To optimize the excavation of rock using underground blasting techniques,a reliable and simplified approach for modeling rock fragmentation is desired. This paper presents a multistep experimentalnumerical methodology for simplifying the three-dimensional(3D)to two-dimensional(2D)quasiplane-strain problem and reducing computational costs by more than 100-fold.First,in situ tests were conducted involving single-hole and free-face blasting of a dolomite rock mass in a 1050-m-deep mine. The results were validated by laser scanning. The craters were then compared with four analytical models to calculate the radius of the crushing zone.Next,a full 3D model for single-hole blasting was prepared and validated by simulating the crack length and the radius of the crushing zone.Based on the stable crack propagation zones observed in the 3D model and experiments,a 2D model was prepared. The properties of the high explosive(HE)were slightly reduced to match the shape and number of radial cracks and crushing zone radius between the 3D and 2D models. The final methodology was used to reproduce various cut-hole blasting scenarios and observe the effects of residual cracks in the rock mass on further fragmentation. The presence of preexisting cracks was found to be crucial for fragmentation, particularly when the borehole was situated near a free rock face. Finally,an optimization study was performed to determine the possibility of losing rock continuity at different positions within the well in relation to the free rock face. 展开更多

Characterized by special morphologic, geographic, hydrologic, and societal behaviors, the water resources management of the Mediterranean catchment often shows a higher level of complexity including security issues of water supply, inundation risks, and environment management under the perspective of climate change. To have a comprehensive understanding of the Mediterranean water-cycle system,a deterministic distributed hydrologic modeling approach has been developed and presented in this study based on an application in the Var catchment(2800 km^(2))located at the French Mediterranean region.A 1D and 2D coupled model of MIKE SHE and MIKE 11 has been set up under a series of hypotheses to represent the whole hydrologic and hydrodynamic processes including rainfall-runoff,snow-melting,channel flow, overland flow, and the water exchange between land surface and unsaturated/saturated zones. The developed model was first calibrated with 4 years daily records from 2008 to 2011,then to be validated and further run within hourly time interval to produce detailed representation of the catchment water-cycle from 2012 to 2014.The deterministic distributed modeling approach presented in this study is able to represent its complicated water-cycle and used for supporting the decision‐making process of the water resources management of the catchment. 展开更多

One of the largest known megafloods on earth resulted from a glacier dam-break,which occurred during the Late Quaternary in the Altai Mountains in Southern Siberia.Computational modeling is one of the viable approaches to enhancing the understanding of the flood events. The computational domain of this flood is over 9460 km2 and about 3.784 × 106 cells are involved as a 50 m × 50 m mesh is used, which necessitates a computationally efficient model. Here the Open MP(Open Multiprocessing) technique is adopted to parallelize the code of a coupled 2D hydrodynamic and sediment transport model. It is shown that the computational efficiency is enhanced by over 80% due to the parallelization. The floods over both fixed and mobile beds are well reproduced with specified discharge hydrographs at the dam site.Qualitatively, backwater effects during the flood are resolved at the bifurcation between the Chuja and Katun rivers.Quantitatively, the computed maximum stage and thalweg are physically consistent with the field data of the bars and deposits. The effects of sediment transport and morphological evolution on the flood are considerable.Sensitivity analyses indicate that the impact of the peak discharge is significant, whilst those of the Manningroughness, medium sediment size and shape of the inlet discharge hydrograph are marginal. 展开更多

Methane gas hydrate related bottom-simulating reflectors(BSRs)are imaged based on the in-line and cross-line multi-channel seismic(MCS)data from the Andaman Forearc Basin. The depth of the BSR depends on pressure and temperature and pore water salinity. With these assumptions, the BSR depth can be used to estimate the geothermal gradient(GTG)based on the availability of in-situ temperature measurements. This calculation is done assuming a 1D conductive model based on available in-situ temperature measurement at site NGHP-01-17 in the study area. However,in the presence of seafloor topography, the conductive temperature field in the subsurface is affected by lateral refraction of heat, which focuses heat in topographic lows and away from topographic highs. The 1D estimate of GTG in the Andaman Forearc Basin has been validated by drilling results from the NGHP-01 expedition.2D analytic modeling to estimate the effects of topography is performed earlier along selected seismic profiles in the study area. The study extended to estimate the effect of topography in 3D using a numerical model. The corrected GTG data allow us to determine GTG values free of topographic effect. The difference between the estimated GTG and values corrected for the 3D topographic effect varies up to~5℃/km.These conclude that the topographic correction is relatively small compared to other uncertainties in the 1D model and that apparent GTG determined with the 1D model captures the major features, although the correction is needed prior to interpreting subtle features of the derived GTG maps. 展开更多

Foam plays a crucial role in conditioning the mechanical properties of coarse-grained soil during earth pressure balance shield tunneling.Experimental findings have shown that an appropriate foam injection ratio improves the workability and compressibility of conditioned soil, while reducing its shear strength under undrained conditions.Understanding how foam operates in soil pores is essential for interpreting these phenomena. This study utilized a theoretical two-dimensional(2D)model to analyze the effects of gas saturation,gas-liquid interface, and gas dissolution on the undrained mechanical properties of foamconditioned soil.Based on these analyses,a constitutive equation was developed, using the transition void ratio, compression index and contact coefficient as key parameters to describe the relationships among vertical stress σ_(v),void ratio e_(c),and shear strengthτ.The undrained mechanical properties calculated by the 2D model align well with experimental observations, indicating that while foam enhances the bonding force between soil particles, both excessive and insufficient gas saturation, along with larger contact angles, notably undermine this enhancement, resulting in unsuitable workability.A gas saturation of 0.5-0.8 is recommended for soil conditioning.Under typical chamber pressures, the effects of gas-liquid interface and gas dissolution on compressibility and shear strength are negligible. The constitutive equation demonstrates excellent agreement with experimental data, and can well predict the variations in σ_(v)-e_(c)-τ.This study contributes to understanding the role of foam in soil pores, and the developed constitutive equation serves as a valuable reference for describing the undrained mechanical behavior of foam-conditioned coarse-grained soil. 展开更多

Crowdsourced data can effectively observe environmental and urban ecosystem processes. The use of data produced by untrained people into flood forecasting models may effectively allow Early Warning Systems(EWS)to better perform while support decision-making to reduce the fatalities and economic losses due to inundation hazard. In this work,we develop a Data Assimilation(DA)method integrating Volunteered Geographic Information(VGI)and a 2D hydraulic model and we test its performances. The proposed framework seeks to extend the capabilities and performances of standard DA works, based on the use of traditional in situ sensors,by assimilating VGI while managing and taking into account the uncertainties related to the quality, and the location and timing of the entire set of observational data. The November 2012 flood in the Italian Tiber River basin was selected as the case study. Results show improvements of the model in terms of uncertainty with a significant persistence of the model updating after the integration of the VGI,even in the case of use of few-selected observations gathered from social media. This will encourage further research in the use of VGI for EWS considering the exponential increase of quality and quantity of smartphone and social media user worldwide. 展开更多

The formation heterogeneity is considered as one of the major factors limiting the application of foam flooding. In this paper, influences of formation properties, such as permeability, permeability distribution, interlayer, sedimentary rhythm and 3D heterogeneity,on the mobility control capability and oil displacement efficiency of foam flooding, were systematically investigated using 2D homogeneous and 2D/3D heterogeneous models under 120°C and salinity of 20×10~4 mg/L.The flow resistance of foam was promoted as the permeability increased, which thus resulted in a considerable oil recovery behavior. In the scenario of the vertical heterogeneous formations,it was observed that the permeability of the high-permeable layer was crucial to foam mobility control, and the positive rhythm appeared favorable to improve the foam flooding performance. The additional oil recovery increased to about 40%.The interlayer was favorable for the increases in mobility reduction factor and oil recovery of foam flooding when the low permeability ratio was involved. For the 3D heterogeneous formations, foam could efficiently adjust the areal and vertical heterogeneity through mobility control and gravity segregation, and thus enhancing the oil recovery to 11%–14%.The results derived from this work may provide some insight for the field test designs of foam flooding. 展开更多

Furrow irrigation with film-mulched agricultural beds is being promoted in the arid region of northwest China because it improves water utilization. Two-dimensional infiltration patterns under film-mulched furrows can provide guidelines and criteria for irrigation design and operation. Our objective was to investigate soil water dynamics during ponding irrigation infiltration of mulched furrows in a cross-sectional ridge-furrow configuration, using laboratory experiments and mathematical simulations. Six experimental treatments, with two soil types (silt loam and sandy loam), were investigated to monitor the wetting patterns and soil water distribution in a cuboid soil chamber. Irrigation of mulched furrows clearly increased water lateral infiltration on ridge shoulders and ridges, due to enhancement of capillary driving force. Increases to both initial soil water content (SWC) and irrigation water level resulted in increased wetted soil volume. Empirical regression equations accurately estimated the wetted lateral distance (Rl) and downward distance (Rd) with elapsed time in a variably wetted soil medium. Optimization of model parameters followed by the Inverse approach resulted in satisfactory agreement between observed and predicted cumulative infiltration and SWC. On the basis of model calibration, HYDRUS-2D model can accurately simulate two-dimensional soil water dynamics under irrigation of mulched furrows. There were significant differences in wetting patterns between unmulched and mulched furrow irrigation using HYDRUS-2D simulation. The Rd under the mulched furrows was 32.14% less than the unmulched furrows. Therefore, film-mulched furrows are recommended in a furrow irrigation system. 展开更多

The present study focuses on building a workflow for structural interpretation and velocity modeling and implementing to Jurassic-Cretaceous succession (Chiltan Limestone and Massive sand of the Lower Goru Formation). 2D-Migrated seismic sections of the area are used as data set and in order to confirm the presence of hydrocarbons in the study area, P and S-wave seismic velocities are estimated from single-component seismic data. Some specific issues in the use of seismic data for modeling and hydrocarbon evaluation need to deal with including distinguishing the reservoir and cap rocks, and the effects of faults, folds and presence of hydrocarbons on these rocks. This study has carried out the structural interpretation and modeling of the seismic data for the identification of traps. The results demonstrate existence of appropriate structural traps in the form of horst and grabens in the area. 2D and 3D velocity modeling of the horizons indicates the presence of high velocity zones in the eastern half of the study while relatively low velocity zones are encountered in the western half of the area. Two wells were drilled in the study area (i.e. Fateh-01 and Ichhri-01) and both are dry. Immature hydrocarbons migration is considered as a failure reason for Fateh-01 and Ichhri-01 well. 展开更多

The nose shape effect on long-rod penetration was investigated by establishing numerical 2D models with different original nose shapes. The variations in nose shapes and the mass erosion rate of the rods in the transient phase, primary penetration phase, and secondary penetration phase were adequately analyzed by two dimensionless parameters,i.e.,the nose shape factor N* and the diameter ratio of the rod nose and shank n.In general,N*,η and the mass erosion rate of the rod vary distinctly in different phases,i.e.,unsteady in the initial transient and the secondary penetration phases, and quasi-steady in the primary penetration phase.Furthermore,a relationship between the mass erosion of the rod and the variation in the nose shape was established.A three-phase 2D model of long-rod penetration was further constructed by considering the variations in nose shape. This research may provide a reference to improve the theoretical model of long-rod penetration. 展开更多

A 2D vertical (2DV) numerical model, without o-coordinate transformation in the vertical direction, is developed for the simulation of flow and sediment transport in open channels. In the model, time-averaged Reynolds equations are closed by the k-e nonlinear turbulence model. The modified Youngs- VOF method is introduced to capture free surface dynamics, and the free surface slope is simulated using the ELVIRA method. Based on the power-law scheme, the k-e model and the suspended-load transport model are solved numerically with an implicit scheme applied in the vertical plane and an explicit scheme applied in the horizontal plane. Bedload transport is modeled using the Euler-WENO scheme, and the grid-closing skill is adopted to deal with the moving channel bed boundary. Verification of the model using laboratory data shows that the model is able to adequately simulate flow and sediment transport in open channels, and is a good starting point for the study of sediment transport dynamics in strong nonlinear flow scenarios. 展开更多

Due to the high population density and economic property in urban environments, urban flooding can result in substantial economic losses. However, accurate urban flood modeling and assessing the associated damages are challenging due to complex urban layouts and rugged topography.Furthermore, the rapid development of urban underground spaces has introduced additional complexities. To address the demanding need for accurate flood modeling and damage assessment in cities,a fine-scale flood damage assessment method was proposed in this study, based on the 1D/2D coupled hydrodynamic model, which can not only assess the flood damage on the ground surface but also evaluate the flood loss in underground spaces.Taking the Gangxi drainage area in Wuhan City,China as a case, this study extensively discussed the flood inundation processes on the ground surface as well as in the buildings and underground spaces, under different rainfall scenarios with the return period ranging from 2 to 200 years.Based on the high spatial-temporal hydrodynamic simulations, the flood damage degrees were evaluated for the buildings and underground spaces with different industry types. The results indicated that the inundation of buildings and underground spaces in densely built cities cannot be neglected in urban flood modeling.Buildings with public service attributes can have a higher flood damage degree,as compared with other types of buildings and underground spaces. 展开更多

Acoustic tweezing cytometry(ATC)is a recently developed method for cell mechanics regulation.Tar-geted microbubbles, which are attached to integrins and subsequently the actin cytoskeleton, anchor, amplify and transmit the mechanical energy in an acoustic field inside the cells, eliciting prominent cy-toskeleton contractile force increases in various cell types. We propose that a mechanochemical con-version mechanism is critical for the high efficiency of ATC to activate cell contractility responses. Our models predict key experimental observations. Moreover,we study the influences of ATC parameters(ul-trasound center frequency, pulse repetition frequency, duty cycle, and acoustic pressure),cell areas, the number of ATC stimuli, and extracellular matrix rigidity on cell contractility responses to ATC.The simu-lation results suggest that it is large molecules, rather than small ions, that facilitate global responses to the local ATC stimulation, and the incorporation of visible stress fiber bundles improves the accuracy of modeling. 展开更多

In this study, 1D and 2D shallow-water models were coupled to simulate unsteady flow in channel networks and embayment. The 1D model solved the 1D shallow-water equations (St. Venant) using the Preissmann box method and targeted long narrow reaches of the river networks, while the 2D model targeted broad channels and embayment and solved the 2D shallow-water equations using a semi-implicit scheme applied to an unstructured grid of triangular cells. The 1D and 2D models were solved simultaneously by building a matrix for the free surface elevation at every 1D junction and 2D cell center. Velocities were then computed explicitly based on the results at the previous time step and the updated water level. The originality of the scheme arose from a novel coupling method. The results showed that the coupled 1D/2D model produced identical results as the full 2D model in classical to benchmark problems with considerable savings in computational effort. Application of the model to the Pearl River Estuary in southern China showed that complex patterns of tidal wave propagation could be efficiently modeled. 展开更多

To validate the ability of full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) for studying the 2D Hubbard model near half-filling regime, the ground state energies of a 4×44×4 square lattice system with various interaction strengths are calculated. It is found that the calculated results are in good agreement with those obtained by exact diagonalization (i.e., the exact values for a given basis set) when the population of psi particles (psips) is higher than the critical population required to correctly sample the ground state wave function. In addition, the variations of the average computational time per 20 Monte Carlo cycles with the coupling strength and the number of processors are also analyzed. The calculated results show that the computational efficiency of an FCIQMC calculation is mainly affected by the total population of psips and the communication between processors. These results can provide useful references for understanding the FCIQMC algorithm, studying the ground state properties of the 2D Hubbard model for the larger system size by the FCIQMC method and using a computational budget as effectively as possible. 展开更多

Considering phase changes associated with a high-temperature molten material cooled down from the outside, this work presents an improvement of the modelling and the numerical simulation of such processes for an application pertaining to the safety of light water nuclear reactors.Postulating a core meltdown accident, the behaviour of the core melt(aka corium)into a steel vessel is of tremendous importance when evaluating the vessel integrity.Evaluating correctly the heat fluxes requires the numerical simulation of the interaction between the liquid material and its solid counterpart which forms during the solidification process, but also may melt back.To simulate this configuration,encoun-tered in various industrial applications, one considers a bi-phase model constituted by a liquid phase in contact and interaction with its solid phase. The liquid phase may solidify in presence of low energetic source, while the solid phase may melt due to an intense heat flux from the high-temperature liquid. In the frame of the in-house legacy code, several simplifying assumptions(0D multi-layer discretization, instantaneous heat transfer via a quadratic temperature profile in solids)are made for the modelling of such phase changes. In the present work, these shortcomings are illustrated and further overcome by solving a 2D heat conduction model in the solid by a mixed Raviart-Thomas finite element method coupled to the liquid phase due to heat and mass exchanges through Stefan condition. The liquid phase is modeled with a 0D multi-layer approach. The 0D-liquid and 2D-solid mod-els are coupled by a Stefan like phase change interface model.Several sanity checks are performed to assess the validity of the approach on 1D and 2D academical configurations for which exact or reference solutions are available. Then more advanced situations(genu-ine multi-dimensional phase changes and an"industrial-like scenario")are simulated to verify the appropriate behavior of the obtained coupled simulation scheme. 展开更多

In order to protect the city of New Orleans from the Mississippi River flooding, the Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS) was constructed from 1929 to 1936 to divert flood water from the river into Lake Pontchartrain and then into the Gulf of Mexico. During the BCS opening for flood release, large amounts of freshwater, nutrients, sediment, etc. were discharged into Lake Pontchartrain, and caused a lot of environmental problems. To evaluate the environmental impacts of the flood water on lake ecosystems, a two-dimensional numerical model was developed based on CCHE2D and applied to simulate the flow circulation, sediment transport and algal biomass distribution in Lake Pontchartrain. The effect of sediment concentration on the growth of algae was considered in the model. The numerical model was calibrated using field measured data provided by USGS, and then it was validated by the BCS Opening Event in 1997. The simulated results were generally in good agreement with filed data and satellite imagery. The field observation and numerical model show that during the spillway opening for flood release, the sediment concentration is very high, which greatly restricts the growth of algae, so there is no algal bloom observed in the lake. After the closure of BCS, the sediment concentration in the lake reduces gradually, and the nutrient concentration of the lake is still high. Under these conditions, numerical results and satellite imagery showed that the chlorophyll concentration was high and algal bloom might occur. 展开更多
