Rotor blade is one of the most significant components of helicopters. But due to its highspeed rotation characteristics, it is difficult to collect the vibration signals during the flight stage. Moreover, sensors are highly susceptible to damage resulting in the failure of the measurement. In order to make signal predictions for the damaged sensors, an operational modal analysis(OMA) together with the virtual sensing(VS) technology is proposed in this paper. This paper discusses two situations, i.e., mode shapes measured by all sensors(both normal and damaged) can be obtained using OMA, and mode shapes measured by some sensors(only including normal) can be obtained using OMA. For the second situation, it is necessary to use finite element(FE) analysis to supplement the missing mode shapes of damaged sensor. In order to improve the correlation between the FE model and the real structure, the FE mode shapes are corrected using the local correspondence(LC) principle and mode shapes measured by some sensors(only including normal). Then, based on the VS technology, the vibration signals of the damaged sensors during the flight stage can be accurately predicted using the identified mode shapes(obtained based on OMA and FE analysis) and the normal sensors signals. Given the high degrees of freedom(DOFs) in the FE mode shapes, this approach can also be used to predict vibration data at locations without sensors. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method is verified through finite element simulation, experiment as well as the actual flight test. The present work can be further used in the fault diagnosis and damage identification for rotor blade of helicopters. 展开更多

The rocket sled system is not only a high-speed dynamic ground test system, but also one of the future aerospace horizontal launch schemes. The winged load,as a common type of payload, has greater vibration and noise intensity than the wingless load.Due to the severe aerodynamic instability prior to separation, the head-up or head-down phenomena are more evident and the test accuracy significantly decreases. The high-precision computer fluid dynamics and aeroacoustic analysis are employed to explore the multifield coupling mechanism of a rocket sled with the winged payload in the wide speed range(Ma=0.5–2).The results show that as the incoming velocity increases, the cone angle of the shock wave of the rocket sled decreases, the shock pressure increases quickly, and the vortex between the slippers splits and gradually shrinks in size. The velocity of the rocket sled exerts little influence on the modal resonance frequency. The wing has a significant impact on aerodynamic noise, and as the sound pressure level rises, the propagation direction gradually shifts towards the rear and upper regions of the wing. 展开更多

Double-shaft-driven needle punching machine is a specialized equipment designed for processing C/C crucible preforms. Its main needle punching module is operated by two sets of reciprocating crank-slider mechanisms. The intense vibration during needle punching not only generates huge noise, but also substantially reduces the quality of the preform. It is imperative to perform a dynamic analysis and optimization of the entire needle punching machine. In this paper, the three-dimensional(3D)model of the entire double-shaft-driven needle punching machine for C/C crucible preforms is established.Based on the modal analysis theory, the modal characteristics of the needle punching machine under various operating conditions are analyzed and its natural frequencies and vibration modes are determined. The harmonic response analysis is then employed to obtain the amplitude of the needle plate at different frequencies, and the structural weak points of the needle punching machine are identified and improved. The feasibility of the optimized scheme is subsequently reevaluated and verified. The results indicate that the first six natural frequencies of the machine increase, and the maximum amplitude of the needle plate decreases by 70.3%.The enhanced dynamic characteristics of the machine significantly improve its performance, enabling more efficient needle punching of C/C crucible preforms. 展开更多

Reinforced concrete buildings may experience partial damage after earthquakes or some human-induced actions.A decision about the future of those buildings requires detailed analyses, while determining the dynamic characteristics of a real building in its pre-and post-event situations can guide the analysis.Hence, this study was planned to monitor the dynamic response of an existing six-story,reinforced concrete building with regard to structural damage. The modal characteristics of the original building were initially determined by the use of operational modal analysis.Next, three steps of progressive structural damage were applied to the building. The first damage level peeled off the clear cover of a beam and three columns on a corner of the building’s ground floor.whereas the second and third levels completely razed the damaged columns.Operational modal analysis was repeated at each damage stage to extract the frequencies and detailed mode shapes. Moreover, numerical models based on the finite element method were constructed to confirm the obtained experimental findings. The well-agreed experimental and numerical findings revealed the damage sensitivity of the building’s dynamic response. The quantified amount of frequency change favored a retrofit of the partially damaged buildings rather than their replacement. 展开更多

This research focuses on the seismic responses of the historic masonry minarets, conducted through the creation of a digital twin model using finite element methods. The study initiated the development of a comprehensive model in the ANSYS Workbench, supplemented by operational modal analysis(OMA),to ascertain the dynamic characteristics of the minaret. The alignment of numerical and experimental frequency data was achieved using the response surface method(RSM)within ANSYS Workbench DesignXplorer. This process resulted in the establishment of a digital twin, accurately representing the physical minaret in a virtual environment.Blender^(■)software was then used to simulate the effects of two consecutive earthquakes in Türkiye that occurred on February 6,2023.The simulations highlighted the heightened susceptibility of the minaret, especially in its upper sections,to consecutive seismic activities, culminating in significant damage and collapse. This innovative approach, merging traditional engineering methods with a cutting-edge digital simulation, provides a profound insight into the seismic behavior of historical structures. The research underscores the importance of advanced seismic modeling for the effective preservation and resilience of architectural heritage sites against earthquake risks. 展开更多

The “Huang gua” melons were measured for their physical properties including firmness and static elastic modulus. The vibrational characteristics of fruits and vegetables are governed by their elastic modulus (firmness), mass, and geometry. Therefore, it is possible to evaluate firmness of fruits and vegetables based on their vibrational characteristics. Analysis of the vibration responses of a fruit is suggested for measuring elastic properties (Firmness) non-destructively. The impulse response method is often used to measure firmness of fruits. The fruit was excited using three types of balls (wooden, steel and rubber) and the vibration is detected by an accelerometer. The Instron device was used to measure the static elastic modulus of the inner, middle and outer portions of melon flesh. Finite element (FE) technique was used to determine the optimum excitation location of the chosen measurement sensor and to analyze the mode shape fruits. Four types of mode shapes (torsional or flexural mode shape, first-type, second-type spherical mode and breathing mode shape) were found. Finite element simulation results agreed well with experimental results. Correlation between the firmness and resonant frequency (r2=0.91) and between the resonant frequency and stiffness factor (r2=0.74) existed. The optimum location and suitable direction for excitation and response measurement on the fruit were suggested. 展开更多

Spot weld models are widely used in finite element analysis(FEA) of automotive body in white(BIW) to predict static, dynamic, durability and other characteristics of automotive BIW.However, few researches are done on evaluation of the validity of these spot weld models in structural dynamic analysis of BIW.To evaluate the validity and accuracy of spot weld models in structural dynamic analysis of BIW,two object functions, error function and deviation function, are introduced innovatively.Modal analysis of Two-panel and Double-hat structures, which are the dominated structures in BIW,is conducted, and the values of these two object functions are obtained.Based on the values of object functions, the validity of these spot weld models are evaluated. It is found that the area contact method(ACM2) and weld element connection(CWELD) can give more precise prediction in modal analysis of these two classical structures, thus are more applicable to structural dynamic analysis of automotive BIW.Modal analysis of a classical BIW is performed, which further confirms this evaluation. The error function and deviation function proposed in this research can give guidance on the adaptability of spot weld models in structural dynamic analysis of BIW.And this evaluation method can also be adopted in evaluation of other finite element models in static, dynamic and other kinds of analysis for automotive structures. 展开更多

Modal analysis is a fundamental and important task for modeling and control of the flexible manipulator. However, almost all of the traditional modal analysis methods view the flexible manipulator as a pure mechanical structure and neglect feedback action of joint controller. In order to study the effects of joint controller on the modal analysis of rotational flexible manipulator, a closed-loop analytical modal analysis method is proposed. Firstly, two exact boundary constraints, namely servo feedback constraint and bending moment constraint, are derived to solve the vibration partial differential equation. It is found that the stiffness and damping gains of joint controller are both included in the boundary conditions, which lead to an unconventional secular term. Secondly, analytical algorithm based on Ritz approach is developed by using Laplace transform and complex modal approach to obtain the natural frequencies and mode shapes. And then, the numerical simulations are performed and the computational results show that joint controller has pronounced influence on the modal parameters: joint controller stiffness reduces the natural frequency, while joint controller damping makes the shape phase non-zero. Furthermore, the validity of the presented conclusion is confirmed through experimental studies. These findings are expected to improve the performance of dynamics simulation systems and model-based controllers. 展开更多

Sea-crossing bridges have attracted considerable attention in recent years as an increasing number of projects have been constructed worldwide.Situated in the coastal area,sea-crossing bridges are subjected to a harsh environment(e.g.strong winds, possible ship collisions, and tidal waves)and their performance can deteriorate quickly and severely. To enhance safety and serviceability,it is a routine process to conduct vibration tests to identify modal properties(e.g.natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes)and to monitor their long-term variation for the purpose of early-damage alert.Operational modal analysis(OMA)provides a feasible way to investigate the modal properties even when the cross-sea bridges are in their operation condition. In this study,we focus on the OMA of cable-stayed bridges, because they are usually long-span and flexible to have extremely low natural frequencies. It challenges experimental capability(e.g.instrumentation and budgeting)and modal identification techniques(e.g.low frequency and closely spaced modes). This paper presents a modal survey of a cable-stayed sea-crossing bridge spanning 218 m+620 m+218 m.The bridge is located in the typhoon-prone area of the northwestern Pacific Ocean.Ambient vibration data was collected for 24 h.A Bayesian fast Fourier transform modal identification method incorporating an expectation-maximization algorithm is applied for modal analysis,in which the modal parameters and associated identification uncertainties are both addressed.Nineteen modes, including 15 translational modes and four torsional modes, are identified within the frequency range of[0,2.5 Hz]. 展开更多

A frequency and spatial domain decomposition method (FSDD) for operational modal analysis (OMA) is presented in this paper, which is an extension of the complex mode indicator function (CMIF) method for experimental modal analysis (EMA). The theoretical background of the FSDD method is clarified, Singular value decomposition is adopted to separate the signal space from the noise space. Finally, an enhanced power spectrum density (PSD) is proposed to obtain more accurate modal parameters by curve fitting in the frequency domain. Moreover, a simulation case and an application case are used to validate this method. 展开更多

Two special mechanical configurations make the cutting performance of the machine tool decline. One is the milling head spindle supported on two sets of complex bearings. The mechanical dynamic rigidity of milling head structure is researched on designed digital prototype with finite element analysis(FEA) and modal synthesis analysis ( MSA ) for identifying the weak structures. The other is the ram structure hanging on milling head. The structure is researched to get dynamic performance on cutting at different ram extending positions. The analysis results on spindle and ram are used to improve the mechanical configurations and structure in design. In this work, we further extended the face-based smoothed finite element method (FS-FEM) for modal analysis of three-dimensional solids using four-node tetrahedron elements. The FS-FEM is formulated based on the smoothed Calerkin weak form which employs smoothed strains obtained using the gradient smoothing operation on face-based smoothing domains. This strain smoothing operation can provide softening effect to the system stiffness and make the FSFEM provide more accurate eigenfrequency prediction than the FEM does. Numerical studies have verified this attractive property of FS-FEM as well as its ability and effectiveness on providing reliable eigenfrequency and eigenmode prediction in practical engineering application. 展开更多

The modal characteristics of the transverse vibration of an axially moving roller chain coupled with lumped mass were analyzed. The chain system was modeled by using the multi-body dynamics theory and the governing equations were derived by means of Lagrange's equations. The effects of the parameters, such as the axially moving velocity of the chain, the tension force, the weight of lumped mass and its time-variable assign position in chain span,on the modal characteristics of transverse vibration for roller chain were investigated. The numerical examples were given. It is found that the natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of the transverse vibration for roller chain coupled with lumped mass change significantly when the variations of above parameters are considered. With the movement of the chain strand, the natural frequencies present a fluctuating phenomenon, which is different from the uniform chain. The higher the order of mode is,the greater the fluctuating magnitude and frequency are. 展开更多

The pushover analysis (POA) procedure is difficult to apply to high-rise buildings, as it cannot account for the contributions of higher modes. To overcome this limitation, a modal pushover analysis (MPA) procedure was proposed by Chopra et al. (2001). However, invariable lateral force distributions are still adopted in the MPA. In this paper, an improved MPA procedure is presented to estimate the seismic demands of structures, considering the redistribution of inertia forces after the structure yields. This improved procedure is verified with numerical examples of 5-, 9- and 22-story buildings. It is concluded that the improved MPA procedure is more accurate than either the POA procedure or MPA procedure. In addition, the proposed procedure avoids a large computational effort by adopting a two-phase lateral force distribution.. 展开更多

To control the vibration level of ships under construction,MSC Software’s Patran&Nastran modeling solutions can be used to establish a detailed finite element model of a new manned submersible support mother ship based on a line drawing, including the deck layout, bulkhead section, and stiffener distribution. After a comprehensive analysis of the ship simulation conditions, boundaries, and excitation forces of the main operating equipment, modal analysis and calculation of the ship vibration can be conducted. In this study,we calculated and analyzed the vibration response of key points in the stern area of the ship’s main deck and the submersible warehouse area under design loading working conditions. We then analyzed the vibration response of typical decks(including the compass deck, steering deck, captain’s deck, forecastle deck, and main deck)under the main excitation forces and moments(such as the full swing pod and generator sets). The analysis results showed that under DESIDEP working conditions, the vibration of each deck and key areas of the support mother ship could meet the vibration code requirements of the ship’s preliminary design(using the pod excitation and generator sets).Similarly, the vibration response of a scientific research ship under other loading conditions also met the requirements of the code and provided data support for a comprehensive understanding of the ship’s vibration and noise levels.Using actual vibration measurements, the accuracy of the vibration level simulations using finite element modeling was verified, the vibration of each area of the ship comfortably meeting the requirements of the China Classification Society. 展开更多

A contact bolt model is proposed as a new modeling technique to investigate the complex structure with bolted joints for modal analysis and compared with the coupled bolt model, and the test results are given. Among these models, the coupled bolt model provides the best accurate responses compared with the experimental results. The contact bolt model shows the best effectiveness and usefulness in view of operational time. The bolt models proposed in this study are adopted for a dynamic characteristic analysis of a large diesel engine consisting of several parts which are connected by many bolts. The dynamic behavior of the entire engine structure was investigated by experiment. The coupled bolt model and the contact bolt model were applied to model the assembly of engine with high preload.
