In this paper, one practical solution to the problem for condition assessment of short and medium span bridges was discussed. A vehicle-based measurement with a public bus as part of a public transit system (called “Bus monitoring system”) has been developed to be capable of detecting damage that may affect the structural safety of a bridge from long term vibration measurement data collected while the vehicle (bus) crossed the target bridges. This paper systematically describes how the system has been developed. The bus monitoring system aims to detect the transition from the damage acceleration period, in which the structural safety of an aged bridge declines sharply, to the deterioration period by continually monitoring the bridge of interest. To evaluate the practicality of the newly developed bus monitoring system, it has been field-tested over a period of about four years by using an in-service fixed-route bus operating on a bus route in the city of Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. The verification results thus obtained are also described in this paper. This study also evaluates the sensitivity of “characteristic deflection”, which is a bridge (health) condition indicator used by the bus monitoring system, in damage detection. Sensitivity of “characteristic deflection” is verified by introducing artificial damage into a bridge that has ended its service life and is awaiting removal. As the results, it will be able to make a rational long-term health monitoring system for existing short and mediumspan bridges, and then the system helps bridge administrators to establish the rational maintenance strategies.展开更多

Therefore, evaluation and inferring the data perfectly to prevent fire related accidental risk in underground coal mining (UMC) system are very necessary. In the present article, we have proposed a novel type-2 fuzzy logic system (T2FLS) for the prediction of fire intensity and its risk assessment for risk reduction in an underground coal mine. Recently, for the observation of underground coal mines, wireless underground sensor network (WUSN) are being concerned frequently. Nakuru in the central Rift Valley of Kenya has undergone rapid urban growth in last decade. This paper focused on urban growth using multi-sensor satellite imageries and explored the potential benefits of combining data from optical sensors (Landsat, Worldview-2) with Radar sensor data from Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) data for urban land-use mapping. Landsat has sufficient spectral bands allowing for better delineation of urban green and impervious surface, Worldview-2 has a higher spatial resolution and facilitates urban growth mapping while PALSAR has higher temporal resolution compared to other operational sensors and has the capability of penetrating clouds irrespective of weather conditions and time of day, a condition prevalent in Nakuru, because it lies in a tropical area. Several classical and modern classifiers namely maximum likelihood (ML) and support vector machine (SVM) were applied for image classification and their performance assessed. The land-use data of the years 1986, 2000 and 2010 were compiled and analyzed using post classification comparison (PCC). The value of combining multi-temporal Landsat imagery and PALSAR was explored and achieved in this research. Our research illustrated that SVM algorithm yielded better results compared to ML. The integration of Landsat and ALOS PALSAR gave good results compared to when ALOS PAL- SAR was classified alone. 19.70 km2 of land changed to urban land-use from non-urban land-use between the years 2000 to 2010 indicating rapid urban growth has taken place. Land-use information is useful for the comprehensive land-use planning and an integrated management of resources to ensure sustainability of land and to achieve social Eq- uity, economic efficiency and environmental sustainability.展开更多

Among the various scientific aspects involved in the home monitoring field, we are interested in the study and the proposal of a solution allowing distributed sensor nodes to communicate with each other in an optimal way adapted to the specific application constraints. More precisely, we want to build a wireless network that consists of several short range sensor nodes exchanging data between them according to a communication protocol at MAC (Medium Access Control) level. This protocol must be able to optimize energy consumption, transmission time and loss of information. To achieve this objective, we have analyzed the advantages and the limitations of WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) technologies and communication protocols currently used in relation to the requirements of our application. Then we proposed a deterministic, adaptive and energy saving medium access method based on the IEEE 802.15.4 physical layer and a mesh topology. It ensures the message delivery time with strongly limited collision risk due to the spatial reuse of medium in the two-hop neighbourhood. This proposal was characterized by modelling and simulation using OPNET network simulator. Finally we implemented the proposed mechanisms on hardware devices and deployed a sensors network in real situation to verify the accuracy of the model and evaluate the proposal according to different test configurations.展开更多

In order to analyse the impact on the downstream river course, Jingjiang Hydrologic and Water Resources Survey Bureau of Changjiang Water Resources Commission has conducted prototype observation on the Yichang-Chenglingji river stretch. On basis of the observed data, the change in river regime and scour-sedimentation evolution and water surface profile below the dam are analysed systematically. The results show that the scouring of downstream river course mainly stretches from Yichang to Ouchikou, mainly occurring in 1980~1987; the scourring mainly takes place in the river channel and the water surface profile drops significantly in dry season, but not quite in high flood season.展开更多

Compared to standard treatment approaches such as chemo-radiation and surgery, PDT has much reduced morbidity for head and neck malignancies and is becoming an alternative treatment option. It can be used as an adjunct therapy to other treatment modalities without any additive cumulative side effects. Surface illumination can be an option for pre-malignant and early-stage malignancies while interstitial treatment is for debulking of thick tumors in the head and neck region. PDT can achieve equivalent or greater efficacy in treating head and neck malignancies, suggesting that it may be considered as a first line therapy in the future. Despite progressive development, clinical PDT needs improvement in several topics for wider acceptance including standardization of protocols that involve the same administrated light and PS doses and establishing quantitative tools for PDT dosimetry planning and response monitoring. Quantitative measures such as optical parameters, PS concentration, tissueoxygenation and blood flow are essential for accurate PDT dosimetry as well as PDT response monitoring and assessing therapy outcome. Unlike conventional imaging modalities like magnetic resonance imaging, novel optical imaging techniques can quantify PDT-related parameters without any contrast agent administration and enable real-time assessment during PDT for providing fast feedback to clinicians. Ongoing developments in optical imaging offer the promise of optimization of PDT protocols with improved outcomes.展开更多

This research addresses these challenges through the development of advanced emergency rescue systems incorporating wood-derived nanomaterials and IoT-enabled Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technologies. The use of nanocellulose which demonstrates outstanding mechanical capabilities and biodegradability alongside high resilience allowed developers to design modular rescue systems that function effectively even under challenging conditions while providing real-time failure protection. Experimental data from testing showed that the replacement system strengthened load-bearing limits by 20% while enhancing impact tolerance by 30% and decreasing lifecycle carbon footprints by 60% against conventional methods. FEA results alongside dynamic simulations established that the system maintains its strength across seismic events and thermal variations and environmental conditions. SHM systems that leverage the Internet of Things Platform revealed 95% accuracy rates in detecting anomalies while improving response speed by 30% for predictive maintenance operations. The innovative solutions support the special issue’s direction to push structural transformation through durable designs and creative materials with preventive failure solutions. The proposed solutions work together toward creating resilient infrastructure systems which resist unexpected stressors and environmental damage.展开更多

Firstly, the monitoring content and method of the large span continuous rigid frame bridge are clearly stated. Secondly, by finite element software Midas Civil, the relevant deformation values of the bridge are calculated. Thirdly, in practice, the relevant deformation values of the bridge are measured. Finally, the measured values in practice are compared with the calculated ones by the finite element software Midas Civil, finding that the former is less than the latter, and it can be concluded that the bridge is basically in the normal working condition. In this paper, the analytical research on the deformation monitoring can provide the basis for similar bridges, which has good practical significance.展开更多

Early detection of cardiac diseases and continuous supervision of clinicians can reduce the mortality rate. However, accurate detection of heart diseases in all cases and consultation of a patient for 24 hours by a doctor is not available since it requires more sapience, time and expertise. In this?study, a tentative design of a cloud-based heart disease prediction system had been proposed to detect impending heart disease using Machine learning techniques. For the accurate detection of the heart disease, an efficient machine learning technique should be used which had been derived from a distinctive analysis among several machine learning algorithms in a Java Based Open Access Data Mining Platform, WEKA. The proposed algorithm was validated using two widely used open-access database, where 10-fold cross-validation is applied in order to analyze the performance of heart disease detection. An accuracy level of 97.53% accuracy was found from the SVM algorithm along with sensitivity and specificity of 97.50% and 94.94%respectively. Moreover, to monitor the heart disease patient round-the-clock by his/her caretaker/doctor, a real-time patient monitoring system was developed and presented using Arduino, capable of sensing some real-time parameters such as body temperature, blood pressure, humidity, heartbeat. The developed system can transmit the recorded data to a central server which are updated every 10 seconds. As a result, the doctors can visualize the patient’s real-time sensor data by using the application and start live video streaming if instant medication is required. Another important feature of the proposed system was that as soon as any real-time parameter of the patient exceeds the threshold, the prescribed doctor is notified at once through GSM technology.展开更多

文摘It is well recognized that Structural Health Monitoring(SHM)reliability evaluation is a key aspect that needs to be urgently addressed to promote the wide application of SHM methods. However, the existing studies typically transfer the Non-Destructive Testing/Evaluation(NDT/E)reliability metrics to SHM without a systematic analysis of where these metrics originated.Seldom attentions are paid to the evaluation conditions which are very important to apply these metrics.Aimed at this issue,a new condition control-based Dual-Reliability Evaluation(Dual-RE)method for SHM is proposed. This new method is proposed based on a systematic analysis of the whole framework of reliability evaluation from instrument to NDT,and emphasis is paid to the evaluation condition control.Based on these analyses, considering the special online application scenario of SHM,the proposed Dual-RE method contains two key components:Integrated Sensor-based SHM-RE(IS-SHM-RE)and Critical Service Condition-based SHM-RE(CSC-SHM-RE).ISSHM-RE evaluates the reliability of integrated SHM sensor and system themselves under approximate repeatability conditions, while CSC-SHM-RE assesses SHM reliability under the dominant uncertainties during service, namely intermediate conditions. To demonstrate the Dual-RE,crack monitoring by using the Guided Wave-based-SHM(GW-SHM)on aircraft lug structures is taken as a case study. Both the crack detection and sizing performance are evaluated from accuracy and uncertainty.
文摘Based on the monitoring results of environmental quality in the sea area near the Aojiang estuary in Wenzou during 2010-2012,the present situation of environmental quality in the sea area was analyzed and evaluated. The results show that p H,DO,CODMn,petroleum, and heavy metals( Cu,Pb,Zn,Cd,Hg,As and Cr) in the sea area near the Aojiang estuary did not exceed the second-class standard of Seawater Quality Standard( GB 3097-1997),but both inorganic nitrogen and reactive phosphate in the sea area exceeded the second-class standard seriously, and the water quality of the sea area was in an eutrophic state; domestic sewage and fertilizer loss were the main sources of nitrogen and phosphorus. The standard index of most evaluation factors of sediment quality except for Zn was smaller than 1,meeting the demands of sediment quality for environmental protection.
文摘Recently land-use change has been the main concern for worldwide environment change and is being used by city and regional planners to design sustainable cities. Land-use information is useful for the comprehensive land-use planning and an integrated management of resources to ensure sustainability of land and to achieve social Eq- uity, economic efficiency and environmental sustainability.
文摘Monitoring behaviour of the elderly and the disabled living alone has become a major public health problem in our modern societies. Finally we implemented the proposed mechanisms on hardware devices and deployed a sensors network in real situation to verify the accuracy of the model and evaluate the proposal according to different test configurations.
文摘Gezhouba hydroproject was impounded and put into operation in 1981. The results show that the scouring of downstream river course mainly stretches from Yichang to Ouchikou, mainly occurring in 1980~1987; the scourring mainly takes place in the river channel and the water surface profile drops significantly in dry season, but not quite in high flood season.

文摘To examine stress redistribution phenomena in bridges subjected to varying operational conditions, this study conducts a comprehensive analysis of three years of monitoring data from a 153-m double-deck road–rail steel arch bridge. An initial statistical comparison of sensor data distributions reveals clear temporal variations in stress redistribution patterns.XGBoost(eXtreme Gradient Boosting),a gradient-boosting machine learning(ML)algorithm, was employed not only for predictive modeling but also to uncover the underlying mechanisms of stress evolution.Unlike traditional numerical models that rely on extensive assumptions and idealizations,XGBoost effectively captures nonlinear and time-varying relationships between stress states and operational/environmental factors, such as temperature, traffic load, and structural geometry. This approach allows for the identification of critical periods and conditions under which stress redistribution becomes significant. Results indicate a clear shift of stress concentrations frombeamends toward mid-span regions following the commencement of metro operations, reflecting both structural adaptation and localized overstress near arch ribs.Furthermore, the model generates robust predictions of stress evolution, demonstrating potential applications in early warning systems and fatigue risk assessment. This work represents the first application of interpretable gradient-boosting techniques to stress redistribution modeling in double-deck bridges. In addition,a Stress Redistribution Index(SRI)is proposed, derived from this monitoring study and finite-element-based transverse load distributions,to quantify temporal stress shifts between midspan and edge beams. The results provide both theoretical contributions and practical guidance for the design, inspection, and maintenance of complex bridge structures.

文摘In recent years there has been significant developments in photosensitizers(PSs), light sources and light delivery systems that have allowed decreasing the treatment time and skin phototoxicity resulting in more frequent use of photodynamic therapy(PDT) in the clinical settings. Ongoing developments in optical imaging offer the promise of optimization of PDT protocols with improved outcomes.

文摘An innovative real-time monitoring method for surrounding rock damage based on microseismic time-lapse double-difference tomography is proposed for delayed dynamic damage identification and insufficient detection of adverse geological conditions in deep-buried tunnel construction. The installation techniques for microseismic sensors were optimized by mounting sensors at bolt ends which significantly improves signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)and anti-interference capability compared to conventional borehole placement.Subsequently,a 3D wave velocity evolution model that incorporates construction-induced disturbances was established, enabling the first visualization of spatiotemporal variations in surrounding rock wave velocity. It finds significant wave velocity reduction near the tunnel face, with roof and floor damage zones extending 40–50 m;wave velocities approaching undisturbed levels at 15 m ahead of the working face and on the laterally undisturbed side;pronounced spatial asymmetry in wave velocity distribution—values on the left side exceed those on the right, with a clear stress concentration or transition zone located 10–15 m;and systematically lower velocities behind the face than in front, indicating asymmetric rock damage development. These results provide essential theoretical support and practical guidance for optimizing dynamic construction strategies, enabling real-time adjustment of support parameters, and establishing safety early warning systems in deep-buried tunnel engineering.
文摘Construction failures caused by unforeseen circumstances, such as natural disasters, environmental degradation, and structural weaknesses, present significant challenges in achieving durability, safety, and sustainability. The proposed solutions work together toward creating resilient infrastructure systems which resist unexpected stressors and environmental damage.
文摘A literature review on immune monitoring in kidney transplantation produced dozens of research articles and a multitude of promising biomarkers, all in the quest for the much sought after-but perennially elusive-"holy grail" of kidney biomarkers able to unequivocally predict acute transplant rejection vs non-rejection.Detection methodologies and study designs were many and varied.Hence the motivation for this editorial, which espouses the notion that in today's kidney transplantation milieu, the judicious use of disease classifiers tailored to specific patient immune risks may be more achievable and productive in the long run and confer a greater advantage for patient treatment than the pursuit of a single "omniscient" biomarker. In addition,we desire to direct attention toward greater scrutiny of biomarker publications and decisions to implement biomarkers in practice, standardization of methods in the development of biomarkers and consideration for adoption of "biomarker-driven" biopsies. We propose "biomarkerdriven" biopsies as an adjunctive to and/or alternative to random surveillance(protocol) biopsies or belated indication biopsies. The discovery of a single kidney transplantation biomarker would represent a major breakthrough in kidney transplantation practice, but until that occurs-if ever it does occur, other approaches offer substantial potential for unlocking prognostic, diagnostic and therapeutic options. We conclude our editorial with suggestions and recommendations for productively incorporating current biomarkers into diagnostic algorithms and for testing future biomarkers of acute rejection in kidney transplantation.
文摘Based on a large span continuous rigid frame bridge in Chongqing of China, the main pier vertical displacement and deviation, the bridge deck alignment and the expansion joint deformation are analytically researched during operation. In this paper, the analytical research on the deformation monitoring can provide the basis for similar bridges, which has good practical significance.
文摘Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death worldwide over the last few decades in the developed as well as underdeveloped and developing countries. Another important feature of the proposed system was that as soon as any real-time parameter of the patient exceeds the threshold, the prescribed doctor is notified at once through GSM technology.
