Arsenic is selectively extracted from high-arsenic dust by NaOH-Na2S alkaline leaching process. In the leaching arsenic process, the effects of alkali-to-dust ratio, sodium sulfide addition, leaching temperature, leaching time and liquid-to-solid ratio on metals leaching efficiencies were investigated. The results show that the arsenic can be effectively separated from other metals under the optimum conditions of alkali/dust mass ratio of 0.5, sodium sulfide addition of 0.25 g/g, leaching temperature of 90 ℃, leaching time of 2 h, and liquid-to-solid ratio of 5:1 (mL/g). Under these conditions, the average leaching efficiencies of arsenic, antimony, lead, tin and zinc are 92.75%, 11.68%, 0.31%, 29.75% and 36.85%, respectively. The NaOH-Na2S alkaline leaching process provides a simple and highly efficient way to remove arsenic from high-arsenic dust, leaving residue as a suitable lead resource. 展开更多

The leaching behavior of main metallic sulphides in zinc concentrate under atmospheric oxygen-rich direct leaching conditions was studied through mineralogical analysis. The results show that the sulphides dissolve obviously except pyrite. Based on the relationship between elemental sulfur and the residual sulphides in the leaching residue, the dissolution of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, covellite and galena is assumed to follow the indirect oxidation reactions, where the acidic dissolution takes place firstly and then the released H2S transfers from the mineral surface into bulk solution and is further oxidized into elemental sulfur. The interface chemical reaction is further supposed as the controlling step in the leaching of these sulphides. The direct electrochemical oxidation reactions are assumed to contribute to the dissolution of pyrrhotite, which is controlled by the diffusion through elemental sulfur layer. 展开更多

The leaching behaviors of calcium and magnesium in the rare earth tailings leached with magnesium sulfate using deionized water,CaCl2 solution and lime water were investigated.Experimental data indicated that magnesium in the tailings was easy to be leached out since most of the magnesium was in the form of water-soluble phase. Most of calcium in the lime water was electrostatically adsorbed on the clay mineral of the tailings, and the water-soluble magnesium was also gradually converted into exchangeable phase because of back-adsorption of Mg2+on the clay mineral with increasing the pH values. When the liquid-to-solid ratio was 0.80,the contents of readily-available magnesium and calcium were 104.4−207.6 and 201.7−1426.3 mg/kg,respectively,which could meet the requirements for plants. These results suggest a promising route for the environmental remediation of ion-adsorption rare earth ore after in-situ leaching. 展开更多

Increasing attention has been paid to air pollution control (APC) residues in China recently due to the rising proportion of waste incineration and the hazardous characteristics of the residues, among which heavy metal leaching toxicity plays an important role. Leaching behavior and potential risk of Pb and Zn in the APC residues from a Shanghai municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator was studied, based on the leaching tests under different conditions and theoretical calculation using a geochemical thermodynamic equilibrium model MINTEQA2. Results showed that, extractant species and liquid to solid (L/S) ratio predominantly controlled the leaching toxicity of Pb and Zn, while ionic strength, vibration method and leaching time had less effect on the metals release. Leachate/final pH determined the metal leaching behavior, which changed the speciation of heavy metals in the extraction system. The equilibrium aqueous speciation, precipitation-dissolution of Pb and Zn was investigated according to the model computation, which was well in agreement with the experimental results. 展开更多

The effect of temperature on leaching behavior of copper minerals with different occurrence states in complex copper oxide ores was carried out by phase analysis means of XRD, optical microscopy and SEM-EDS. The results indicated that at ambient temperature, the easily leached copper oxide minerals were completely dissolved, while the bonded copper minerals were insoluble. At lukewarm temperature of 40℃, it was mainly the dissolution of copper in isomorphism state. With increasing temperature to 60℃, the copper leaching rate in the adsorbed state was significantly accelerated. In addition, when the temperature increased to 80℃, the isomorphic copper was completely leached, leaving 11.2% adsorbed copper un-leached. However, the copper in feldspar-quartz-copper-iron colloid state was not dissolved throughout the leaching process. Overall, the leaching rates of copper in different copper minerals decreased in the order: malachite, pseudo-malachite > chrysocolla > copper-bearing chlorite > copper-bearing muscovite > copper-bearing biotite > copper-bearing limonite > feldspar-quartz-copper-iron colloid. 展开更多

Zinc extraction from crude zinc oxide(CZO)is beneficial to the full utilization of secondary resources and environmental protection. In this paper,a systematic investigation was carried out to study the leaching behavior of CZO by using ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution. It was found that the maximum leaching rate of zinc from CZO dust was 95.7%under the conditions of[Zn]T:[NH 3]T:[CO_(3)^(2−)]=1:7.00:1.75,liquid to solid ratio 5:1,leaching temperature 30℃ and leaching time 60 min.Compared with pure zinc oxide(PZO)leaching, the CZO leaching required longer time and more leaching agents, which is caused by the Cd^(2+),Pb^(2+) and other metal cationic impurities in CZO.The metal cationic impurities dissolved in the leaching solution and combined with ammonium to form complexes, consuming leaching agents and affecting zinc leaching. 展开更多

A hydrometallurgical process was developed for recycling pharmaceutical blisters.Leaching aluminum from pharmaceutical blisters using sodium hydroxide(NaOH) solutions was investigated with respect to leaching behaviors and kinetics.AL9(34) orthogonal design of experiments suggests that the most significant factor is NaOH concentration followed by temperature and leaching time.Factorial experiments demonstrate that the leaching rate of aluminum increases with increasing of the factors. The optimum conditions are temperature of 70 °C,leaching time of 20 min,NaOH concentration of 1.25 mol/L,liquid-to-solid mass ratio of 15:1 and agitation speed of 400 r/min.Under optimum conditions, the leaching rate is up to 100%,implying that aluminum and polyvinyl chloride(PVC) plastic in pharmaceutical blisters are separated completely.Kinetics of leaching aluminum is best described by the product layer diffusion control model, and the activation energy is calculated to be 19.26 kJ/mol. 展开更多

The relationship between Pb leaching concentration and the solution's pH with time was analyzed when cement in its solidified form was leached in an acid medium. The effects of the particle size of the solidified form, the cement adding method, and the hydration degree on Pb solidification were also investigated. The experimental results indicate that cement is quickly dissolved and hydrated in the acid medium, forming a C-S-H gel or silicic acid sol with good adsorption. When cement-Pb solidified form is leached in an acetate solution, the hydrated product erodes with time, so the Pb concentration increases slightly in the beginning. Then, some of the Pb ions are absorbed by the newly generated silicic acid sol, C-S-H. Others produce Pb(OH)2 precipitation for secondary solidification, leading to a gradual decrease in the Pb concentration in a leaching time of more than two hours. Moreover, the particle size of the solidified form has important effects on the Pb dissolution. When the amount of added cement is low, with a pH of less than 9.5, the solidification affects the sequence of the original cement powder, the cement hydrated powder, and the cement- Pb solidified form. When the added amount of cement increases with a pH of more than 11, the effect of adding methods on solidification decreases, and the solidified form is a little better than others. 展开更多

Fly ash is a hazardous byproduct of municipal solid wastes incineration (MSWI). An alkali activated blast fumace slag-based cementifious material was used to stabilize/solidify the fly ash at experimental level. The characteristics of the stabilized/solidified fly ash, including metal leachability, mineralogical characteristics and the distributions of metals in matrices, were tested by toxic characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP), X-ray diffrac- tion (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) respectively. Contin- uous acid extraction was utilized to extract metal ions and characterize their leaching behavior. The stabilization/ solidification procedure for MSWI fly ash demonstrates a strong fixing capacity for the metals by the formation of C- S-H phase, hydrated calcium aluminosilicate and ettringite. The stabilized/solidified fly ash shows a dense and homogeneous microstructure. Cr is mainly solidified in hydrated calcium aluminosilicate, C-S-H and ettringite phase through physical encapsulation, precipitation, adsorption or substitution mechanisms, and Pb is mainly solidified in C-S-H phase and absorbed in the Si-O structure. 展开更多

In t... Leaching behavior and gastrointestinal bioaccessibility of rare earth elements (REEs) from hospital waste incineration (HWI) fly and bottom ash samples collected from Beijing and Nanjing Cities were assessed. In the same ash sample, the leaching concentrations of individual REEs determined by the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) were higher than those detected by the European standard protocol (EN-type test), thereby suggesting that the low pH value of leaching solution was an important factor influencing the leacha(bility-of REE. The REE bioaccessibility results, which were evaluated using the physiologically based extraction test (PBET), indicated that REEs were highly absorbed during fgastric phase by dissolution; and subsequently precipitated and/or re-adsorbed in small intestinal phase. The relative amounts of the total REEs extracted by the TCLP method, EN-type test and PBET test were compared. In addition to the pH value of extraction solutions, the chelating role of REEs witllt organic ligands used in the PBET method was also an important parameter affecting REE adsorption in human body. Additionally, this study showed that REEs were extracted by these methods as concomitants of heavy metals and anions (NO3^-, F^-, SO4^2- , and Cl^-) from HWI ash, which probably caused the remarkably complex toxicity on human body by the exposure pathway. 展开更多

Two acidic ferrisols, i.e., red soil (RS) and yellow red soil (YRS), from the vicinity regions of non-ferrous ores in Hunan province of China, were leached with simulated acid rain through artificial column experiments. The results show that the total leaching mass of metals are m(Zn)〉m(Cu)〉m(Cd) from the original soils and m(Cd)〉m(Zn)〉〉 m(Cu) from the contaminated soils with external metals after leaching for 60 d continuously, leaching quantities of Cd and Zn from the contaminated red soil (CRS) are more than that from the contaminated yellow red soil (CYRS), but for Cu, it is almost the same. The preferential fractions for leaching are mainly in exchangeable forms, and content of exchangeable forms decreases significantly in the contaminated soil profiles. The unstable fractions of Cd, Cu and Zn in the RS and YRS increase significantly with the decrease of pH value of simulated acid rain. Changes of fi, actions of external Cd, Cu, and Zn in the residual CRS and CYRS profiles are significantly affected by the acidity of acid rain, too. After leaching for 60 d continuously, Cd exists mostly in exchangeable form, Cu exists mainly in exchangeable, manganese oxide-occluded and organically bounding forms, and Zn exists in residual in CRS and CYRS profiles. Most of exchangeable Cd and Zn exist only small in surface layer (0-20 cm) and are transferred to the sub-layers, contrarily, Cu accumulates mostly in the topsoil (0-20 cm) with low translocation. 展开更多

Phosphogypsum(PG)is a typical by-product of phosphoric acid and phosphate fertilizers during acid digestion. The application of cemented paste backfill(CPB)has been feasibly investigated for the remediation of PG.The present study evaluated fluorine immobilization mechanisms and attempted to construct a related thermodynamic and geochemical modeling to describe the related stabilization performance.Physico-chemical and mineralogical analyses were performed on PG and hardened PG-based CPB(PCPB).The correlated macro-and micro-structural properties were obtained from the analysis of the combination of unconfined compressive strength and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy imaging.Acid/base-dependent leaching tests were performed to ascertain fluoride leachab-ility.In addition,Gibbs Energy Minimization Software and PHREEQC were applied as tools to characterize the PCPB hydration and deduce its geochemical characteristics. The results proved that multiple factors are involved in fluorine stabilization, among which the calcium silicate hy-drate gel was found to be associated with retention.Although the quantitative comparison with the experimental data shows that further modi-fication should be introduced into the simulation before being used as a predictive implement to determine PG management options, the im-portance of acid/base concentration in regulating the leaching behavior was confirmed. Moreover, the modeling enabled the identification of the impurity phases controlling the stability and leachability. 展开更多

Impact of waste fuels(virgin/waste wood, mixed biofuel(peat, bark, wood chips) industrial, household, mixed waste fuel) and incineration technologies on partitioning and leaching behavior of trace elements has been investigated. Study included 4 grate fired and 9 fluidized boilers. Results showed that mixed waste incineration mostly caused increased transfer of trace elements to fly ash; particularly Pb/Zn. Waste wood incineration showed higher transfer of Cr,As and Zn to fly ash as compared to virgin wood. The possible reasons could be high input of trace element in waste fuel/change in volatilization behavior due to addition of certain waste fractions. The concentration of Cd and Zn increased in fly ash with incineration temperature.Total concentration in ashes decreased in order of Zn 〉 Cu 〉 Pb 〉 Cr 〉 Sb 〉 As 〉 Mo. The concentration levels of trace elements were mostly higher in fluidized boilers fly ashes as compared to grate boilers(especially for biofuel incineration). It might be attributed to high combustion efficiency due to pre-treatment of waste in fluidized boilers. Leaching results indicated that water soluble forms of elements in ashes were low with few exceptions.Concentration levels in ash and ash matrix properties(association of elements on ash particles)are crucial parameters affecting leaching. Leached amounts of Pb, Zn and Cr in 〉50% of fly ashes exceeded regulatory limit for disposal. 87% of chlorine in fly ashes washed out with water at the liquid to solid ratio 10 indicating excessive presence of alkali metal chlorides/alkaline earths. 展开更多

The corrosion behaviors of Sn-0.75Cu solder and Sn-0.75Cu/Cu joint in 3.5% NaCl(mass fraction) solution were studied by potentiodynamic polarization test and leaching measurement. The polarization curves indicated that the corrosion rate of Sn-0.75Cu solder was lower than that of Sn-0.75Cu/Cu joint. The morphology observation and phase composition analysis on the corroded product at each interesting potential suggested that Sn3O(OH)2Cl2 formed on the surface of Sn-0.75Cu solder at active dissolution stage. As the potential increased from active/passive transition stage, all the surface of Sn-0.75Cu solder was covered by the Sn3O(OH)2Cl2 and some pits appeared after the polarization test.Compared to the Sn-0.75Cu solder alloy, much more Sn3O(OH)2Cl2 formed at active dissolution stage and the pits with bigger size were observed after polarization test for the Sn-0.75Cu/Cu solder joints. The leaching test confirmed that the faster electrochemical corrosion rate resulted in the larger amount of Sn released from the Sn-0.75Cu/Cu solder joints. 展开更多

Steel slag(SS)is one of byproduct of steel manufacture industry. The environmental concerns of SS may limit their re-use in different applications. The goal of this study was to investigate the leaching behavior of metals from SS before and after treated by microbially induced carbonate precipitation(MICP).Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure, synthetic precipitation leaching procedure and water leaching tests were performed to evaluate the leaching behavior of major elements(Fe,Mg and Ca)and trace elements(Ba,Cu and Mn)in three scenarios. The concentrations of leaching metals increased with the content of SS.After it reached the peak concentration, the leaching concentration decreased with the content of SS.The leachability of all elements concerned in this study was below 0.5%.The carbonate generated from the MICP process contributed to the low leachability of metals. After bio-modified by MICP process, the leaching concentrations of Ba from TCLP,SPLP and WLT tests were below 2.0 mg/L,which was the limit in drinking water regulated by U.S.EPA.The concentrations of Cu leached out from MICP-treated SS-sand samples were below 1.3 mg/L which is the limit regulated by national secondary drinking water.Compared with the regulations of U.S.EPA and Mississippi Department of Environment Quality(MDEQ),MICP-treated samples were classified as non-hazardous materials with respects to the leaching of metals.Meanwhile, maximum contaminant limits regulated by U.S.EPA states that MICP-treated SS are eco-friendly materials that can be reused as construction materials. 展开更多

A detailed understanding of the composition, buffering capacity, surface charge property, and metals leaching behavior of bauxite residue is the key to improved management, both in reducing the environmental impact and using the material as an industrial by-product for other applications. In this study, physical, chemical, and surface charge properties of bauxite residue derived from a combined process were investigated. Results indicated that the main alkaline solids in bauxite residue were katoite, sodalite, and calcite. These minerals also lead to a higher acid neutralizing capacity of bauxite residue.Acid neutralizing capacity(ANC)to pH 7.0 of this residue is about 0.9 mol H^+/kg solid.Meanwhile, the Fe-,Al-,and Si-containing minerals in bauxite residue resulted in an active surface; The isoelectric point(IEP)and point of zero charge(PZC)were 7.88 and 7.65,respectively.This also leads to a fact that most of the metals in bauxite residue were adsorbed by these surface charged solids, which makes the metals not readily move under natural or even moderately acidic conditions. The leaching behavior of metals as a function of pH indicated that the metals in bauxite residue present low release concentrations(pH>3). 展开更多

The effects of basicities and equilibrium temperatures on the enrichment of chromium in different mineral phases of synthesized argon-oxygen decarburization slags were investigated to understand the Cr concentrating behavior into Mg(Cr,Al)2O4 spinel phase and to determine the leaching stability of Cr-containing slag. The results showed that when the basicity decreased from 1.0 to 0.6 and temperatures decreased from 1600 to 800℃,the Cr content of amorphous phase and crystalline phase gradually decreased, with a subsequent increase in the Cr content of spinel phase. The range of Cr enrichment in spinel of slags S1,S2,and S3 is 92.03-96.89,91.63-96.36,and 90.67-95.42,respectively.The mass fraction and the size of spinel increased with the decreasing equilibrium temperatures, and the Cr leaching values decreased simultaneously. Therefore, the trend of the amount of Cr-related ions in the leachate was consistent with the trend of Cr in the amorphous phase, diopside, and akermanite. The results suggest that the lower basicity and equilibrium temperatures could be conducive to stabilizing Cr into spinel phase to minimize Cr leaching into the environment. 展开更多
