Passenger choice between demand-responsive train and pre-scheduled train in high-speed railway:A stated preference study

Demand-responsive transportation has been introduced in many cities around the world.However,whether it is applicable in the railway is still questionable,an exploration of passenger choice behavior between demandresponsive trains and pre-scheduled trains is pivotal in addressing this issue.To delve into passengers’choice preferences when facing demand-responsive trains and to dissect the feasibility of implementing demandresponsive service in high-speed railways,the stated preference survey method is employed to investigate travel intention of passengers.Based on the survey data obtained in China,the heterogeneity of passengers is analyzed from three aspects:personal socio-economic characteristics,travel characteristics,and travel mode choice.Considering the situation that demand-responsive train cannot operate,the risk attributes are considered.To bolster the appeal of demand-responsive trains,personalized service product attributes are added.Mixed Logit mode,which takes into account the heterogeneous travel choice behavior of passengers,is developed,and Maximum Likelihood Estimation and the Monte Carlo method are used to calibrate model parameters.The willingness to pay in terms of different factors of passengers is determined.The results indicate that early arrival deviation time,late arrival deviation time,demand response time,and success rate of ticket purchase remarkable influence passengers’decision regarding demand-responsive train,with only the success rate of ticket purchase positively impacting train choice.Moreover,the significant difference in train ticket price is observed solely in the self-funded long distance scenario,while demand-responsive trains are found to be particularly appealing in self-funded short distance scenario.Through the Willingness To Pay(WTP)analysis,it is discovered that by shortening demand response time,enhancing the success rate of ticket purchase,and minimizing the deviation times of early arrival and late arrival of trains,the attractiveness of the demand-responsive train to passengers under three travel scenarios can be augmented.This study provides profound insights into the possibility of railway enterprises operating demand-responsive trains. 展开更多

In this paper,we introduce the combining stated preference and revealed preference methods which is the state-ofthe-art method for the valuation of non-market goods.Revealed preference methods and stated preference (SP) methods have both been applied by economists in valuing non-market goods;however both methods have inherent weaknesses.In order to exploit the strengths of the various approaches while minimizing their weaknesses,combining the two methods has become an important methodological option.Up to now,a growing number of literatures of studying combing the two types of data have evolved,and researchers developed three types of models to estimate combining revealed preference and stated preference data in academic fields:discrete choice model,continuous choice model and mixed choice model.Combining stated and revealed preference methods have been developed fast especially in the transport study field in which ideas could also be leant for environmental economic studies. 展开更多

To decide about irvestments in appropriate seismic vulnerability reduction and resilience enhancement mea-sures,policymakers need to acquire adequate insight into the value of a statistical life(VSL).The VSL measures the monetary value the public assigns to reducing mortality due to a specific risk(e.g-.dying from an earthquake)over a given period.In the absence of appropriate models to estimate the context-specific VSL for a given community,past studies have resorted to approaches such as using the VSL estimated for other purposes(e.g.,transportation and environmental safety)or other countries(e.g,the US).This can lead to under-or over-estimation of VSL,misappropriation of the funds for seismic vulnerability reduction programs,and adverse economic,political,and social consequences.This study proposes a methodology that follows the stated pref-erence binary choice approach to estimate the willingness to pay(WTP)to reduce the risk of earthquake-induced mortalities.The proposed method,which is applied to quantify VSL in Iran,involves using a questionnaire to collect the needed information about people's choices when investing in various risk reduction measures.It uses a test containing positivity and proportionality components to check the responses'consistency.Regression modeling is used to estimate the respondents'WTP and VSL. 展开更多

The conventional traffic demand forecasting methods based on revealed preference (RP) data are not able to predict the modal split. Passengers' stated intentions are indispensable for modal split forecasting and evaluation of new traffic modes. This paper analyzed the biases and errors included in stated preference data, put forward the new stochastic utility functions, and proposed an unbiased disaggregate model and its approximate model based on the combination of RP and stated preference (SP) data, with analysis of the parameter estimation algorithm. The model was also used to forecast rail transit passenger volumes to the Beijing Capital International Airport and the shift ratios from current traffic modes to rail transit. Experimental results show that the model can greatly increase forecasting accuracy of the modal split ratio of current traffic modes and can accurately forecast the shift ratios from current modes to the new mode. 展开更多

During big events, non-local private car travelers can be divided into two types which were returning in one day and in several days. It was demonstrated that those two kinds of travelers have distinct behavior on park and ride (P&R), due to their different travel demand and behavior attributes. In this paper focusing on the travelers returning in several days, the travel attributes and requirements for P&R were analyzed with stated preference survey. A P&R choice behavior disaggregated logit model was established and calibrated based on random utility theory. The model concludes three variables, which were travel time, parking fee and comprehensive attractiveness index for suburban satellite towns comparing to urban district. The results revealed that for travelers returning in several days the primary key point is increasing the attractiveness of suburban satellite towns. 展开更多

Traffic congestion has become a critical issue in developing countries,as it tends to increase social costs in terms of travel cost and time,energy consumption and environmental degradation.With limited resources,reducing travel demand by influencing individuals’ travel behavior can be a better long-term solution.To achieve this objective,alternate travel options need to be provided so that people can commute comfortably and economically.This study aims to identify key motives and constraints in the consideration of carpooling policy with the help of stated preference questionnaire survey that was conducted in Lahore City.The designed questionnaire includes respondents’ socioeconomic demographics,and intentions and stated preferences on carpooling policy.Factor analysis was conducted on travelers’ responses,and a structural model was developed for carpooling.Survey and modeling results reveal that social,environmental and economic benefits,disincentives on car use,preferential parking treatment for carpooling,and comfort and convenience attributes are significant determinants in promoting carpooling.However,people with strong belief in personal privacy,security,freedom in traveling and carpooling service constraints would have less potential to use thecarpooling service.In addition,pro-auto and pro-carpooling attitudes,marital status,profession and travel purpose for carpooling are also underlying factors.The findings implicate that to promote carpooling policy it is required to consider appropriate incentives on this service and disincentives on use of private vehicle along with modification of people’s attitudes and intentions. 展开更多

We provided a model that can predict effects of different policies and discounts on market share of insurance companies. The usage of model has been tested in Tehran insurance market and the results provided showed that people would consider changing their insurance plans based on discounts and costs. Further, the first movers (i.e. the insurance companies that offer the discounts first) would absorb safer drivers and thereby stand in a superior financial position. This could significantly change the dynamics and the role of major players in the insurance market. 展开更多

This study develops a flexible latent class model(LCM)to investigate the electric vehicle(EV)type choice decisions of Halifax residents.It utilizes cross-sectional data from the 2022 Halifax Travel Activity(HaliTRAC)survey,which includes questions related to EV adoption.This study also analyzes eight attitudes and lifestyle preferences related state-ments using the principal component analysis(PCA)technique,and finally extracts three components labeled as“EV enthusiasts”,“sustainable travellers”,and“remote work arrangement admirers”.This paper explores the heterogeneity between two classes for dif-ferent alternative vehicle type choices,e.g.,battery electric vehicle(BEV),plug-in hybrid electric vehicle(PHEV),hybrid electric vehicle(HEV),and regular internal combustion engine(ICE)vehicle.Based on class membership attributes,class-1 can be identified as those who live in suburban areas,have a large family with high vehicle ownership,and are interested in travelling with their family members,especially with their children and vice-versa for class-2.Results suggest that variables across two classes portray heterogene-ity,e.g.,full-time worker portray positive correlation for class-1 and negative to class-2;high annual household income group(more than$200000)exhibit high propensity to choose BEV in class-2 and vice-versa for class-1.Sustainable travelers emphasize the adverse connection towards regular vehicles,while EV enthusiasts demonstrate a favorable association with embracing any type of EV(e.g.,BEV,PHEV,or HEV).Furthermore,the find-ings from this analysis provide guidance for policy measures such as offering purchase incentives,expanding charging infrastructure,and implementing tax rebates to promote the uptake of EVs among the residents of Halifax. 展开更多

The use of advanced technology in automobiles has increased dramatically in the past couple of years.Driver-assisting gadgets such as navigation systems,advanced cruise control,collision avoidance systems,and other safety systems have moved down the ladder from luxury to more basic vehicles.Concurrently,auto manufacturers are also designing and testing driving algorithms that can assist with basic driving tasks,many of which are being continuously scrutinized by traffic safety agencies to ensure that these systems do not pose a safety hazard.The research presented in this paper brings a third perspective to in-vehicle technology by conducting a two-stage survey to collect public opinion on advanced in-vehicle technology.Approximately 64 percent of the respondents used a smartphone application to assist with their travel.The top-used applications were navigation and real-time traffic information systems.Among those who used smartphones during their commutes,the top-used applications were navigation and entertainment. 展开更多

This paper provides a convergent validity test of two types of multinomial choice questions vis-a-vis a dichotomous choice question by formally testing whether these stated preference elicitation question formats provide comparable welfare estimates. In particular, a dichotomous choice question, a traditional multinomial choice question, and a modified multinomial choice question suggested by Carson and Groves (2007) were applied in split samples to assess the influence of the informational and incentive properties on the respondents' annual willingness to accept compensation for adopting costly conservation practices in agriculture that benefit the environment. Our findings suggest that the two multinomial choice question formats elicit a similar mean willingness to accept distributions, but they are both different from a standarddichotomous choice question. Further, the willingness to accept distributions derived from the multinomial choice question formats are more dispersed than those from the dichotomous choice question. 展开更多
