improve the development capacity of developing countries, and meanwhile enhance the production capacity and capital exports of countries like China. 展开更多

After Liberal Global Democracy:New Methodology for New Praxis

Liberalism is in trouble as a normative basis of world order, partly for its failure to deliver adequate democracy to contemporary globalisation. This article explores how new ideas and practices of democracy might underpin a future post-liberal world order. The discussion especially addresses methodological issues,on the premise that the way that global democracy is studied deeply affects the ways that it can be understood and enacted. To open space for more innovative thinking about people's power in a global world, the article develops an approach which—in contrast to established liberal theorising-mphasises principles of diversity, reflexivity, and praxis.Drawing on experiences of implementing these principles in a six-year'Building Global Democracy' programme, the article argues that such a method-ology can generate different, imaginative and transformative notions. In particular,post-liberal reinventions of democracy could redefine the demos, incorporate non-modern institutions, deepen justice, and confront structural power hierarchies. To be sure,as the final section reflects, the formulation and implementation of post-liberal constructions of global democracy face considerable challenges.Yet,with no less than the future of a good society at stake,it is vital further to pursue such experiments in globality beyond liberalism. 展开更多
