Physical activity, moderate aerobic or resistance exercise are well established to offer health benefits and promote healthy aging and longevity.^(1)In contrast, lack of exercise contributes to adverse events, especially in some patients with organ failure.^(2)Therefore,“exercise pills”and“exercise mimetics”have attracted growing interest because of their potential to induce exercise-related health effects despite physical exercise not being performed.^(3)Robust studies over the past decade have identified many natural biomacromolecules, such as peptide,non-coding Ribonucleic Acid(RNAs),and lipids, that are induced by exercise.^(4-6)These molecules trigger physiological adaptations, including promotion of cardiomyocyte proliferation,anti-apoptotic capacity, and healthy tissue growth.7However,identifying or designing an exercise pill that mimics the extensive benefits of exercise is still challenging. 展开更多

Background:Midlife lifestyle factors, including physical activity, are associated with late-life brain health, yet the role of aerobic exercise on structural brain health in early and mid-adulthood remains poorly understood. This study aimed to examine the effect of aerobic exercise on structural brain age and to explore potential mediators. Methods:In a single-blind,12-month randomized clinical trial,130 healthy participants aged 26-58 years were randomized into a moderate-to-vigorous intensity aerobic exercise group or a usual-care control group. The exercise group attended two supervised 60-min sessions per week in a laboratory setting plus engaged in home-based exercise to achieve 150 min of exercise per week.Brain-predicted age difference(brain-PAD)and cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF)were assessed at baseline and 12 months. Both intention-to-treat(ITT)and completers analyses(including participants who completed post-intervention assessments)were performed. Results:The 130 participants(67.7%female)had an age of 41.28±9.93 years(mean±SD).At baseline, higher CRF(peak oxygen uptake,VO_(2peak))was associated with smaller brain-PAD(β=-0.309,p=0.012).After the intervention, the exercise group showed a decrease in brainPAD(estimated mean difference(EMD)=-0.60;95%confidence interval(95%CI):-1.15 to-0.04;p=0.034)compared to the control group(EMD=0.35;95%CI:-0.21 to 0.92;p=0.217);time×group interaction(between-group difference(BGD)=-0.95;95%CI:-1.72 to-0.17;p=0.019).VO2peak improved in the exercise group(EMD=1.60;95%CI:0.29-2.90;p=0.017)compared to the control group(EMD=-0.78;95%CI:-2.17 to 0.60;p=0.265);time×group interaction(BGD=2.38;95%CI:0.52-4.25;p=0.015).Body composition, blood pressure, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels were unaffected.None of the proposed pathways statistically mediated the effect of exercise on brain-PAD.The results from completers were similar. Conclusion:Engaging in 12 months of moderate-to-vigorous exercise reduced brain-PAD in early-to-midlife adults. The pathways by which these effects occur remain unknown. 展开更多

Early prevention and control of coal spontaneous combustion have emerged as a critical research area in coal mine safety.Due to their sustainability and environmental friendliness, microorganisms have gained attention.A filamentous fungus was collected in the coal mine and identified as Absidia spinosa. Results indicated that the mycelium effectively covered and repaired many coal pores. The oxygen consumption ratio of A.spinosa was higher in coal-containing environments than in coal-free conditions. The fungus significantly impacted aliphatic functional groups, disrupting bridging bonds and side chains connected to aromatic structures and reducing the relative content of C—O bonds.Additionally,A.spinosa increases the ignition temperature by 25.34℃.The total heat release was decreased by approximately 32.58%,and the activation energies were increased. The genome of Absidia spinosa revealed genes related to oxygen consumption, small molecule degradation, and secretion of metabolic products, such as those annotated under GO ID:0140657,etc.The pathways involved in the degradation of small organic molecules(e.g.,ko00626,etc.),carbon fixation, and nitrogen cycling, all linked to coal decomposition.Through oxygen consumption and the alteration of coal-active structures,A.spinosa effectively inhibits CSC,providing an experimental basis for exploring eco-friendly biological control methods in the goaf. 展开更多

Reducing aerobic spoilage and rumen greenhouse gas emissions from anaerobically fermented feeds remains critical challenges in energy saving and environmental protection of animal husbandry. This study investigated the effects of dandelions, both alone and combined with Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus buchneri(LAB)on fermentation quality, bacteriome and mycobiome after 180 d of anaerobic and 4 d of aerobic fermentation of whole-plant corn.In vitro dry matter digestion(IVDMD)and gas production from anaerobically fermented whole-plant corn were also assessed. The results demonstrated that dandelions, either alone or combined with LAB,effectively improved fermentation quality by reducing NH_(3)-N concentrations(22.72–25.99%)after anaerobic fermentation, decreasing the proliferation of yeast and molds to enhance the aerobic stability.Notably, the changes in the bacteriome were more pronounced than those in the mycobiome after aerobic exposure. The addition of dandelions or the combination reduced Acetobacter fabarum abundance,a member of the Acetobacter that was spoilage-induced microbe indicated by correlation analysis.Besides, these treatments facilitated competition relations of microbiome which contributed to the enhanced aerobic stability.Furthermore, dandelions reduced CH_(4)and CO_(2)emissions by 14.88 and 13.73%,respectively,and also positively influencing IVDMD by 4.46%.Collectively,dandelion alone or combined with LAB are promising strategies to improve the aerobic stability of anaerobically fermented whole-plant corn,a process linked to the interactions between the bacteriome and mycobiome, and to contribute to clean production by reducing rumen CH_(4)and CO_(2)emissions. 展开更多

Antibiotic contamination has garnered significant attention, particularly given the growing pressures from aquaculture,a key contributor to environmental antibiotic loads.Addressing both antibiotic and nitrogen pollution in such ecosystems is critical. In this study, the aerobic denitrifying bacterium Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus RAD-2,previously isolated in our laboratory, was subjected to a series of concentration gradients(0,20,40,60,80,100 mg/L)to evaluate the single and combined effects of tetracycline(TET)and chlortetracycline(CTC)on the aerobic denitrification process.Among them, the combined effects of antibiotics were set up in a full-factor experimental design(a total of 30 treatment combinations)on the basis of the single-factor experiments of TET and CTC.Results demonstrated that the inhibitory impact of both antibiotics intensified with increasing concentration, with CTC exerting a more pronounced inhibitory effect.Notably,RAD-2 was unable to proliferate at 100 mg/L of TET or 80 mg/L of CTC.High concentrations of either antibiotic significantly suppressed the expression of key denitrification functional genes, including nirX,napA,norB,and nosZ.Furthermore, simultaneous exposure to both antibiotics led to a rapid decline in nitrogen removal efficiency(TET or CTC>60 mg/L),alongside substantial inhibition of bacterial growth and functional gene expression, except for napA.Under specific concentration ranges, the combination of TET and CTC exhibits a certain degree of antagonistic effect. These findings provide critical insights into the restoration of wetland ecosystem health and inform strategies to mitigate the dual challenges of antibiotic and nitrogen pollution in aquaculture effluents. 展开更多

A novel salt-tolerant aerobic denitrifying bacterium,Marinobacter sp.strain B108,was isolated from a marine recirculating aquaculture system(MRAS).The optimal aerobic denitrification parameters were CH_(3)COONa as carbon source,pH of 8,C/N of16,temperature of 35°C,dissolved oxygen(DO)of 6 mg/L and salinity of 30.Under these optimal conditions,Marinobacter sp.strain B108 had a removal efficiency of 100%for N O_(3)^(-)-N and 98.89%for total nitrogen(TN)within 24 h.The nitrate removal pathways of Marinobacter sp.strain B108 were included by the assimilative reduction pathway(N O_(3)^(-)-N→biomass N)and the dissimilatory reduction pathway(N O_(3)^(-)-N→N_(2))of aerobic denitrification, and lack of dissimilatory reduction to ammonium pathway(N O_(3)^(-)-N→N H_(4)^(+)-N).The nitrogen removal process of Marinobacter sp.strain B108 was mainly contributed by the dissimilatory reduction pathway. The kinetic parameters for N O_(3)^(-)-N and N O_(2)^(-)-N removal were determined as V_(m)of 971.566 and 165.336 mg/(gDCW·L·h),and K_(m)of 22.74 and 31.68 mg/L,respectively.This work reflects the practical application potential of Marinobacter sp.strain B108for nitrogen removal in MRAS. 展开更多

Aerobic exercise facilitates synaptic plasticity, thereby improving cognitive functions such as learning and memory. The 5-hydroxytryptamine system has been indicated in these processes.5-Hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptors are necessary for exercise-induced hippocampal neurogenesis. Some antipsychotic drugs with 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptor antagonistic properties may impede the amelioration of cognitive impairment and hippocampal plasticity induced by exercise. However, the mechanisms underlying the facilitation of synaptic plasticity by aerobic exercise have not yet been elucidated. In this study,we found that 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptors played an important role in aerobic exercise-mediated improvement of hippocampal-dependent spatial and exploratory memory in mice. While 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptors did not affect baseline neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus,5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptors were required for aerobic exercise-induced neurogenesis and astrocyte proliferation in this region. In addition,5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptors were crucial for maintaining long-term potentiation in the CA1,dentate gyrus, and CA3 regions of the hippocampus. The long-term potentiation changes induced by aerobic exercise in sub-regions of the hippocampus were heterogeneous:5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptors were essential for aerobic exercise to enhance long-term potentiation in the CA3,but not the CA1 or dentate gyrus, regions of the hippocampus.Furthermore, aerobic exercise up-regulated 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptor expression and increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor release in the hippocampus in a 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptor-dependent manner. These results suggest that aerobic exercise increases hippocampal dentate gyrus neurogenesis and astrocyte proliferation via the up-regulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptors, leading to more brain-derived neurotrophic factor production and release from these cells, which results in long-term potentiation facilitation in the hippocampal CA3 region and help improve memory. Our findings provide insight into the mechanisms by which physical activity enhances memory and may have implications for improving memory through modulating 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptor. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),a chronic metabolic disease with a high global incidence, has become a serious public health challenge.China has the largest number of T2DM patients worldwide, imposing a significant economic burden on the healthcare system.T2DM is closely associated with insulin resistance, impaired pancreatic B cell function, and disordered glucose and lipid metabolism, which can lead to various complications, reducing patients'quality of life and increasing the risk of disability and death. Thus, finding effective preventive and intervention measures is crucial.Exercise therapy,a key part of diabetes management, has gained attention in recent years, with many studies indicating its benefits for blood glucose control and other aspects in diabetic patients.AIM To assess the effectiveness of combined resistance and aerobic exercise interventions on blood glucose control and metabolic indicators in patients with T2DM and to explore their application in diabetes management.METHODS Systematic searches were conducted using PubMed,EMBASE,Cochrane Library, and Chinese databases for relevant randomized controlled trials(RCTs).The inclusion criteria were participants aged≥18 years with T2DM and the intervention involved combined resistance and aerobic exercise for≥8 weeks. The primary outcome indicators were fasting blood glucose,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),triglycerides(TG),glycated hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c),and total cholesterol(TC)levels.Data analysis was performed using RevMan software, and the interventional effects were assessed using weighted mean differences or standardized mean differences(SMD).RESULTS Six RCTs meeting the inclusion criteria were included, with a total sample size of 366 participants. The meta-analysis results showed that combined resistance and aerobic exercise significantly improved several metabolic indicators in patients with T2DM.Specific results were as follows:(1)For fasting blood glucose, combined exercise was more effective than aerobic exercise alone[SMD=1.22;95%confidence interval(95%CI):0.70,1.74;P<0.00001];(2)LDL-C levels were significantly reduced by the combined intervention(SMD=1.45;95%CI:1.18-1.72;P<0.00001);(3)The combined intervention significantly increased HDL-C levels(SMD=1.42;95%CI:0.98-1.87;P<0.00001);(4)The combined intervention significantly reduced TG levels(SMD=1.12;95%CI:0.85-1.39;P<0.00001;(5)No statistically significant difference was observed in HbA1c between the combined and the aerobic exercise group(SMD=-0.03;95%CI:-1.09 to 1.04;P<0.00001);and(6)The combined exercise intervention group significantly reduced TC levels(SMD=2.66;95%CI:1.93-3.38;P<0.00001).The subgroup analysis results suggest that the effect of exercise interventions may be influenced by various factors, including the patient's age, baseline blood glucose levels, and exercise intensity.CONCLUSION Combined resistance and aerobic exercise intervention significantly improved fasting blood glucose,LDL-C,HDL-C,TG,and TC levels in patients with T2DM,especially in terms of blood glucose control and cardiovascular risk, demonstrating better outcomes than aerobic exercise alone. 展开更多

With the rapid development of the marine economy, marine microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC)has garnered increasing attention. However, most studies have not analyzed the MIC process over continuous and extended periods, failing to provide a comprehensive understanding of MIC mechanisms at different stages. In this study, the corrosion behavior of EH36 steel caused by Halomonas titanicae in an aerobic enriched seawater over a 30-d incubation period was investigated driven by big data. The results revealed that the corrosion by H.titanicae against EH36 steel evolved dynamically over time.During the initial stages, the aerobic respiration of H.titanicae consumed significant amounts of oxygen, which suppressed the cathodic oxygen reduction process, thereby inhibiting corrosion compared to the abiotic conditions. As time progressed, the accumulation of corrosion products slowed the abiotic corrosion, while the biotic corrosion accelerated due to a shift from aerobic to anaerobic respiration by H.titanicae, utilizing Fe0 and nitrate as electron donors and acceptors, respectively. The big data results are consistent with the weight loss and electrochemical data, demonstrating the reliability of using big data monitoring techniques to characterize microbial corrosion processes. 展开更多
