This study addresses the pressing challenge of generating realistic strong ground motion data for simulating earthquakes,a crucial component in pre-earthquake risk assessments and post-earthquake disaster evaluations, particularly suited for regions with limited seismic data.Herein,we report a generative adversarial network(GAN)framework capable of simulating strong ground motions under various environmental conditions using only a small set of real earthquake records. The constructed GAN model generates ground motions based on continuous physical variables such as source distance, site conditions, and magnitude, effectively capturing the complexity and diversity of ground motions under different scenarios. This capability allows the proposed model to approximate real seismic data, making it applicable to a wide range of engineering purposes.Using the Shandong Pingyuan earthquake as an example,a specialized dataset was constructed based on regional real ground motion records. The response spectrum at target locations was obtained through inverse distance-weighted interpolation of actual response spectra, followed by continuous wavelet transform to derive the ground motion time histories at these locations.Through iterative parameter adjustments, the constructed GAN model learned the probability distribution of strong-motion data for this event. The trained model generated three-component ground-motion time histories with clear P-wave and S-wave characteristics, accurately reflecting the non-stationary nature of seismic records.Statistical comparisons between synthetic and real response spectra, waveform envelopes, and peak ground acceleration show a high degree of similarity, underscoring the effectiveness of the model in replicating both the statistical and physical characteristics of real ground motions. These findings validate the feasibility of GANs for generating realistic earthquake data in data-scarce regions, providing a reliable approach for enriching regional ground motion databases.Additionally, the results suggest that GAN-based networks are a powerful tool for building predictive models in seismic hazard analysis. 展开更多

The March 28,2025 Myanmar earthquake generated ground shaking that was perceptible throughout Myanmar and adjacent regions. This study simulated three-component ground motions across the affected region using an improved stochastic finite-fault method to systematically assess seismic impacts.Observed near-field recordings at MM.NGU station was used to determine the reliability of the theoretically derived stress drop as input for simulation.Far-field recordings constrained the frequency-dependent S-wave quality factors(Q(f)=283.305f^(0.588))for anelastic attenuation modeling.Comparisons of peak accelerations between simulation and empirical ground-motion models showed good agreement at moderate-to-large distances. However, lower near-fault simulations indicate a weaker-than-average source effect.Analysis of simulated instrumental seismic intensity revealed key patterns.Maximum intensity(Ⅹ)occurred in isolated patches within the ruptured fault projection, correlating with shallow high-slip areas.TheⅨ-intensity zone formed a north-south elongated band centered on fault projection.Significant asymmetry inⅧ-intensity distribution perpendicular to the fault strike was observed, with a wider western extension attributed to lower shear-wave velocities west of the fault.Supershear rupture behavior enhanced ground motions, expanding intensity ranges by~20%compared to sub-shear rupture. This study reveals the integrated effects of fault geometry, slip spatial distribution, rupture velocity, and site condition in governing ground motion patterns. 展开更多

Local control parameters such as instantaneous delay and instantaneous amplitude play an essential role in evaluating the performance and maintaining the stability of real-time hybrid simulation(RTHS).However, existing methods have limitations in obtaining this local assessment in either the time domain or frequency domain. In this study, the instantaneous frequency is introduced to determine local control parameters for actuator tracking assessment in a real-time hybrid simulation.Instantaneous properties, including amplitude, delay, frequency and phase, are then calculated based on analytic signals translated from actuator tracking signals through the Hilbert transform.Potential issues are discussed and solutions are proposed for calculation of local control parameters.Numerical simulations are first conducted for sinusoidal and chirp signals with time varying amplitude error and delay to demonstrate the potential of the proposed method.Laboratory tests also are conducted for a predefined random signal as well as the RTHS of a single degree of freedom structure with a self-centering viscous damper to experimentally verify the effectiveness of the proposed use of the instantaneous frequency. Results from the ensuing analysis clearly demonstrate that the instantaneous frequency provides great potential for local control assessment, and the proposed method enables local tracking parameters with good accuracy. 展开更多

The Internet of Things(IoT)and mobile technology have significantly transformed healthcare by enabling real-time monitoring and diagnosis of patients.Recognizing Medical-Related Human Activities(MRHA)is pivotal for healthcare systems, particularly for identifying actions critical to patient well-being.However,challenges such as high computational demands, low accuracy, and limited adaptability persist in Human Motion Recognition(HMR).While some studies have integrated HMR with IoT for real-time healthcare applications, limited research has focused on recognizing MRHA as essential for effective patient monitoring. This study proposes a novel HMR method tailored for MRHA detection, leveraging multi-stage deep learning techniques integrated with IoT.The approach employs EfficientNet to extract optimized spatial features from skeleton frame sequences using seven Mobile Inverted Bottleneck Convolutions(MBConv)blocks, followed by Convolutional Long Short Term Memory(ConvLSTM)to capture spatio-temporal patterns.A classification module with global average pooling,a fully connected layer, and a dropout layer generates the final predictions. The model is evaluated on the NTU RGB+D 120 and HMDB51 datasets, focusing on MRHA such as sneezing, falling, walking, sitting, etc. It achieves 94.85%accuracy for cross-subject evaluations and 96.45%for cross-view evaluations on NTU RGB+D 120,along with 89.22%accuracy on HMDB51.Additionally,the system integrates IoT capabilities using a Raspberry Pi and GSM module, delivering real-time alerts via Twilios SMS service to caregivers and patients. This scalable and efficient solution bridges the gap between HMR and IoT,advancing patient monitoring, improving healthcare outcomes, and reducing costs. 展开更多

The 2025 M_(w)7.7 Myanmar earthquake highlighted the challenge of near-fault seismic intensity field reconstruction due to sparse seismic networks. To address this limitation,a framework was proposed integrating seismic wave simulation with a data-constrained finite-fault rupture model. The constraint is implemented by identifying the optimal ground motion models(GMMs)through a scoring system that selects the best-fit GMMs to mid-and far-field China Earthquake Networks Center(CENC)seismic network data;and applying the optimal GMMs to refine the rupture model parameters for near-fault intensity field simulation. The simulated near-fault seismic intensity field reproduces seismic intensities collected from Myanmar’s sparse seismic network and concentrated in≥Ⅷintensity zones within 50 km of the projected fault plane;and identifies abnormal intensity regions exhibiting≥Ⅹintensity along the Meiktila-Naypyidaw corridor and near Shwebo that are attributed to soft soil amplification effects and near-fault directivity. This framework can also be applied to post-earthquake assessments in other similar regions. 展开更多

Ship motions induced by waves have a significant impact on the efficiency and safety of offshore operations.Real-time prediction of ship motions in the next few seconds plays a crucial role in performing sensitive activities. However, the obvious memory effect of ship motion time series brings certain difficulty to rapid and accurate prediction. Therefore,a real-time framework based on the Long-Short Term Memory(LSTM)neural network model is proposed to predict ship motions in regular and irregular head waves.A 15000 TEU container ship model is employed to illustrate the proposed framework. The numerical implementation and the real-time ship motion prediction in irregular head waves corresponding to the different time scales are carried out based on the container ship model. The related experimental data were employed to verify the numerical simulation results. The results show that the proposed method is more robust than the classical extreme short-term prediction method based on potential flow theory in the prediction of nonlinear ship motions. 展开更多

We propose a hybrid quantum-classical method, the quantum-enriched large eddy simulation(QELES),for simulating turbulence. The QELES combines the large-scale motion of the large eddy simulation(LES)and the subgrid motion of the incompressible Schrodinger flow(ISF).The ISF is a possible way to be simulated on a quantum computer, and it generates subgrid scale turbu-lent structures to enrich the LES field. The enriched LES field can be further used in turbulent combustion and multi-phase flows in which the subgrid scale motion plays an important role.As a conceptual study,we perform the simulations of ISF and LES separately on a classical computer to simulate decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence. Then, the QEI ES velocity is obtained by the time matching and the spectral blending methods. The QEL ES achieves significant improvement in predicting the energy spectrum, probaility density functions of velocity and vorticity components, and velocity structure functions, and reconstructs coherent small-scales vortices in the direct numerical simulation(DNS).On the other hand, the vortices in the QELES are less elongated and tangled than those in the DNS,and the magnitude of the third-order structure function in the QELES is less than that in the DNS,due to the diferent constitutive relations in the viscous flow and ISE. 展开更多

In recent years, frequent fire disasters have led to enormous damage in China.Effective firefighting rescues can minimize the losses caused by fires.During the rescue processes, the travel time of fire trucks can be severely affected by traffic conditions, changing the effective coverage of fire stations. However,it is still challenging to determine the effective coverage of fire stations considering dynamic traffic conditions. This paper addresses this issue by combining the traveling time calculationmodelwith the effective coverage simulationmodel. In addition,it proposes a new index of total effective coverage area(TECA)based on the time-weighted average of the effective coverage area(ECA)to evaluate the urban fire services. It also selects China as the case study to validate the feasibility of the models,a fire station(FS-JX)in Changsha.FS-JX station and its surrounding 9,117 fire risk points are selected as the fire service supply and demand points, respectively.A total of 196 simulation scenarios throughout a consecutiveweek are analyzed.Eventually,1,933,815 sets of valid sample data are obtained. The results showed that the TECA of FS-JX is 3.27 km^(2),which is far below the standard requirement of 7.00 km^(2) due to the traffic conditions. The visualization results showed that three rivers around FS-JX interrupt the continuity of its effective coverage. The proposed method can provide data support to optimize the locations of fire stations by accurately and dynamically determining the effective coverage of fire stations. 展开更多

The constant panel method within the framework of potential flow theory in the time domain is developed for solving the hydrodynamic interactions between two parallel ships with forward speed. When solving problems within a time domain framework, the free water surface needs to simultaneously satisfy both the kinematic and dynamic boundary conditions of the free water surface. This provides conditions for adding artificial damping layers.Using the Runge−Kutta method to solve equations related to time.An upwind differential scheme is used in the present method to deal with the convection terms on the free surface to prevent waves upstream.Through the comparison with the available experimental data and other numerical methods, the present method is proved to have good mesh convergence, and satisfactory results can be obtained. The constant panel method is applied to calculate the hydrodynamic interaction responses of two parallel ships advancing in head waves.Numerical simulations are conducted on the effects of forward speed, different longitudinal and lateral distances on the motion response of two modified Wigley ships in head waves. Then further investigations are conducted on the effects of different ship types on the motion response. 展开更多

This article deals with real-time hi-fi simulation of large aircraft flying in turbulent wind in a simulator to study its takeoff and landing behavior in microburst wind shear. A parameterized three-dimensional (3D) microburst model is built up on the basis of vortex ring and Rankine vortex principle. Complicated microburst wind fields are simulated by means of vortex ring declination and multi-vortex superposition. Based on the modeling data of Boeing 747-100, a dynamic model with wind shear effects considered is established and a general method to modify the aerodynamic model is proposed. A controller for longitudinal and lateral escapes is designed and verified in simulated microburst wind field. Results indicate that, with high extensibility, reasonability and effectiveness, the 3D microburst model with wind shear effects considered is fit to simulate real wind fields. Different escape schemes can be adopted to fly through a wind field from different locations. The model can be used for real-time flight simulation in a flight simulator. 展开更多

A model suitable for describing the mechanical response of thin elastic objects is proposed to simulate the deformation of guide wires in minimally invasive interventions. The main objective of this simulation is to provide doctors an opportunity to rehearse the surgery and select an optimal operation plan before the real surgery. In this model the guide wire is discretized with the multi-body representation and its elastic energy derivate from elastic theory is a polynomial function of the nodal displacements. The vascular structure is represented by a tetrahedron mesh extended from the triangular mesh of the artery, which can be extracted from the patient's CT image data. The model applies the energy decline process of the conjugate gradient method to the deformation simulation of the guide wire. Experimental results show that the polynomial relationship between elastic energy and nodal displacements tremendously simplifies the evaluation of the conjugate gradient method and significantly improves the model's efficiency. Compared with models depending on an explicit scheme for evaluation, the new model is not only non-conditionally stable but also more efficient. The model can be applied to the real-time simulation of guide wire in a vascular structure. 展开更多

Real-time hybrid simulation is an efficient and cost-effective dynamic testing technique for performance evaluation of structural systems subjected to earthquake loading with rate-dependent behavior. A loading assembly with multiple actuators is required to impose realistic boundary conditions on physical specimens. However, such a testing system is expected to exhibit significant dynamic coupling of the actuators and suffer from time lags that are associated with the dynamics of the servo-hydraulic system, as well as control-structure interaction (CSI). One approach to reducing experimental errors considers a multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) controller design, yielding accurate reference tracking and noise rejection. In this paper, a framework for multi-axial real-time hybrid simulation (maRTHS) testing is presented. The methodology employs a real-time feedback-feedforward controller for multiple actuators commanded in Cartesian coordinates. Kinematic transformations between actuator space and Cartesian space are derived for all six-degrees-of- freedom of the moving platform. Then, a frequency domain identification technique is used to develop an accurate MIMO transfer function of the system. Further, a Cartesian-domain model-based feedforward-feedback controller is implemented for time lag compensation and to increase the robustness of the reference tracking for given model uncertainty. The framework is implemented using the 1/5th-scale Load and Boundary Condition Box (LBCB) located at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed methodology, a single-story frame subjected to earthquake loading is tested. One of the columns in the fraane is represented physically in the laboratory as a cantilevered steel column. For real- time execution, the numerical substructure, kinematic transformations, and controllers are implemented on a digital signal processor. Results show excellent performance of the maRTHS framework when six-degrees-of-freedom are controUed at the interface between substructures. 展开更多

A solution scheme is proposed in this paper for an existing RTDHT system to simulate large-scale finite element (FE) numerical substructures. The analysis of the FE numerical substructure is split into response analysis and signal generation tasks, and executed in two different target computers in real-time. One target computer implements the response analysis task, wherein a large time-step is used to solve the FE substructure, and another target computer implements the signal generation task, wherein an interpolation program is used to generate control signals in a small time-step to meet the input demand of the controller. By using this strategy, the scale of the FE numerical substructure simulation may be increased significantly. The proposed scheme is initially verified by two FE numerical substructure models with 98 and 1240 degrees of freedom (DOFs). Thereafter, RTDHTs of a single frame-foundation structure are implemented where the foundation, considered as the numerical substructure, is simulated by the FE model with 1240 DOFs. Good agreements between the results of the RTDHT and those from the FE analysis in ABAQUS are obtained. 展开更多

Hybrid simulation can be a cost effective approach for dynamic testing of structural components at full scale while capturing the system level response through interactions with a numerical model. The dynamic response of a seismically isolated structure depends on the combined characteristics of the ground motion, bearings, and superstructure. Therefore, dynamic full-scale system level tests of isolated structures under realistic dynamic loading conditions are desirable towards a holistic validation of this earthquake protection strategy. Moreover, bearing properties and their ultimate behavior have been shown to be highly dependent on rate-of-loading and scale size effects, especially under extreme loading conditions.Few laboratory facilities can test full-scale seismic isolation bearings under prescribed displacement and/or loading protocols. The adaptation of a full-scale bearing test machine for the implementation of real-time hybrid simulation is presented here with a focus on the challenges encountered in attaining reliable simulation results for large scale dynamic tests. These advanced real-time hybrid simulations of large and complex hybrid models with several thousands of degrees of freedom are some of the first to use high performance parallel computing to rapidly execute the numerical analyses.Challenges in the experimental setup included measured forces contaminated by delay and other systematic control errors in applying desired displacements.Friction and inertial forces generated by the large-scale loading apparatus can affect the accuracy of measured force feedbacks.Reliable results from real-time hybrid simulation requires implementation of compensation algorithms and correction of these various sources of errors.Overall, this research program confirms that real-time hybrid simulation is a viable testing method to experimentally assess the behavior of full-scale isolators while capturing interactions with the numerical models of the superstructure to evaluate system level and in-structure response. 展开更多
