Effects of internals on macroscopic fluid dynamics in a bubble column

The effects of internals on liquid mixing and gas-liquid mass transfer have rarely been investigated in bubble columns,and the commonly used measurement method overestimates significantly overall gas holdup.Firstly,gas holdup measurement method is improved by conducting multi-point liquid level measurement and using net fluid volume instead of bed volume to calculate gas holdup.Then,a stable conductivity method for liquid macromixing has been established by shielding large bubbles using#16nylon mesh.Subsequently,the influences of internal coverage(=12.6%,18.9% and 25.1%) on macroscopic fluid dynamics in a bubble column with a free wall area are systematically investigated.It is found that the presence of internals has a notable effect on macroscopic fluid dynamics.The overall gas holdup and gas-liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient decrease,and the macromixing time decreases with the increase of internal cross-sectional area coverage.These are mainly caused by the uneven distribution of airflow due to the low resistance in the free wall area.This design makes maintenance easier,but in reality,the reactor performance has decreased.Further improvements will be made to the reactor performance based on such a configuration through flow guidance using baffles. 展开更多

Five different internals were designed,and their effects on phase holdup and backmixing were investigated in a gas–liquid concurrent upflow reactor where the spherical alumina packing particles of three diameters(3.0,4.5 and6.0 mm)were slightly expanded under the conditions of varied superficial gas velocities(6.77×10^(-2)-3.61×10^(-1) m·s^(-1))and superficial liquid velocities(9.47×10^(-4)-2.17×10^(-3) m·s^(-1)).The experimental results show that the gas holdup increases with the superficial gas velocity and particle size,opposite to the variational trend of liquid holdup.When an internal component is installed amid the upflow reactor,a higher gas holdup,a less liquid holdup and a larger Peclet number characterizing the weaker backmixing are obtained compared to those in the bed without internals under the same operating conditions.Additionally,the minimal backmixing is observed in the reactor equipped with the internals with a novel multi-step design.Finally,empirical correlations were proposed for estimating gas holdup,liquid holdup and Peclet number with the relative deviations within 11%,12%and 25%,respectively. 展开更多

Hydrodynamics characterization in terms offlow regime behavior is a crucial task to enhance the design of bubble column reactors and scaling up related methodologies.This review presents recent studies on the typicalflow regimes established in bubble columns.Some effort is also provided to introduce relevant definitions pertaining to thisfield,namely,that of“void fraction”and related(local,chordal,cross-sectional and volumetric)variants.Experimental studies involving different parameters that affect design and operating conditions are also discussed in detail.In the second part of the review,the attention is shifted to cases with internals of various types(perfo-rated plates,baffles,vibrating helical springs,mixers,and heat exchanger tubes)immersed in the bubble columns.It is shown that the presence of these elements has a limited influence on the global column hydrodynamics.However,they can make the homogeneousflow regime more stable in terms of transition gas velocity and transi-tion holdup value.The last section is used to highlight gaps which have not beenfilled yet and future directions of investigation. 展开更多

A uniform radial distribution for solids fraction and particle velocity achieves near the internals. The turbulent velocity of particles near the wall increases with the addition of the internals, with the lateral solids mixing enhanced significantly. Probability density distribution of particle velocity is bimodal in the riser with internals, which is similar to that in the conventional riser, indicating that no significant difference in the micro flow structure exists between the riser with internals and the conventional riser. At the same time, the axial solids mixing behavior changes insignificantly with the addition of internals. These results indicate that the micro flow structure in the riser is very stable, which changes insignificantly with the change of the bed structure. 展开更多

Effect of bluff internals on the hydrodynamics and lateral gas mixing was studied in a 0.186m ID high-density riser. With the bluff internals, the extremely non-uniform radial profiles of solid fraction and particle velocity become flat and the dense downflow layer near the wall disappears, indicating the significant enhancement of solid turbulence introduced by the internals. The fluctuation velocity and solid fraction transient signal analysis indicates a significant increase in fluctuation intensity near the wall region. The length influenced by the internals on the flow structure is about 1 meter. The lateral gas dispersion coefficient increases significantly as the bluff internals exist in the riser. 展开更多

This study investigated the characteristics of pyrolysis for waste tire particles in the newly developed fixed-bed reactor with internals that are a central gas collection channel mounted inside reactor.And a few metallic plates vertically welded on the internal wall of the reactors and extending to the region closing their central gas collection pipe walls.Experiments were conducted in two laboratory fixed bed reactors with or without the internals.The results shown that employing internals produced more light oil at externally heating temperatures above 700℃due to the inhibited secondary reactions in the reactor.The oil from the reactor with internals contained more aliphatic hydrocarbons and fewer aromatic hydrocarbons,leading to its higher H/C atomic ratios as for crude petroleum oil.The char yield was relatively stable for two beds and showed the higher heating values(HHVs)of about 23 MJ/kg.The gaseous product of pyrolysis mainly consisted of H2 and CH4,but the use of internals led to less pyrolysis gas through its promotion of oil production. 展开更多

The structural optimization of baffle internals for fast pyrolysis of coal with particulate mixing and heat transfer in a downer reactor using the discrete element method(DEM)has been investigated in this research.The pyrolysis terminal temperature at the exit of the downer reactor is not only decided by the volume-feeding-rate ratio of the coal to the sand,but also is affected by the inner structural design of the baffle internals in the downer reactor.As presented in the previous publication of the author,the inhibition from the baffle internals in a downer reactor can improve the particulate-mixing degree and heat carrier,and increase the mean residence time of the coal and heat-carrier particles in the downer reactor.The structure of the baffle internals in the downer reactor mentioned in this research can be optimized by the independently developed 3D soft-sphere model of the DEM programme of a 40-mm baffle length,a 30°baffle-slope angle and at least four baffles designed in the downer reactor,which is beneficial for the process design of coal pyrolysis with a heat carrier in the downer reactor. 展开更多

This article investigates the robust current tracking control problem of three-phase grid-connected inverters with LCL filter under external disturbance by a dynamic state feedback control method.First,this paper constructs an internal model to learn the information of the states and input of the grid-connected inverter under steady state.Second,by utilizing the internal model principle,the paper turns the tracking control problem into the robust stabilization control problem based on some appropriate coordinate transformations.Then,The paper designs a dynamics state feedback control law to deal with this robust stabilization problem,and thus the solution of the robust current tracking control problem of three-phase grid-connected inverters can be obtained.This control method can ensure the asymptotic stability of the closedloop system.Finally,the paper illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed control approach through several groups of simulations,and compares it with the feedforward control method to verify the robustness of the proposed control method to uncertain parameters. 展开更多
