Because of actual requirement, shield machine always excavates with an inclined angle in longitudinal direction.Since many previous studies mainly focus on the face stability of the horizontal shield tunnel, the effects of tensile strength cut-off and pore water pressure on the face stability of the longitudinally inclined shield tunnel are not well investigated.A failure mechanism of a longitudinally inclined shield tunnel face is constructed based on the spatial discretization technique and the tensile strength cut-off criterion is introduced to modify the constructed failure mechanism. The pore water pressure is introduced as an external force into the equation of virtual work and the objective function of the chamber pressure of the shield machine is obtained. Moreover, the critical chamber pressure of the longitudinally inclined shield tunnel is computed by optimal calculation.Parametric analysis indicates that both tensile strength cut-off and pore water pressure have a significant impact on the chamber pressure and the range of the collapse block. Finally, the theoretical results are compared with the numerical results calculated by FLAC3D software which proves that the proposed approach is effective. 展开更多

Earthquakes contribute to the failure of anti-dip bedding rock slopes(ABRSs)in seismically active regions. The pseudo-static method is commonly employed to assess the ABRSs stability. However, simplifying seismic effects as static loads often underestimates rock slope stability. The development of a practical stability analysis approach for ABRSs,particularly in slope engineering design,is imperative. This study proposes a stability evaluation model for ABRSs,incorporating the viscoelastic properties of rock,to quantitatively assess the safety factor and failure surface under seismic conditions. The mathematical description of the pseudo-dynamic method, derived in this study, accounts for the viscoelastic properties of ABRSs and integrates the HoekeBrown failure criterion with the Kelvin-Voigt stress-strain relationship of rocks.Furthermore,to address concurrent translation-rotation failure in ABRSs,upper bound limit analysis is utilized to quantify the safety factor.Through a comparison with existing literature, the proposed method considers the effect of harmonic vibration on the stability of ABRSs.The obtained safety factor is lower than that of the quasi-static method, with the resulting percentage change exceeding 5%.The critical failure surface demonstrates superior positional accuracy compared to the Aydan and Adhikary basal planes, with minimal error observed between the physical model test and the numerical simulation test. The parameter sensitivity analysis reveals that the inclination of ABRSs exhibits the highest sensitivity(Sk)value across the three levels of horizontal seismic coefficient(kh). The study aims to devise an expeditious calculation approach for assessing the stability of ABRSs during seismic events, intending to offer theoretical guidance for their stability analysis. 展开更多

In this paper,Isogeometric analysis(IGA)is effectively integrated with machine learning(ML)to investigate the bearing capacity of strip footings in layered soil profiles, with a focus on a sand-over-clay configuration. The study begins with the generation of a comprehensive dataset of 10,000 samples from IGA upper bound(UB)limit analyses, facilitating an in-depth examination of various material and geometric conditions.A hybrid deep neural network, specifically the Whale Optimization Algorithm-Deep Neural Network(WOA-DNN),is then employed to utilize these 10,000 outputs for precise bearing capacity predictions.Notably, the WOA-DNN model outperforms conventional ML techniques, offering a robust and accurate prediction tool. This innovative approach explores a broad range of design parameters, including sand layer depth,load-to-soil unit weight ratio, internal friction angle, cohesion, and footing roughness.A detailed analysis of the dataset reveals the significant influence of these parameters on bearing capacity, providing valuable insights for practical foundation design. This research demonstrates the usefulness of data-driven techniques in optimizing the design of shallow foundations within layered soil profiles, marking a significant stride in geotechnical engineering advancements. 展开更多

Based on the upper bound limit analysis theorem and the shear strength reduction technique, the equation for expressing critical limit-equilibrium state was employed to define the safety factor of a given slope and its corresponding critical failure mechanism by means of the kinematical approach of limit analysis theory. The nonlinear shear strength parameters were treated as variable parameters and a kinematically admissible failure mechanism was considered for calculation schemes. The iterative optimization method was adopted to obtain the safety factors. Case study and comparative analysis show that solutions presented here agree with available predictions when nonlinear criterion reduces to linear criterion, and the validity of present method could be illuminated. From the numerical results, it can also be seen that nonlinear parameter rn, slope foot gradient ,β, height of slope H, slope top gradient a and soil bulk density γ have significant effects on the safety factor of the slope. 展开更多

Extended reach wells (ERWs), especially horizontal extended reach well with a high HD (horizontal displacement) to TVD (true vertical depth) ratio, represent a frontier technology and challenge the drilling limitations. Oil and gas reservoir in beaches or lakes and offshore can be effectively exploited by using extended reach drilling (ERD) technology. This paper focuses on the difficult technological problems encountered during exploiting the Liuhua 11-1 oil field in the South China Sea, China. Emphasis is on investigating the key subjects including prediction and control of open hole limit extension in offshore ERD, prediction of casing wear and its prevention and torque reduction, φ244.5mm casing running with floating collars to control drag force, and steerable drilling modes. The basic concept of limit extension in ERD is presented and the prediction method for open hole limit extension is given in this paper. A set of advanced drilling mechanics and control technology has been established and its practical results are verified by field cases. All those efforts may be significant for further investigating and practicing ERD limit theory and control technology in the future. 展开更多

A 2D and 3D kinematically admissible rotational failure mechanism is presented for homogeneous slurry trenches in frictional/cohesive soils.Analytical approaches are derived to obtain the upper bounds on slurry trench stability in the strict framework of limit analysis. It is shown that the factor of safety from a 3D analysis will be greater than that from a 2D analysis.Compared with the limit equilibrium method, the limit analysis method yields an unconservative estimate on the safety factors.A set of examples are presented in a wide range of parameters for 2D and 3D homogeneous slurry trenches. The factor of safety increases with increasing slurry and soil bulk density ratio, cohesion, friction angle, and with decreasing slurry level depth and trench depth ratio, trench width and depth ratio. It is convenient to assess the safety for the homogeneous slurry trenches in practical applications. 展开更多

Based on the upper bound of limit analysis, the plane-strain analysis of the slopes reinforced with a row of piles to the 3D case was extended. A 3D rotational failure mechanism was adopted to yield the upper bound of the factor of safety. Parametric studies were carried out to explore the end effects of the slope failures and the effects of the pile location and diameter on the safety of the reinforced slopes. The results demonstrate that the end effects nearly have no effects on the most suitable location of the installed piles but have significant influence on the safety of the slopes. For a slope constrained to a narrow width, the slope becomes more stable owing to the contribution of the end effects. When the slope is reinforced with a row of piles in small space between piles, the effects of group piles are significant for evaluating the safety of slopes. The presented method is more appropriate for assessing the stability of slopes reinforced with piles and can be also utilized in the design of plies stabilizing the unstable slopes. 展开更多

A stability analysis approach of tunnel face considering a longitudinally inclined tunnel angle and anisotropic purely cohesive soils based on a continuous velocity field (CVF) is investigated in this study. Based on the kinematic approach of limit analysis and the discretization technique, an improved three-dimensional CVF model for longitudinally inclined tunnels driven by pressurized shields is proposed. With the proposed model, the critical support pressure acted on tunnel face is determined by the work-balance equation. A serial of finite element numerical models are conducted to validate the proposed model. Finally, the effects of tunnel inclination angles, several dimensionless parameters as well as soil anisotropy on the critical support pressure are investigated. The numerical results show that the effects of the soil anisotropy and the tunnel inclination angle on tunnel faces should be considered in the actual design of tunneling engineering. 展开更多

Based on the characteristic that the potential sliding surfaces of rock slope are commonly in the shape of either line or fold line, analysis thought of conventional pile foundation in the flat ground under complex load condition was applied and the upper-bound theorem of limit analysis was used to compute thrust of rock layers with all possible distribution shapes. The interaction of slope and pile was considered design load in terms of slope thrust, and the finite difference method was derived to calculate inner-force and displacement of bridge pile foundation in rock slope under complex load condition. The result of example shows that the distribution model of slope thrust has certain impact on displacement and inner-force of bridge pile foundation. The maximum displacement growth rate reaches 54% and the maximum moment and shear growth rates reach only 15% and 20%,respectively,but the trends of inner-force and displacement of bridge pile foundation are basically the same as those of the conventional pile foundation in the flat ground. When the piles bear the same level lateral thrust, the distribution shapes of slope thrust have different influence on inner-force of pile foundation, especially the rectangle distribution, and the triangle thrust has the smallest displacement and inner-force of pile foundation. 展开更多

Although slice methods are simple and effective slope stability analysis approaches, they are statically indeterminate.Several modifications of the slice method, such as the Spencer,MorgensternPrice, and Chen-Morgenstern methods, are statically determinate and solvable as they assume the inter-slice force inclination angle;however, there is a small gap between the assumptions and actual landslide stability analysis.Through reasonable theoretical analysis, the Su slice method provides a reliable approach for determining the inter-slice force inclination angle that can be used in slice analysis to accurately analyse, calculate, and evaluate the stability of landslides. However, the Su slice method requires further research and analysis, especially in terms of the parameter values sinλbiandρ.In this study,we investigated more accurate methods for calculating the parameters sinλbiandρ.In addition,an adjustment coefficient(μ)was introduced to improve the solution method for the inter-slice force inclination angle. The inter-slice force inclination and safety factors of three landslides with arc-shaped slip surfaces and one landslide with a polyline-shaped slip surface were analysed and compared using the different slice methods. The improved inter-slice force inclination not only satisfies the calculation of static force equilibrium condition but also satisfies the calculation of both the force and moment equilibrium conditions. The improved method for calculating inter-slice force inclination presented the best correlation. The safety factors calculated using the improved Su slice method were close to those obtained using numerical simulations and the Morgenstern-Price method.Despite negligible differences among the safety factors calculated using the Su slice, improved Su slice, and M-P methods, the accuracy of the improved Su slice method was better than the M-P method in terms of inter-slice force inclination angles which can be useful to improve protection engineering design. 展开更多

The nonlinear Hoek-Brown failure criterion was introduced to limit analysis by applying the tangent method. Based on the failure mechanism of double-logarithmic spiral curves on the face of deep rock tunnels, the analytical solutions of collapse pressure were derived through utilizing the virtual power principle in the case of pore water, and the optimal solutions of collapse pressure were obtained by using the optimization programs of mathematical model with regard of a maximum problem. In comparison with existing research with the same parameters, the consistency of change rule shows the validity of the proposed method. Moreover, parametric study indicates that nonlinear Hoek-Brown failure criterion and pore water pressure have great influence on collapse pressure and failure shape of tunnel faces in deep rock masses, particularly when the surrounding rock is too weak or under the condition of great disturbance and abundant ground water, and in this case, supporting measures should be intensified so as to prevent the occurrence of collapse. 展开更多

Based on nonlinear failure criterion,a three-dimensional failure mechanism of the possible collapse of deep tunnel is presented with limit analysis theory.Support pressure is taken into consideration in the virtual work equation performed under the upper bound theorem. It is necessary to point out that the properties of surrounding rock mass plays a vital role in the shape of collapsing rock mass. The first order reliability method and Monte Carlo simulation method are then employed to analyze the stability of presented mechanism.Different rock parameters are considered random variables to value the corresponding reliability index with an increasing applied support pressure. The reliability indexes calculated by two methods are in good agreement.Sensitivity analysis was performed and the influence of coefficient variation of rock parameters was discussed. It is shown that the tensile strength plays a much more important role in reliability index than dimensionless parameter, and that small changes occurring in the coefficient of variation would make great influence of reliability index. Thus, significant attention should be paid to the properties of surrounding rock mass and the applied support pressure to maintain the stability of tunnel can be determined for a given reliability index. 展开更多

Based on the nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and the associated flow rules, the three-dimensional(3-D)axisymmetric failure mechanism of shallow horizontal circular plate anchors that are subjected to the ultimate pullout capacity(UPC)is determined.A derivative function of the projection function for projecting the 3-D axisymmetric failure surface on plane is deduced using the variation theory.By using difference principle, the primitive function of failure surface satisfying boundary condition and numerical solution to its corresponding ultimate pullout capacity function are obtained. The influences of nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb parameters on UPC and failure mechanism are studied. The result shows that UPC decreases with dimensionless parameter m and uniaxial tensile strength increases but increases when depth and radius of plate anchor, surface overload, initial cohesion, geomaterial density and friction angle increase. The failure surface is similar to a symmetrical spatial funnel, and its shape is mainly determined by dimensionless parameter m;the surface damage range expands with the increase of radius and depth of the plate anchor as well as initial cohesion but decreases with the increase of dimensionless parameter m and uniaxial tensile strength as well as geomaterial density. As the dimensionless parameter m=2.0,the numerical solution of UPC based on the difference principle is proved to be feasible and effective through the comparison with the exact solution. In addition, the comparison between solutions of UPC computed by variation method and those computed by upper bound method indicate that variation method outperforms upper bound method. 展开更多

Long time monitoring is acquired to obtain the displacement data for displacement-based geotechnical material back analysis, and these data are hard to be measured under some special condition, such as earthquake. For a simple homogeneous slope, the position of a critical failure surface is determined by value of c/tan ~b. Utilizing upper bound theorem of limit analysis, the external work rate and internal energy for normal slope under earthquake forces are given, and the formula for minimum safety factor is derived. On this basis, the equation of slip surface and the surface depth of a given position are solved. In this way, the strength parameter can be analyzed by known slip surface depth. For practical use, the surface depth for a given slope under varying strength parameter is presented. Finally, two examples are given to show its simplicity and effectiveness. 展开更多

A generalized nonlinear Baker failure criterion is employed with the upper bound limit analysis to study the surrounding rock stability of underground cavities. A three-dimensional(3D) failure mode is established by extending the two-dimensional(2D) failure mode, which offers an upper bound expression of the surrounding rock pressure. This method is validated with a series of examples before the influence of four parameters of scale parameter, curvature parameter, shift parameter and lateral pressure coefficient, on the surrounding rock pressure is analyzed. According to these results, failure ranges of the underground cavities are determined. The following conclusions are reached:(1) the proposed approach is more accurate to predict surrounding rock pressure than the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion;(2) the surrounding rock with large scale parameter, curvature parameter, shift parameter, and lateral pressure coefficient can lead to a more stable underground cavity;(3) the failure range in 3D mode can be predicted according to the upper bound solutions. 展开更多

In order to maintain the safety of underground constructions that significantly involve geo-material uncertainties, this paper delivers a new computation framework for conducting reliability-based design(RBD)of shallow tunnel face stability, utilizing a simplified inverse first-order reliability method(FORM).The limit state functions defining tunnel face stability are established for both collapse and blow-out modes of the tunnel face failure, respectively, and the deterministic results of the tunnel face support pressure are obtained through three-dimensional finite element limit analysis(FELA).Because the inverse reliability method can directly capture the design support pressure according to prescribed target reliability index, the computational cost for probabilistic design of tunnel face stability is greatly reduced.By comparison with Monte Carlo simulation results, the accuracy and feasibility of the proposed method are verified.Further, this study presents a series of reliability-based design charts for vividly understanding the limit support pressure on tunnel face in both cohesionless(sandy)soil and cohesive soil stratums, and their optimal support pressure ranges are highlighted. The results show that in the case of sandy soil stratum, the blowout failure of tunnel face is extremely unlikely, whereas the collapse is the only possible failure mode. The parametric study of various geotechnical uncertainties also reveals that ignoring the potential correlation between soil shear strength parameters will lead to over-designed support pressure, and the coefficient of variation of internal friction angle has a greater influence on the tunnel face failure probability than that of the cohesion. 展开更多
