[Objectives]This study aimed to explore the effect of different concentrations of selenium fertilizer on the yield,selenium content and heavy metal contents of waxy maize,thereby providing reference for the scientific...[Objectives]This study aimed to explore the effect of different concentrations of selenium fertilizer on the yield,selenium content and heavy metal contents of waxy maize,thereby providing reference for the scientific application of selenium fertilizer on waxy maize.[Methods]Different varieties of waxy maize(Guitiannuo 611,Guinuo 615 and Guiheinuo 609)were used as test materials.They were sprayed with different concentrations(0,0.5,1.0,1.5 and 2.0 g/L)of water-soluble selenium fertilizer(Xinxibao)at the big flare stage,and the effect on the yield,selenium content and heavy metal contents of the waxy maize was analyzed.[Results]Foliar application of different concentrations of selenium fertilizer showed no significant effect on the yield and yield components of waxy maize.As the concentration of selenium fertilizer increased,the grain selenium content of different varieties of waxy maize increased.Among them,the increase of Guinuo 615 was the largest,of which the selenium content reached 0.265 mg/kg,2.82 times that of the control(water).The cadmium and arsenic contents of different varieties of waxy maize decreased with the increase of the concentration of selenium fertilizer sprayed.Among the waxy maize varieties,the cadmium and arsenic contents of Guitiannuo 611 dropped the most significantly,up to 52.94%and 77.78%.In waxy maize,the correlation coefficients between selenium content and cadmium,arsenic contents were-0.5509(P<0.05)and-0.8530(P<0.01),respectively.[Conclusions]Spraying exogenous selenium fertilizer had no obvious effect on the yield of waxy maize.However,the increase of the concentration of exogenous selenium fertilizer could significantly increase the selenium content and reduce the cadmium and arsenic contents in grains of different varieties of waxy maize.展开更多

In order to better realize the important value of milk vetch as a green manure crop, further optimize the planting strategy of green manure crops and improve the utilization efficiency. It is necessary to explore the specific effects of milk vetch on selenium content and yield of rice. This experiment is based on this theme. The final results show that the absorption capacity of selenium by milk vetch in paddy field is significantly stronger than that of rice. In order to ensure the selenium content of rice, trace selenium element (exogenous) can be applied to rice, and the yield of rice can also be effectively improved.展开更多

The main biological role of selenium is to resist oxidation and inflammatory response, mainly focusing on resisting aging, preventing cardiovascular disease, protecting eyesight, counteracting or destroying the toxic properties, preventing cancer and thyroid disease. In most areas of China, there is a widespread shortage of selenium, thus producing selenium-rich agricultural products to provide natural selenium-rich health food to the areas in need of selenium, has gradually become a new hot spot of China's health food industry, but high content of selenium in food is detrimental to human body, even leads to selenium intoxication, and artificially adding inorganic selenium is difficult to guarantee that the selenium content of agricultural products is not exceeded. According to human body's daily demand for selenium in dietetics and the content of selenium in agricultural products in the Chinese food composition table, we put forward the recommendations on the standard of selenium in agricultural products, in order to provide the basis for China to formulate the health standard of selenium content in selenium-rich agricultural products.展开更多

Results for du...Some common staple roots and tubers (cassava, yam, sweet potato and yellow yam) were analyzed for selenium content level using hydride generation—atomic absorption spectrophotometry (HG-ASS) technique. Results for duplicate analysis revealed that sweet potato has the highest mean selenium content (19.2 ± 5.20 μg/kg), followed by yellow yam (18.3 ± 6.97 μg/kg), then yam (13.6 ± 7.12 μg/kg) and cassava the least (13.0 ± 5.84 μg/kg). In comparing our results with the literature values, most of the results obtained in this work such as <1.00, 1.09, 1.91, 2.35 and 11.0 μg/kg were lower while a few others like 52.6, 54.2, 72.3 and 81.8 μg/kg were higher than literature values. The variations could be due to the type of species/variety, geographical location, total selenium concentration in the soil and its bioavailability. In view of the importance of Se to human health and considering the levels found in the staples investigated, we recommend that sweet potato be popularized as a staple, much more than cassava as it is now the case in Central Nigeria.展开更多

Selenium is one of the essential trace elements in human body,however,due to the limitation of geographic factors,the intake of selenium is seriously insufficient in most regions.In this study,selenium-enriched peanut...Selenium is one of the essential trace elements in human body,however,due to the limitation of geographic factors,the intake of selenium is seriously insufficient in most regions.In this study,selenium-enriched peanut sprouts with high selenium content were prepared by soaking peanut seeds in sodium selenite.The content and distribution of selenium in germinated peanuts were investigated.The results showed that 200μmol/L sodium selenite and germination for 6 days resulted in the highest total selenium,organic selenium content,and organic selenium conversion in peanut sprouts.Selenium exists in peanut sprouts mainly in organic selenium form,of which selenoproteins are the most critical organic selenium carriers.ABTS free radical scavenging capacity and reducing power assays showed that alkali-soluble protein had the highest antioxidant activity among the four soluble proteins,attributed to its high selenium binding level.Radicle and cotyledons of peanut seedlings were significantly enriched with selenium compared to hypocotyl.Amino acid analysis and SDS-PAGE results showed that selenium increases significantly after peanut germination and selenium enrichment.This study provides a simple,environmentally friendly,and effective way of selenium enrichment and offers a theoretical basis for applying selenium-enriched foods in food and medicine.展开更多

The plant growth was ...Greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate selenium accumulation and its antioxidant response in two rice varieties (PR116 and Pusa Basmati 1121) grown on normal and seleniferous soils. The plant growth was reduced at early developmental stages and flowering was delayed by a period of 10 d on seleniferous soil. Selenium accumulation increased by 3-20 and 13-14 folds in leaves, 18 and 3 folds in grains from Pusa Basmati 1121 and PRl16 varieties, respectively. Selenium accumulation in leaves from rice plants grown on seleniferous soil resulted in significant increase in chlorophyll content, hydrogen peroxide, proline, free amino acids, total phenol and tannin contents. Lipid peroxidation levels and peroxidase activities in leaves increased whereas catalase activity showed a reverse trend. It is concluded that selenium accumulation decreased dry matter content in rice during crop development but these plants were able to combat selenium toxicity by inducing alterations in their defense system.展开更多
