Restoration of phase aberrations is crucial for addressing atmospheric turbulence in light propagation.Traditional restoration algorithms based on Zernike polynomials(ZPs)often encounter challenges related to high computational complexity and insufficient capture of high-frequency phase aberration components,so we proposed a Principal-Component-Analysis-based method for representing phase aberrations. This paper discusses the factors influencing the accuracy of restoration, mainly including the sample space size and the sampling interval of D/r_(0),on the basis of characterizing phase aberrations by Principal Components(PCs).The experimental results show that a larger D/r_(0)sampling interval can ensure the generalization ability and robustness of the principal components in the case of a limited amount of original data, which can help to achieve high-precision deployment of the model in practical applications quickly. In the environment with relatively strong turbulence in the test set of D/r_(0)=24,the use of 34 terms of PCs can improve the corrected Strehl ratio(SR)from 0.007 to 0.1585,while the Strehl ratio of the light spot after restoration using 34 terms of ZPs is only 0.0215,demonstrating almost no correction effect. The results indicate that PCs can serve as a better alternative in representing and restoring the characteristics of atmospheric turbulence induced phase aberrations. These findings pave the way to use PCs of phase aberrations with fewer terms than traditional ZPs to achieve data dimensionality reduction, and offer a reference to accelerate and stabilize the model and deep learning based adaptive optics correction. 展开更多

Transcranial focused ultrasound(tFUS)is an emerging modality with strong potential for non-invasively treating brain disorders. However, the inhomogeneity and complex structure of the skull induce substantial phase aberrations and pressure attenuation;these can distort and shift the acoustic focus, thus hindering the efficiency of tFUS therapy. To achieve effective treatments, phased array transducers combined with aberration correction algorithms are commonly implemented. The present report aims to provide a comprehensive review of the current methods used for tFUS phase aberration correction. We first searched the PubMed and Web of Science databases for studies on phase aberration correction algorithms, identifying 54 articles for review.Relevant information, including the principles of algorithms and refocusing performances, were then extracted from the selected articles. The phase correction algorithms involved two main steps:acoustic field estimation and transmitted pulse adjustment. Our review identified key benchmarks for evaluating the effectiveness of these algorithms, each of which was used in at least three studies. These benchmarks included pressure and intensity, positioning error, focal region size, peak sidelobe ratio, and computational efficiency.Algorithm performances varied under different benchmarks, thus highlighting the importance of application-specific algorithm selection for achieving optimal tFUS therapy outcomes. The present review provides a thorough overview and comparison of various phase correction algorithms, and may offer valuable guidance to tFUS researchers when selecting appropriate phase correction algorithms for specific applications. 展开更多

AIM:To compare the visual outcomes and corneal higherorder aberrations(HOAs)of patients with high or low myopic astigmatism after small incision lenticule extraction(SMILE).METHODS:A total of 157 eyes of 157 patients who underwent SMILE were included in this retrospective, nonrandomized, comparative study. All the eyes which were with the rule astigmatism were divided into high astigmatism group(HAG;astigmatism≤-2.00 D,73 eyes)and low astigmatism group(LAG;astigmatism≥-1.00 D,84 eyes).Visual and refractive examinations were performed,HOAs of the anterior surface, posterior surface, and total cornea of the eyes were evaluated preoperatively and 6mo postoperatively.RESULTS:At the postoperative 6-month follow-up,uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/20 or better was achieved in 97%and 100%eyes in HAG and LAG respectively and 74%and 100%eyes were within-0.50 D.Vector analysis revealed no significant differences in the correction index(P=0.066),angle of error(P=0.091)or flattening index(P=0.987)between two groups. The magnitude of error was-0.37±0.31 D in HAG and-0.04±0.19 D in LAG(P<0.001).Index of success(IOS)was 0.22±0.09 in the HAG and 0.50±0.46 in the LAG(P<0.001).HOAs of most anterior, posterior and total cornea significantly increased after SMILE,especially the spherical aberration and coma. For HAG,the SMILE procedure induced significantly higher anterior, posterior and total cornea horizontal coma and total corneal total HOAs compared with LAG(P<0.001)and these surgically induced HOAs predominantly originated from the anterior surface of the cornea.CONCLUSION:SMILE surgery induces more HOAs and a mild under-correction of astigmatism in eyes with high astigmatism. The increment in HOAs after SMILE is related to preoperative astigmatism. 展开更多

Over the past few decades,angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES)has been one of the important tools to study electronic structure of crystals. In recent years, the spatial resolution of around 150 nm has been reached through tight focusing of the light spot(nano-ARPES).At present, the lower limit of the spot size of the light on the sample has been reached.Another way to further improve the spatial resolution is through using apertures to only let electrons from a small area of the sample pass. With both back-focal plane and image apertures, the size of the selected area can be as small as 20 nm.Yet,without aberration correction, the maximum opening angle at the sample for 20 nm spatial resolution is usually smaller than 3°,making this method not suitable for nano-ARPES.As shown in this paper,a conventional aberration corrector, which corrects chromatic and third-order spherical aberrations,is not enough either.Only when the fifth-order spherical aberration is also corrected, the opening angle at the sample is large enough for nano-ARPES.In this paper, the design of a time-of-fight PEEM/ARPES/nano-ARPES instrument, which is currently under development at the Quantum Science Center of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area,is presented. The main point of innovation is a fiveelectrode electron mirror corrector, which is used to correct simultaneously chromatic,third-order and fifth-order spherical aberrations, resulting in 1 nm spatial resolution with~230 mrad aperture angle in PEEM mode. This makes feasible the method of using apertures to improve the spatial resolution of the nano-ARPES mode.A new design of the magnetic prism array(MPA)is also presented, which preserves the rotational symmetry better than the existing designs. 展开更多

Recent advances in scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM)have led to increased development of multidimensional STEM imaging modalities and novel image reconstruction methods. This interest arises because the main electron lens in a modern transmission electron microscope usually has a diffraction-space information limit that is significantly better than the real-space resolution of the same lens. This state-of-affairs is sometimes shared by other scattering methods in modern physics and contributes to a broader excitement surrounding multidimensional techniques that scan a probe while recording diffraction-space images, such as ptychography and scanning nano-beam diffraction. However, the contrasting resolution in the two spaces raises the question as to what is limiting their effective performance. Here,we examine this paradox by considering the effects of aberrations in both image and diffraction planes, and likewise separate the contributions of pre-and post-sample aberrations. This consideration provides insight into aberration-measurement techniques and might also indicate improvements for super-resolution techniques. 展开更多

AIM:To evaluate the efficacy of custom-made soft keratoconus(KC)lenses on corneal aberrations and photic phenomena in two different optical zones in patients with KC.METHODS:Sixty eyes of 42 patients with KC were examined at baseline and after fitting HydroCone(Toris K)soft silicone hydrogel lenses.Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity(BSCVA)and contact lens-corrected visual acuity(CLCVA)were recorded.Lower-and higher-order corneal aberrations(LOAs and HOAs)were measured with and without Toris K lenses and compared in central 4.5 mm and 7 mm zones.Mesopic pupil diameter and subjective photic phenomena were also assessed.RESULTS:Mean CLCVA was significantly improved compared to BSCVA(P<0.0001).Corneal curvature and refractive measurements were found to be significantly reduced by the use of Toris K lenses, except for posterior corneal curvature values. In the 4.5 mm central optical zone, all wavefront aberrations decreased significantly after lens fitting(P<0.0001).In contrast,in the 7 mm(peripheral)optical zone, values for HOAs,spherical and residual aberrations, and optical path differences were increased, while LOAs,trefoil, and quadrifoil coefficients were decreased. The rate of photic phenomena was significantly higher in participants with a pupil size>6.00 mm(85.7%).CONCLUSION:Toris K lenses provide good visual results and a significant reduction in central corneal aberrations in patients with KC but could cause an increase in peripheral aberrations. This practical and nonsurgical approach appears to be an effective method for the visual management of KC. 展开更多

We can say it in a slightly different way. By means of the all known experiments, stellar aberration is directly or indirectly detectable and measurable, only if a detector changes its velocity. Our presumption is that stellar aberration is not caused by the changes in the velocity of the detector. It exists due to the movement of the detector regarding to an absolute inertial frame. Therefore it is just the question of how to choose such a frame. In this paper it is proposed a method to detect and measure instantaneous stellar aberration due to absolute velocity. We can call it an “absolute” stellar aberration. Combining an “annual” and an “absolute” we can define a “total” stellar aberration. 展开更多

AIM: To compare the visual and optical performance of eyes with different corneal spherical aberration (SA) implanted with spherical aberration-free intraocular lens (IOLs). METHODS: Thirty-six patients with different corneal SA had phacoemulsification with implantation of spherical aberration-free IOLs. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the value of preoperative corneal SA. Eyes with corneal SA <0.10 mu m were assigned to group A, those with 0.10 <= corneal SA <0.20 mu m to Group B, and those with 0.20 <= corneal SA <0.35 mu m to Group C. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity, corneal SA, total ocular aberrations, and depth of focus were recorded 3 months postoperatively. Distance-corrected near and intermediate visual acuity was studied to measure depth of focus. RESULTS: BCVA and contrast sensitivity were similar between groups. There were no significant differences in distance-corrected near or intermediate visual acuity. Corneal SA was similar before and 3 months after surgery in the 3 groups. With a 5.0mm pupil diameter, root mean square values for total ocular higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were lower in groups A and B than in group C. Total ocular SA was lower in group A than in groups B and C. SA was also lower in group B than in group C. Coma and trefoil were similar between the groups. CONCLUSION: Implantation of spherical aberration-free IOLs in eyes with different corneal SA results in similar visual performance at BCVA, contrast sensitivity and depth of focus. 展开更多

Effects of varieties on the content of tea pigment, L*, a* and b* value of chromatic aberration of black tea infusion was studied. The correlation relationship between content of TF, TR, TB and L*, a*, b* value was extremely significant at P<0.05. Fresh tea leaves with plucking standard of 1 bud and 2 leaves could man-ufacture black tea with higher content of tea pigment, higher a* and b* value but lower L* value, than those of plucking standard of 1 bud and 3 leaves. But the discrepancy of certain parameter of the two plucking standards changed with vari-eties. Varieties’ quality potential could be concealed by improper plucking standards. Six varieties were divided into four groups on the basis of gross tea polyphenols in fresh tea leaves (GTP), consumption of tea polyphenols to gross tea polyphenols ratio (CTP/GTP) and gross tea pigment to consumption of tea polyphenols ratio (GP/CTP). Gallbladder cancer(GBC) is infrequent but most lethal biliary tract malignancy characterized by an advanced stage diagnosis and poor survival rates attributed to absence of specific symptoms and effective treatment options. These necessitate development of early prognostic/predictive markers and novel therapeutic interventions. Micro RNAs(mi RNAs) are small, noncoding RNA molecules that play a key role in tumor biology by functioning like tumor suppressor- or oncogenes and their aberrant expression are associated with the pathogenesis of several neoplasms with overwhelming clinical implications. Since mi RNA signature is tissue specific, here, we focused on current data concerning the mi RNAs abberations in GBC pathogenesis. In GBC, mi RNAs with tumor suppressor activity(mi R-135-5p, mi R-335, mi R-34 a, mi R-26 a, mi R-146b-5p, Mir-218-5p, mi R-1, mi R-145, mir-130a) were found downregulated, while those with oncogenic property(mi R-20 a, mi R-182, mir-155) were upregulated. The expression profile of mi RNAs was significantly associated with GBC prognosis and prediction, and forced over-expression/ inhibition of these mi RNAs was shown to affect tumor growth and development. Further, differential expression of mi RNAs in the blood samples of GBC patients suggest mi RNAs as promising noninvasive biomarker. Thus, mi RNAs represent potential candidate for GBC management, though many hurdles need to be overcome before mi RNAs therapy can be clinically applied to GBC prevention and treatment. 展开更多

AIM: To compare the difference and agreement of KR- lW and iTrace for measurement of high order aberrations.METHODS: KR-1W and iTrace were respectively used in a group of healthy people (40 volunteers, 32 eyes) to measure the high order aberration (HOA) of corneal, internal and total ocular. The clinical difference and agreement of two instruments were respectively evaluated by paired-samples 1-test and Bland-Altman analysis. RESULTS: The paired-samples t-test showed that the corneal HOA measured by the two instruments had no statistical differences (P〉0.05); but the internal and total ocular HOA had significant statistical differences (P〈 0.05), and the mean results measured by iTrace were higher than that of KR-1W. However, Bland-Altman analysis revealed that the HOA of corneal and internal were all in 95% limits of agreement; and just one point of total ocular HOA was beyond the 95% limits of agreement. CONCLUSION: KR-1W and iTrace were consistent well in the measurement of corneal, internal and total ocular HOA, especially for the cornea. 展开更多

Conformal domes that are shaped to meet aerodynamic requirements can increase range and speed for the host platform. Because these domes typically deviate greatly from spherical surface descriptions, a variety of aberrations are induced which vary with the field-of-regard (FOR) angle. A system for correcting optical aberrations created by a conformal dome has an outer surface and an inner surface. Optimizing the inner surface is regard as static aberration correction. A deformable mirror is placed at the position of the secondary mirror in the two-mirror all reflective imaging system, which is the dynamic aberration correction. An ellipsoidal MgF2 conformal dome with a fineness ratio of 1.0 is designed as an example. The FOR angle is 0°-30°, and the design wavelength is 4μm. After the optimization at 7 zoom positions by using the design tools Code V, the root-mean-square (RMS) spot size is reduced to approximately 0.99 to 1.48 times the diffraction limit. The design results show that the performances of the conformal optical systems can be greatly improved by the combination of the static correction and the dynamic correction. 展开更多

HOAs for a 6 -mm pupil were measured with an aberrometer. Myopic progression rate was defined according to the change in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) divided by the time span (years). Subjects with myopic progression rate of ≥0.50 diopters (D) were classified as the ’fast’group and the subjects with myopic progression rate of 【0.50D were classified as the’slow’group. A retrospective study was conducted to compare HOA between the two groups, using root mean square (RMS) values and Zernike coefficients. ·RESULTS: The RMS values of HOA (t =2.316, P =0.02), HOA without Z 4 0 (t =2.224, P =0.03),third-order aberrations (t’ =2.62, P =0.01), and coma (t’ =2.49, P =0.01) were significantly higher in the fast group than those in the slow group. The individual Zernike coefficients of Z 3 -1 (t = -2.072, P =0.04) and Z 5 1 (Z =-2.627, P =0.01) displayed statistically significant differences between the two groups. Significant correlations were found between the RMS values of HOA (r =0.193, P =0.019), RMS values of HOA without Z 4 0 (r =0.23, P =0.005), RMS values of coma(r =0.235,P =0.004),RMS values of third-order aberrations (r =0.243, P =0.003), and the progression rate. · CONCLUSION: Our results provide evidence of a relationship between HOA and myopic progression. In a future prospective longitudinal study, we aim to verify whether HOA is a risk factor for myopic progression. 展开更多

Purpose: To verify whether there exists any difference in higher order aberrations after undergoing myopic LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) with conventional ablation and customized ablation in different eyes of the same patient. Methods: This was a prospective randomized study of 54 myopic eyes (27 patients) that underwent LASIK using the Nidek EC-5000 ex-cimer laser system (Nidek, Gamagori, Japan). Topography-guided customized aspheric treatment zone (CATz) was used in the first eye of the patient (study group) and the other eye of the same patient was operated on with conventional ablation (control group). Higher order aberrations [root-mean-square (RMS) in the 5-mm zone] of both groups were observed with the Nidek OPD-Scan aberrometer before and 3 months after LASIK. Preoperative mean refractive error was similar between two eyes of the same patient (t=?0.577, P>0.05). Results: Preoperatively, higher order aberrations (RMS in the 5-mm zone) in the CATz ablation and conventional groups were (0.3600±0.0341) μm and (0.2680±0.1421) μm, respectively. This difference was not statistically significant (t=1.292, P>0.05). Three months after LASIK, higher order aberrations (RMS in 5-mm zone) in the CATz ablation and conventional groups were (0.3627±0.1510) μm and (0.3991±0.1582) μm, respectively. No statistically significant difference was noted between pre- and postoperative higher order aberrations in the CATz group (t=?0.047, P>0.05). However, a statistically significant increase in higher order aberrations was observed after conventional ablation (t=?5.261, P<0.05). A statistically sig-nificant difference was noted in the increase of higher order aberrations after LASIK between groups (t=?2.050, P=0.045). Con-clusion: LASIK with conventional ablation and topography-guided CATz ablation resulted in the same BSCVA (best specta-cle-corrected visual acuity) 3 month after LASIK. Higher order aberrations were increased, but the increase of higher order ab-errations after customized ablation treatment was less than that after conventional ablation. 展开更多
