The poor electrical conductivity of metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)limits their electrocatalytic performance in the oxygen evolution reaction(OER).In this study,a Py@Co-MOF composite material based on pyrene(Py)molecules and{[Co2(BINDI)(DMA)_(2)]·DMA}_(n)(Co-MOF,H4BINDI=N,N'-bis(5-isophthalic acid)naphthalenediimide,DMA=N,N-dimethylacetamide)was synthesized via a one-pot method,leveragingπ-πinteractions between pyrene and Co-MOF to modulate electrical conductivity. Results demonstrate that the Py@Co-MOF catalyst exhibited significantly enhanced OER performance compared to pure Co-MOF or pyrene-based electrodes, achieving an overpotential of 246 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm^(-2) along with excellent stability.Density functional theory(DFT)calculations reveal that the formation of O*in the second step is the rate-determining step(RDS)during the OER process on Co-MOF,with an energy barrier of 0.85 eV due to the weak adsorption affinity of the OH*intermediate for Co sites.CCDC:2419276. 展开更多

Developing efficient and durable electrocatalysts for acidic oxygen evolution reaction(OER)is pivotal for advancing proton exchange membrane water electrolysis(PEMWEs),yet balancing activity and stability remains a formidable challenge.Herein,we propose a dual-engineering strategy to stabilize Ru-based catalysts by synergizing the oxygen vacancy site-synergized mechanism-lattice oxygen mechanism(OVSM-LOM)with Ru-N bond stabilization. The engineered RuO_(2)@NCC catalyst exhibits exceptional OER performance in 0.5 M H2SO4,achieving an ultralow overpotential of 215 mV at 10 mA cm^(-2) and prolonged stability for over 327 h.The catalyst delivers 300 h of continuous operation at 1 A cm^(-2),with a negligible degradation rate of only 0.067 mV h-1,further demonstrating its potential for practical application.Oxygen vacancies unlock the OVSM-LOM pathway, bypassing the sluggish adsorbate evolution mechanism(AEM)and accelerating reaction kinetics, while the Ru-N bonds suppress Ru dissolution by anchoring low-valent Ru centers.Quasi-in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS),and isotopic labeling experiments confirm the lattice oxygen participation with *O formation as the rate-determining step. The Ru-N bonds reinforce the structural integrity by stabilizing low-valent Ru centers and inhibiting overoxidation.Theoretical calculations further verify that the synergistic interaction between OVs and Ru-O(N)active sites optimizes the Ru d-band center and stabilizes intermediates, while Ru-N coordination enhances structural integrity. This study establishes a novel paradigm for designing robust acidic OER catalysts through defect and coordination engineering, bridging the gap between activity and stability for sustainable energy technologies. 展开更多

Heteroatom-doped carbon is considered a promising alternative to commercial Pt/C as an efficient catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).This study presents the synthesis of iron-loaded,sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon(Fe/SNC)via in situ incorporation of 2-aminothiazole molecules into zeolitic imidazolate framework-8(ZIF-8)through coordination between metal ions and organic ligands.Sulfur and nitrogen doping in carbon supports effectively modulates the electronic structure of the catalyst, increases the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, and exposes more Fe-N_(x)active centers.Fe-loaded,S and N co-doped carbon with Fe/S molar ratio of 1:10(Fe/SNC-10)exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.902 V vs.RHE.After 5000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry, its half-wave potential decreases by only 20 mV vs.RHE,indicating excellent stability.Due to sulfur s lower electronegativity, the electronic structure of the Fe-N_(x)active center is modulated.Additionally, the larger atomic radius of sulfur introduces defects into the carbon support. As a result,Fe/SNC-10 demonstrates superior ORR activity and stability in alkaline solution compared with Fe-loaded N-doped carbon(Fe/NC).Furthermore,the zinc-air battery assembled with the Fe/SNC-10 catalyst shows enhanced performance relative to those assembled with Fe/NC and Pt/C catalysts. This work offers a novel design strategy for advanced energy storage and conversion applications. 展开更多

Sulfur-doped iron-cobalt tannate nanorods(S-FeCoTA)derived from metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)as electrocatalysts were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. The optimized S-FeCoTA was interlaced by loose nanorods, which had many voids. The S-FeCoTA catalysts exhibited excellent electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction(OER)performance with a low overpotential of 273 mV at 10 mA·cm^(-2)and a small Tafel slope of 36 mV·dec^(-1)in 1 mol·L^(-1)KOH.The potential remained at 1.48 V(vs RHE)at 10 mA·cm^(-2)under continuous testing for 15 h,implying that S-FeCoTA had good stability. The Faraday efficiency of S-FeCoTA was 94%.The outstanding OER activity of S-FeCoTA is attributed to the synergistic effects among S,Fe,and Co,thus promoting electron transfer, reducing the reaction kinetic barrier, and enhancing the OER performance. 展开更多

Exploiting non-precious metal catalysts with excellent oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)performance for energy devices is paramount essential for the green and sustainable society development.Herein,low-cost,high-performance biomass-derived ORR catalysts with an asymmetric Fe-N_(3)P configuration was prepared by a simple pyrolysis-etching technique, where carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC)was used as the carbon source, urea and 1,10-phenanthroline iron complex(FePhen)as additives, and Na_(3)PO_(4)as the phosphorus dopant and a pore-forming agent. The CMC-derived FeNPC catalyst displayed a large specific area(BET:1235 m^(2)g^(-1))with atomically dispersed Fe-N_(3)P active sites, which exhibited superior ORR activity and stability in alkaline solution(E_(1/2)=0.90 V vs.RHE)and Zn-air batteries(P_(max)=149 mW cm^(-2))to commercial Pt/C catalyst(E_(1/2)=0.87 V,P_(max)=118 mW cm^(-2))under similar experimental conditions. This work provides a feasible and costeffective route toward highly efficient ORR catalysts and their application to Zn-air batteries for energy conversion. 展开更多

Oxygen release and electrolyte decomposition under high voltage endlessly exacerbate interfacial ramifications and structu ral degradation of high energy-density Li-rich layered oxide(LLO),leading to voltage and capacity fading.Herein, the dual-strategy of Cr,B complex coating and local gradient doping is simultaneously achieved on LLO surface by a one-step wet chemical reaction at room temperature.Density functional theory(DFT)calculations prove that stable B-O and Cr-O bonds through the local gradient doping can significantly reduce the high-energy O 2p states of interfacial lattice O,which is also effective for the near-surface lattice O,thus greatly stabilizing the LLO surface,Besides, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry(DEMS)indicates that the Cr_(x)B complex coating can adequately inhibit oxygen release and prevents the migration or dissolution of transition metal ions, including allowing speedy Li^(+)migration,The voltage and capacity fading of the modified cathode(LLO-C_(r)B)are adequately suppressed, which are benefited from the uniformly dense cathode electrolyte interface(CEI)composed of balanced organic/inorganic composition. Therefore, the specific capacity of LLO-CrB after 200 cycles at 1C is 209.3 mA h g^(-1)(with a retention rate of 95.1%).This dual-strategy through a one-step wet chemical reaction is expected to be applied in the design and development of other anionic redox cathode materials. 展开更多

Nitrogen-doping of carbon support(N-C)for platinum(Pt)nanoparticles to form Pt/N-C catalyst represents an effective strategy to promote the electrocatalysis of cathodic oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. For fundamental understanding, clearly identifying the metalsupport effect on enhancement mechanisms of ORR electrocatalysis is definitely needed. In this work, the impact of Pt-support interaction via interfacial Pt-N coordination on electrocatalytic ORR activity and stability in Pt/N-C catalyst is deeply studied through structural/compositional characterizations, electrochemical measurements and theoretical DFT-calculations/AIMD-simulations.The resulting Pt/N-C catalyst exhibits a superior electrocatalytic performance compared to the commercial Pt/C catalyst in both half-cell and H_(2)-O_(2)fuel cell.Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the interfacial Pt-N coordination enables electron transfer from N-C support to Pt nanoparticles, which can weaken the adsorption strength of oxygen intermediates on Pt surface to improve ORR activity and induce the strong Pt-support interaction to enhance electrochemical stability. 展开更多

The development of an e fficacious and easily prepared no nprecious metal electrocatalyst is crucial for the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).This work used a dual template method to prepare the amorphous rare earth-based catalyst PrO_(x)-NC,and optimized the calcination temperature and proportion. The PrO_(x)-NC-900 catalyst has high durability and activity and exhibits superior ORR performance in alkaline electrolytes with an onset potential(E_(0))of 0.96 V and a half-wave potential(E_(1/2))of 0.85 V.The research results indicate that the ORR performance of rare earth oxide composite carbon catalysts can be improved by adjusting oxygen vacancies(Ov).In addition, high specific surface area,N rich defect carbon.increased oxygen vacancies, and the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies and N-doped carbon interfacial layer play a significant part in the enhancement of ORR.The performance of the zinc air battery assembled with PrO_(x)-NC-900 is significantly improved, and rare earth oxides and carbon frameworks originating from metal organic frameworks(MOFs)contribute to the oxygen electrocatalyst and electron transfer rate of the zinc air battery. This catalyst provides promising information for the development of rare earth metal oxide nanostructures as potential candidate materials for ORR in alkaline media. 展开更多

The development of highly active, durable, and low-cost electrocatalysts is crucial for electrocatalytic hydrogen production. Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have extremely large specific surface areas, making them highly desirable electrocatalyst morphologies. Medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) exhibit compositional tunability and entropy-driven structural stability, making them ideal electrocatalyst candidates. In this study, MoCoNi MEA with ultrathin 2D morphology was successfully developed using a facile ionic lay-er epitaxial method. The ultrathin 2D MoCoNi MEA showed an excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalytic performance, with a low overpotential of 167 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm^(2) and small Tafel slope of 33.2 mV/dec. At the overpotential of 167 mV, the ultrathin 2D MoCoNi MEA exhibited ultrahigh mass activity of 3359.6 A/g, which is three orders of magnitude higher than that of the commercial noble metal oxide RuO_(2) (1.15 A/g). This excellent electrocatalytic performance was attributed to the synergy of multiple active metal-induced medium entropies, as well as the ultrathin thickness, which considerably shortened the charge-transfer dis-tance and thus significantly promoted charge transfer. Owing to the natural entropy-stabilizing effect, the ultrathin 2D MoCoNi MEA maintained 90% of the initial current after a continuous OER electrocatalytic test for 134 h, showing impressive electrocatalytic stability. This study opens new avenues for the development of high-performance and low-cost electrocatalyst materials by creating MEAs with ultrathin 2D morphology. 展开更多

Anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzers(AEMWEs)for green hydrogen production have received intensive attention due to their feasibility of using earth-abundant NiFe-based catalysts.By introducing a third metal into NiFe-based catalysts to construct asymmetrical M-NiFe units, the d-orbital and electronic structures can be adjusted, which is an important strategy to achieve sufficient oxygen evolution reaction(OER)performance in AEMWEs.Herein, the ternary NiFeM(M:La,Mo)catalysts featured with distinct M-NiFe units and varying d-orbitals are reported in this work.Experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that the doping of La leads to optimized hybridization between d orbital in NiFeM and 2p in oxygen, resulting in enhanced adsorption strength of oxygen intermediates, and reduced rate-determining step energy barrier, which is responsible for the enhanced OER performance.More critically, the obtained NiFeLa catalyst only requires 1.58 V to reach 1 A cm^(−2) in an anion exchange membrane electrolyzer and demonstrates excellent long-term stability of up to 600 h. 展开更多

Alloying transition metals with Pt is an effective strategy for optimizing Pt-based catalysts toward the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).Atomic ordered intermetallic compounds(IMC)provide unique electronic and geometrical effects as well as stronger intermetallic interactions due to the ordered arrangement of metal atoms, thus exhibiting superior electrocata-lytic activity and durability. However, quantitatively analyzing the ordering degree of IMC and exploring the correlation between the ordering degree and ORR activity remains extremely challenging.Herein,a series of ternary Pt_(2)NiCo interme-tallic catalysts(o-Pt_(2)NiCo)with different ordering degree were synthesized by annealing temperature modulation.Among them, the o-Pt_(2)NiCo which annealed at 800℃for two hours exhibits the highest ordering degree and the optimal ORR ac-tivity,which the mass activity of o-Pt_(2)NiCo is 1.8 times and 2.8 times higher than that of disordered Pt_(2)NiCo alloy and Pt/C.Furthermore,the o-Pt_(2)NiCo still maintains 70.8%mass activity after 30,000 potential cycles.Additionally, the ORR activity test results for Pt_(2)NiCo IMC with different ordering degree also provide a positive correlation between the ordering degree and ORR activity. This work provides a prospective design direction for ternary Pt-based electrocatalysts. 展开更多

The poor electronic conductivity of metal-organic framework(MOF)materials hinders their direct application in the field of electrocatalysis in fuel cells.Herein,we proposed a strategy of embedding carbon nanotubes(CNTs)during the growth process of MOF crystals, synthesizing a metalloporphyrin-based MOF catalyst TCPPCo-MOF-CNT with a unique CNT-intercalated MOF structure.Physical characterization revealed that the CNTs enhance the overall conductivity while retaining the original characteristics of the MOF and metalloporphyrin.Simultaneously, the insertion of CNTs generated adequate mesopores and created a hierarchical porous structure that enhances mass transfer efficiency.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis confirmed that the C atom in CNT changed the electron cloud density on the catalytic active center Co,optimizing the electronic structure.Consequently, the E_(1/2) of the TCPPCo-MOF-CNT catalyst under neutral conditions reached 0.77 V(vs.RHE),outperforming the catalyst without CNTs.When the TCPPCo-MOF-CNT was employed as the cathode catalyst in assembling microbial fuel cells(MFCs)with Nafion-117 as the proton exchange membrane, the maxi-mum power density of MFCs reached approximately 500 mW·m^(-2). 展开更多

Through employing zeolitic imidazolate framework-67(ZIF-67)templates,the straightforward hydrother-mal and electrodeposition methods were applied to synthesize FeOOH@CoMoO_(4)heterostructure attached to the sur-face of nickel foam(NF).The specific structure of the as-prepared FeOOH@CoMoO_(4)/NF-400s provided pronounced porosity and extensive surface area, enhancing rapid electron transport and exposing abundant active sites to improve catalytic reactions.Furthermore, the introduction of FeOOH,which induces electron transfer from FeOOH to CoMoO_(4),confirms their strong electronic interaction, thereby leading to an accelerated surface catalytic reaction.Consequently, the constructed FeOOH@CoMoO_(4)/NF-400s heterostructure demonstrated exceptional oxygen evolu-tion reaction(OER)activity, requiring an overpotential of 199 mV to deliver the current density of 10 mA·cm^(-2),cou-pled with the superior Tafel slope value of 49.56 mV·dec^(-1)and outstanding stability over 20 h under the current densities of both 10 and 100 mA·cm^(-2). 展开更多

The weak adsorption energy of oxygen-containing intermediates on Co center leads to a considerable performance dis-parity between Co-N-C and costly Pt benchmark in catalyzing oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).In this work,we strategi-cally engineer the active site structure of Co-N-C via B substitution, which is accomplished by the pyrolysis of ammonium borate.During this process, the in-situ generated NH_(3)gas plays a critical role in creating surface defects and boron atoms substituting nitrogen atoms in the carbon structure. The well-designed CoB_(1)N_(3)active site endows Co with higher charge density and stronger adsorption energy toward oxygen species, potentially accelerating ORR kinetics. As expected, the resulting Co-B/N-C catalyst exhibited superior ORR performance over Co-N-C counterpart, with 40 mV,and fivefold en-hancement in half-wave potential and turnover frequency(TOF).More importantly, the excellent ORR performance could be translated into membrane electrode assembly(MEA)in a fuel cell test, delivering an impressive peak power density of 824 mW·cm^(-2),which is currently the best among Co-based catalysts under the same conditions. This work not only demon-strates an effective method for designing advanced catalysts, but also affords a highly promising non-precious metal ORR electrocatalyst for fuel cell applications. 展开更多

Development of robust electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)in a seawater electrolyte is the key to realize seawater electrolyte-based zinc-air batteries(SZABs).Herein, constructing a local electric field coupled with chloride ions(Cl-)fixation strategy in dual single-atom catalysts(DSACs)was proposed, and the resultant catalyst delivered considerable ORR performance in a seawater electrolyte, with a high half-wave potential(E_(1/2))of 0.868 V and a good maximum power density(Pmax)of 182 mW·cm^(−2)in the assembled SZABs,much higher than those of the Pt/C catalyst(E_(1/2):0.846 V;Pmax:150 mW·cm^(−2)).The in-situ characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that the Fe sites have a higher Cl^(−)adsorption affinity than the Co sites, and preferentially adsorbs Cl^(−)in a seawater electrolyte during the ORR process, and thus constructs a low-concentration Cl^(−)local microenvironment through the common-ion exclusion effect, which prevents Cl^(−)adsorption and corrosion in the Co active centers, achieving impressive catalytic stability. In addition, the directional charge movement between Fe and Co atomic pairs establishes a local electric field, optimizing the adsorption energy of Co sites for oxygen-containing intermediates, and further improving the ORR activity. 展开更多

The nitrogen-coordinated metal single-atom catalysts(M−N−C SACs)with an ultra-high metal loading synthetized by direct high-temperature pyrolysis have been widely reported. However, most of metal single atoms in these catalysts were buried in the carbon matrix, resulting in a low metal utilization and inaccessibility for adsorption of reactants during the catalytic process.Herein,we reported a facile synthesis based on the hard-soft acid-base(HSAB)theory to fabricate Co single-atom catalysts with highly exposed metal atoms ligated to the external pyridinic-N sites of a nitrogen-doped carbon support.Benefiting from the highly accessible Co active sites, the prepared Co−N−C SAC exhibited a superior oxygen reduction reactivity comparable to that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst, showing a high turnover frequency(TOF)of 0.93 e^(−)·s^(-1)·site^(-1)at 0.85 V vs.RHE,far exceeding those of some representative SACs with a ultra-high metal content. This work provides a rational strategy to design and prepare M−N−C single-atom catalysts featured with high site-accessibility and site-density. 展开更多

The development of highly active catalyst in pH-neutral media for oxygen evolution reaction(OER)is critical in the field of renewable energy storage and conversion.Nevertheless, the slow kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer(PCET)hinders the overall OER efficiency.Herein,we report an ionic liquid(IL)modified CoSn(OH)_(6)nanocubes(denoted as CoS-n(OH)_(6)-IL),which could be prepared through a facile strategy. The modified IL would not change the structural character-istics of CoSn(OH)_(6),but could effectively regulate the local proton activity near the active sites. The CoSn(OH)_(6)-IL exhibited higher intrinsic OER performances than the pristine CoSn(OH)_(6)in neutral media. For example, the current density of CoS-n(OH)_(6)-IL at 1.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE)was about 4 times higher than that of CoSn(OH)_(6).According to the pH-dependent kinetic investigations, operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopic, chemical probe tests, and deuterium kinetic isotope effects, the interfacial layer of IL could be utilized as a proton transfer mediator to promote the proton transfer, which enhances the surface coverage of OER intermediates and reduces the activation barrier.Consequent-ly,the sluggish OER kinetics would be efficiently accelerated. This study provides a facile and effective strategy to facilitate the PCET processes and is beneficial to guide the rational design of OER electrocatalysts. 展开更多

Designing highly active electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)and oxygen evolution and reduction reactions(OER and ORR)is pivotal to renewable energy technology.Herein, based on density functional theory(DFT)calculations,we systematically investigate the catalytic activity of iron-nitrogen-carbon based covalent organic frameworks(COF)monolayers with axially coordinated ligands(denotes as Fe N_(4)-X@COF,X refers to axial ligand,X=-SCN,-I,-H,-SH,-NO_(2),-Br,-ClO,-Cl,-HCO_(3),-NO,-ClO_(2),-OH,-CN and-F).The calculated results demonstrate that all the catalysts possess good thermodynamic and electrochemical stabilities. The different ligands axially ligated to the Fe active center could induce changes in the charge of the Fe center, which further regulates the interaction strength between intermediates and catalysts that governs the catalytic activity.Importantly,FeN_(4)-SH@COF and Fe N_(4)-OH@COF are efficient bifunctional catalysts for HER and OER,FeN_(4)-OH@COF and FeN_(4)-I@COF are promising bifunctional catalysts for OER and ORR.These findings not only reveal promising bifunctional HER/OER and OER/ORR catalysts but also provide theoretical guidance for designing optimum ironnitrogen-carbon based catalysts. 展开更多

Hydrogen production from water electrolysis,in particular from proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers(PEMWE),is a key approach to realizing a carbon-free energy cycle. However, the high anodic potential and strong acid in PEMWE systems pose a major challenge to the stability of electrocatalysts, and the development of efficient and corrosion-resistant catalysts is urgently needed.Currently,iridium(Ir)-based catalysts have gained great attention due to their promising activity and stability, while the extremely low reserves of Ir in the earth seriously hinder the commercialization of PEMWE.Therefore,a systematic understanding of the latest advances in Ir-based catalysts is necessary to guide their rational design to meet the industrial requirements. In this review, the general reaction mechanisms and advanced characterization techniques for mechanism recognition are first introduced.Afterwards, the systematic design strategies and performances of Ir-based catalysts, including metallic Ir,Ir oxides, and Ir-based perovskites, are summarized in detail. Finally, the conclusions, challenges, and prospects for Ir-based electrocatalysts are presented. 展开更多

Efficient catalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)and oxygen evolution reaction(OER)is essential for the rechargeable zinc-air batteries(R-ZABs).However,challenges remain due to the scarcity of effective bifunctional electrocatalysts and limited understanding of the structure-activity relationships.Pyrrole-type single-atom catalysts(SACs)with unique electronic structures have emerged as promising electrocatalysts. In this work,we combine density functional theory(DFT)calculations and experimental studies to systematically explore the structure-activity relationships and potential of pyrrole-type transition metal-N_(3)(TM-po-N_(3))as bifunctional catalysts.DFT calculations reveal that differences in the dependence of ORR and OER activities on the free energy of adsorption of reaction intermediates significantly affect the TM-po-N_(3)bifunctional activity and identify magnetic Cu-po-N_(3)as the best candidate. The bifunctional activity of Cu-po-N_(3)originates from interactions between spin-polarized out-of-plane Cu_3d and O_2s+2p orbitals.Theoretical predictions are validated experimentally, showing that the synthesized Cu-SAC/NC exhibits excellent bifunctional performance with a small potential gap of 0.666 V.Additionally, the assembled R-ZABs display a high-power density of 170 mW cm^(-2)and long-term stability, with the charge-discharge voltage gap increasing by only 0.01 V over 240 h.This work provides new insights into the design of efficient bifunctional catalysts. 展开更多
