Deep learning(DL),derived from the domain of Artificial Neural Networks(ANN),forms one of the most essential components of modern deep learning algorithms.DL segmentation models rely on layer-by-layer convolution-based feature representation, guided by forward and backward propagation.Acritical aspect of this process is the selection of an appropriate activation function(AF)to ensure robustmodel learning. However, existing activation functions often fail to effectively address the vanishing gradient problem or are complicated by the need for manual parameter tuning. Most current research on activation function design focuses on classification tasks using natural image datasets such asMNIST,CIFAR-10,and CIFAR-100.To address this gap, this study proposesMed-ReLU,a novel activation function specifically designed for medical image segmentation.Med-ReLU prevents deep learning models fromsuffering dead neurons or vanishing gradient issues. It is a hybrid activation function that combines the properties of ReLU and Softsign. For positive inputs,Med-ReLU adopts the linear behavior of ReLU to avoid vanishing gradients, while for negative inputs,it exhibits the Softsign’s polynomial convergence, ensuring robust training and avoiding inactive neurons across the training set.The training performance and segmentation accuracy ofMed-ReLU have been thoroughly evaluated, demonstrating stable learning behavior and resistance to overfitting. It consistently outperforms state-of-the-art activation functions inmedical image segmentation tasks.Designed as a parameter-free function,Med-ReLU is simple to implement in complex deep learning architectures, and its effectiveness spans various neural network models and anomaly detection scenarios. 展开更多

The stability of a periodic oscillation and the global exponential class of recurrent neural networks with non-monotone activation functions and time-varying delays are analyzed. For two sets of activation functions, some algebraic criteria for ascertaining global exponential periodicity and global exponential stability of the class of recurrent neural networks are derived by using the comparison principle and the theory of monotone operator. These conditions are easy to check in terms of system parameters. In addition, we provide a new and efficacious method for the qualitative analysis of various neural networks. 展开更多

Mental practice is a new rehabilitation method that reters to the mental rehearsal ot motor imagery content with the goal of improving motor performance. However, the relationship between activated regions and motor recovery after mental practice training is not well understood. In this study, 15 patients who suffered a firstever subcortical stroke with neurological deficits affecting the right hand, but no significant cognitive impairment were recruited. 10 patients underwent mental practice combined with physical practice training, and 5 patients only underwent physical practice training. We observed brain activation regions after 4 weeks of training, and explored the correlation of activation changes with functional recovery of the affected hands. The results showed that, after 4 weeks of mental practice combined with physical training, the Fugl-Meyer assessment score for the affected right hand was significantly increased than that after 4 weeks of practice training alone. Functional MRI showed enhanced activation in the left primary somatosensory cortex, attenuated activation intensity in the right primary motor cortex, and enhanced right cerebellar activation observed during the motor imagery task using the affected right hand after mental practice training. The changes in brain cortical activity were related to functional recovery of the hand. Experimental findings indicate that cortical and cerebellar functional reorganization following mental practice contributed to the improvement of hand function. 展开更多

Lowering the synthesis temperature of boron nitride nanotubes(BNNTs)is crucial for their development. The primary reason for adopting a high temperature is to enable the effective activation of highmelting-point solid boron. In this study,we developed a novel approach for efficiently activating boron by introducing alkali metal compounds into the conventional MgO–B system. This approach can be adopted to form various low-melting-point AM–Mg–B–O growth systems. These growth systems have improved catalytic capability and reactivity even under low-temperature conditions, facilitating the synthesis of BNNTs at temperatures as low as 850℃.In addition, molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory theoretically demonstrate that the systems maintain a liquid state at low temperatures and interact with N atoms to form BN chains. These findings offer novel insights into the design of boron activation and are expected to facilitate research on the low-temperature synthesis of BNNTs. 展开更多

Changes in activated areas of the brain during ankle active dorsiflexion and ankle active plantar flexion were observed in six healthy subjects using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Excited areas of ankle active dorsiflexion involved the bilateral primary motor area and the primary somatosensory area, as well as the bilateral supplementary sensory area, the primary visual area, the right second visual area, and the vermis of cerebellum. Excited areas of ankle active plantar flexion included the ipsilateral supplementary motor area, the limbic system, and the contralateral corpus striatum. Fine movements of the cerebral cortex control the function of the ankle dorsiflexion to a larger extent than ankle plate flexion, and the function of ankle plate flexion is more controlled by the subcortical area. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of studies have shown the effects of aging in basic cognitive processing and higher cognitive functions using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). However, little is known about the aging effects in diverse cognitive abilities, such as spatial learning and reasoning. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of aging on spatial cognitive performance and regional brain activation based on fMRI. DESIGN, TIME, AND SETTING: A block design for fMRI observation. This study was performed at the fMRI Laboratory, Brain Science Research Center, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology from March 2006 to May 2009. PARTICIPANTS: Eight right-handed, male, college students in their 20s (mean age 21.5 years) and six right-handed, male, adults in their 40s (mean age 45.7 years), who graduated from college, participated in the study. All subjects were healthy and had no prior history of psychiatric or neurological disorders. METHODS: A spatial task was presented while brain images were acquired using a 3T fMRI system (ISOL Technology, Korea). The spatial tasks involved selecting a shape that corresponded to a given figure using four examples, as well as selecting a development figure of a diagram. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The accuracy rate (number of correct answers/total number of items x 100%) of spatial tasks was calculated. Using the subtraction procedure, the activated areas in the brain during spatial tasks were color-coded by T-score. The double subtraction method was used to analyze the effect of aging between the two age groups (20s versus 40s). RESULTS: The cerebellum, occipital lobe, parietal lobe, and frontal lobe were similarly activated in the two age groups. Increased brain activations, however, were observed in bilateral parietal and superior frontal lobes of the younger group. More activation was observed in bilateral middle frontal and right inferior frontal lobes in the older group. Compared with the older group, the younger men exhibited greater spatial performance (P = 0.012). CONCLUSION: Reduced cognitive function correlated with decreased activation areas in the parietal lobe and altered activation in the frontal lobe. 展开更多

Many studies have investigated the evidence for tactile and visual interactive responses to activation of various brain regions. However, few studies have reported on the effects of visuo-tactile multisensory integration on the amount of brain activation on the somatosensory cortical regions. The aim of this study was to examine whether coincidental information obtained by tactile stimulation can affect the somatosensory cortical activation using functional MRI.Ten right-handed healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Two tasks(tactile stimulation and visuotactile stimulation)were performed using a block paradigm during f MRI scanning. In the tactile stimulation task,in subjects with eyes closed, tactile stimulation was applied on the dorsum of the right hand, corresponding to the proximal to distal directions, using a rubber brush. In the visuotactile stimulation task, tactile stimulation was applied to observe the attached mirror in the MRI chamber reflecting their hands being touched with the brush. In the result of SPM group analysis,we found brain activation on the somatosensory cortical area.Tactile stimulation task induced brain activations in the left primary sensory-motor cortex(SM1)and secondary somatosensory cortex(S2).In the visuo-tactile stimulation task, brain activations were observed in the both SM1,both S2,and right posterior parietal cortex. In all tasks, the peak activation was detected in the contralateral SM1.We examined the effects of visuo-tactile multisensory integration on the SM1 and found that visual information during tactile stimulation could enhance activations on SM1 compared to the tactile unisensory stimulation. 展开更多

It operates with complex-valued inputs, outputs, and weights, and its learning algorithm is based on error-correcting rule. The activation function of MVN is not differentiable. Therefore, we can not apply backpropagation when constructing multilayer structures. In this paper, we propose a new neuron model, MVN-sig, to simulate the mechanism of MVN with differentiable activation function. We expect MVN-sig to achieve higher performance than MVN. We run several classification benchmark datasets to compare the performance of MVN-sig with that of MVN. The experimental results show a good potential to develop a multilayer networks based on MVN-sig. 展开更多

Correlations among free radicals, apparent activation energy, and functional groups during lowtemperature oxidation of Jurassic coal in Northern Shaanxi were investigated by examining three coal samples collected from the Ningtiaota, Jianxin, and Shigetai coal mines. Free radical concentrations at less than 120 ℃ were investigated by electron spin resonance experiments while the thermogravimetric experiments were conducted to analyze apparent activation energies. In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was employed to study the spectrum of functional groups generated in coal. The results indicated that, in decreasing order, the apparent activation energies were Shigetai 〉Jianxin 〉 Ningtiaota, indicating that, from 50 to 120 ℃, the Ningtiaota coal sample most easily absorbed and reacted with oxygen while the most resistant was the Shigetai coal sample. Free radical concentrations and line heights increased with increased temperature, and the line width and Lande factor showed irregular fluctuations. Functional group variations were different among these coals, and the phenol and alcohol-associated OHs, carboxyls, and aromatic ring double bonds might have had a major impact on free radical concentrations. These results were meaningful for better consideration and management of coal oxidation at low temperatures. 展开更多

Somatosensory dys- function is a common problem following stroke. In partic- ular, somatosensory impairments, such as impairment in touch, proprioception, light touch, and vibration have been frequently observed (Carey et al., 1993; Sullivan and Hed- man, 2008; Tyson et al., 2008). Lithium-ion capacitors(LICs)combine the high power dens-ity of electrical double-layer capacitors with the high energy density of lithium-ion batteries. However, they face practical limitations due to the narrow operating voltage window of their activated carbon(AC)cathodes. We report a scalable thermal treatment strategy to develop high-voltage-tolerant AC cathodes.Through controlled thermal treatment of commer-cial activated carbon(Raw-AC)under a H_(2)/Ar atmosphere at 400-800℃,the targeted reduction of degradation-prone functional groups can be achieved while preserving the critical pore structure and increasing graph-itic microcrystalline ordering. The AC treated at 400℃(HAC-400)had a significant increase in specific capacity(96.0 vs.75.1 mAh/g at 0.05 A/g)and better rate capability(61.1 vs.36.1 mAh/g at 5 A/g)in half-cell LICs,along with an 83.5%capacity retention over 7400 cycles within an extended voltage range of 2.0-4.2 V in full-cell LICs.Scalability was demonstrated by a 120 g batch production, enabling fabrication of pouch-type LICs with commercial hard carbon anodes that delivered a higher energy density of 28.3 Wh/kg at 1 C,and a peak power density of 12.1 kW/kg compared to devices using raw AC.This simple,industry-compatible approach may be used for producing ad-vanced cathode materials for practical high-performance LICs. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: About more than three fourth of patients with stroke have motor dysfunction at different degrees, especially hand motor dysfunction. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provides very reliable visible evidence for studying central mechanism of motor dysfunction after stroke, and has guiding and applicable value for clinical therapy. OBJECTIVE: To observe the activation of motor-related cortex of patients with acute ischemic stroke with functional magnetic resonance imaging, and analyze the relationship between brain function reconstruction and motor restoration after stroke. DESIGN : A contrast observation SETTING: Medical Imaging Center, Fuzhou General Hospital of Nanjing Military Area Command of Chinese PLA. PARTICIPANTS : Nine patients with acute ischemic stroke who suffered from motor dysfunction and received the treatment in the Fuzhou General Hospital of Nanjing Military Area Command of Chinese PLA between August and December 2005 were recruited, serving as experimental group. The involved patients including 5 male and 4 female, aged 16 to 87 years, all met the diagnostic criteria of cerebrovascular disease revised by The Fourth National Conference on Cerebrovascular Disease, mainly presenting paralysis in clinic, and underwent fMRI. Another 9 right handed persons matched in age and gender who simultaneously received healthy body examination were recruited, serving as control group. All the subjects were informed of the detected items. METHODS : ①Muscular strength of patients of the experimental group was evaluated according to Brunnstrom grading muscular strength (Grade Ⅰ -Ⅳ). ②Passive finger to finger motion was used as the mission (alternate style of quiescence, left hand motion and quiescence, nght hand motion was repeated 3 times, serving as 1 sequence, 20 s per block and 20 s time interval. The whole process of scanning was 260 s), and subjects of 2 groups were given Bold-fMRI examination with GEl .5T double gradient 16-channel magnetic resonance imaging system. All the data were given off-line management, and fMRI was treated with SPM2 softwere. The activation of passive finger-to-finger motion-related cortex of subjects in 2 groups was observed. ③ Results of fMRI of subjects in 2 groups were compared. The size of activation region of brain and signal intensity were measured and unilateral index was calculated. The data of activation region of cerebral hemisphere of different sides at finger motion were given statistical analysis of unilateral index. Differences among unilateral indexes at hand motion were compared between intact and affected hands of patients in experimental group. The relationship between unilateral index and muscular strength of affected hands at affected hand motion in patients of the experimental group was performed Spearman correlation analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① The activation of motion-related cortex passive finger-to-finger motion between handedness and non-handedness was detected with functional magnetic resonance imaging of subjects in 2 groups. ②Relationship between unilateral index and muscular strength of subjects of experimental group at affected hand motion. RESULTS: Nine patients with ischemic stroke and 9 controls all participated in the final result analysis. ① Passive fMRI detection results between handedness and non-handedness of controls: Right-handed finger-to-finger motion of subjects of control group mainly activated contralateral sensonmotor cortex, and left-handed finger-to-finger motion not only activated above-mentioned brain region, but also activated supplementary motor area (SMA) of contralateral brain region; ②In the experimental group, sensorimotor cortex of contralateral hemisphere was activated at affected hand motion, and homolateral posterior parietal cortex (PPC)was also obviously activated. Bilateral sensonmotor cortex was activated at affected hand motion in 2 patients, and homolateral activation area was larger than contralateral one. At intact hand motion, contralateral sensorimotor cortex was activated, but no obvious homolateral activation area was found. ③ Correlation of unilateral index with muscular strength: Passive finger-to-finger fMRI ( between affected and intact hands of subjects of experimental group: Unilateral index at passive single finger motion of affected and intact hand of subjects of experimental group was -0.018±0.01 and 0.319±0.187, respectively, with significant difference (t=4.059, P 〈 0.01 ). Unilateral index was significantly positively correlated with the muscular strength of affected hand at affected hand motion(r=0.834, P 〈 0.05).CONCLUSION : ①fMRI can objectively shows different activation states of motor cortex between patients with ischemic stroke and healthy controls, and brain functional compensation and recombination exist. Both primary sensorimotor cortex and SMA of bilateral hemispheres participant in affected hand motion, at the same time, parietal lobe and cortex of intact side also obviously participant in the affected hand motion. ②Correlation analysis of unilateral index and muscular strength of affected hand performed through fMRI can be used as an effective means to investigate the relationship between motion rehabilitation and brain functional recombination after stroke. 展开更多

Developing method for strong Si–F σ bond activation is a very important tool in organosilicon transformation chemistry, only few examples of Si–F bond activation are precedent in the literature. Herein, we developed a new and efficient method to activate strong Si–F bond by transition-metal-free Si–F/Si–H cross coupling reaction catalyzed with 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) catalytic system under mild conditions. Various disiloxanes bearing tolerated functional groups were successfully synthesized in moderate to excellent yields from fluorosilanes and hydrosilanes. Moreover, H_(2)O was found to be the oxygen donor in this catalytic system. Background:Previous studies have demonstrated the underlying neurophysiologic mechanism during general anesthesia in adults. However, the mechanism of propofol-induced moderate-deep sedation(PMDS)in modulating pediatric neural activity remains unknown, which therefore was investigated in the present study based on functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI).Methods:A total of 41 children(5.101.14 years,male/female 21/20)with fMRI were employed to construct the functional connectivity network(FCN).The network communication,graph-theoretic properties, and network hub identification were statistically analyzed(t test and Bonferroni correction)between sedation(21 children)and awake(20 children)groups. All involved analyses were established on the whole-brain FCN and seven sub-networks,which included the default mode network(DMN),dorsal attentional network(DAN),salience network(SAN),auditory network(AUD),visual network(VIS),subcortical network(SUB),and other networks(Other). Results:Under PMDS,significant decreases in network communication were observed between SUB-VIS,SUB-DAN,and VIS-DAN,and between brain regions from the temporal lobe, limbic system, and subcortical tissues. However,no significant decrease in thalamus-related communication was observed. Most graph-theoretic properties were significantly decreased in the sedation group, and all graphical features of the DMN showed significant group differences. The superior parietal cortex with different neurological functions was identified as a network hub that was not greatly affected. Conclusions:Although the children had a depressed level of neural activity under PMDS,the crucial thalamus-related communication was maintained, and the network hub superior parietal cortex stayed active, which highlighted clinical prac-tices that the human body under PMDS is still perceptible to external stimuli and can be awakened by sound or touch. 展开更多

The objective of this paper is to present a robust safety-critical control system based on the active disturbance rejection control approach, designed to guarantee safety even in the presence of model inaccuracies, unknown dynamics, and external disturbances. The proposed method combines control barrier functions and control Lyapunov functions with a nonlinear extended state observer to produce a robust and safe control strategy for dynamic systems subject to uncertainties and disturbances. This control strategy employs an optimization-based control, supported by the disturbance estimation from a nonlinear extended state observer. Using a quadratic programming algorithm, the controller computes an optimal, stable, and safe control action at each sampling instant. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through numerical simulations of a safety-critical interconnected adaptive cruise control system. 展开更多

In this paper, coexistence and local Mittag–Leffler stability of fractional-order recurrent neural networks with discontinuous activation functions are addressed. Because of the discontinuity of the activation function, Filippov solution of the neural network is defined. Based on Brouwer's fixed point theorem and definition of Mittag–Leffler stability, sufficient criteria are established to ensure the existence of (2k + 3)~n (k ≥ 1) equilibrium points, among which (k + 2)~n equilibrium points are locally Mittag–Leffler stable. Compared with the existing results, the derived results cover local Mittag–Leffler stability of both fractional-order and integral-order recurrent neural networks. Meanwhile discontinuous networks might have higher storage capacity than the continuous ones. Two numerical examples are elaborated to substantiate the effective of the theoretical results. 展开更多
