Coral reef limestone(CRL)constitutes a distinctive marine carbonate formation with complex mechanical properties. This study investigates the multiscale damage and fracture mechanisms of CRL through integrated experimental testing, digital core technology, and theoretical modelling. Two CRL types with contrasting mesostructures were characterized across three scales.Macroscopically,CRL-I and CRL-II exhibited mean compressive strengths of 8.46 and 5.17 MPa,respectively.Mesoscopically,CRL-I featured small-scale highly interconnected pores, whilst CRL-II developed larger stratified pores with diminished connectivity.Microscopically, both CRL matrices demonstrated remarkable similarity in mineral composition and mechanical properties.A novel voxel average-based digital core scaling methodology was developed to facilitate numerical simulation of cross-scale damage processes, revealing network-progressive failure in CRL-I versus directional-brittle failure in CRL-II.Furthermore,a damage statistical constitutive model based on digital core technology and mesoscopic homogenisation theory established quantitative relationships between microelement strength distribution and macroscopic mechanical behavior. These findings illuminate the fundamental mechanisms through which mesoscopic structure governs the macroscopic mechanical properties of CRL. 展开更多

Reservoir-induced landslides in China's Three Gorges Reservoir area are prone to tensile cracks due to the influenceof their own weight and fluctuationsin water levels. The presence of cracks indicates that the tensile stress in the area has exceeded the tensile strength of the soil, leading to local instability. To explore the impact of tensile failure behavior on the stability and failure modes of reservoir landslides, the Huangtupo Riverside Slump#1 is taken as a case study.By considering local tensile failure, potential tensile cracks are incorporated into the analysis via the limit equilibrium method and reliability theory. The reliability of landslides under different tensile failure scenarios is quantified.Strain-softening characteristics of the soil are combined to further analyze the failure transmission path of the landslide. Finally, these potential failure modes were validated through physical model tests. The results show that cracks developing at rear positions reduce the stability of the slope and increase the probability of instability.During the destruction process, retrogressive failures with multiple sliding surfaces are likely to occur. However, tensile failure at the forefront reduces the likelihood of an individual slide mass descending.Progressive failure results in both regular and skip transmission patterns.Additionally, cracks and water level changes can also lead to shifts in the positions of the most dangerous blocks. Therefore,in practical landslide analysis and prevention,it is necessary to consider local tensile damage and identify potential tensile crack locations in advance to optimize prevention measures and accurately evaluate landslide risk. 展开更多

We present an in-depth study of the failure phenomenon of solid expandable tubular (SET) due to large expansion ratio in open holes of deep and ultra-deep wells. By examining the post-expansion SET, lots of microcracks are found on the inner surface of SET. Their morphology and parameters such as length and depth are investigated by use of metallographic microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). In addition, the Voronoi cell technique is adopted to characterize the multi-phase material microstructure of the SET. By using the anisotropic elastoplastic material constitutive model and macro/microscopic multi-dimensional cross-scale coupled boundary conditions, a sophisticated and multi-scale finite element model (FEM) of the SET is built successfully to simulate the material microstructure damage for different expansion ratios. The microcrack initiation and growth is simulated, and the structural integrity of the SET is discussed. It is concluded that this multi-scale finite element modeling method could effectively predict the elastoplastic deformation and the microscopic damage initiation and evolution of the SET. It is of great significance as a theoretical analysis tool to optimize the selection of appropriate tubular materials and it could be also used to substantially reduce costly failures of expandable tubulars in the field. This numerical analysis is not only beneficial for understanding the damage process of tubular materials but also effectively guides the engineering application of the SET technology. 展开更多

Because of the challenge of compounding lightweight,high-strength Ti/Al alloys due to their considerable disparity in properties,Al 6063 as intermediate layer was proposed to fabricate TC4/Al 6063/Al 7075 three-layer composite plate by explosive welding. The microscopic properties of each bonding interface were elucidated through field emission scanning electron microscope and electron backscattered diffraction(EBSD).A methodology combining finite element method-smoothed particle hydrodynamics(FEM-SPH)and molecular dynamics(MD)was proposed for the analysis of the forming and evolution characteristics of explosive welding interfaces at multi-scale.The results demonstrate that the bonding interface morphologies of TC4/Al 6063 and Al 6063/Al 7075 exhibit a flat and wavy configuration, without discernible defects or cracks. The phenomenon of grain refinement is observed in the vicinity of the two bonding interfaces.Furthermore, the degree of plastic deformation of TC4 and Al 7075 is more pronounced than that of Al 6063 in the intermediate layer. The interface morphology characteristics obtained by FEM-SPH simulation exhibit a high degree of similarity to the experimental results.MD simulations reveal that the diffusion of interfacial elements predominantly occurs during the unloading phase, and the simulated thickness of interfacial diffusion aligns well with experimental outcomes. The introduction of intermediate layer in the explosive welding process can effectively produce high-quality titanium/aluminum alloy composite plates.Furthermore, this approach offers a multi-scale simulation strategy for the study of explosive welding bonding interfaces. 展开更多

Three-dimensional printing(3DP)offers valuable insight into the characterization of natural rocks and the verification of theoretical models due to its high reproducibility and accurate replication of complex defects such as cracks and pores. In this study,3DP gypsum samples with different printing directions were subjected to a series of uniaxial compression tests with in situ micro-computed tomography(micro-CT)scanning to quantitatively investigate their mechanical anisotropic properties and damage evolution characteristics.Based on the two-dimensional(2D)CT images obtained at different scanning steps,a novel void ratio variable was derived using the mean value and variance of CT intensity.Additionally,a constitutive model was formulated incorporating the proposed damage variable, utilizing the void ratio variable. The crack evolution and crack morphology of 3DP gypsum samples were obtained and analyzed using the 3D models reconstructed from the CT images. The results indicate that 3DP gypsum samples exhibit mechanical anisotropic characteristics similar to those found in naturally sedimentary rocks. The mechanical anisotropy is attributed to the bedding planes formed between adjacent layers and pillar-like structures along the printing direction formed by CaSO_(4)·2H_(2)O crystals of needle-like morphology. The mean gray intensity of the voids has a positive linear relationship with the threshold value, while the CT variance and void ratio have concave and convex relationships, respectively. The constitutive model can effectively match the stress–strain curves obtained from uniaxial compression experiments. This study provides comprehensive explanations of the failure modes and anisotropic mechanisms of 3DP gypsum samples, which is important for characterizing and understanding the failure mechanism and microstructural evolution of 3DP rocks when modeling natural rock behavior. 展开更多

Seismic fragility analysis(SFA)is known as an effective probabilistic-based approach used to evaluate seismic fragility. There are various sources of uncertainties associated with this approach.A nuclear power plant(NPP)system is an extremely important infrastructure and contains many structural uncertainties due to construction issues or structural deterioration during service.Simulation of structural uncertainties effects is a costly and time-consuming endeavor.A novel approach to SFA for the NPP considering structural uncertainties based on the damage state is proposed and examined. The results suggest that considering the structural uncertainties is essential in assessing the fragility of the NPP structure, and the impact of structural uncertainties tends to increase with the state of damage.Subsequently, machine learning(ML)is found to be superior in high-precision damage state identification of the NPP for reducing the time of nonlinear time-history analysis(NLTHA)and could be applied in the damage state-based SFA.Also, the impact of various sources of uncertainties is investigated through sensitivity analysis. The Sobol and Shapley additive explanations(SHAP)method can be complementary to each other and able to solve the problem of quantifying seismic and structural uncertainties simultaneously and the interaction effect of each parameter. 展开更多

Shale gas, as a clean, low-carbon, and abundant unconventional natural gas resource, plays a crucial role in achieving clean energy transformation and carbon neutrality. The Fuling shale gas reservoir in Sichuan Basin stands out as China's most promising area for shale gas exploration and recovery. However, the continuous recovery of shale gas in the southern Sichuan Basin has led to well interference events in hundreds of wells, with the furthest well distance reaching over 2000 m. This study introduces a multi-scale approach for transient analysis of a multi-well horizontal pad with well interference in shale gas reservoirs. The approach utilizes Laplace transform technology, boundary element theory, and the finite difference method to address the complexities of the system. Well interference is managed using the pressure superposition principle. To validate the proposed multi-scale method, a commercial numerical simulator is employed. The comprehensive pressure behavior of a multi-well horizontal pad in a shale gas reservoir is analyzed, encompassing wellbore storage effect, skin effect, bilinear flow, linear flow, pseudo-radial flow of primary fractures, well interference period, dual-porosity flow, pseudo-radial flow of the total system, and boundary-dominated flow. A case study is conducted on the typical well, the well with the longest production history in the Fuling shale gas reservoir. The rate transient analysis is conducted to integrate up to 229 days of shale gas production daily data and wellhead pressure data, enabling the generation of pressure behavior under unit flow rate. The results indicate that the linear flow, transitional flow, and boundary-dominated flow are more likely to be observed in the actual data. Secondary fractures are considered to be the primary pathways for fluid migration during well interference events. The evaluated formation permeability is 2.58 × 10^(-2) mD, the well spacing is 227.8 m, the diffusion coefficient is 1.49 × 10^(-4), and the skin factor is 0.09. 展开更多

Identifying the damage and fracture properties of nuclear graphite materials and accurately simulating them are crucial when designing graphite core structures. To simulate the damage evolution and crack propagation of graphite under stress in a finite element model, compression tests on disks and three-point bending tests on center-notched beams for fine-grained graphite(CDI-1D and IG11 graphite)were conducted.During these tests, digital image correlation and electronic speckle pattern interferometry techniques were utilized to observe the surface full-field displacements of the specimens.A segmented finite element inverse analysis method was developed to characterize the graphite’s damage evolution by quantifying the reduction in Young’s modulus with tensile and compressive strains in disk specimens. The fracture energy and bilinear tensile softening curve of the graphite were determined by comparing the load–displacement responses of the three-point bending tests and the finite element simulation. Finally,by combining the identified damage laws with a fracture criterion based on fracture energy,a damage–fracture model was established and used to simulate tensile tests on L-shaped specimens with different fillet radii.Simulations indicate that the damage area at the fillet expands with increasing radius, creating a blunting effect that enhances the load-bearing capacity of the specimens. This damage–fracture model can be applied to simulate graphite components in core structures. 展开更多

As a critical mechanical characteristic of rock, brittleness significantly influences fracture modes and damage evolution processes.Accurate quantitative evaluation of brittleness is essential for ensuring the stability of various engineering applications.Based on the pre-peak and post-peak stages of the rock stress-strain curve, this study constructed a brittleness index BI^(*).The index quantifies the ability of rock to resist plastic deformation during the pre-peak crack growth stage and evaluates the intensity of strength drop during the post-peak softening stage.Another index,BII,was established based on the degree of pre-peak elastic energy accumulation and the instability characteristics of post-peak dissipated energy. This index reflects the essential properties of rock failure by revealing the energy evolution mechanism.Furthermore,by defining a damage variable from the energy dissipation over the entire deformation process,an index B_(D)was introduced to evaluate brittleness from the perspective of internal damage development.Triaxial compression and cyclic loading tests were conducted on rocks of different lithologies to evaluate the new index. The influences of confining pressure and lithology on rock brittleness were analyzed, along with the sensitivity analysis of various brittleness index parameters. The results indicated that the proposed brittleness indices accurately distinguish the brittleness differences among various lithologies and show effective consistency with the failure modes of specimens under different confining pressures.Meanwhile, different brittleness indices were affected by confining pressure and lithology to different degrees. The post-peak softening stage of rock played a particularly significant role in brittleness analysis.A brittleness classification system under different confining pressures and lithologies was established. The research results contribute to the enhancement and refinement of the rock brittleness evaluation system. 展开更多

A cuneal sheet was also adopted to study the influence of reduction on temperature, damage and rolling force. The results show that with increasing the reduction, the rolling force increases, and the temperature of the Mg sheet decreases. Edge cracks occur when the reduction is above 51.6%, with the damage value of above 0.49. Aiming at the problem of on-line damage diagnosis in structural health monitoring (SHM), an algorithm of feature extraction and damage alarming based on auto-regressive moving-average (ARMA) time series analysis is presented. The monitoring data were first modeled as ARMA models, while a principalcomponent matrix derived from the AR coefficients of these models was utilized to establish the Mahalanobisdistance criterion functions. Then, a new damage-sensitive feature index DDSF is proposed. A hypothesis test involving the t-test method is further applied to obtain a decision of damage alarming as the mean value of DDSF had significantly changed after damage. The numerical results of a three-span-girder model shows that the defined index is sensitive to subtle structural damage, and the proposed algorithm can be applied to the on-line damage alarming in SHM. 展开更多

The development of metallic mineral resources generates a significant amount of solid waste, such as tailings and waste rock.Cemented tailings and waste-rock backfill(CTWB)is an effective method for managing and disposing of this mining waste. This study employs a macro-meso-micro testing method to investigate the effects of the waste rock grading index(WGI)and loading rate(LR)on the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS),pore structure, and micromorphology of CTWB materials.Pore structures were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP).The particles(pores)and cracks analysis system(PCAS)software was used to quantitatively characterize the multi-scale micropores in the SEM images. The key findings indicate that the macroscopic results(UCS)of CTWB materials correspond to the microscopic results(pore structure and micromorphology).Changes in porosity largely depend on the conditions of waste rock grading index and loading rate. The inclusion of waste rock initially increases and then decreases the UCS,while porosity first decreases and then increases, with a critical waste rock grading index of 0.6.As the loading rate increases,UCS initially rises and then falls, while porosity gradually increases.Based on MIP and SEM results,at waste rock grading index 0.6,the most probable pore diameters, total pore area(TPA),pore number(PN),maximum pore area(MPA),and area probability distribution index(APDI)are minimized, while average pore form factor(APF)and fractal dimension of pore porosity distribution(FDPD)are maximized, indicating the most compact pore structure. At a loading rate of 12.0 mm/min,the most probable pore diameters,TPA,PN,MPA,APF,and APDI reach their maximum values, while FDPD reaches its minimum value. Finally, the mechanism of CTWB materials during compression is analyzed, based on the quantitative results of UCS and porosity. The research findings play a crucial role in ensuring the successful application of CTWB materials in deep metal mines. 展开更多

Mango(Mangifera indica L.)is one of the main economic crops in Hainan,China, prized for its distinctive flavor and high nutritional value. It is also rich in health-promoting antioxidants such as vitamin C and flavonoids.Enhanced ultraviolet-B(UV—B)radiation,a growing global environmental concern, alters plant antioxidant systems, with increased flavonoid accumulation as a common adaptive response. However, its effects on mango fruit remain largely unexplored. To investigate the antioxidant responses of mango to enhanced UV-B radiation and identify key responsive flavonoid compounds and regulatory genes,we exposed‘Tainong 1’mango fruits growing under natural light to 96 kJ·m^(-2)·d^(-1)of UV-B radiation to simulate high UV-B conditions.Treated fruits were smaller in size and had a pulp of a more intense yellow colour.Further, malondialdehyde content in treated fruits was higher during the phase of rapid fruit enlargement.Additionally, treated fruits showed increased sugar-acid ratios, total phenol, total flavonoid, carotenoid, and ascorbic acid contents.Furthermore, they showed significantly enhanced antioxidant activity,as measured by the FRAP,ABTS,and DPPH assays.Extensive targeted metabolomic-analysis identified flavonoids as the largest category of compounds differentially expressed in treated and control groups.Quantitative metabolomics of flavonoids identified hyperoside,quercimeritrin,and(-)-catechin gallate as the key flavonoid metabolites responsive to UV-B treatment.Transcriptome analysis revealed an enrichment of the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway, with most associated differentially expressed genes showing upregulation.Furthermore,qRT-PCR analysis confirmed that the expression of the genes MiCHS7,MiCHI1,MiCHI2,MiFLS,MiF3H2,and MiF3H3 correlated with changes in key flavonoid metabolites.Indeed, correlation analysis indicated that MiCHS7,MiCHI1,MiFLS,and MiF3H3 are potential key genes involved in flavonoid accumulation under UV-B treatment. Thus, our study provides a theoretical basis for breeding for new resilient varieties and developing UV-B-resistant mango cultivation techniques. 展开更多

Machining damage occurs on the surface of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites during processing. In the current simulation model of CFRP, the initial defects on the carbon fiber and the periodic random distribution of the reinforcement phase in the matrix are not considered in detail, which makes the characteristics of the cutting model significantly different from the actual processing conditions. In this paper, a novel three-phase model of carbon fiber/cyanate ester composites is proposed to simulate the machining damage of the composites. The periodic random distribution of the carbon fiber reinforced phase in the matrix was realized using a double perturbation algorithm. To achieve the stochastic distribution of the strength of a single carbon fiber, a novel method that combines the Weibull intensity distribution theory with the Monte Carlo method is presented. The mechanical properties of the cyanate matrix were characterized by fitting the stress-strain curves, and the cohesive zone model was employed to simulate the interface. Based on the model, the machining damage mechanism of the composites was revealed using finite element simulations and by conducting a theoretical analysis. Furthermore, the milling surfaces of the composites were observed using a scanning electron microscope, to verify the accuracy of the simulation results. In this study, the simulations and theoretical analysis of the carbon fiber/cyanate ester composite processing were carried out based on a novel three-phase model, which revealed the material failure and machining damage mechanism more accurately. 展开更多

The study concentrates mainly on the development of failure process incomposite rock mass. By use of acoustic emission (AE), convergence inspection, pressure monitoring, level measurement techniques and the modem signal analysis technology, as well as scan electronmicroscopy (SEM) experiment, various aspects of nonlinear dynamic damage of composite rock masssurrounding the transport roadway in Linglong gold mine are discussed. According to the monitoringresults, the stability of the rock mass can be synthetically evaluated, and the intrinsic relationbetween the damage and the characteristic parameters of acoustic emission can be determined. Thelocation of the damage of rock mass can also be detected based on the acoustic emission couplemonitoring signals. Finally, the key factors which influence the stability of the transport roadwaysupported by composite hard rock materials are found out. 展开更多
