AIM: To study the comparison in terms of root coverage the effect of gingival massaging using an ayurvedic product and semilunar coronally repositioned flap(SCRF) to assess the treatment outcomes in the management of Miller's class Ⅰ gingival recessions over a-6mo period. METHODS: The present study comprised of total of 90 sites of Miller's class-Ⅰ gingival recessions in the maxillary anteriors, the sites were divided into three groups each comprising 30 sites, Group Ⅰ-were treated by massaging using a Placebo(Ghee) Group Ⅱ-were treated by massaging using an ayurvedic product(irimedadi taila). Group Ⅲ-were treated by SCRF. Clinical parameters assessed included recession height, recession width, probing pocket depth, width of attached gingiva, clinical attachment level and thickness of keratinized tissue. Clinical recordings were performed at baseline and 6 mo later. The results were analyzed to determine improvements in the clinical parameters. The comparison was done using Wilcoxon signed rank test. The overall differences in the clinical improvements between the three groups was done using Kruskal-Wallis test. The probability value(P-value) of less than 0.01 was considered as statistically significant.RESULTS: Non-surgical periodontal therapy and gingival massaging improves facial gingival recessions and prevents further progression of mucogingival defects. Root coverage was achieved in both the experimental groups. The SCRF group proved to be superior in terms of all the clinical parameters.CONCLUSION: Root coverage is significantly better with semilunar coronally repositioned flap compared with the gingival massaging technique in the treatment of shallow maxillary Miller class Ⅰ gingival recession defects. 展开更多

As Thailand and China mark the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties this year, most headlines will naturally focus on trade deals, railways, and strategic partnerships. But tucked behind the golden spires of Bangkok’s Wat Po temple lies a quieter, gentler form of diplomacy—one that happens through kneading hands, respectful bows, and an ancient art passed down across generations. At the Wat Po Thai Traditional Medical School, headmaster Serat Tangtrongchitr sees Thai massage not only as a healing craft, but as a cultural bridge—one that connects people across borders, languages, and belief systems.“We don’t just teach massage,”Serat said, his voice calm but assured.“We teach a way of life. And when people from other cultures learn this with us—Chinese students included—they come to understand not just the techniques, but the heart of Thai culture.” 展开更多

Massage therapy is an alternative treatment for chronic pain that is potentially related to brain plasticity. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We established a peripheral nerve injury model in rats by unilateral sciatic nerve transection and direct anastomosis. The experimental rats were treated over the gastrocnemius muscle of the affected hindlimb with a customized massage instrument(0.45 N,120 times/min,10 minutes daily, for 4 successive weeks).Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed that compared with control rats, the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations in the sensorimotor cortex contralateral to the affected limb was significantly lower after sciatic nerve transection. However, amplitudes were significantly higher in the massage group than in a sham-massage group. These findings suggest that massage therapy facilitated adaptive change in the somatosensory cortex that led to the recovery of peripheral nerve injury and repair. This study was approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China(approval No.201701001)on January 12,2017. 展开更多

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the efficacy of meridian massage on motor function after a stroke.METHODS:This systematic review and Meta-analysis of randomised(RCTs)and quasi-randomised controlled trials(q RCTs)was performed to determine the effects of meridian massage on motor dysfunction following a stroke.Articles published until December 2020 related to stroke and meridian massage from National Library of Medicine,Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials,Embase,Korea Med,Japan science and Technology Agency,China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database,Wanfang Database,Chinese Biomedical Literature Database and China Science and Technology Journal Database were searched. The primary outcomes included Fugl-Mayer Assessment(FMA),modified Barthel Index(m BI)and clinical efficiency, while the secondary outcomes included modified Ashworth(m AS)and Berg Balance Scale(BBS).Two authors independently selected the literature, extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias, after which Meta-analysis with subgroups and sensitivity analysis was conducted.RESULTS:A total of 16 RCTs and 3 q-RCTs involved 1556 patients satisfied the inclusion.Meta-analysis showed that compared to conventional rehabilitation, meridian massage had significantly better FMA[mean difference(MD)=1.16,95%confidence interval(CI):0.43,1.89,P=0.002],FMA-L(MD=3.21,95%CI:1.97,4.45,P=0.00001),m BI(MD=8.87,95%CI:4.24,13.49,P=0.00002),clinical efficiency[relative risk(RR)=1.37,95%CI:1.24,1.51,P<0.00001],m AS(MD=-0.69,95%CI:-1.26,-0.11,P=0.02)and BBS(MD=5.07,95%CI:2.22,7.93,P=0.0005).Subgroup analysis indicated no significant difference between meridian massage and control group when the intervention duration was>8 weeks(MD=0.89,95%CI:-0.64,2.42,P=0.25)but improving motor function in the meridian massage when the intervention duration was≤8 weeks(<4 weeks intervention duration MD=0.84,95%CI:0.59,1.10,P<0.00001;4–8 weeks MD=2.41,95%CI:0.80,4.01,P=0.003).CONCLUSIONS:Meridian massage as an alternative and complementary therapy seems to have short-term benefits in improving post-stroke motor function(particularly in the lower limbs),quality of life, clinical efficiency, and balance stability and muscle spasms. The high heterogeneity of the included studies and the low methodological quality certainly limits the confidence placed in this systematic review and Meta-analysis,warranting future well-designed studies. 展开更多
