The flow fields surrounding two parallel moving bubbles rising from two identical orifices submerged in non-Newtonian fluid of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) solution of three different mass concentration were measure...The flow fields surrounding two parallel moving bubbles rising from two identical orifices submerged in non-Newtonian fluid of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) solution of three different mass concentration were measured experimentally by the use of particle image velocimetry (PIV). The influences of gas flowrate, solution mass concentration, orifice interval and the angle between two bubble centers line and vertical direction on the flow field surrounding bubbles were discussed respectively by analyzing the velocity vector, velocity contours as well as individual velocity components. The results show that the liquid velocity both in front of two bubbles and behind increases with gas flowrate duo to shear-thinning effect of previous bubbles, whereas decreases with the increase of CMC concentration due to the increase of drag force acting on bubbles. The effect of the orifice interval on the flow field around two moving bubbles becomes gradually obvious as the interval becomes closer. Moreover, two adjacent side-by-side bubbles repulse each other during rising, leading to the practical interval between them increased somewhat above the orifice interval. When the distance between bubbles is less than the orifice interval 10 mm, the interaction between two neighboring bubbles changed from mutual repellence to attraction with the decrease of the angle of the line of linking two bubble centers to the vertical direction.展开更多
Objectives: To measure serum and follicular resistin, steroids hormone levels in women with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) (BMI (body mass index)<25 kg/m2), to assess possible correlations of resistin to hormonal...Objectives: To measure serum and follicular resistin, steroids hormone levels in women with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) (BMI (body mass index)<25 kg/m2), to assess possible correlations of resistin to hormonal and metabolic parameters and to analyze the clinical outcomes of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) in women with PCOS and tubal infertility. Study design: We analyzed the clinical outcomes of IVF-ET in women with PCOS (BMI<25 kg/m2) and tubal infertility during the years 2002 to 2004 and compared the serum and follicular fluid resistin levels, estradiol (E2), progesterone (P), testosterone (T) levels in 20 PCOS and 20 healthy, age-matched women without PCOS during IVF-stimulated cycles. The correlations between the resistin levels and the outcomes of IVF-ET were evaluated. Results: No significant differences in resistin levels of either serum or follicular fluid between PCOS and control group were found. However, resistin levels in serum were higher than that in follicular fluid in both groups. Multiple regression analysis showed that resistin levels in serum did not correlate with BMI, estradiol, LH (luteinizing hormone) and insulin level in fasting blood. No significant correlations were found between follicular fluid reisistin levels and fertilization rate, implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate or early miscarriage rate in both PCOS and control groups. Conclusion: Our results show that resistin does not have correlation with the hormonal and metabolic parameters as well as the outcomes of IVF. These data suggest that resistin is unlikely to be a local determinant factor in steroidogenesis and growth and maturation of oocytes during IVF-ET in lean women with PCOS.展开更多

In this paper,the theoretical formula of rotatory effect in non-planar cavity is presented deducing from basic light propagating law. Based on the 8-like plane cavity,a novel non-planar structure is designed and numerically calculated. The results show that for obtaining the required rotatory angle,it just needs to adjust the structural parameters of the original 8-like plane cavity. The four-frequency-differential laser gyro which adopts the non-planar 8-like structure has the same advantages as those with the planar 8-like structure,such as the gain region locates at one leg,the position of Faraday rotator has better spatial symmetry and the coating films of the output mirror is easily designed.展开更多

For the large industrial bubble columns, the compressibility due to the pressure difference may introduce notable bubble size variation. In order to address the compressibility effect, the PBE should be reformulated and coupled with the compressible TFM. In this work, the PBE with a compressibility term was formulated from single bubble dynamics, the mean Sauter diameters predicted by the compressible TFM coupled with the PBE were compared with the analytical solutions obtained by the ideal gas law. It was proven that the mesoscale formulations presented in this work were physically consistent with the macroscale modeling. It can be used to simulate large industrial plants when the compressibility induced bubble size variation is important.展开更多
A general CFD-PBE(computational fluid dynamics-population balance equation) solver for gas–liquid poly-dispersed flows of both low and high gas volume fractions is developed in OpenFOAM(open-source field operation an...A general CFD-PBE(computational fluid dynamics-population balance equation) solver for gas–liquid poly-dispersed flows of both low and high gas volume fractions is developed in OpenFOAM(open-source field operation and manipulation) in this work. Implementation of this solver in OpenFOAM is illustrated in detail. The PBE is solved with the cell average technique. The coupling between pressure and velocity is dealt with the transient PIMPLE algorithm, which is a merged PISO-SIMPLE(pressure implicit split operator-semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equations) algorithm. Results show generally good agreement with the published experimental data, whereas the modeling precision could be improved further with more sophisticated closure models for interfacial forces, the models for the bubble-induced turbulence and those for bubble coalescence and breakage.The results also indicate that the PBE could be solved out the PIMPLE loop to save much computation time while still preserving the time information on variables. This is important for CFD-PBE modeling of many actual gas–liquid problems, which are commonly high-turbulent flows with intrinsic transient and 3 D characteristics.展开更多

Objective To determine whether the onset of acute lung injury (ALl) induces the up-regulation of pentraxin 3 (PTX3) expression in mice and whether PTX3 concentration in the biofluid can help recognizing sepsis-ind...Objective To determine whether the onset of acute lung injury (ALl) induces the up-regulation of pentraxin 3 (PTX3) expression in mice and whether PTX3 concentration in the biofluid can help recognizing sepsis-induced ALI. Methods Wild-type C57BL/6 mice (12-14 weeks old) were randomly divided into 3 groups. Mice in the group 1 (n=12) and group 2 (n=12) were instilled with lipopolysaccharide via intratracheal or intraperitoneal routes, respectively. Mice in the group 3 (n=8) were taken as blank controls. Pulmonary morphological and functional alterations were measured to determine the presence of experimental ALl. PTX3 expression in the lung was quantified at both protein and mRNA levels. PTX3 protein concentration in blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was measured to evaluate its ability to diagnose sepsis-induced ALI by computing area under receiver operator characteristic curve (AUROCC). Results ALl was commonly confirmed in the group 1 but never in the other groups. PTX3 expression was up-regulated indiscriminately among lipopolysaccharide-challenged mice. PTX3 protein concentration in the biofluid was unable to diagnose sepsis-induced ALl evidenced by its small AUROCC. PTX3 concentration in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid did not correlate with that in serum. Conclusions Lipopolysaccharide challenges induced PTX3 expression in mice regardless of the presence ofALI. PTX3 may act as an indicator of inflammatory response instead of organ injury per se.展开更多

The cold compaction load was varied in the range of 60 to 75 MPa to obtain the foams of different relative densities. A function of cold compaction load between crushing tendency of cenosphere and relative density was investigated. The compressive deformation behavior of these foams was studied, and empirical relationships among plateau stress, elastic modulus, densification strains and energy absorption are formulated considering their practical significance. The performance indices of the developed foam in comparison with dense titanium were studied and it was found that the foam is superior alternative to titanium for engineering applications.展开更多

Methods Lipopolysaccharide(LPS, 10 mg/kg) injection or cecal ligation an...Objective To explore whether the amount of lipocalin-2 in the biofluid could reflect the onset of sepsis-induced acute lung injury(ALI) in mice. Methods Lipopolysaccharide(LPS, 10 mg/kg) injection or cecal ligation and puncture(CLP) was performed to induce severe sepsis and ALI in C57 BL/6 male mice randomly divided into 5 groups(n=10 in each group): group A(intraperitoneal LPS injection), group B(intravenous LPS injection via tail vein), group C(CLP with 25% of the cecum ligated), group D(CLP with 75% of the cecum ligated), and the control group(6 sham-operation controls plus 4 saline controls). All the mice received volume resuscitation. Measurements of pulmonary morphological and functional alterations were used to identify the presence of experimental ALI. The expressions of lipocalin-2 and interleukin(IL)-6 in serum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF), and lung tissue were quantified at both protein and mRNA levels. The overall abilities of lipocalin-2 and IL-6 tests to diagnose sepsis-induced ALI were evaluated by generating receiver operator characteristic curves(ROC) and computing area under curve(AUC). Results In both group B and group D, most of the "main features" of experimental ALI were reproduced in mice, while group A and group C showed septic syndrome without definite evidence for the presence of ALI. Compared with septic mice without ALI(group A+group C), lipocalin-2 protein expression in septic mice with ALI(group B+group D) was significantly up-regulated in BALF(P<0.01) and in serum(P<0.01), and mRNA expression boosted in lung tissues(all P<0.05). Lipocalin-2 tests performed better than IL-6 tests in recognizing sepsis-induced ALI cases, evidenced by the larger AUC of the former(BALF tests, 0.8800 versus 0.6625; serum tests, 0.8500 versus 0.7000). Using a dual cutoff system to diagnose sepsis-induced ALI, BALF lipocalin-2 test exhibited the highest positive likelihood ratio(13.000) and the lowest negative likelihood ratio(0.077) among the tests of lipocalin-2 and IL-6 in blood and BALF. A statistically significant correlation was found between lipocalin-2 concentration in BALF and that in serum(Spearman r=0.8803,P<0.0001). Conclusions Lipocalin-2 expression is significantly up-regulated in septic ALI mice compared with those without ALI. Lipocalin-2 tests with a dual cutoff system could be an effective tool in distinguishing experimental ALI cases.展开更多
AIM:To evaluate the effects of genipin cross-linking on bullous keratopathy in rabbits.METHODS:Nine female New Zealand white rabbits with bullous keratopathy were used as an experimental model.They were randomized int...AIM:To evaluate the effects of genipin cross-linking on bullous keratopathy in rabbits.METHODS:Nine female New Zealand white rabbits with bullous keratopathy were used as an experimental model.They were randomized into three groups.Corneas in Group A(treatment group,n=3)were immersed in 0.25%genipin at 24℃for 40min;those in Group B(control group,n=3)were immersed in 0.9%sodium chloride solution at 24℃for 40min;and those in Group C(blank control group,n=3)received no treatment.Follow-up examinations were performed within 2wk after treatment,including slit-lamp microscopy,central corneal thickness(CCT),evaluations of body weight and stress responses,histopathological analyses,and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling(TUNEL)for detecting stromal cell apoptosis.RESULTS:Compared to Groups B and C,remission of corneal edema,corneal healing,disappearance of epithelial bullae,a significant decrease in CCT(P〈0.05),and a significant increase in body weight(P〈0.05)were found in Group A.Animals in Group A became more active and showed less aggression and violent resistance behavior.More regular and dense arrangement of collagen fibers in the corneal stroma and formation of blue strips of cross-linking products were observed in Group A.Cell apoptosis occasionally occurred in the corneal stroma of Group A,while no cell apoptosis was observed in Groups B and C.CONCLUSION:Genipin cross-linking treatment for bullous keratopathy in rabbits results in remission of corneal edema and relief of pain.We hypothesize that genipin cross-linking strengthens collagen fibers in corneal stroma to avoid the formation of corneal edema and bullae.展开更多

A canine m...Objective: To explore the effect of seawater immersion on serum osmotic pressure and electrolytes balance following chest trauma in dogs. Methods: Twenty five healthy adult dogs were used in the experiment. A canine model of right open pneumothorax was established by chest puncturing on all animals. Animals were divided into three groups: a control group (n=10) with chest trauma without any immersion; a seawater group (n=10) immersed in seawater after chest trauma and a normal saline group (n=5) immersed in normal saline solution following chest trauma. Blood samples were taken at different time intervals to determine plasma osmotic pressure and electrolytes. The hemodynamic changes were also recorded. Results: Mortality in the seawater group was much higher than that of the control group and the normal saline group. The mean survival time in the seawater group lasted only 45 minutes, while in the control group and the normal saline group the average survival time was more than 4 hours (P< 0.01 ). One of the most important causes of death was hypernatremia and high osmolality. Severe electrolytes imbalance was observed in seawater group. Hypernatremia and high osmolality were the most significant factors of high mortality in the seawater group. Conclusions: Seawater immersion after chest trauma appears to be associated with severe electrolyte imbalance as well as high osmotic pressure. These may be the risk factors leading to fatal outcome.展开更多

文摘Objective To explore whether the amount of lipocalin-2 in the biofluid could reflect the onset of sepsis-induced acute lung injury(ALI) in mice. Methods Lipopolysaccharide(LPS, 10 mg/kg) injection or cecal ligation and puncture(CLP) was performed to induce severe sepsis and ALI in C57 BL/6 male mice randomly divided into 5 groups(n=10 in each group): group A(intraperitoneal LPS injection), group B(intravenous LPS injection via tail vein), group C(CLP with 25% of the cecum ligated), group D(CLP with 75% of the cecum ligated), and the control group(6 sham-operation controls plus 4 saline controls). All the mice received volume resuscitation. Measurements of pulmonary morphological and functional alterations were used to identify the presence of experimental ALI. The expressions of lipocalin-2 and interleukin(IL)-6 in serum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF), and lung tissue were quantified at both protein and mRNA levels. The overall abilities of lipocalin-2 and IL-6 tests to diagnose sepsis-induced ALI were evaluated by generating receiver operator characteristic curves(ROC) and computing area under curve(AUC). Results In both group B and group D, most of the "main features" of experimental ALI were reproduced in mice, while group A and group C showed septic syndrome without definite evidence for the presence of ALI. Compared with septic mice without ALI(group A+group C), lipocalin-2 protein expression in septic mice with ALI(group B+group D) was significantly up-regulated in BALF(P<0.01) and in serum(P<0.01), and mRNA expression boosted in lung tissues(all P<0.05). Lipocalin-2 tests performed better than IL-6 tests in recognizing sepsis-induced ALI cases, evidenced by the larger AUC of the former(BALF tests, 0.8800 versus 0.6625; serum tests, 0.8500 versus 0.7000). Using a dual cutoff system to diagnose sepsis-induced ALI, BALF lipocalin-2 test exhibited the highest positive likelihood ratio(13.000) and the lowest negative likelihood ratio(0.077) among the tests of lipocalin-2 and IL-6 in blood and BALF. A statistically significant correlation was found between lipocalin-2 concentration in BALF and that in serum(Spearman r=0.8803,P<0.0001). Conclusions Lipocalin-2 expression is significantly up-regulated in septic ALI mice compared with those without ALI. Lipocalin-2 tests with a dual cutoff system could be an effective tool in distinguishing experimental ALI cases.

文摘AIM:To evaluate the effects of genipin cross-linking on bullous keratopathy in rabbits.METHODS:Nine female New Zealand white rabbits with bullous keratopathy were used as an experimental model.They were randomized into three groups.Corneas in Group A(treatment group,n=3)were immersed in 0.25%genipin at 24℃for 40min;those in Group B(control group,n=3)were immersed in 0.9%sodium chloride solution at 24℃for 40min;and those in Group C(blank control group,n=3)received no treatment.Follow-up examinations were performed within 2wk after treatment,including slit-lamp microscopy,central corneal thickness(CCT),evaluations of body weight and stress responses,histopathological analyses,and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling(TUNEL)for detecting stromal cell apoptosis.RESULTS:Compared to Groups B and C,remission of corneal edema,corneal healing,disappearance of epithelial bullae,a significant decrease in CCT(P〈0.05),and a significant increase in body weight(P〈0.05)were found in Group A.Animals in Group A became more active and showed less aggression and violent resistance behavior.More regular and dense arrangement of collagen fibers in the corneal stroma and formation of blue strips of cross-linking products were observed in Group A.Cell apoptosis occasionally occurred in the corneal stroma of Group A,while no cell apoptosis was observed in Groups B and C.CONCLUSION:Genipin cross-linking treatment for bullous keratopathy in rabbits results in remission of corneal edema and relief of pain.We hypothesize that genipin cross-linking strengthens collagen fibers in corneal stroma to avoid the formation of corneal edema and bullae.
文摘Objective: To explore the effect of seawater immersion on serum osmotic pressure and electrolytes balance following chest trauma in dogs. Methods: Twenty five healthy adult dogs were used in the experiment. A canine model of right open pneumothorax was established by chest puncturing on all animals. Animals were divided into three groups: a control group (n=10) with chest trauma without any immersion; a seawater group (n=10) immersed in seawater after chest trauma and a normal saline group (n=5) immersed in normal saline solution following chest trauma. Blood samples were taken at different time intervals to determine plasma osmotic pressure and electrolytes. The hemodynamic changes were also recorded. Results: Mortality in the seawater group was much higher than that of the control group and the normal saline group. The mean survival time in the seawater group lasted only 45 minutes, while in the control group and the normal saline group the average survival time was more than 4 hours (P< 0.01 ). One of the most important causes of death was hypernatremia and high osmolality. Severe electrolytes imbalance was observed in seawater group. Hypernatremia and high osmolality were the most significant factors of high mortality in the seawater group. Conclusions: Seawater immersion after chest trauma appears to be associated with severe electrolyte imbalance as well as high osmotic pressure. These may be the risk factors leading to fatal outcome.
