Lagged effects of risk factors on the disability of older adults:A distributed lag non-linear model approach

Objectives This study aimed to explore the lagged and cumulative effects of risk factors on disability in older adults using distributed lag non-linear models(DLNMs).Methods We utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS).After feature selection via Elastic Net Regularization,we applied DLNMs to evaluate the lagged effects of risk factors.Disability was defined as the presence of any difficulties in basic activities of daily living(BADL).The cumulative relative risk(CRR)was calculated by summing the lag-specific risk estimates,representing the cumulative disability risk over the specified lag period.Effect modifications and sensitivity analyses were also performed.Results This study included a total of 2,318 participants.Early-phase lag factors,such as the difficulty in stooping(CRR=3.58;95%CI:2.31-5.55;P<0.001)and walking(CRR=2.77;95%CI:1.39-5.55;P<0.001),exerted the strongest effects immediately upon occurrence.Mid-phase lag factors,such as arthritis(CRR=1.51;95%CI:1.10-2.06;P=0.001),showed a resurgence in disability risk within 2-3 years.Late-phase lag factors,including depressive symptoms(CRR=2.38;95%CI:1.30-4.35;P<0.001)and elevated systolic blood pressure(CRR=1.64;95%CI:1.06-2.79;P=0.02),exhibited significant long-term cumulative risks.Conversely,grip strength(CRR=0.80;95%CI:0.54-0.95;P=0.02)and social participation(CRR=0.89;95%CI:0.73-0.99;P=0.04)were significant protective factors.Conclusions The findings underscore the importance of tailored interventions that account for various lag characteristics of different factors to effectively mitigate disability risk.Future studies should explore the underlying biological and sociological mechanisms of these lagged effects,identify intervention strategies that target risk factors with different lagged patterns,and evaluate their effectiveness. 展开更多

Fractography relies on topographic features on the fracture surfaces to deduce the stress state of the failed component. Traditionally, fractographers assumed that the fracture strength of brittle materials was related to the reciprocal of the square root of the mirror radius linearly, in accordance with the empirical equation formally postulated by Orr in 1972. In this manuscript a novel analytical model to describe the dynamic behavior of elliptical cracks was derived on the basis of thermodynamic principles. Unlike Orr's equation, the proposed model considered the effects of the plate thickness and it could be used to improve the strength prediction based on the plate's geometry and material properties. To verify the validity of the model, 39 annealed, 2 mm thick,soda-lime silicate glass plates were fractured by four-points bending test and the fracture surfaces were imaged by confocal laser microscope and carefully studied. Excellent agreement was observed between the experimental data and the proposed theoretical framework. 展开更多

A conceptual model of intermittent joints is introduced to the cyclic shear test in the laboratory to explore the effects of loading parameters on its shear behavior under cyclic shear loading.The results show that the loading parameters(initial normal stress,normal stiffness,and shear velocity)determine propagation paths of the wing and secondary cracks in rock bridges during the initial shear cycle,creating different morphologies of macroscopic step-path rupture surfaces and asperities on them.The differences in stress state and rupture surface induce different cyclic shear responses.It shows that high initial normal stress accelerates asperity degradation,raises shear resistance,and promotes compression of intermittent joints.In addition,high normal stiffness provides higher normal stress and shear resistance during the initial cycles and inhibits the dilation and compression of intermittent joints.High shear velocity results in a higher shear resistance,greater dilation,and greater compression.Finally,shear strength is most sensitive to initial normal stress,followed by shear velocity and normal stiffness.Moreover,average dilation angle is most sensitive to initial normal stress,followed by normal stiffness and shear velocity.During the shear cycles,frictional coefficient is affected by asperity degradation,backfilling of rock debris,and frictional area,exhibiting a non-monotonic behavior. 展开更多

The Gravitational Constant G May Decrease between Millimetre-Sized Masses

The Newtonian gravitational constant G is one of the most important fundamental constants of nature, but still remains resistant to the standard model of physics and disconnected from quantum theory. During the past >100 years, hundreds of G values have been measured to be ranging around 6.66 to 6.7559 × 10−11 m3·kg−1·s−2 using macroscopic masses. More recently, however, a G value ((6.04 ± 0.06) × 10−11 m3·kg−1·s−2) measured using millimetre-sized masses shows significant deviation (by ~9%) from the reference G value, which the authors explained is resulted from “the known systematic uncertainties”. However, based on the observation of historical G values and the protocol of the millimetre-sized masses based experiment, here we proposed a theory that this deviation is not from “systematic uncertainties” but actually G will rapidly decrease when masses sphere diameter is less than 0.02 metres. Moreover, this theory predicted the G value will be 5.96 × 10−11 m3·kg−1·s−2 between masses whose diameter are 2 millimetres (0.002 metres), which matches the measured G value very well. 展开更多

This opinion article discusses the original research work of Yünkül et al.(the Authors)published in the Journal of Mountain Science 21(9):3108–3122.Employing non-linear regression,fuzzy logic and artificial neural network modeling techniques,the Authors interrogated a large database assembled from the existing research literature to assess the performance of twelve equation rules in predicting the undrained shear strength(s_(u))mobilized for remolded fine-grained soils at different values of liquidity index(I_(L))and water content ratio.Based on their analyses,the Authors proposed a simple and reportedly reliable correlation(i.e.,Eq.9 in their paper)for predicting s_(u) over the I_(L) range of 0.15 to 3.00.This article describes various shortcomings in the Authors’assembled database(including potentially anomalous data and covering an excessively wide I_(L) range in relation to routine geotechnical and transportation engineering applications)and their proposed s_(u)=f(I_(L))correlation.Contrary to the Authors’assertions,their proposed correlation is not reliable for fine-grained soils with consistencies in the general firm to stiff range(i.e.,for 0.15<I_(L)<0.40),increasingly overestimating s_(u) for reducing I_(L),and eventually predicting s_(u)→+∞for I_(L)→0.15+(while producing mathematically undefined s_(u) for I_(L)<0.15),thus rendering their correlation unconservative and potentially leading to unsafe geotechnical designs.Exponential or regular-power type s_(u)=f(I_(L))models are more s_(u)itable when developing correlations that are applicable over the full plastic range(of 0<I_(L)<1),thereby providing reasonably conservative s_(u) predictions for use in the preliminary design for routine geotechnical engineering applications. 展开更多

Non-Linear Increase of the Real Contact Area of PMMA Blocks and the Related Contact Model

Many experiments have supported the contact models,such as the GW and MB models,but the majority of previous validations have been performed under light loads,resulting in a linear relationship between normal force and contact area.However,the real contact area fraction should never equal one;there must be a limit smaller than the apparent area,implying that the real contact area cannot increase linearly indefinitely.In this paper,the real contact area between two polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA)blocks under heavy load is measured using the total reflection method,and the contact area is analyzed using the image processing method.The results show that the real contact area increases with normal load linearly in light loads but non-linearly in heavy loads;the number of contact spots increases with load linearly in light loads but also non-linearly in heavy loads,synchronous with the change in the real contact area.The GW,MB,and Zhao,Maietta,and Chang(ZMC)models were used to predict the experiment results,but none of them predicted the non-linear stage.A revised GW model based on the bulk deformation hypothesis performs better in predicting the non-linear stage.The study’s findings can be applied to PMMA or other similar materials,and they can serve as a useful reference for future research on the contact mechanisms of other materials. 展开更多

Machine learning methodologies have been extensively leveraged across diverse domains of chemical research,yielding remarkable outcomes,and exhibit substantial potential for impactful future applications within the field of supramolecular chemistry.The recognition of alkali metal ions by crown ethers is one of the most classic and widely applied host-vip interactions in supramolecular chemistry.Due to the numerous factors affecting the host-vip interaction,it remains a great challenge to achieve fast and accurate prediction of the binding constants between crown ethers and alkali metal ions.Herein,we report a highly accurate machine learning model that can effectively predict the binding constants between crown ethers and alkali metal ions,i.e.,CrownBind-IA,with a low RMSE of 0.68 logK units.Moreover,this model proves robust extrapolative capabilities by accurately predicting out-of-sample data.The establishment of CrownBind-IA demonstrates the promising application potentials of data-driven machine learning methods in supramolecular chemistry,and it will substantially reduce the time and expense of experimental trials and characterizations,promote the exploration of the mechanism of host-vip interactions,as well as the rational design of novel functional supramolecular host molecules. 展开更多

Organisms have evolved a strain limiting mechanism,reflected as a non-linear elastic constitutive,to prevent large deformations from threatening soft tissue integrity.Compared with linear elastic substrates,the wrinkle of films on non-linear elastic substrates has received less attention.In this article,a unique wrinkle evolution of the film-substrate system with a J-shaped non-linear stress-strain relation is reported.The result shows that a concave hexagonal array pattern is formed with the shrinkage strain of the film-substrate systems developing.As the interconnection of hexagonal arrays,a unit cell ridge network appears with properties such as chirality and helix.The subparagraph maze pattern formed with high compression is mainly composed of special single-cell ridge networks such as spiral single cores,chiral double cores,and combined multi-cores.This evolutionary model is highly consistent with the results of experiments,and it also predicts wrinkle morphology that has not yet been reported.These findings can serve as a novel explanation for the surface wrinkle of biological soft tissue,as well as provide references for the preparation of artificial biomaterials and programmable soft matter. 展开更多

Efficient battery charging requires a power conversion system capable of providing precise voltage regulation tailored to the battery’s needs.This study develops a buck converter with a 36 V input for charging a 14 V battery using the Constant Voltage(CV)method.The system is designed to ensure safe and efficient charging while protecting the battery from overcharging and extending its lifespan.In the proposed design,the converter maintains a constant output voltage while the charging current decreases as the battery approaches full capacity.Pulse Width Modulation(PWM)is used as a control strategy to modify the duty cycle of the converter.This keeps the voltage output stable whenever the load changes.The design process involves simulation and experimental validation to evaluate the system’s performance and efficiency.The test results show the significant impact of Proportional-Integral-Derivative(PID)control on the stability of the output voltage to meet the requirements for 14 V battery charging and the efficiency of the battery charging process.The output voltage becomes more stable,with reduced oscillation and minimal steadystate error.The State of Charge(SOC)increases more stably,controllably,and efficiently thanks to the PID controller’s ability to adjust the duty cycle in real time based on system feedback.This dynamic adjustment ensures that the output current and voltage remain within the optimal range,which directly improves the battery charging process.In addition,PID control significantly improves the dynamic response of the system,reducing overshoot and settling time while maintaining precise voltage regulation.This speeds up the battery charging process and contributes to better energy efficiency,reduced power loss,and extended battery life.This research provides a reliable and cost-effective solution for applications in electric vehicles,renewable energy systems,and other battery-powered devices. 展开更多

Traceability is the fundamental premise of all metrological activities. The establishment of a traceability chain characterized by a shortened structure, while simultaneously enabling on-site traceability, represents a key trend in the advancement of metrology. This study explores the periodic accuracy and overall uniformity of self-traceable gratings, employing multilayer film gratings with a nominal period of 25.00 nm as the medium. We present a comparative analysis of measurement capabilities in a self-traceable grating calibration system characterized by a ‘top-down’ calibration approach and a Si lattice constant calibration system characterized by a ‘bottom-up’ calibration approach. The results indicate that the values obtained for the multilayer film grating periods, calibrated using the self-traceable grating system, are 24.40 nm with a standard deviation of 0.11 nm. By comparing with the values derived from the Si lattice constant, which yield 24.34 nm with a standard deviation of 0.14 nm, the validity and feasibility of the self-traceable calibration system are confirmed. This system extends and complements existing metrological frameworks, offering a precise pathway for traceability in precision engineering and nanotechnology research. 展开更多

The interstellar medium molecule thiocarbonyl thioketen,H_(2)CCS,has several stable isomers and has received considerable attention of as-tronomical observation in recent years.The positions of H,C,and S atoms of three isomers lead to di-verse dipole moments and spectro-scopic constants.The anharmonic force field and spectroscopic con-stants of thiocarbonyl thioketen and its isomers are calculated using MP2,B3LYP,and CCSD(T)methods employing correlation consistent basis sets.Molecule structures,rotational spectroscopic constants,and fundamental frequencies are compared with the available experimental data for thiocarbonyl thioketen.Ro-vibrational interaction constants,anharmonic constants,cubic and quartic force constants are predicted for thiocarbonyl thioketen.In addition,some rotational and vibrational spectroscopic parameters are predict-ed with the same level of theory for thioacetylene,HCCSH,and thiirene,(CH)_(2)S.The predic-tions of these spectroscopic constants are expected to guide the future astronomical observa-tion and high resolution experimental work for C_(2)H_(2)S isomers. 展开更多

High-Performance Constant Current Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Wind Energy Harvesting and Air Purification

Effective wind energy harvesting represents a viable solution to the global energy shortage and environmental pollution.Triboelectric nanogenerators(TENGs)hold great potential in wind energy harvesting;yet,there is little research on constant current TENGs for this purpose.Herein,a novel rotary bicharacteristic current TENG(R-BC-TENG)with constant current output for ambient wind energy harvesting is proposed,which delivers a low crest factor of 1.0187.Through the synergistic integration of triboelectrification,electrostatic discharge,and electrostatic induction,an average power density of 2.4 W m−2 Hz−1 and a charge density of 1.86 mC m−2 for the R-BC-TENG are achieved,with the charge density surpassing that reported in most previous studies.The minimum starting wind speed of R-BC-TENG is as low as 2.8 m s−1 while maintaining 100%performance after 12,700 cycles.Moreover,a self-powered air purification system,based on the R-BC-TENG,is developed,with the ability to generate 1,400,000 ions cm−3 and settle dust within 50 s.This work provides a paradigm for harvesting wind energy to achieve constant current output as well as safe and efficient air purification. 展开更多

This work aims to reveal the mechanical responses and energy evolution characteristics of skarn rock under constant amplitude-varied frequency loading paths.Testing results show that the fatigue lifetime,stress−strain responses,deformation,energy dissipation and fracture morphology are all impacted by the loading rate.A pronounced influence of the loading rate on rock deformation is found,with slower loading rate eliciting enhanced strain development,alongside augmented energy absorption and dissipation.In addition,it is revealed that the loading rate and cyclic loading amplitude jointly influence the phase shift distribution,with accelerated rates leading to a narrower phase shift duration.It is suggested that lower loading rate leads to more significant energy dissipation.Finally,the tensile or shear failure modes were intrinsically linked to loading strategy,with cyclic loading predominantly instigating shear damage,as manifest in the increased presence of pulverized grain particles.This work would give new insights into the fortification of mining structures and the optimization of mining methodologies. 展开更多

Aimed at the doubly near-far problems in a large range suffered by the remote user group and in a small range existing in both nearby and remote user groups during energy harvesting and computation offloading,a resource allocation method for unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)-assisted and user cooperation non-linear energy harvesting mobile edge computing(MEC)system is proposed.The UAV equipped with an MEC server is introduced to provide energy and computing services for the remote user group to alleviate the doubly near-far problem in a large range suffered by the remote user group.The doubly near-far problem in a small range existing in both nearby and remote user groups is mitigated by user cooperation.The specific user cooperation strategy is that the user near the base station or the UAV is used as a relay to transfer the computing task of the user far from the base station or the UAV to the MEC server for computing.By jointly optimizing users’offloading time,users’transmitting power,and the hovering position of the UAV,the resource allocation problem is modeled as a nonlinear programming problem with the objective of maximizing computation efficiency.The suboptimal solution is obtained by adopting the differential evolution algorithm.Simulation results show that,compared with the resource allocation method based on genetic algorithm and the without user cooperation method,the proposed method has higher computation efficiency. 展开更多

Constant-potential simulation of electrocatalytic N_(2) reduction over atomic metal-N-graphene catalysts

Charge-neutral method(CNM)is extensively used in investigating the performance of catalysts and the mechanism of N_(2)electrochemical reduction(NRR).However,disparities remain between the predicted potentials required for NRR by the CNM methods and those observed experimentally,as the CNM method neglects the charge effect from the electrode potential.To address this issue,we employed the constant electrode potential(CEP)method to screen atomic transition metal-N-graphene(M_(1)/N-graphene)as NRR electrocatalysts and systematically investigated the underlying catalytic mechanism.Among eight types of M_(1)/N-graphene(M_(1)=Mo,W,Fe,Re,Ni,Co,V,Cr),W_(1)/N-graphene emerges as the most promising NRR electrocatalyst with a limiting potential as low as−0.13 V.Additionally,the W_(1)/N-graphene system consistently maintains a positive charge during the reaction due to its Fermi level being higher than that of the electrode.These results better match with the actual circumstances compared to those calculated by conventional CNM method.Thus,our work not only develops a promising electrocatalyst for NRR but also deepens the understanding of the intrinsic electrocatalytic mechanism. 展开更多

Hydraulic sandblasting perforation plays a crucial role in the fracturing and reconstruction of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs.The jet nozzle is an essential part of the hydraulic perforation tool.Insufficient penetration depth,caused by excessive jet distances,presents challenges during the perforation process.To overcome this,an optimization design of the nozzle structure is required to enhance the perforation efficiency.In this paper,a computational fluid-dynamic model for conical-cylindrical nozzles has been elaborated.To further improve the rock-breaking efficiency of the jet nozzle,a fillet design is introduced at the nozzle inlet section.The SST k-ωmodel is employed to account for turbulent flow effects in submerged conditions.The results indicate that the nozzle’s geometric parameters greatly influence the flow characteristics.The orthogonal experimental method is employed to optimize the flow channel structure of the nozzle,taking the length of constant velocity core as the evaluation index.The following optimized geometric parameters for the conical-cylindrical nozzle have been determined accordingly:a cylindrical segment diameter of 3.2 mm,a contraction angle of 12°,a contraction segment length of 8 mm,a cylindrical segment length of 6.4 mm,and a fillet radius of 2 mm. 展开更多
