Experiments were carried out with bypass-current MIG welding–brazing of magnesium alloy to galvanized steel to investigate the effect of heat input on the microstructure and mechanical properties of lap joints. Experimental results indicated that the joint efficiency tended to increase at first and then to reduce with the increase of heat input. The joint efficiency reached its maximum of about 70% when the heat input was 155 J/mm. The metallurgical bonding between magnesium alloy and steel was a thin continuous reaction layer, and the intermetallic compound layer consisted of Mg–Zn and slight Fe–Al phases. It is concluded that bypass-current MIG welding–brazing is a stable welding process, which can be used to achieve defect-free joining of magnesium alloy to steel with good weld appearances. 展开更多

The low cycle fatigue(LCF) tests were carried out using symmetrical cyclic loading under total strain amplitude control conditions. The present paper is devoted to investigating the cyclic deformation response of Ti–6Al–4V titanium and the electron-beam-welded(EBW) joint in the following aspects,i.e.,cyclic deformation behavior, fatigue life and fatigue fracture behavior. The results show that the softening of the joint is significant at larger strain ranges, while not obvious at smaller strain ranges. The joint shows shorter fatigue life at larger strain ranges and equivalent fatigue life at smaller strain ranges compared with Ti–6Al–4V base metal.A fatigue crack of the joint not only originates at the surface or subsurface, but also at defects in the fusion zone(FZ).The crack propagation zone of Ti–6Al–4V base metal shows ductile fracture mechanism, while the joint shows brittle fracture mechanism. In all the fatigue fracture zones many dimples appear, showing the typical ductile fracture. 展开更多

In this paper, two types of copper-aluminum heterogeneous electrode plates are stacked and the finite element analysis(FEA)models of two different laser welding conditions are built by using SYSWELD welding simulation software to calculate the depth of the welding bead and the temperature distribution of the welding surface. Then, the residual stress analysis data of the welded area are exported and the residual stress is applied to the welded specimen for CAE analysis to ensure that the welding bonding strength meets the design target of a shear force of 500 N or higher. The copper-aluminum laser-stacking simulation technique in this paper can be applied to the manufacturing of copper-aluminum heterogeneous laser-welded electrodes and series-connected electrodes of automotive lithium-ion power battery modules, providing an effective analysis method for welding bonding-strength. 展开更多

Friction stir welding (FSW) and stationary shoulder friction stir welding (SSFSW) were carried out for the butt joining of dissimilar AA2024-T3 and AA7050-T7651 aluminium alloys with thicknesses of 2 mm. A comparison between the two processes was performed by varying the welding speed while keeping the rotational speed constant, Through the analysis of the force and torque produced during welding and a simple analytical model, it was possible to show that in SSFSW there is more effective coupling with the tool and the heat produced is more efficiently distributed. This process decreases both the welding area and the diffusion at the interface of the two alloys compared with FSW. The minimum microhardness occurred at the advancing side (AS) at the interface between the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and the stir zone (SZ) in both processes, although the decrease was more gradual in SSFSW. This interface is also where all specimens failed for both welding technologies. An increase in tensile strength was measured in SSFSW compared with standard FSW. Furthermore, it was possible to establish the mechanical performance of the material in the fracture zone using digital image correlation. 展开更多

The utilization of pressure vessels in aerospace applications is manifold. In this work, fnite element analysis(FEA)has been carried out using ANSYS software package with 2D axisymmetric model to access the failure pressure of cylindrical pressure vessel made of ASTM A36 carbon steel having weld-induced residual stresses. To fnd out the effect of residual stresses on failure pressure, frst an elasto-plastic analysis is performed to fnd out the failure pressure of pressure vessel not having residual stresses. Then a thermo-mechanical fnite element analysis is performed to assess the residual stresses developed in the pressure vessel during welding. Finally one more elasto-plastic analysis is performed to assess the effect of residual stresses on failure pressure of the pressure vessel having residual stresses. This analysis indicates reduction in the failure pressure due to unfavorable residual stresses. 展开更多
