A review of the experimental and numerical studies on the compression behavior of the additively produced metallic lattice structures at high and low strain rates

Recent advances in additive manufacturing have enabled the construction of metallic lattice structures with tailored mechanical and functional properties.One potential application of metallic lattice struc-tures is in the impact load mitigation where an external kinetic energy is absorbed by the deformation/crushing of lattice cells.This has motivated a growing number of experimental and numerical studies,recently,on the crushing behavior of additively produced lattice structures.The present study overviews the dynamic and quasi-static crushing behavior of additively produced Ti64,316L,and AlSiMg alloy lattice structures.The first part of the study summarizes the main features of two most commonly used additive processing techniques for lattice structures,namely selective-laser-melt(SLM)and electro-beam-melt(EBM),along with a description of commonly observed process induced defects.In the second part,the deformation and strain rate sensitivities of the selected alloy lattices are outlined together with the most widely used dynamic test methods,followed by a part on the observed micro-structures of the SLM and EBM-processed Ti64,316L and AlSiMg alloys.Finally,the experimental and numerical studies on the quasi-static and dynamic compression behavior of the additively processed Ti64,316L,and AlSiMg alloy lattices are reviewed.The results of the experimental and numerical studies of the dynamic properties of various types of lattices,including graded,non-uniform strut size,hollow,non-uniform cell size,and bio-inspired,were tabulated together with the used dynamic testing methods.The dynamic tests have been noted to be mostly conducted in compression Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB)or Taylor-and direct-impact tests using the SHPB set-up,in all of which relatively small-size test specimens were tested.The test specimen size effect on the compression behavior of the lattices was further emphasized.It has also been shown that the lattices of Ti64 and AlSiMg alloys are relatively brittle as compared with the lattices of 316L alloy.Finally,the challenges associated with modelling lattice structures were explained and the micro tension tests and multi-scale modeling techniques combining microstructural characteristics with macroscopic lattice dynamics were recommended to improve the accuracy of the numerical simulations of the dynamic compression deformations of metallic lattice structures. 展开更多

As a new type of lightweight structure,metallic lattice structure has higher stiffness and strength to weight ratio.To freely obtain 316L lattice structures with designed cell structure and adjustable porosity,additive manufacturing combined with investment casting was conducted to fabricate the 316L lattice structures with Kelvin cell.The compression simulation of 316L lattice structures with different porosities was carried out by using the finite element method.The numerical simulation results were verified by compression experiment,and the simulated results were consistent with the compression tests.The compressive mechanical properties of 316L lattice structures are directly related to porosity and independent of strut diameters.The 316L lattice structures with Kelvin cell have a smooth stress-strain curve and obvious plastic platform,and the hump stress-strain curves are avoided. 展开更多

The sandwich structure of cushioning packaging has an important influence on the cushioning performance.Mathematical fractal theory is an important graphic expression.Based on Hilbert fractal theory,a new sandwich structure was designed.The generation mechanism and recurrence formula of theHilbert fractal were expressed by Lin’s language,and the second-orderHilbert sandwich structure was constructed fromthermoplastic polyurethane.The constitutive model of the hyperelastic body was established by using the finite element method.With the unit mass energy absorption as the optimization goal,the fractal sandwich structure was optimized,and the best result was obtained when the order was 2.5 and the unit layer thickness was 0.75 mm.TheHilbert sandwich structure was compared with the rice-shaped sandwich structure commonly used in industry,and the Hilbert fractal structure had better energy absorption.This has practical significance for the development and application of newcushioning packaging structures. 展开更多

The high variability of shock in terrorist attacks poses a threat to people's lives and properties,necessitating the development of more effective protective structures.This study focuses on the angle gradient and proposes four different configurations of concave hexagonal honeycomb structures.The structures'macroscopic deformation behavior,stress-strain relationship,and energy dissipation characteristics are evaluated through quasi-static compression and Hopkinson pressure bar impact experiments.The study reveals that,under varying strain rates,the structures deform starting from the weak layer and exhibit significant interlayer separation.Additionally,interlayer shear slip becomes more pronounced with increasing strain rate.In terms of quasi-static compression,symmetric gradient structures demonstrate superior energy absorption,particularly the symmetric negative gradient structure(SNG-SMS)with a specific energy absorption of 13.77 J/cm~3.For dynamic impact,unidirectional gradient structures exhibit exceptional energy absorption,particularly the unidirectional positive gradient honeycomb structure(UPG-SML)with outstanding mechanical properties.The angle gradient design plays a crucial role in determining the structure's stability and deformation mode during impact.Fewer interlayer separations result in a more pronounced negative Poisson's ratio effect and enhance the structure's energy absorption capacity.These findings provide a foundation for the rational design and selection of seismic protection structures in different strain rate impact environments. 展开更多

To ensure safe and economical backfill mining,the mechanical response of the backfill–rock interaction system needs to be understood.The numerical investigation of the mechanical behavior of backfill–rock composite structure(BRCS)under triaxial compression,which includes deformation,failure patterns,strength characteristics,and acoustic emission(AE)evolution,was proposed.The models used in the tests have one rough interface,two cement–iron tailings ratios(CTRs),four interface angles(IAs),and three confining pressures(CPs).Results showed that the deformation,strength characteristics,and failure patterns of BRCS under triaxial compression depend on IA,CP,and CTR.The stress–strain curves of BRCS under triaxial compression could be divided into five stages,namely,compaction,elasticity,yield,strain softening,and residual stress.The relevant AE counts have corresponding relationships with different stages.The triaxial compressive strengths of composites increase linearly with the increase of the CP.Furthermore,the CP stress strengthening effect occurs.When the IAs are45°and 60°,the failure areas of composites appear in the interface and backfill.When the IAs are 75°and 90°,the failure areas of composites appear in the backfill,interface,and rock.Moreover,the corresponding failure modes yield the combined shear failure.The research results provide the basis for further understanding of the stability of the BRCS. 展开更多

Inspired by the gradient structure of the nature,two gradient lattice structures,i.e.,unidirectional gradient lattice(UGL)and bidirectional gradient lattice(BGL),are proposed based on the body-centered cubic(BCC)lattice to obtain specially designed mechanical behaviors,such as load-bearing and energy absorption capacities.First,a theoretical model is proposed to predict the initial stiffness of the gradient lattice structure under compressive loading,and validated against quasi-static compression tests and finite element models(FEMs).The deformation and failure mechanisms of the two structures are further studied based on experiments and simulations.The UGL structure exhibits a layer-by-layer failure mode,which avoids structure-wise shear failure in uniform structures.The BGL structure presents a symmetry deformation pattern,and the failure initiates at the weakest part.Finally,the energy absorption behaviors are also discussed.This study demonstrates the potential application of gradient lattice structures in load-transfer-path modification and energy absorption by topology design. 展开更多

In the alloy of stoichiometric composition the particles of Ni_3B phase has the size around 0.1μm and is located on the grain boundary of the main phase. The decreasing of concentrations of Al in the ofF-stoichiometric alloy leads to increase in the degree of the long-range order parameter, increasing the concen- trations of boron in the solid solution and decreasing its localization on the grain boundary. Microalloying of boron leads to increasing in the fraction of grain monodomains with disloca- tions up to 0.7 in the alloy of the off-stoichiometric composition and up to 1 in the alloy of the stoichiometric composition. It was established the correlation between the degree of the concentration inhomogeneity, average density of the dislocations and the average long range-order parameter. 展开更多

The recovery and utilization of ubiquitous low-grade heat are crucial for mitigating the fossil energy crisis.However,uncontrolled spontaneous heat dissipation limits its practical application.Inspired by skeletal muscle thermogenesis,we develop a compressible wood phase change gel with mechano-controlled heat release by infiltrating xylitol gel into wood aerogel.The xylitol gel can store recovered low-grade heat for at least 1 month by leveraging its inherent energy barrier.The hierarchically aligned lamellar structure of wood aerogel facilitates mechanical adaptation,hydrogen bond formation,and energy dissipation between the wood aerogel and the xylitol gel,increasing the compressive strength and toughness of wood phase change gel fivefold compared to xylitol gel.This enhancement effect enables repetitive contact-separation motions between the wood phase change gel and the substrate during radial compression,overcoming the energy barrier and releasing approximately 178.6 J g−1 of heat.As a proof-of-concept,the wood phase change gel serves as the hot side in a thermoelectric generator,providing about 2.13 W m^(−2) of clean electricity by the controlled utilization of recovered solar heat.This study presents a sustainable method to achieve off-grid electricity generation through the controlled utilization of recovered low-grade heat. 展开更多

This study pioneers the integrated fabrication of magnesium corrugated-core sandwich structures using wire-arc directed energy deposition(WA-DED).Two sandwich structures—V-type and X-type—were designed with optimized deposition paths to achieve comparable grain morphology while enhancing strength.The compression properties and failure modes of the two corrugated-core sandwich structures were examined through quasi-static compression tests.Results showed that the V-type structure exhibited a higher specific compressive strength(93 MPa∙cm^(3)/g)than the X-type structure(72 MPa∙cm^(3)/g).Both finite element analysis and experimental compression tests indicated that failure occurred at the midsection of the corrugated core.This work offers valuable insights for the efficient fabrication of high-strength corrugated-core sandwich structures. 展开更多

Semi-periodic structures namely inclined wavy structures (IWS) are experimentally observed in compressible mixing layers at two convective Mach numbers (Mc = 0.11 and 0.47). Flow structures are visualized by the laserinduced planar laser Mie scattering (PLMS) technique. Two methods are developed to investigate the spatial distribu- tion and geometry of IWS: (1) the dominant mode extrac- tion (DME) method, to extract the dominant modes of IWS from the streamwise gray-level fluctuation, and (2) the phase tracking (PT) method, to identify the shape of IWS. The re- sults suggest that pressure perturbations account for the for- marion of IWS in the initial mixing region and the joint effect of dilatation and coherent vortices enhances IWS in the well- developed region. The large transverse (cross-flow) scale of the IWS and their relation to coherent vortices (CV) indicate that the disturbance originated from CV in the mixing center propagates far into the free streams. The DME and the PT method are shown to be the effective tools to study the geometrical features of wavy structures in compressible shear flows. 展开更多

To compress screen image sequence in real-time remote and interactive applications,a novel compression method is proposed.The proposed method is named as CABHG.CABHG employs hybrid coding schemes that consist of intra-frame and inter-frame coding modes.The intra-frame coding is a rate-distortion optimized adaptive block size that can be also used for the compression of a single screen image.The inter-frame coding utilizes hierarchical group of pictures(GOP) structure to improve system performance during random accesses and fast-backward scans.Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed CABHG method has approximately 47%-48% higher compression ratio and 46%-53% lower CPU utilization than professional screen image sequence codecs such as TechSmith Ensharpen codec and Sorenson 3 codec.Compared with general video codecs such as H.264 codec,XviD MPEG-4 codec and Apple's Animation codec,CABHG also shows 87%-88% higher compression ratio and 64%-81% lower CPU utilization than these general video codecs. 展开更多

Lots of field investigations have proven that layer-crack structure usually appears during the excavation process of deep rock or coal mass.To provide experimental data for studying the formation mechanism of layer-crack structure,this study researches the influence of lateral pressure on the mechanical behavior of different rock types.Four rock types have been tested and the formation mechanism of macro-fracture surface is analyzed.Results indicate that the brittleness and burst proneness of rock or coal material are stronger than that of gypsum material due to the different mineral compositions and structures.When the lateral pressure is less than 10%uniaxial strength,the peak stress and elastic modulus increase with the increase of lateral pressure;but when the lateral pressure is larger than 10%uniaxial strength,the two parameters decrease slightly or keep steady.This is because when the lateral pressure reaches a certain value,local failure will be formed during the process of applying lateral pressure.Under the condition of low lateral pressure,the failure of the specimen is dominated by the tensile mechanism;under the condition of relatively high lateral pressure,the area of the specimen close to the free surface is tensile splitting failure,and the area far from the free surface is shear failure. 展开更多

Bamboo is a unique fiber-reinforced bio-composite with fibers embedded into a parenchyma cell matrix.We conducted axial compression tests on bamboo blocks prepared from bottom to top,and from inner to outer portions of the culm.The apparent Young’s modulus and compressive strength of whole thickness bamboo blocks exhibited slight increases with increasing height along the culm,due to slight increases of fiber volume fraction(Vf)from 28.4 to 30.4%.Other blocks showed a significant increase in apparent Young’s modulus and strength from the inner to outer part of the culm wall,mainly owing to a sharp increase of Vf from 17.1 to 59.8%.With a decrease of fiber fraction volume there was a transition from relatively brittle behavior to very ductile behavior in bamboo blocks.Results indicated that stiffness and strength of bamboo was primarily due to fiber in compression,and ductility of bamboo was provided by the parenchyma cell matrix acting as a natural fiber-reinforced composite. 展开更多

Experimental studies which focus on flow visualization and the velocity field of a supersonic laminar/turbulent flow over a compression ramp were carried out in a Mach 3.0 wind tunnel. Fine flow structures and velocity field structures were obtained via NPLS (nanoparticle-tracer planar laser scattering) and PIV (particle image velocimetry) techniques, time- averaged flow structures were researched, and spatiotemporal evolutions of transient flow structures were analyzed. The flow visualization results indicated that when the ramp angles were 25~, a typical separation occurred in the laminar flow, some typical flow structures such as shock induced by the boundary layer, separation shock, reversed flow and reattachment shock were visible clearly. While a certain extent separation occurred in turbulent flow, the separation region was much smaller. When the ramp angles were 28~, laminar flow separated further, and the separation region expanded evidently, flow structures in the separation region were complex. While a typical separation occurred in turbulent flow, reversed flow structures were significant, flow structures in the separation region were relatively simple. The experimental results of velocity field were corresponding to flow visualization, and the velocity field structures of both compression ramp flows agreed with the flow structures well. There were three layered structures in the U component velocity, and the V component velocity appeared like an oblique "v". Some differences between these two compression ramp flows can be observed in the velocity profiles of the shear layer and the shearing intensity. 展开更多

A model predictive controller based on a novel structure selection criterion for the vapor compression cycle (VCC) of refrigeration process is proposed in this paper. Firstly, those system variables are analyzed which exert significant influences on the system performance. Then the structure selection criterion, a trade-off between computation complexity and model performance, is applied to different model structures, and the results are utilized to determine the optimized model structure for controller design. The controller based on multivariable model predictive control (MPC) strategy is designed, and the optimization problem for the reduced order models is formulated as a constrained minimization problem. The effectiveness of the proposed MPC controller is verified on the experimental rig. 展开更多

Second generation drug eluting stents(DES) have shown better safety and efficacy in comparison to first generation DES,because of thinner struts,nondurable polymers and coating with better anti-proliferative drugs.The newer DES with cobalt alloy base have demonstrated a greater trackability,deliverability,conformability,flexibility and radio-opacity.However,these thin strut stents have a downside of poor longitudinal axial strength,and therefore get easily deformed/ compressed at their end with a slight trauma during exchange of various catheters.We hereby report two cases of "longitudinal stent compression(LSC)" of everolimus-eluting stent,which happened during percutaneous coronary intervention of right coronary artery.Both the cases were successfully managed with non-compliant balloon dilatation.Various reasons for LSC and its management are discussed in the article. 展开更多
