With the development of ICESat-2, many elevation observations can be used to derive elevation changes. However, the large amount of multitemporal data may include anomalous data points, increasing the uncertainty of the results. In this work, we improved the traditional repeat track method by introducing the Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics Ⅲ(IGGⅢ) method to obtain high-accuracy estimates of elevation change. The improved method was applied to analyze elevation changes along the transect from Zhongshan Station to Dome A in East Antarctica via ICESat-2 satellite altimetry data. The results show that the improved and traditional methods yield consistent numerical and spatial elevation change distributions. The elevation change calculated via the traditional method is 0.033 ± 0.131 m/yr, whereas the elevation change estimated via the IGGⅢ robust estimation method is 0.033 ± 0.109 m/yr from March 2019 to December 2021.In terms of spatial distribution, elevation changes in inland areas remain close to equilibrium, whereas regions with steeper ice sheet margins exhibit positive accumulation trends in elevation changes. The improved method reduces the standard error of the adjustment function from 0.975 to 0.691 m/yr. The improvement is particularly remarkable in the area between 72°S and 77°S. The results demonstrate that the IGGⅢ method effectively reduces errors caused by the inclusion of anomalous data and maintains the high data utilization rate of repeat-orbit methods.展开更多

A geographical distribution and an eddy polarity, an eddy lifetime and propagation distances, eddy origins and terminations, eddy propagation directions and trajectories, eddy kinetic properties, the evolution of eddy properties, seasonal and interannual variabilities of eddy activities are analyzed in this area. Eddies exist principally in the western Bay of Bengal and most of them propagate westward. The polarity distribution of eddies shows cyclones prefer to occur in the northwest and south of the Bay of Bengal, while anticyclones mainly occur in the east of the bay. Five hundred and sixty-five cyclones and 389 anticyclones with the lifetime that exceeds 30 d are detected during the 22 a period, and there is a preference for the cyclones for all lifetime and propagation distances. The kinetic properties of all observed eddies show the average amplitude of the cyclones is larger than that of the anticyclones, whereas that is opposite for average radius, and their average velocities are basically the same. Moreover, the evolution of eddies properties reveals that the eddies with a long lifetime that exceeds 90 d have a significant double-stage feature of the former 50 d growth period and the dying period after 50 d. For the seasonal variability of the eddies, the cyclones occur more often in spring while the anticyclones occur more often in summer. The analysis of long-lived eddy seasonal distributions shows that there is the obvious seasonal variation of the eddy activities in the Bay of Bengal. The interannual variability of an eddy number shows an obvious negative correlation with the EKE variation.展开更多

The annual cycle, seasonal and inter-annual variations of the SCS surface circulation are identified through the evolution of the characteristic circulation patterns. The annual cycle of the SCS general circulation patterns is described as a change between two opposite basin-scale SW-NE oriented gyres embedded with eddies: low sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) (cyclonic) in winter and high SSHA (anticyclonic) in summer half year. The transition starts from July—August (January—February) with a high (low) SSHA tongue east of Vietnam around 12°~14° N, which develops into a big anticyclonic (cyclonic) gyre while moving eastward to the deep basin. During the transitions, a dipole structure, cyclonic (anticyclonic) in the north and anticyclonic (cyclonic) in the south, may be formed southeast off Vietnam with a strong zonal jet around 10°~12° N. The seasonal variation is modulated by the interannual variations. Besides the strong 1997/1998 event in response to the peak Pacific El Nio in 1997, the overall SCS sea level is found to have a significant rise during 1999~2001, however, in summer 2004 the overall SCS sea level is lower and the basin-wide anticyclonic gyre becomes weaker than the other years.展开更多

The intercomparison of the derived harmonics at 7000 subsatellite track crossover points shows that the root mean square (RMS) values of the tidal height differences of the above eight constituents range from 1.19 cm to 2.67 cm, with an average of about 2 cm. The RMS values of the tidal height differences between T/P-J solutions and the harmonics from ground measurements at 152 tidal gauge stations for the above constituents range from 0.34 cm to 1.08 cm, and the relative deviations range from 0.031 to 0.211. The root sum square of the RMS differences of these eight constituents is 2.12 cm, showing the improvement of the present model over the existing global ocean tidal models. Based on the obtained tidal model the global ocean tidal energetics is studied and the global distribution of the tidal power input density by tide-generating force of each constituent is calculated, showing that the power input source regions of semidiurnal tides are mainly concentrated in the tropical belt between 30S and 30N, while the power input source regions of diurnal tides are mainly concentrated off the tropic oceans. The global energy dissipation rates of the M2, S2, K1, O1, N2, P1, K2 and Q1 tides are 2.424, 0.401, 0.334, 0.160, 0.113, 0.035, 0.030 and 0.006 TW, respectively. The total global tidal dissipation rate of these eight constituents amounts to 3.5 TW.展开更多

In this paper, the terrestrial water storage variations in the Poyang Lake Basin are recovered from the GRACE gravity data from January 2003 to March 2014 and compared with the Global Land Data Assimilation System(GLDAS) hydrological models and satellite altimetry. Furthermore, the impact of soil moisture content from GLDAS and rainfall from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM) on TWS variations are investigated. Our results indicate that the TWS variations from GRACE, GLDAS and satellite altimetry have a general consistency. The TWS trends in the Poyang Lake Basin determined from GRACE, GLDAS and satellite altimetry are increasing at 0.0141 km^(3)/a, 0.0328 km^(3)/a and 0.0238 km^(3)/a,respectively during the investigated time period. The TWS is governed mainly by the soil moisture content and dominated primarily by the precipitation but also modulated by the flood season of the Yangtze River as well as the lake and river exchange water.展开更多

Tidal solutions with resolution of 1°/3 in longitude and latitude were obtained for constituents M 2, S 2, O 1, K 1, M 4 and MS 4. The mean sea heights above the reference ellipsoid were also obtained consequently. The obtained tidal constants were compared with those from deep sea and island tide gauge data. The rms differences between the harmonic constants derived from Geosat altimetry and deep sea tide gauges for M 2, S 2, O 1 and K 1 ranged from 1.4 cm to 2.6 cm, although the GM altimeter data have significant errors due to instrument malfunction and other reasons. M 2 tide obtained was the most accurate one among all the tides. Comparison also showed that island tidal constants cannot represent well the tidal distribution in the ocean near the island, because of the significant local effect on tides.展开更多

But most of the researches have been only on global scale or in oceans deeper than 2000 m In shallow shelf waters this method is hampered by the inaccuracy of ocean tide data supplied with Geosat Geophysical Data Records (GDRs). This work uses a modified collinear analysis technique characterized by simultaneous separation of mean sea level and ocean tide with the least squares method, to compute sea surface variability in the Northwest Pacific Ocean and eastern China Seas. The mean sea level map obtained contains not only bathymetric but also dynamic features such as amphidromes, indicating considerable improvement over previous works. Our sea surface variability maps show dearly the main current system, the well-known Zhejiang coastal upwelling, and a northern East China Sea meso-scale eddy in good agreement with satellite sea surface temperature (SST) bservation and historical in situ measurement. These all suggest that meaningful and reliable oceanographic results can still be achieved in shallow shelf waters from Geosat altimetry as long as proper data processing techniques are applied.展开更多

Ocean altimetry based on GNSS reflection technique is of low cost and it is easy to obtain large amounts of data thanks to the global navigation satellite constellation. We can estimate the sea surface height as well as the position of the specular reflection point. This paper focuses on the study of the algorithm to determine the specular reflection point and altimetry equations to estimate the sea surface height over the reflection region. We derive the error equation of sea surface height based on the error propagation theory. Effects of the Doppler shift and the size of the glistening zone on the altimetry are discussed and analyzed at the same time. Finally, we calculate the sea surface height based on the simulated GNSS data within the whole day and verify the sea surface height errors according to the satellite elevation angles. The results show that the sea surface height can reach the precision of 6 cm for elevation angles of 55° to 90°, and the theoretical error and the calculated error are in good agreement.展开更多

In this paper, more than 20 years of merged absolute dynamic topography and merged sea level anomaly products from satellite altimetry are used to analyze the stability of the KE system. By analyzing the annually averaged sea surface topography, the variations of inter-annual path and annually averaged eddy kinetic energy at the KE region, the KE's two dynamic states are given as: the relatively stable state during 1993 1995, 2002-2005, and 2010-2012, and the unstable dynamic state among 1996-2001 and 2006-2009. During the stable state, the KE spindle had a shorter path length and smaller time-varying amplitude, as well as a trend to move northward. While during the unstable state, the KE spindle had a longer path length and an integral southward transport trend, and was observed to oscillate significantly over time. The analysis on the KE's upstream and downstream region gives the same variations, indi- cating that they are significantly affected by the El Nino events. The power spectrum of the mean latitudinal position variation of the KE's upstream and downstream shows significant quasi-decadal oscillation characteristics and strong annual signals. Furthermore, the correlation of the strength vari- ation between the southern RG and the KE's upstream is calculated to be 0.50 after low-pass filtering, and that of the mean latitudinal position variation between the southern RG and the KE's upstream/ downstream are 0.75/0.69 after low-pass filtering, respectively. The strong correlations demonstrated that the southern RG and the KE are closely linked.展开更多

In this context, the problem of sea levels on global and regional scales have been analyzed in a number of studies based on tide gauges observations and satellite altimetry measurements. This study focuses on trend estimates from 18 high-quality tide gauge stations along the Mediterranean Sea coast. The seasonal Mann-Kendall test was run at a 5% significance level for each of the 18 stations for the period of 1993-2015 (satellite altimetry era). The results of this test indicate that the trends for 17 stations were statistically significant and showed an increase (no significant trend was observed only at one station). The rates of sea level change for the 17 stations that exhibit significant trends, estimated using seasonal Sen's approach, range after correction for Vertical Land Motion (VLM) from 1.48 to 8.72 mm/a for the period 1993-2015. Furthermore, the magnitude of change at the location of each tide gauge station was estimated using the satellite altimetry measurements. Thus, the results obtained agree with those from the tide-gauge data analysis.展开更多

The drifter data used in this study includes Argos and surface drifter data from Global Drifter Program. Maps of Sea Level Anomaly (MSLA) weekly files with a resolution of (1/3)° in both Latitude and Longitude for the period 1993-2012 have been used. The Ekman current is computed using ocean surface mean wind fields from scatterometers onboard ERS 1/2, Quikscat and ASCAT. The derived mean velocity field exhibits the broad flow of Antarctic Circumpolar Current with speeds up to 0.6 m/s. Anomalous field is quite significant in the western part between 20~ and 40~E and in the eastern part between 80~E and 100~E with velocity anomaly up to 0.3 m/s. The estimated mean flow pattern well agrees with the dynamic topography derived from in-situ observations. Also, the derived velocity field is consistent with the in-situ ADCP current measurements. Eddy kinetic energy illustrates an increasing trend during 1993-2008 and is in phase coherence with the Southern Annular Mode by three month lag. Periodic modulations are found in the eddy kinetic energy due the low frequency Antarctic Circumpolar Wave propagation.展开更多

文摘Elevation change monitoring of the Antarctic ice sheet has been a key issue in global change research.Satellite altimetry has been proven to be effective in detecting ice sheet variations. The results demonstrate that the IGGⅢ method effectively reduces errors caused by the inclusion of anomalous data and maintains the high data utilization rate of repeat-orbit methods.

文摘This paper focuses on estimating a new high-resolution Earth’s gravity field model named SGG-UGM-2 from satellite gravimetry, satellite altimetry, and Earth Gravitational Model 2008(EGM2008)-derived gravity data based on the theory of the ellipsoidal harmonic analysis and coefficient transformation(EHA-CT).We first derive the related formulas of the EHA-CT method, which is used for computing the spherical harmonic coefficients from grid area-mean and point gravity anomalies on the ellipsoid. The derived formulas are successfully evaluated based on numerical experiments. Then, based on the derived least-squares formulas of the EHA-CT method,we develop the new model SGG-UGM-2 up to degree 2190 and order 2159 by combining the observations of the Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer(GOCE),the normal equation of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment(GRACE),marine gravity data derived from satellite altimetry data, and EGM2008-derived continental gravity data. The coefficients of degrees 251–2159 are estimated by solving the block-diagonal form normal equations of surface gravity anomalies(including the marine gravity data). The coefficients of degrees 2–250 are determined by combining the normal equations of satellite observations and surface gravity anomalies. The variance component estimation technique is used to estimate the relative weights of different observations. Finally, global positioning system(GPS)/leveling data in the mainland of China and the United States are used to validate SGG-UGM-2 together with other models, such as European improved gravity model of the earth by new techniques(EIGEN)-6C4,GECO,EGM2008,and SGG-UGM-1(the predecessor of SGG-UGM-2).Compared to other models, the model SGG-UGM-2 shows a promising performance in the GPS/leveling validation. All GOCE-related models have similar performances both in the mainland of China and the United States, and better performances than that of EGM2008 in the mainland of China.Due to the contribution of GRACE data and the new marine gravity anomalies,SGG-UGM-2 is slightly better than SGG-UGM-1 both in the mainland of China and the United States.

文摘Eddy properties in the Bay of Bengal are studied from 22 a archiving, validation and interpretation of satellite oceanographic(AVISO) data using a sea level anomaly(SLA)-based eddy identification. The interannual variability of an eddy number shows an obvious negative correlation with the EKE variation.

文摘Patterns of the South China Sea (SCS) circulation variability are extracted from merged satellite altimetry data from October 1992 through August 2004 by using the self-organizing map (SOM). Besides the strong 1997/1998 event in response to the peak Pacific El Nio in 1997, the overall SCS sea level is found to have a significant rise during 1999~2001, however, in summer 2004 the overall SCS sea level is lower and the basin-wide anticyclonic gyre becomes weaker than the other years.

文摘The global distributions of eight principal tidal constituents, M2, S2, K1, O1, N2, K2, P1, and Q1, are derived using TOPEX/Poseidon and JASON-1(T/P-J) satellite altimeter data for 16 a. The total global tidal dissipation rate of these eight constituents amounts to 3.5 TW.

文摘The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment(GRACE) satellite mission provides a unique opportunity to quantitatively study terrestrial water storage(TWS) variations. The TWS is governed mainly by the soil moisture content and dominated primarily by the precipitation but also modulated by the flood season of the Yangtze River as well as the lake and river exchange water.
文摘Global ocean tides data were derived from Geosat altimeter data by means of the Quasi Harmonic Constituent Method (QHCM). Comparison also showed that island tidal constants cannot represent well the tidal distribution in the ocean near the island, because of the significant local effect on tides.

文摘In order to overcome the limitations of a unitary reference station in mobile communication positioning network differential barometric altimetry(DBA)and broaden the action scope of the reference station and improve positioning accuracy of elevation,an integrated interpolation algorithm model based on generalized extended approximation(GEA)algorithm and Kriging interpolation in time-space domain of reference station is proposed. In the time domain, barometric measured data is considered the maximum value estimated by bilateral extension to avoid wrong direction of estimation, which is approaching true value. In the spatial domain, barometric relevance among multiple reference stations is utilized, the weighted coefficients of multiple reference stations is calculated by the integrated algorithm model based on the GEA algorithm and Kriging interpolation. The impact of each reference station to the measured station is quantified,so that a virtual reference station is constructed, which can overcome the limitation of barometric correction by a unitary reference station. In addition, the measurement error due to irregular change in atmospheric pressure will be eliminated.

文摘The deep ocean below 2000 m is a large water body with the sparsest data coverage, challenging the closure of the sea-level budget and the estimation of the Earth’s energy imbalance.Whether the deep ocean below 2000 m is warming globally has been debated in the recent decade. However,as the regional signals are generally larger than the global average,it is intriguing to investigate the regional temperature changes. Here,we adopt an indirect method that combines altimetry,GRACE,and Argo data to examine the global and regional deep ocean temperature changes below 2000 m.The consistency between high-quality conductivity-temperature-depth(CTD)data from repeated hydrographic sections and our results confirms the validity of the indirect method. We find that the deep oceans are warming in the Middle East Indian Ocean, the subtropical North and Southwest Pacific, and the Northeast Atlantic, but cooling in the Northwest Atlantic and Southern oceans from 2005 to 2015.

文摘Collinear analysis technique is widely used for determining sea surface variability with Geosat altimeter data from its Exact Repeat Mission (ERM). These all suggest that meaningful and reliable oceanographic results can still be achieved in shallow shelf waters from Geosat altimetry as long as proper data processing techniques are applied.

文摘As a new remote sensing technology, the global navigation satellite system(GNSS) reflection signals can be used to collect the information of ocean surface wind, surface roughness and sea surface height. The results show that the sea surface height can reach the precision of 6 cm for elevation angles of 55° to 90°, and the theoretical error and the calculated error are in good agreement.

文摘The elastic thickness of the lithosphere(Te)is a key parameter used to describe the strength of the lithosphere. It is usually estimated by a spectral analysis between gravity and topography. In previous research on the estimation of Te,altimetry data were used on both the gravity data and topography data, which could lead to deviations. The study described in this paper analyzed the effects of using gravity anomalies derived from different data sources on the estimation of Te,Taking the western Pacific region as an example, this study analyzed the impact of the repeated presence of altimetry satellite data on the calculation of the effective elastic thickness and found that if gravity anomalies and topography model both contain altimetry satellite data, they systematically overestimate effective elasticity. For a uniform area, the difference in Te can reach up to 30%.For a Te distribution, the difference can reach up to about16%.After eliminating this effect, the effective elastic thickness of the western Pacific region was found to be 10 km,and the statistical results of the effective elastic thickness distribution showed that the effective elastic thickness of the lithosphere in most areas of the western Pacific is about 12 km.The paper shows the importance of choosing the appropriate gravity model in evaluating the elastic thickness of lithosphere in the oceans.A figure of Te at seamounts with loading ages demonstrates that Te in the western Pacific is generally distributed within the 100-300℃isotherm depth and does not increase with loading age.

文摘Total sea level variations(SLVs) are caused by two major components:steric variations due to thermal expansion of seawater, and mass-induced variations due to mass exchange between ocean and land.In this study, the global SLV and its steric and mass components were estimated by satellite altimetry,Argo float data and the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment(GRACE) data over 2005-2014.Space gravimetry observations from GRACE suggested that two-thirds of the global mean sea level rise rate observed by altimetry(i.e.,3.1 ± 0.3 mm/a from 2005 to 2014) could be explained by an increase in ocean mass.Furthermore, the global mean sea level was observed to drop significantly during the2010/2011 La Nina event, which may be attributed to the decline of ocean mass and steric SLV.Since early 2011,the global mean sea level began to rise rapidly, which was attributed to an increase in ocean mass. The findings in this study suggested that the global mean sea-level budget was closed from 2005 to 2014 based on altimetry,GRACE,and Argo data.
文摘This study endeavors to deal with the least square spectral analysis on the time series, to find present significant frequencies, to analyze 40 tide components using harmonic methods and to show relationship between discovered frequencies and 40 components of tide. For the purpose of collecting data of altimetry satellites of Topex/Poseidon (T/P), Jason 1, Jason 2 and coastal tide gauges of Bandar Anzali, Noshahr, and Nekah were utilized. In this time series formed by cross over points of altimetry satellite and then using least square spectral analysis on time series derived from altimetry satellite and coastal tide gauges the significant components were found and annual, biannual, and monthly components were discovered. Then, analysis of 40 tide components was conducted using harmonic method to find the amplitude and phase. It represented that solar annual (Sa) plays the most significant role on Caspian Sea corresponded to the least square spectral analysis of the time series. The results shows that the annual (Sa) and semi-annual Solar (Ssa) constituents on all of the ports listed have the highest amplitude in comparison with the other constituents which are respectively 16 cm, 18 cm and 15 cm for annual constituent and 2.8 cm, 5.4 cm and 3.7 cm for semi-annual constituent.

文摘The Kuroshio Extension (KE) plays an important role in climate and environmental change in the North Pacific. The strong correlations demonstrated that the southern RG and the KE are closely linked.

文摘The laser altimeter loaded on the GaoFen-7(GF-7)satellite is designed to record the full waveform data and footprint image, which can obtain high-precision elevation control points for stereo image. The footprint camera equipped on the GF-7 laser altimetry system can capture the energy distribution at the time of laser emission and the image of the ground object where the laser falls, which can be used to judge whether the laser is affected by the cloud. At the same time, the centroid of laser spot on the footprint image can be extracted to monitor the change of laser pointing stability. In this manuscript,a data quality analysis scheme of laser altimetry based on footprint image is presented.Firstly, the cloud detection of footprint image is realized based on deep learning. The fusion result of the model is about 5%better than that of the traditional cloud detection algorithm, which can quickly and accurately determine whether the laser spot is affected by cloud.Secondly, according to the characteristics of footprint image,a threshold constrained ellipse fitting method for extracting the centroid of laser spot is proposed to monitor the pointing stability of long-period lasers.Based on the above method, the change of laser spot centroid since GF-7 satellite was put into operation is analyzed, and the conclusions obtained have certain reference significance for the quality control of satellite laser altimetry data and the analysis of pointing angle stability.
文摘The impact of climate change on sea level has received a great deal of attention by scientists worldwide. Thus, the results obtained agree with those from the tide-gauge data analysis.

文摘High resoultion Eulerian mean velocity field has been derived by combining the satellite tracked surface drifter data with satellite altimetry and ocean surface winds. Periodic modulations are found in the eddy kinetic energy due the low frequency Antarctic Circumpolar Wave propagation.

文摘Based on the concept of Global Position System(GPS)/leveling,the satellite altimetry leveling(SAL) is first proposed to evaluate the marine geoid.SAL is derived by the difference among the mean sea surface(MSS),mean dynamic ocean topography(MDT),and leveling origin. In this study,(1) the original satellite altimetry data are processed to infer the vertical deflection and gravity anomaly,(2) the Chinese coastal marine geoids(CMG) are determined by using the differe nt methods(including Molodensky, least square collocation,Stokes formula, and two-dimensional fast Fourier transformation(FFT) with the vertical deflection and gravity anomaly data),(3) CMG are evaluated by using the results from above different methods, the Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer(GOCE) gravity potential model(GGPM),and SAL.The results show that(1) CMG from the Molodensky method has the highest precision by using vertical de flection data,(2) the accuracy of CMG indicate good consistency between the SAL and GGPM,(3) SAL can be used as a new method for assessing marine geoid.
