Insights into Student Perceptions of Error Feedback and Improvement Preferences in Online Programming Education

Online programming platforms are popular in programming education.However,there has been no research investigating students’real opinions and expectations of the error feedback mechanisms,leaving educators without a solid data foundation when attempting to improve the error feedback mechanisms.This paper makes a survey of 834 students across various programming courses and investigates student perceptions of error feedback mechanisms on online programming platforms.It explores the effectiveness of existing feedback,student satisfaction,and preferences for potential improvements,focusing on automatic error localization and program repair mechanisms.Results reveal a significant portion of students are dissatisfied with current feedback due to its limited informativeness.Students also express a clear demand for stronger feedback mechanisms,such as error localization and repair hints.Nevertheless,they prefer feedback that subtly guides them toward solutions,rather than providing direct and explicit answers,valuing the opportunity to enhance their debugging skills.The findings suggest a need for balanced,educational-focused feedback mechanisms that aid learning while promoting independent problem-solving. 展开更多

Effectiveness of a stepped self-care program for stroke survivors:A quasi-experimental study

Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the stepped self-care program on the self-care,self-efficacy,and quality of life of stroke survivors.Methods This quasi-experimental study allocated 110 stroke survivors from two neurology wards into an intervention group(n=55)who received the stepped self-care program and a control group(n=55)who received usual care from June to December 2023.The Self-Care of Stroke Inventory,Stroke Self-Efficacy Questionnaire,and the short version of the Stroke Specific Quality of Life Scale were administered at baseline(T0),immediately post-intervention(T_(1)),and at 1-month(T_(2))and 3-month(T_(3))follow-ups.Data were analyzed using repeated measures analyses of variance,and generalized estimating equations.Results A total of 48 participants in the intervention group and 50 participants in the control group completed the study.No statistically significant differences were observed at T0 in any of the measured indicators(all P>0.05).The study showed significant group,time,and group×time interaction effects across the assessed outcomes(all P<0.05).Follow-up between-group comparisons at T_(1),T_(2),and T_(3) indicated that the intervention group had significantly higher scores in self-care maintenance,self-care monitoring,self-care management,self-efficacy,and quality of life than the control group(all P<0.001).Conclusions The stepped self-care program significantly improved self-care behaviors,self-efficacy,and quality of life among stroke survivors.These findings support the broader implementation of this approach in post-discharge home self-care. 展开更多

Races using kitefoil and windfoil surfboards have been in the Olympic Games for the first time in Paris 2024,signalling their relevance in sailing sports.However,the dynamics of these devices is yet not well understood,in particular the influence on the hydrodynamic forces and moments of the distance of the foil to the free surface.Considering this,the present paper documents an experimental investigation in which forces and torque produced,under uniform flow,by a full-scale state-of-the-art hydrofoil(suitable both for kitesurf and windsurf)were measured.A range of velocities,angles of attack,and submergences were tested,leading to Froude numbers based on submergence with maximum values around five,a typical range in actual sailing conditions.From these tests,formulae for the hydrodynamic coefficients have been proposed.They can be used for developing Velocity Prediction Programs(VPP)for this kind of craft,a necessary tool to plan racing configurations and to analyze their racing performance.With the aim of making the experimental data useful for benchmarking numerical models and for future research on related topics such as foil ventilation and transition to turbulence,the specimen’s 3D file is provided as supplementary material to this paper. 展开更多

Open-loop control of combustion instabilities in a full-scale annular ramjet combustor using linear genetic programming

The operational demands of a wide range significantly exacerbate combustion instability issues within ramjet combustor.To suppress combustion oscillations,an open-loop control system utilizing Linear Genetic Programming(LGP)has been developed for a full-scale annular ramjet combustor.The LGP is used to generate control laws that include multi-frequency forcing.These laws are then transformed into square waves to actuate the solenoid valve,which modulates the kerosene supply for open-loop control.The results show that the duty cycle has little effect on instability amplitude,whereas an increase in frequency leads to a remarked reduction in combustion amplitude.After five generations evolvements,the pressure amplitude is reduced by 40.6% under the optimal control law generated by LGP.Furthermore,the machine learning process is depicted using a proximity map of control law similarity,with the search pathway visualized by the steepest descent.All individuals go forward to the upper left corner of the map with the evolution process,terminating at the optimal individual of the fifth generation. 展开更多

The field of nanomedicine has been revolutionized by the concept of immunogenic cell death(ICD)-enhanced cancer therapy,which holds immense promise for the efficient treatment of cancer.However,precise delivery of ICD inducer is severely hindered by complex biological barriers.How to design and build intelligent nanoplatform for adaptive and dynamic cancer therapy remains a big challenge.Herein,this article presents the design and preparation of CD44-targeting and ZIF-8 gated gold nanocage(Au@ZH) for programmed delivery of the 1,2-diaminocyclohexane-Pt(Ⅱ)(DACHPt) as ICD inducer.After actively targeting the CD44 on the surface of 4T1 tumor cell,this Pt-Au@ZH can be effectively endocytosed by the 4T1 cell and release the DACHPt in tumor acidic environment,resulting in ICD effect and superior antitumor efficacy both in vitro and in vivo in the presence of mild 808 nm laser irradiation.By integration of internal and external stimuli intelligently,this programmed nanoplatform is poised to become a cornerstone in the pursuit of effective and targeted cancer therapy in the foreseeable future. 展开更多

During the use of robotics in applications such as antiterrorism or combat,a motion-constrained pursuer vehicle,such as a Dubins unmanned surface vehicle(USV),must get close enough(within a prescribed zero or positive distance)to a moving target as quickly as possible,resulting in the extended minimum-time intercept problem(EMTIP).Existing research has primarily focused on the zero-distance intercept problem,MTIP,establishing the necessary or sufficient conditions for MTIP optimality,and utilizing analytic algorithms,such as root-finding algorithms,to calculate the optimal solutions.However,these approaches depend heavily on the properties of the analytic algorithm,making them inapplicable when problem settings change,such as in the case of a positive effective range or complicated target motions outside uniform rectilinear motion.In this study,an approach employing a high-accuracy and quality-guaranteed mixed-integer piecewise-linear program(QG-PWL)is proposed for the EMTIP.This program can accommodate different effective interception ranges and complicated target motions(variable velocity or complicated trajectories).The high accuracy and quality guarantees of QG-PWL originate from elegant strategies such as piecewise linearization and other developed operation strategies.The approximate error in the intercept path length is proved to be bounded to h^(2)/(4√2),where h is the piecewise length. 展开更多

Programmable/reprogrammable magneto-responsive composites(MRCs)are highly desirable for applications in soft robotics,morphable actuators,and biomedical devices due to their capabilities of undergoing reversible,complex,untethered,and rapid deformations.However,current MRC-based devices primarily rely on soft matrices,which revert to their original shapes and cease functioning when external magnetic fields are removed.Moreover,their magnetization programming,deformations,and functioning need to alternate between encoding and actuation platforms,limiting the adaptability and efficiency.Here,we present a reprogrammable magnetic shape-memory composite(RM-SMC)integrating a shape-memory polymer(SMP)skeleton with phase-transition magnetic microcapsules.High-intensity laser melts microcapsules for magnetic realignment under programmed fields,while low-intensity laser softens SMP for structural reconfiguration without compromising integrity.This dual-laser strategy facilitates in situ magnetization programming,shape morphing,and function execution within a single material system.Our innovative approach enables unique applications,including omnidirectional multi-degree-of-freedom actuators that can activate light switches,solar trackers that optimize energy capture,and adaptive impellers that modulate fluid pumping.By eliminating platform alternation and enabling shape/function retention post-actuation,the RM-SMC platform overcomes critical limitations in conventional MRCs,establishing a paradigm for multifunctional devices requiring persistent configuration control and field-independent operation. 展开更多

Genetic programming (GP) has a good ability to deal with complex and nonlinear problems, therefore genetic programming approach is propesed to predict mining induced surface subsidence in this article. First genetic programming technique is introduced, second, surface subsidence genetic programming model is set up by selecting its main affective factors and training relating to practical engineering data, and finally, predictions are made by the testing of data, whose results show that the relative error is approximately less than 10%, which can meet the engineering needs, and therefore, this proposed approach is valid and applicable in predicting mining induced surface subsidence. With the precondition of strictly controlling maximum emissions rights, initial water rights were allocated between the first and the second levels of the hierarchy in order to promote fair and coordinated development across different regions of the basin and coordinated and efficient water use across different water sectors, realize the maximum comprehensive benefits to the basin, promote the unity of quantity and quality of initial water rights allocation, and eliminate water conflict across different regions and water sectors. According to interactive decision-making theory, a principal-subordinate hierarchical interactive iterative algorithm based on the satisfaction degree was developed and used to solve the initial water rights allocation model. The conjugate gradient method is used to update the variables with indices outside of the active set, while the projected gradient method is used to update the active variables. At every iterative level, the search direction consists of two parts, one of which is a subspace trumcated Newton direction, another is a modified gradient direction. With the projected search the algorithm is suitable to large problems. The convergence of the method is proved and same numerical tests with dimensions ranging from 5000 to 20000 are given. 展开更多

Submerged vanes are installed on rivers and channel beds to protect the outer bank bends from scouring.Also,local scouring occurs around the submerged vanes over time,and identifying the effective factors on the scouring phenomena around these submerged vanes is one of the important issues in river engineering.The most important aimof this study is investigation of scour pattern around submerged vanes located in 180°bend experimentally and numerically.Firstly,the effects of various parameters such as the Froude number(Fr),angle of submerged vanes to the flow(α),angle of submerged vane location in the bend(θ),distance between submerged vanes(d),height(H),and length(L)of the vanes on the dimensionless volume of the scour hole were experimentally studied.The submerged vanes were installed on a 180°bend whose central radius and channel width were 2.8 and 0.6 m,respectively.By reducing the Froude number,the scour hole volume decreased.For all Froude numbers,the biggest scour hole formed atθ=15°.In all models,by increasing the Froude number,the scour hole volume significantly increases.In addition,by increasing the submerged vanes’length and height,the scour hole dimensions also grow.Secondly,using gene expression programming(GEP),a relationship for determining the scour hole volume around the submerged vanes was provided.For this model,the determination coefficients(R2)for the training and test modes were computed as 0.91 and 0.9,respectively.In addition,this study performed partial derivative sensitivity analysis(PDSA).According to the results,the PDSA was calculated as positive for all input variables. 展开更多

Deadlock resolution strategies based on siphon control are widely investigated.Their computational efficiency largely depends on siphon computation.Mixed-integer programming(MIP)can be utilized for the computation of an emptiable siphon in a Petri net(PN).Based on it,deadlock resolution strategies can be designed without requiring complete siphon enumeration that has exponential complexity.Due to this reason,various MIP methods are proposed for various subclasses of PNs.This work proposes an innovative MIP method to compute an emptiable minimal siphon(EMS)for a subclass of PNs named S^(4)PR.In particular,many particular structural characteristics of EMS in S4 PR are formalized as constraints,which greatly reduces the solution space.Experimental results show that the proposed MIP method has higher computational efficiency.Furthermore,the proposed method allows one to determine the liveness of an ordinary S^(4)PR. 展开更多

More accurate and reliable estimation of residual strength friction angle(/r)of clay is crucial in many geotechnical engineering applications,including riverbank stability analysis,design,and assessment of earthen dam slope stabilities.However,a general predictive equation for/r,with applicability in a wide range of effective parameters,remains an important research gap.The goal of this study is to develop a more accurate equation for/r using the Pareto Optimal Multi-gene Genetic Programming(POMGGP)approach by evaluating a comprehensive dataset of 290 experiments compiled from published literature databases worldwide.A new framework for integrated equation derivation proposed that hybridizes the Subset Selection of Maximum Dissimilarity Method(SSMD)with Multi-gene Genetic Programming(MGP)and Pareto-optimality(PO)to find an accurate equation for/r with wide range applicability.The final predictive equation resulted from POMGGP modeling was assessed in comparison with some previously published machine learning-based equations using statistical error analysis criteria,Taylor diagram,revised discrepancy ratio(RDR),and scatter plots.Base on the results,the POMGGP has the lowest uncertainty with U95=2.25,when compared with Artificial Neural Network(ANN)(U95=2.3),Bayesian Regularization Neural Network(BRNN)(U95=2.94),Levenberg-Marquardt Neural Network(LMNN)(U95=3.3),and Differential Evolution Neural Network(DENN)(U95=2.37).The more reliable results in estimation of/r derived by POMGGP with reliability 59.3%,and resiliency 60%in comparison with ANN(reliability=30.23%,resiliency=28.33%),BRNN(reliability=10.47%,resiliency=10.39%),LMNN(reliability=19.77%,resiliency=20.29%)and DENN(reliability=27.91%,resiliency=24.19%).Besides the simplicity and ease of application of the new POMGGP equation to a broad range of conditions,using the uncertainty,reliability,and resilience analysis confirmed that the derived equation for/r significantly outperformed other existing machine learning methods,including the ANN,BRNN,LMNN,and DENN equations。 展开更多
