Dual-axis versus Single-axis Excited Constant and Variable Speed Electric Generator and Synchronous Condenser Systems:A Review with Perspective

Modern/distributed electric energy systems,with ever larger penetration of renewable(photovoltaic,wind,wave,and hydro)energy sources and time-variable outputs,are in need of stronger/higher frequency and alternating current(AC)(direct current(DC))voltage control.In fact,faster and more stable active and reactive power in the presence of frequency and voltage sags and swells is needed.Power electronics-controlled variable speed generators do not have enough energy storage(inertia)for the scope(static synchronous compensators(STATCOMs)included).This is because power electronics tends to decouple the generator from the power system.While virtual inertia control in doubly fed induction generators(DFIGs)offers a partial solution to these problems,a more robust and comprehensive framework is required for advanced grid support.This is how,by extending the dual-excitation principles,the dualaxis excited electric synchronous generators(DE-SG)provide superior flexibility in two variants summarized here:as a multifunctional DFIG and dual-axis vs.single-axis excited synchronous generator(SG),and as a synchronous condenser(SC),with dual DC and AC excitation(as a no-load DFIG with inertia wheel),where variable speed is used to accelerate/decelerate the SC and thus provide additional assistance in frequency stabilization.These solutions,good for short-time transients,are not meant,however,to replace the large bidirectional energy storage systems(pump-hydro,hydrogen,batteries,etc.)which are crucial for the daily inherent variations of output energy in modern power systems with multiple power sources.The present paper offers a summary of techniques used in the dual-axis excited vs.single-axis excited SGs(SE-SGs),and SCs topologies,modeling,and control for better stability in modern multiple-source energy systems.This survey includes multiple case studies to shed light on prominent methods. 展开更多

Comparison of Electrically Excited Synchronous Machines Using Copper and Aluminum Windings in Stator and Rotor

In this paper,electrically excited synchronous machines(EESMs)using copper(Cu)and aluminum(Al)windings are compared for the feasibility of replacing Cu windings with Al windings in electric vehicle(EV)applications since Al windings have lower mass density and cost per weight,but higher resistivity and lower thermal conductivity than Cu windings.The EESMs with four winding configurations are optimized with an electromagnetic-thermal co-optimization method.The optimized EESM with only Cu windings is considered as the baseline in this study.Results show that the EESM with stator-Cu/rotor-Al windings has the least torque reduction(12.1%)compared to the baseline among the three EESMs with Al windings and the highest torque mass density among all EESMs.Meanwhile,although the new European driving cycle efficiency of the stator-Cu/rotor-Al EESM is 1.8%lower than that of the baseline,the torque per cost is 71%higher,and the maximum rotor mechanical stress is 8%lower.Therefore,the EESMs with stator-Cu/rotor-Al windings are prospective substitutions of those with only Cu windings for EV applications considering the trade-off between performance and cost. 展开更多

Virtual Synchronous Generator Control Strategy Based on Parameter Self-Tuning

With the increasing integration of renewable energy,microgrids are increasingly facing stability challenges,primarily due to the lack of inherent inertia in inverter-dominated systems,which is traditionally provided by synchronous generators.To address this critical issue,Virtual Synchronous Generator(VSG)technology has emerged as a highly promising solution by emulating the inertia and damping characteristics of conventional synchronous generators.To enhance the operational efficiency of virtual synchronous generators(VSGs),this study employs smallsignal modeling analysis,root locus methods,and synchronous generator power-angle characteristic analysis to comprehensively evaluate how virtual inertia and damping coefficients affect frequency stability and power output during transient processes.Based on these analyses,an adaptive control strategy is proposed:increasing the virtual inertia when the rotor angular velocity undergoes rapid changes,while strengthening the damping coefficient when the speed deviation exceeds a certain threshold to suppress angular velocity oscillations.To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method,a grid-connected VSG simulation platform was developed inMATLAB/Simulink.Comparative simulations demonstrate that the proposed adaptive control strategy outperforms conventional VSGmethods by significantly reducing grid frequency deviations and shortening active power response time during active power command changes and load disturbances.This approach enhances microgrid stability and dynamic performance,confirming its viability for renewable-dominant power systems.Future work should focus on experimental validation and real-world parameter optimization,while further exploring the strategy’s effectiveness in improvingVSG low-voltage ride-through(LVRT)capability and power-sharing applications in multi-parallel configurations. 展开更多

Owing to the multi-degree-of-freedom characteristics and inherent fault-tolerant capacity,six-phase motors have been widely adopted in high-power applications,such as electric vehicle propulsion and aerospace systems.This paper presents the fault-tolerant control strategy of symmetrical six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor(SSPMSM)under an isolated neutral point topology and proposes a fault diagnosis scheme based on joint diagnosis of multiple variables.First,two mathematical models of SSPMSM and their relationship are established.Subsequently,the current vectors in the torque subspace and harmonic subspace of the two winding sets under fault conditions are analyzed,and the cause of post-fault torque ripple is explained as resulting from controller conflict.In addition,a multivariate fault diagnosis scheme based on voltage threshold in the x-y subspace and current trajectory characteristics in theα-βsubspace is proposed to enhance the diagnostic accuracy.Finally,the feasibility and stability of the proposed control and diagnosis methods are verified by experiments. 展开更多

Propelled by the rise of artificial intelligence,cloud services,and data center applications,next-generation,low-power,local-oscillator-less,digital signal processing(DSP)-free,and short-reach coherent optical communication has evolved into an increasingly prominent area of research in recent years.Here,we demonstrate DSP-free coherent optical transmission by analog signal processing in frequency synchronous optical network(FSON)architecture,which supports polarization multiplexing and higher-order modulation formats.The FSON architecture that allows the numerous laser sources of optical transceivers within a data center can be quasi-synchronized by means of a tree-distributed homology architecture.In conjunction with our proposed pilot-tone assisted Costas loop for an analog coherent receiver,we achieve a record dual-polarization 224-Gb/s 16-QAM 5-km mismatch transmission with reset-free carrier phase recovery in the optical domain.Our proposed DSP-free analog coherent detection system based on the FSON makes it a promising solution for next-generation,low-power,and high-capacity coherent data center interconnects. 展开更多

Research on adaptive speed control strategy of permanent magnet synchronous motor based on RBF-PID

Permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM),known for their compact size and high-power density,is widely used in fields such as electric vehicles and servo drives.However,traditional PID control methods for PMSM cannot dynamically adjust parameters according to varying operating conditions.To address this issue,this paper proposes a PID control method based on a radial basis function(RBF)neural network,which adaptively tunes the PID controller parameters.First,an offline RBF neural network with optimal structural parameters is trained using the current and speed data of the PMSM,and then employed to construct the RBF-PID controller.During online training,the Jacobian information calculated via the RBF neural network is used to adaptively adjust the PID parameters.Simultaneously,the structural parameters of the RBF network are updated in reverse based on the error between the predicted and reference speed values.Finally,numerical simulations and experiments in the context of electric vehicle drive control show that the maximum speed errors of the SMC controller and the RBF-PID controller are 1.97 km/h and 0.17 km/h,respectively.Moreover,the RBF-PID controller outperforms both the SMC and traditional PID controllers in handling sudden speed changes. 展开更多

This study investigates chaotic synchronization via field-coupled nonlinear circuits, achieving both electrical synchronization and energy balance. The driving mechanism biomimetically parallels neuromuscular signal transduction, where synchronized neuronal firing induces coordinated muscle contractions that produce macroscopic movement. We implement a Chua circuit-driven robotic arm with tunable periodic/chaotic oscillations through parameter modulation and external current injection. Bifurcation analysis maps oscillation modes under varying external stimuli. Inductive coupling between two systems with distinct initial conditions facilitates magnetic energy transfer, optimized by an energy balance criterion. A bio-inspired exponential gain method dynamically regulates the coupling strength to optimize the energy transfer efficiency.The effects of ambient electromagnetic noise on synchronization are systematically quantified. The results indicate electrically modulatable robotic arm dynamics, with the coupled systems achieving autonomous rapid synchronization. Despite noise-induced desynchronization, inter-system errors rapidly decay and stabilize within bounded limits, confirming robust stability. 展开更多

Dear Editor,This letter deals with the controller synthesis problem of networked Takagi-Sugeno(T-S)fuzzy systems.Due to the introduction of network communications,the same premise is no longer shared by fuzzy plants and fuzzy controllers.This makes the classic parallel distribution compensation(PDC)control infeasible.To overcome this situation,a novel method for reconstructing the membership functions'grades is proposed,which synchronizes the time scales.Then,the membership function dependent method is adopted to introduce asynchronous errors and detailed membership function information.For the event-triggered control strategy,a series of robust H∞stable conditions in LMI form are derived.Finally,a simulation of a practical system is used to demonstrate the method proposed in this letter can reduce conservatism. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Cardiac myxoma is a benign neoplasm and one of the most common types of primary cardiac tumors.Synchronous cardiac myxoma and other malignancies are extremely rare,and only limited cases have been reported.CASE SUMMARY We describe a young patient with newly diagnosed locally advanced laryngeal cancer,with a synchronous cardiac tumor detected on staging scans.An echocar-diogram showed the typical appearance of myxoma in the left atrium.Early cardiac surgery was performed in view of its obstructive features and post cardiac surgery recovery was uneventful.The patient was scheduled for subsequent oncological treatment for the laryngeal cancer.However,due to rapid progression of the advanced laryngeal malignancy,he was placed on supportive care.CONCLUSION To our knowledge,this is the first reported case of synchronous cardiac myxoma with laryngeal malignancy.Individualized treatment strategy should be adopted to manage synchronous tumors in a multidisciplinary approach.The most life-threatening condition needs be treated first.Single resection,staged operations or simultaneous resection of both tumors have been reported with good outcomes. 展开更多

Trajectory control strategy for multi-tool synchronous electrochemical machining of blisk channels

The blisk is a core component of an aero-engine,and electrochemical machining(ECM)is the primary method for its manufacture.Among several ECM methods for blisks,multi-tool synchronous machining is the most efficient and advantageous for machining channels.The allowance distribution of the blank after blisk channel machining directly influences the blade profile accuracy.This paper proposes a trajectory control strategy to homogenize the allowance distribution of the blisk channel in multi-tool ECM.The strategy includes the design of the three-dimensional space motion of the tool and blisk,as well as the regulated feed speed.The structural characteristics of the blisk channel and the principle of ECM allow for designing and optimizing the multidimensional trajectory.The electric field simulations elucidate the influence law of the three-axis feed speed on the side gap.An algorithm is adopted to iteratively optimize the speeds for different positions to realize multi-dimensional motion control and allowance homogenization.The proposed trajectory control strategy is applied to ECM experiments for the blisk channel.Compared with the constant feed speed mode,the regulated speed strategy reduces the maximum allowance difference between the convex(CV)profiles by 36.18%and that between the concave(CC)profiles by 37.73%.Subsequently,the one-time ECM of eight blisk channels was successfully realized.The average time for a single channel was 12.5 min,significantly improving the machining efficiency.In conclusion,the proposed method is effective and can be extended for synchronously machining various blisk types with twisted channels. 展开更多

This study presents an emergency control method for sub-synchronous oscillations in wind power gridconnected systems based on transfer learning,addressing the issue of insufficient generalization ability of traditional methods in complex real-world scenarios.By combining deep reinforcement learning with a transfer learning framework,cross-scenario knowledge transfer is achieved,significantly enhancing the adaptability of the control strategy.First,a sub-synchronous oscillation emergency control model for the wind power grid integration system is constructed under fixed scenarios based on deep reinforcement learning.A reward evaluation system based on the active power oscillation pattern of the system is proposed,introducing penalty functions for the number of machine-shedding rounds and the number of machines shed.This avoids the economic losses and grid security risks caused by the excessive one-time shedding of wind turbines.Furthermore,transfer learning is introduced into model training to enhance the model’s generalization capability in dealing with complex scenarios of actual wind power grid integration systems.By introducing the Maximum Mean Discrepancy(MMD)algorithm to calculate the distribution differences between source data and target data,the online decision-making reliability of the emergency control model is improved.Finally,the effectiveness of the proposed emergency control method for multi-scenario sub-synchronous oscillation in wind power grid integration systems based on transfer learning is analyzed using the New England 39-bus system. 展开更多

Laser-directed energy deposition(LDED)technology has demonstrated great potential for the rapid and integrated fabrication of nickel-based superalloy components.The plastic deformation-assisted method is crucial for achieving grain refinement and microstructural homogeneity in LDED-fabricated superalloys.However,existing methods suffer from uniformity constraints owing to their high deformation resistance,which significantly limits their application in load-bearing components.To address these issues,a synchronous-hot-forging-assisted(SHFA)LDED additive manufacturing method was proposed,and its effects on the macroscopic morphology,microstructure,and mechanical properties of GH4169 nickel-based alloy specimens were systematically compared.The results demonstrated up to 30.1%average plastic deformation in hot-forging components while maintaining good surface flatness.The synergistic effect of dislocation accumulation and dynamic recrystallization during hot forging enables dramatic grain refinement,reducing the average grain size by 89.1%(from 168.5μm to 18.4μm)while weakening texture intensity from 15.31 to 2.15,ultimately promoting equiaxed grain formation.The pores of hot-forging components changed from fine round to flat,the porosity decreased from 0.264%to 0.089%,and the densification level was significantly improved.With the increase in the synchronous hot-forging force,the average ultimate tensile strength of hot-forging components can reach 1175.1 MPa,while the anisotropy difference is gradually weakened.The SHFA-LDED process not only achieves excellent grain refinement and microstructure homogenization but also enhances mechanical properties,providing a new technical path for the additive manufacturing of high-performance nickel-based superalloy components. 展开更多

Chemical functionalization of graphene is a topic of paramount importance to broaden its applications in chemistry,physics,and biological science but remains a great challenge due to its low chemical activity and poor dispersion.Here,we report a strategy for the photosynergetic electrochemical functionalization of graphene(EFG).By using chloride ion(Cl^(-))as the intercalation anions and co-reactants,the electrogenerated radicals confined in the expanded graphite layers enable efficient radical addition reaction,thus grasping crystallineperfect EFG.We found that the ultraviolet irradiation and applied voltage have increased the surface/interface concentration of Cl,thus boosting the functionalization of graphene.Theoretical calculation and experimental results verified the oxygen evolution reaction(OER)on EFG has been improved by regulating the doping of chlorine atoms.In addition,the reduced interlayer distance and enhanced electrostatic repulsion near the basal plane endow the fabricated EFG-based membrane with high salt retention.This work highlights a method for the in situ functionalization of graphene and the subsequent applications in OER and water desalination. 展开更多

We designed and investigated a passive synchronized mode-locked fiber laser.The device utilizes a dual-cavity structure driven by the nonlinear polarization rotation(NPR)mechanism.Stable mode-locking is attained by synergistically controlling gain,polarization state,and optical path length in two symmetric sub-cavities.Experiments proved that repetition rate of the sub-cavities can be adjusted via the time delay line(TDL)to achieve synchronized mode-locking.The system stably generates multi-wavelength pulses at a single repetition frequency,evidenced by multiple spectral peaks and equidistant pulse sequences.These findings facilitate the development of high-performance multi-wavelength ultrashort pulse sources,crucial for optical communications,spectral analysis,and remote sensing. 展开更多

Lip synchronization serves as a core technology for enabling natural interactions in digital virtual humans.However,it faces challenges such as insufficient dynamic correspondence between speech and lip movements and inadequate modeling of image details.To address these limitations,a comprehensively optimized lip synchronization framework extending the Wav2Lip architecture was proposed in this study.Firstly,based on the Wav2Lip model,a facial region extraction strategy using facial keypoints was designed,which effectively enhances the robustness of facial alignment during lip synchronization for digital virtual humans.Then,a cross-modal attention fusion module between visual and speech features was introduced to improve cross-modal information fusion,and a dynamic receptive field convolution module was developed in the generation branch to enhance the modeling performance of the lip region.Finally,experiments were conducted on the VFHQ dataset.The proposed method was compared with Wav2Lip,VideoRetalking,and DI-Net models,and its performance was evaluated using three metrics:LSE-C,CSIM,and FID.Experimental results showed that the proposed method achieves significant improvements in synchronization accuracy and image fidelity,providing an efficient and feasible solution for lip-synthesis tasks of digital virtual humans. 展开更多

Owing to the lack of matching commercial welding wires,the development of wire arc additive manufacturing(WAAM)for most aluminum alloys is hindered.A wire-powder synchronous arc additive manufacturing(WPAAM)was proposed to prepare the target Al-Si-Mg aluminum alloy.Based on the synchronous deposition of AlSi_(12) wire and pure Mg powder,the deposition width of the WPAAMed thin-wall was increased by 61% compared with that of WAAMed thin-wall using AlSi_(12) wire,and the machining allowance was reduced by 81%.The added Mg powder benefited to form refined equiaxed grains,and reduced the average grain size of the WPAAMed thin-wall to 47.1μm,showing a decrease of 23.8% relatively to that of the WAAMed thin-wall.Besides,Mg reacted with Si to form Mg_(2)Si strengthening phases.The mechanical properties tests showed that the ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the WPAAMed thin-wall increased up to 174.5 MPa and 4.1%,reaching 92% and 60% those of the WAAMed thin-wall,respectively. 展开更多

Sine-wave drive and square-wave drive are two common motor control strategies.This study constructs a mathematical model capable of predicting the distribution of electromagnetic force waves in synchronous reluctance motors(SynRMs)under these two drive methods,and comparatively analyzes the vibration phenomena induced by electromagnetic forces under different drive methods.It aims to provide an effective tool for predicting the distribution of electromagnetic force waves in SynRMs,while exploring the influence of drive modes on their vibration characteristics.The study focuses on a 4-pole,36-slot 5.5 kW SynRM.Based on the magnetomotive force(MMF)-permeance method,incorporating the special rotor structure and the characteristics of current harmonics under square-wave drive,an air-gap flux distribution function is established.Meanwhile,Maxwell’s stress tensor method is adopted to analyze how the air-gap flux density relates to electromagnetic excitation force waves.Subsequently,this analysis is applied to forecast the spatiotemporal distribution features of radial electromagnetic force waves.Finite element simulations are conducted to compute the modal and vibration responses of the SynRM,followed by a comparative analysis of the vibration characteristics under the two drive methods.Additionally,a 6-pole,36-slot SynRM is used for additional comparative verification.Ultimately,the effectiveness of the simulation results is verified through experiments. 展开更多
