A variable nozzle turbocharger (VNT) was applied to a 2.2-liter L4 natural gas engine, and a VNT control system was designed to operate it.Based on VNT matching test results,a VNT control strategy was studied,in which VNT adjustment is carried out through pre-calibrated VNT handling rod position, combined with a closed-loop target boost pressure feedback using proportional-integral-derivative(PID) algorithm.Experimental results showed that the VNT control system presented in this thesis can lead to optimized performance of VNT,increase engine volumetric efficiency over a wide speed range, improve engine dynamic characteristics and upgrade economic performance. 展开更多

A design method was developed to specify the profile of the continuously variable Mach-number nozzle for the supersonic wind tunnel. The controllable contour design technique was applied to obtaining the original nozzle profile, while other Machnumbers were derived from the transformation of the original profile. A design scheme, covering a Mach-number range of3.0<Ma<4.0, was shown to illustrate the present design technique. To fully validate the present design method, computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analyses were carried out to study the flow quality in the test area of the nozzle. The computed results indicate that exit uniform flow is obtained with 1.19% of the maximal Mach-number deviation at the nozzle exit. The present design method achieves the continuously variable Mach-number flow during a wind tunnel running. 展开更多

Variable nozzle turbine (VNT) has become a popular variable geometry turbine (VGT) technology for the diesel engine application. Nozzle clearance, which can't be avoided on the hub and shroud side of the VNT turbine due to the pivoting stators, can lead to turbine performance deterioration. However, its mechanism is still not clear. In this paper, numerical investigation, which is validated by experiment, is carried out to study the mechanism of the nozzle clearance's effect on the turbine performance. Firstly, performance of the mixed flow turbine with fixed nozzle clearances tested on flow bench. Performance of the tested turbine with the same nozzle clearance is numerically simulated. The numerical result agrees well with the test data, which proves correct of the numerical method. Then the turbine performance with different nozzle clearances is numerically analyzed. The research showed that with nozzle clearance, flow loss in the nozzle increases at first and it reaches the maximum value when the clearance ratio is 5%. Flow at the exit of the nozzle becomes less uniform with nozzle clearance. The negative incidence angle of the rotor also increases with nozzle clearance and leads to more incidence angle loss in the rotor. The low energy fluid formed in the nozzle due to the nozzle clearance migrates from hub to shroud side in the rotor, which is another main reason for the rotor's performance degradation. The present research exposed the mechanism of the dramatically decrease of the turbine performance with nozzle clearance: (a) The loss associated with the nozzle leakage increases with the nozzle clearance; (b) The flow loss grows up quickly in the rotor due to the incidence angle loss and migration of the low energy fluid from hub to shroud side. 展开更多

It has been well known that nozzle end-clearances in a Variable Nozzle Turbine(VNT)are unfavorable for aerodynamic performance, especially at small openings, and efforts to further decrease size of the clearances are very hard due to thermal expansion. In this paper, both the different sizes of nozzle end-clearances and the various ratios of their distribution at the hub and shroud sides were modelled and investigated by performing 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) and Finite Element Analysis(FEA) simulations with a code of transferring the aerodynamic pressure from the CFD results to the FEA calculations. It was found that increasing the size of the nozzle end-clearances divided equally at the hub and shroud sides deteriorates turbine efficiency and turbine wheel reliability, yet increases turbine flow capacity. And, when the total nozzle endclearances remain the same, varying nozzle end-clearances' distribution at the hub and shroud sides not only shifts operation point of a VNT turbine, but also affects the turbine wheel vibration stress.Compared with nozzle hub clearance, the shroud clearance is more sensitive to both aerodynamic performance and reliability of a VNT turbine. Consequently, a possibility is put forward to improve VNT turbine efficiency meanwhile decrease vibration stress by optimizing nozzle end-clearances' distribution. 展开更多

Extensive experimental studies are performed using force sensors to measure actuating forces of nozzle ring devices of variable nozzle turbines. Torques from pneumatic action applied onto axles of nozzle vanes have been calculated. Test results obtained through repeated experiments are quite congruent, confirming the effectiveness of this simple method. Results have indicated that, with a fixed opening angle of guide vane, pneumatic torque increases with mass flow of air jet in the turbine; moreover, under the same mass flow rate, torque decreases with reducing opening angle, even possibly change direction down to negative. The results have also provided a modus operandi for designing nozzle-adjusting devices as well as validation data for numerical study on changes of pneumatic torque onto guide vanes under full engine operating conditions. 展开更多

Low pressure ratio fans of modern civil turbofans suffer from reduced stall margin in the take-off operating line and at part-speed,requiring variable geometry devices.Variable area nozzles(VAN)are one of the investigated solutions to control engine operating conditions throughout the mission. In this paper,we present a multi-fidelity modelling approach for an ultra-high bypass ratio turbofan engine with a VAN,combining a zero-dimensional thermody-namic cycle simulator using a realistic fan map with two-and three-dimensional detailed computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations for internal/external flow coupling.By adopting a novel algorithm to match the cycle conditions to the CFD solutions, the propulsive performance of the turbofan is analysed in a reference aircraft mission. The numerical method captures the effect on thrust generation and nacelle drag, providing a more reliable estimation of the impact of VAN on engine operation and efficiency.Low-speed mission points are confirmed to be those that benefit the most from an enlarged fan nozzle area, with a possible improvement of 3%in terms of thrust and specific fuel consumption at take-off and approach using a 10%larger area, similarly predicted by both 2D and 3D models.A preliminary acous-tic evaluation based on semi-empirical noise models indicates a modest effect on noise emis-sions,with up to 1 dB reduction in microphone signature at the sideline for a nozzle area increased by 10%. 展开更多

This paper investigated the effects of variable jetting nozzle angles on the cross-flow suppression and heat transfer enhancement of swirl cooling in gas turbine leading edge. The swirl chamber with vertical jet nozzles was set as the baseline, and its flow fields and heat transfer characteristics were analyzed by 3D steady state Reynolds-averaged numerical methods to reveal the mechanism of cross-flow weakening the downstream jets and heat transfer. On this basis, the flow structure on different cross sections and heat transfer characteristics of swirl chamber with variable jetting nozzle angels were compared with the baseline swirl chamber. The results indicated that for the baseline swirl chamber the circumferential velocity gradually decreased and the axial velocity gradually increased, and the cross-flow gradually formed. The cross-flow deflected the downstream jets and drawn them to the center of the chamber, thus weakening the heat transfer. For swirl chamber with variable jetting nozzle angles, the air axial velocity is axial upstream, opposite to the mainstream, so that the impact effects of cross-flow on the jets were reduced, and the heat transfer was enhanced. Furthermore, with the increase of axial velocity along the swirl chamber, the jetting nozzle angle also gradually increased, as well as the effect of cross-flow suppression, which formed a relative balance. For all swirl chambers with variable jet nozzle angles, the thermal performance factors were all larger than 1, which indicated the heat transfer was enhanced with less friction increment. 展开更多
