According to the characteristics of submerged floating tunnel anchored by tension legs, simplifying the tube as point mass and assuming that the tension leg is a nonlinear beam model hinged at both ends, the nonlinear vibration equation of the tension leg is derived. The equation is solved by the Galerkin method and Runge Kutta method.Subsequently, numerical analysis of typical submerged floating tunnel tension leg is carried out.It is shown that, the parametric vibration response of the submerged floating tunnel tension leg is related to the amplitude and frequency of the end excitation.Without considering axial resonance and transverse resonance,it is reasonable that higher order modes are abandoned and only the first three modes are considered. The axial resonance amplitude of the second or third order mode is equivalent to the first order mode axial resonance amplitude, which should not be ignored. 展开更多

An analytical technique, namely the homotopy analysis method (HAM), is used to solve problems of nonlinear oscillations with parametric excitation. Unlike perturbation methods, HAM is not dependent on any small physical parameters at all, and thus valid for both weakly and strongly nonlinear problems. In addition, HAM is different from all other analytic techniques in providing a simple way to adjust and control convergence region of the series solution by means of an auxiliary parameter h. In the present paper, a periodic analytic approximations for nonlinear oscillations with parametric excitation are obtained by using HAM, and the results are validated by numerical simulations. 展开更多

The buffeting performance of kilometer-level high-speed railway suspension bridges has a great impact on the smooth operation of high-speed trains. To investigate the buffeting performance of the structure significantly different from traditional suspension bridges, the first long-span high-speed railway suspension bridge,Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge(WYRB),is taken as a numerical example to demonstrate the effects of structural parameters and wind field parameters on the buffeting responses.Based on the design information, the spatial finite element model(FEM)of WYRB is established before testing its accuracy. The fluctuating wind fields are simulated via both classical and stochastic wave based spectral representation method(SRM).Finite element method is further taken to analyze the parametric sensitivity on wind induced buffeting responses in time domain. The results show that the vertical displacement is more sensitive to the changing dead load than the lateral and torsional ones. The larger stiffness of the main girder and the lower sag-to-span ratio are both helpful to reduce the buffeting responses.Wind spectrum and coherence function are key influencing factors to the responses so setting proper wind field parameters are essential in the wind-resistant design stage. The analytical results can provide references for wind resistance analysis and selection of structural and fluctuating wind field parameters for similar long-span high-speed railway suspension bridges. 展开更多

Numerical simulations are used to investigate the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic reservoir properties on the production from coal and organic rich lithologies in the Lower Cretaceous Mannville coal measures of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. The coal measures are complex reservoirs in which production is from horizontal wells drilled and completed in the thickest coal seam in the succession (1 m versus 3 m), which has production and pressure support from thinner coals in the adjacent stratigraphy and from organic-rich shales interbedded and over and underlying the coal seams. Numerical models provide insight as to the relative importance of the myriad of parameters that may impact production that are not self-evident or intuitive in complex coal measures. 展开更多

The geometric model and the analysis model can be unified together through the isogeometric analysis method, which has potential to achieve seamless integration of CAD and CAE.Parametric design is a mainstream and successful method in CAD field. This method is not continued in simulation and optimization stage because of the model conversion in conventional optimization method based on the finite element analysis. So integration of the parametric modeling and the structural optimization by using isogeometric analysis is a natural and interesting issue. This paper proposed a method to realize a structural optimization of parametric complex shapes by using isogeometric analysis.By the given feature curves and the constraints,a feature frame model is built.Based on the feature frame model,a parametric representation of complex shape is obtained. After adding some auxiliary curves, the feature frame model is divided into many box-like patches in three dimension or four-sided patches in two dimension. These patches are built into parametric patches by using volume interpolation methods such as Coons method.Based on the parametric patches, isogeometic analysis is applied. Thus, the relationships are constructed among the size parameters, the control points and the physical performance parameters. Then the sensitivity matrix could be derived based on the relationships. The size optimization is carried out in the first stage by taking the size parameters as variables.Based on the result of size optimization, shape optimization with the constraints of stress is carried out in the second stage by taking the control points as variables.Serval planar complex shapes are taken as example to verify our method. The results verify that the parametric modeling and structural optimization can be united together without model conversion.Benefit from this, the optimization design can be executed as a dark box operation without considering the concrete modeling and analysis by input of the sizes, constraints and loads. 展开更多

An axisymmetrical unit cell model was used to represent a bimodal Al alloy that was composed of both nano-grained (NG) and coarse-grained (CG) aluminum. Effects of microstructural and materials parameters on tensile properties of bimodal AI alloy were investigated by finite element method (FEM). The parameters analyzed included aspect ratios of CG Al and the unit cell, volume fraction of CG Al (VFCG), and yield strength and strain hardening exponent of CG Al. Aspect ratios of CG Al and the unit cell have no significant influence on tensile stress-strain response of the bimodal Al alloy. This phenomenon derives from the similarity in elastic modulus and coefficient of thermal expansion between CG AI and NG Al. Conversely, tensile properties of bimodal Al alloy are extremely sensitive to VFCG, yield strength and strain hardening exponent of CG Al. Specifically, as VFCG increases, both yield strength and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the bimodal Al alloy decreases, while uniform strain of bimodal AI alloy increases. In addition, an increase in yield strength of CG Al results in an increase in both yield stress and UTS of bimodal AI alloy and a decrease in uniform strain of bimodal Al alloy. The lower capability in lowering the increase of stress concentration in NG Al due to a higher yield strength of CG Al causes the lower uniform strain of the bimodal AI alloy. When strain hardening exponent of CG Al increases, 0.2% yield stress, UTS, and uniform strain of the bimodal Al alloy increases. This can be attributed to the increased work-hardening ability of CG Al with a higher strain hardening exponent. 展开更多

Loal flexibility of tubular joints has important effect on the static and dynamic behaviour of offshore platforms, therefore, the determination of it becomes an important research subject in the field of offshore engineering. In this paper, the local flexibility of TY-type tubular joints, which are widely used in offshore platforms, is calculated by using semi- analytical method. Based on the calculated results, parametric formulae for evaluating element in the local joint flexibility matrix of TY- type tubular joints are derived by regression. A test on PVC models of TY-type tubular joints to measure the local joint flexibility is also reported. A comparison of the results calculated from the parametric formulae presented in this paper with those measured from the model test shows that the parametric formulae are reliable. It is recommended that these formulae be used in the global structural analysis of offshore platforms. 展开更多

With a geometrical model of porous material, a 3D finite-element analysis on the rolling process of spring steel60Si2Mn in the semi-solid state is carried out using software MARC. In terms of flat and groove rolling conditions, stress field and strain field are studied. The simulation results show that the rigid-viscoplastic model can accuratelydescribe the semi-solid metal rolling process. Semi-solid slurry has the characteristics of low flow stress and goodfluidity. During groove rolling, distribution of stress and strain on the cross-section of deformation zone is moreuniform than that during flat rolling. The results of simulation are in good agreement with the experiment data, andshow that semi-solid material fits for groove rolling. 展开更多

Its main demerit is the big hyperbolic error which is caused in the process of processing cone, but about the discussion of hyperbolic error, there are two drawbacks in the current books and documents: (1) The error measuring plane is established on the rake face of tool, which doesn’t coincide with the actual measuring plane (axial plane) of work piece; (2) When the influential elements of error are analyzed, single parameter is only discussed. In order to overcome these demerits, the mathematical model of hyperbolic error on the axial plane of work piece is built in this paper when round body form tool processes cone. The fundamental reason which causes hyperbolic error when round body form tool processes cone is that the line profile replaces the curve profile of theory in the radial cut plane of tool in the design and manufacture of tool. In order to evaluate the mathematical formula of its error, firstly, the equation of cone of work piece must be established, secondly, the equation of cutting lip in the rake face is established, then, the profile equation of the radial plane of tool is evaluated on the condition that coordinate is changed, at last, the hyperbolic error is derived according to the equation and the substitutional line equation, and the error is converted to the axial plane of work piece which is coincided with the measuring plane. The actual calculation and the theory analysis indicated that if the cone length and the coning of the cone of work piece are fixed, the main elements which affect the hyperbolic error in the axial plane of work piece are the outside diameter R of round body form tool, the rake angle and the rear angle in "base point". If these three parameters are combined rationally, the hyperbolic error is minimum when round body form tool process cone, and the machining precision of work piece can be improved, on the condition that neither the work capacity of the tool design nor the manufacture cost of tool increases. 展开更多

In order to reduce the wheel profile wear of highspeed trains and extend the service life of wheels, a dynamic model for a high-speed vehicle was set up, in which the wheelset was regarded as flexible body, and the actual measured track irregularities and line conditions were considered. The wear depth of the wheel profile was calculated by the well-known Archard wear law. Through this model, the influence of the wheel profile, primary suspension stiffness, track gage, and rail cant on the wear of wheel profile were studied through multiple iterafive calculations. Numerical simulation results show that the type XP55 wheel profile has the smallest cumulative wear depth, and the type LM wheel profile has the largest wear depth. To reduce the wear of the wheel profile, the equivalent conicity of the wheel should not be too large or too small. On the other hand, a small primary vertical stiffness, a track gage around 1,435-1,438 mm, and a rail cant around 1:35-1:40 are beneficial for dynamic performance improvement and wheel wear alleviation. 展开更多

A new finite element method (FEM) of B-spline wavelet on the interval (BSWI) is proposed. Through analyzing the scaling functions of BSWI in one dimension, the basic formula for 2D FEM of BSWI is deduced. The 2D FEM of 7 nodes and 10 nodes are constructed based on the basic formula. Using these proposed elements, the multiscale numerical model for foundation subjected to harmonic periodic load, the foundation model excited by external and internal dynamic load are studied. The results show the pro- posed finite elements have higher precision than the tradi- tional elements with 4 nodes. The proposed finite elements can describe the propagation of stress waves well whenever the foundation model excited by extemal or intemal dynamic load. The proposed finite elements can be also used to con- nect the multi-scale elements. And the proposed finite elements also have high precision to make multi-scale analysis for structure. 展开更多

Excessive vibration of aircraft wings during flight is harmful and may cause propagation of existing cracks in the material, leading to catastrophic failures as a result of material fatigue. This study investigates the variations of modal characteristics of aircraft wings with respect to changes in the structural configurations. We develop parametric Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models to capture new design intend on the aircraft wing architectures. Subsequent Finite Element Analysis (FEA) based vibration analysis is performed to study the effects of architecture changes on the wing’s natural frequencies and mode shapes. It is concluded that the spar placement and the number of ribs have significant influence on the wing’s natural vibration properties. Integrating CAD modelling and FEA vibration analysis enables designers to develop alternative wing architectures to implement design requirements in the preliminary design stage. 展开更多

In a full-arch implant rehabilitation ad modum Branemark, the distribution of stress and strain in mandibular bone is influenced by the type, number and position of implants used. In particular, the biomechanical behaviour of the bone structure after complete osseointegration depends on the load transferred to the bone by each fixture. In this study, a finite-element analysis of two models was performed. Models of an all-on-four configuration and a six-implant configuration were compared in a worst-case scenario. A new V parameter is presented to aid the quantitative and comparative analysis of the all-on-four and six-implant configurations. The influence of orthotropy was also investigated, and a geometric change in the all-on-four configuration is presented. 展开更多

In this paper, the requirements of data extraction in 1-D heat transfer analysis are taken into consideration as well as geometric representation in parametric design process. An improved turbine blade parametric modeling method is proposed. Integral abutment bridges(IABs) are jointless bridges where the girder or the deck is continuous and connected monolithically to the abutments.A usual and important problem in the design of IABs is how to deal with the soil-structure interaction behind the abutments and next to the foundation piles: this can be considered as a fundamental aspect for the thorough understanding of this type of structures, which requires iterative and nonlinear analysis. In this paper,a 2D simplified finite-element model of a real 400 meters long IAB,built in the Province of Verona-Italy,is implemented and used to perform non linear analysis on the bridge, whose superstructure response is examined in details in the present paper. Then, the results obtained from a parametric study on the IAB,where the soil properties are varied behind the backwall and adjacent to the piles are varied, are described. In the end,a pushover analysis is carried out to assess the failure pattern of the bridge due to temperature change, considered as one of the key parameters in IABs design;finally, the effect of abutment stiffness is also discussed. The case study presented represents the world record for this kind of bridges.Authors believe this can be a cost effective and an efficient strategy to improve the durability and extend the life span of commonly built simply supported flyovers prone to maintenance problems due to bearings and expansion joints durability. 展开更多

Despite the prevalence and validity of the universal distinct element code(UDEC)in simulations in geotechnics domain,water-weakening process of rock models remains elusive.Prior research has made positive contributions to a presupposed link between modelling parameters and saturation degree,Sr.Nevertheless, this effort presents inaccurate results and limited implications owing to the misleading interpretation, that is,devoid of the basic logic in UDEC that modelling parameters should be calibrated by tested macroscopic properties in contrast to a presupposed relation with Sr.To fill this gap,a new methodology is proposed by coupling a computationally efficient parametric study with the simulation of water-weakening mechanisms.More specifically, tested macroscopic properties with different Sr values are input into parametric relations to acquire initial modelling parameters that are sequentially calibrated and modulated until simulations are in line with geomechanical tests.Illustrative example reveals that numerical water-weakening effects on macroscopic properties, mechanical behaviours, and failure configurations are highly consistent with tested ones with noticeable computational expediency, implying the feasibility and simplicity of this methodology.Furthermore, with compatibility across various numerical models, the proposed methodology substantially extends the applicability of UDEC in simulating water-weakening geotechnical problems. 展开更多

Accurate determination of rock mass parameters is essential for ensuring the accuracy of numericalsimulations. Displacement back-analysis is the most widely used method;however, the reliability of thecurrent approaches remains unsatisfactory. Therefore, in this paper, a multistage rock mass parameterback-analysis method, that considers the construction process and displacement losses is proposed andimplemented through the coupling of numerical simulation, auto-machine learning (AutoML), andmulti-objective optimization algorithms (MOOAs). First, a parametric modeling platform for mechanizedtwin tunnels is developed, generating a dataset through extensive numerical simulations. Next, theAutoML method is utilized to establish a surrogate model linking rock parameters and displacements. The tunnel construction process is divided into multiple stages, transforming the rock mass parameterback-analysis into a multi-objective optimization problem, for which multi-objective optimization algorithmsare introduced to obtain the rock mass parameters. The newly proposed rock mass parameterback-analysis method is validated in a mechanized twin tunnel project, and its accuracy and effectivenessare demonstrated. Compared with traditional single-stage back-analysis methods, the proposedmodel decreases the average absolute percentage error from 12.73% to 4.34%, significantly improving theaccuracy of the back-analysis. Moreover, although the accuracy of back analysis significantly increaseswith the number of construction stages considered, the back analysis time is acceptable. This studyprovides a new method for displacement back analysis that is efficient and accurate, thereby paving theway for precise parameter determination in numerical simulations. 展开更多
