Our objectives were to quantify land cover change in Ningbo and its surrounding area from 1987 to 2000 and to analyze the causative factors of the change. Using 30-m resolution Landsat TM/ETM+ data and maximum likelihood classifica- tion method, we classified the study area into six land cover types: forest, agriculture, urban, freshwater, seawater and bottomland. The research results showed that significant changes in land cover occurred in the study area, and that agriculture and urban land cover change dominated most of the land cover change and were main causes for the changes of other types with human activities, such as urbanization, industrialization, etc. being the main factor while it was not very obvious whether climatic conditions have any role in the land cover changes. Agriculture, bottomland and other nature dominated land cover types are undergoing signifi- cant changes due to industrialization and urbanization, which threaten the stabilization of the environment. The study conclusion called for finding reasonable ways to solve the problems between land cover change and land use.展开更多

The results show that the crustal thickness with an average thickness of 29. 5km in Guangdong Province and its adjacent areas ranges between 26. 8km and 33. 6kin and gradually thins from northwest to southeast. The crustal thickness in the Zhujiang Delta, western Guangdong, Nanning and Nan'ao areas is relatively thinner and ranges between 25. 0km and 28. 0km. The minimum crustal thickness is about 26km beneath Wengtian, Hainan and the Zhanjiang zone and Shangchuan Island in Guangdong. The crustal thickness in the zones of Mingxi, Fujian and Yongzhou, Hunan is thicker and varies between 31.0km and 34.0km. The distribution of Poisson's ratio in our study region ranges between 0.20 and 0. 29. Poisson's ratios in Southeast Hainan, the coastal areas of East Guangdong and West Fujian and the South Jiangxi have distinctly higher values than in others. It suggests that the various geothermal fields located in these areas have high heat flow values. The distribution of crustal thickness and Poisson's ratio has an obvious block feature and may be related to the distribution of faults and historical earthquakes.展开更多

Thus, it is essential to include wind in the numerical simulation of these phenomena. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) with high resolution and wide spatial coverage is valuable for measuring spatially inhomogeneous ocean surface wind fields. We have collected 87 ERS-2 SAR images with wind-induced streaks that cover the Cbangjiang coastal area, to verify and improve the validity of wind direction retrieval using the 2D fast Fourier transform method. We then used these wind directions as inputs to derive SAR wind speeds using the C-band model. To demonstrate the applicability of the algorithms, we validated the SAR-retrieved wind fields using QuikSCAT measurements and the atmospheric Weather Research Forecasting model. In general, we found good agreement between the datasets, indicating the reliability and applicability of SAR- retrieved algorithms under different atmospheric conditions. We investigated the main error sources of this process, and conducted sensitivity analyses to estimate the wind speed errors caused by the effect of speckle, uncertainties in wind direction, and inaccuracies in the normalized radar cross section. Finally, we used the SAR-retrieved wind fields to simulate the salinity distribution off the Changjiang estuary. The findings of this study will be valuable for wind resource assessment and the development of future numerical ocean models based on SAR images.展开更多

The results show that the Jiangsu area is a high Q value area as a whole, but the Q value differs obviously between different regions, characterized generally as high in the south and low in the north. This study focuses on 4 sub-regions where the stations are relatively dense, the tectonic features are distinguishing, and the calculation results of coda Q0 are fairly concentrated, and obtains the characteristic relationship between the Q value and frequency of the 4 regions. The region from south Jiangsu to the Yangtze River estuary and that around the Maoshan fault zone are the high Q value areas in Jiangsu; the region from central Jiangsu to the waterfront area is the low Q value area in Jiangsu Province, and the Lianyungang region in northern Jiangsu is the moderate Q value area. Comparing the tectonic activity and seismicity of the 4 different Q value sub-regions,there is a certain correlation between Q value, crustal movement and seismicity.展开更多

The result shows that the time delays of slow shear waves of the DJS station, which is not far from the epicenter and where the distribution of faults is complex near the station, are relatively larger and the polarization directions of fast shear waves are not concentrated; the predominant polarization direction of fast shear waves of WUJ station, with single fault distributed nearby, has a difference of 35° to the strike of the fault and is inconsistent with the direction of regional principal compressive stress. The predominant polarization direction of fast shear waves of SZD station with no faults nearby is in accordance with regional principal compressive stress. There is no obvious regular relationshipship between the delay time and the focal depth.展开更多
