Homogenization-based numerical framework of second-phase reinforced alloys integrating strain gradient effects

The acuurate prediction of the time-dependent mechanical behavior and deformation mechanisms of second-phase reinforced alloys under size effects is critical for the development of high-strength ductile metals and alloys for dynamic applications.However,solving their responses using high-fidelity numerical methods is computationally expensive and,in many cases,impractical.To address this issue,a dual-scale incremental variational formulation is proposed that incorporates the influence of plastic gradients on plastic evolution characteristics,integrating a strain-rate-dependent strain gradient plasticity model and including plastic gradients in the inelastic dissipation potential.Subsequently,two minimization problems based on the energy dissipation mechanisms of strain gradient plasticity,corresponding to the macroscopic and microscopic structures,are solved,leading to the development of a homogenization-based dual-scale solution algorithm.Finally,the effectiveness of the variational model and tangent algorithm is validated through a series of numerical simulations.The contributions of this work are as follows:first,it advances the theory of self-consistent computational homogenization modeling based on the energy dissipation mechanisms of plastic strain rates and their gradients,along with the development of a rigorous multi-level finite element method(FE2)solution procedure;second,the proposed algorithm provides an efficient and accurate method for evaluating the time-dependent mechanical behavior of second-phase reinforced alloys under strain gradient effects,exploring how these effects vary with the strain rate,and investigating their potential interactions. 展开更多

The Da-Xiao Liangshan mountains are critical ecological function areas and essential ecological barriers in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in China.This study selected a total of six periods of land use land cover(LULC)data from 1995 to 2020,to estimate the ecosystem service value(ESV)and analyzed its spatiotemporal evolution and topographic gradient divergence.The results showed that:(1)The ESV increased by 1.1 billion yuan,with an increase rate of 1.47%from 1995 to 2020.Two time periods,2005–2010 and 2015–2020,showed more significant increases than other periods.(2)The elevation and slope of mountainous areas determine the type of land use and further influence the spatial pattern of ESV.(3)Although woodland and grassland are the main land use types of the study area(more than 90%),the hydrological regulation function of the water area partially compensated for the impact of the encroachment of the built-up area on the ESV of grassland.(4)The spatial distribution of ESVs showed an inverted V-shaped characteristic as the topographic gradient increased,with the dominant position being the 5th topographic gradient zone.Finally,this study provided relevant recommendations for ecosystem protection and optimization.The findings of this study clarified the influence of topographical factors on the spatial differentiation of ESV and provided novel insights into ecosystem protection. 展开更多

The Lhasa River Basin forms an essential human settlement area in the southern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.This study employed ecosystem service value(ESV)evaluation model,terrain gradient grading,and Geodetector to analyze land use and ESV in the Lhasa River Basin from 1985 to 2020.The findings reveal that:(1)From 1985 to 2020,grassland was the dominant land use.There was a trend of grassland reduction and the expansion of other land types.(2)ESV has increased over the research period(with a total increase of 0.84%),with higher values in the southeast and lower values in the northwest.Grassland contributed the most to ESV,and climate regulation and hydrological regulation were the ecosystem services that contribute the most to ESV.(3)Natural factors like NDVI and altitude,as well as economic factors like population density and distance from roads,influenced the spatial differentiation of ESV,the explanatory power of NDVI reached up to 0.47.The interaction between factors had a greater impact than individual factors.These research results can provide theoretical support for national spatial planning and ecological environment protection in the Lhasa River Basin and other similar areas. 展开更多

The strain gradient effect becomes significant when the size of frac- ture process zone around a crack tip is comparable to the intrinsic material length l, typically of the order of microns. Using the new strain gradient deformation theory given by Chen and Wang, the asymptotic fields near a crack tip in an elastic-plastic material with strain gradient effects are investigated. It is established that the dom- inant strain field is irrotational. For mode Ⅰ plane stress crack tip asymptotic field, the stress asymptotic field and the couple stress asymptotic field can not exist si- multaneously. In the stress dominated asymptotic field, the angular distributions of stresses are consistent with the classical plane stress HRR field; In the couple stress dominated asymptotic field, the angular distributions of couple stresses are consistent with that obtained by Huang et al. For mode Ⅱ plane stress and plane strain crack tip asymptotic fields, only the stress-dominated asymptotic fields exist. The couple stress asymptotic field is less singular than the stress asymptotic fields. The stress asymptotic fields are the same as mode Ⅱ plane stress and plane strain HRR fields, respectively. The increase in stresses is not observed in strain gradient plasticity for mode Ⅰ and mode Ⅱ, because the present theory is based only on the rotational gradi- ent of deformation and the crack tip asymptotic fields are irrotational and dominated by the stretching gradient. 展开更多

Heat exhaustion is a prevalent heat-related illness among firefighters,posing a severe threat to life without timely intervention.However,current firefighter garments are limited by their singular functionality and cannot collect or analyze body fluid during rescue missions.Here,we introduce a wetting gradient effect assisted ultrasensitive meta-garment that incorporates multi-signal biomonitoring,offering an early warning system for heat exhaustion risk.This design enables real-time detection of heart rate,pH value,and the concentrations of glucose,sodium,and potassium in sweat.Benefiting from the surface energy difference,gradient wettability surfaces can be formed,allowing for precise point-to-point fluid control and regulation.Thus,the biosensing fibers require the lowest detection volume(0.1μL)and fastest response time(1.4 s)reported to date.This innovative garment provides a practical solution for early health warning based on abnormal multi-biomarker changes,representing a significant advancement in firefighter safety. 展开更多

The pH gradient caused by H^(+)/OH^(−)transport on an electrode surface is the key factor determining reaction performance,but its detailed impact on the electrode reaction kinetics has yet to be clarified.Here,the pH gradient effect was determined by developing electrode reaction equations,considering the overpotential assigned to the pH gradient called pH overpotential.The pH gradient effect was revealed to involve two aspects:(1)the Nernst pH overpotential,accounting for the common Nernst relationship with pH,and(2)the pH-dependent function of the electron-transfer coefficient(α_(pH)).Both parts were verified experimentally using oxygen reduction reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction,obviously,with differentα_(pH) functions.Detailedα_(pH) function effect was clarified based on numerical calculations of the electrode reaction equations.We found that the effect could be assessed suitably by an apparent constant(α_(app))and a nonlinear fitting method proposed forα_(app) value estimation.The results of this study provide the kinetic fundamentals of electrode reactions involving H^(+)/OH^(−)and contribute to the understanding and assessment of their performance with the H^(+)/OH^(−)transport effect. 展开更多

A high accuracy test of the weak equivalence principle(WEP) is of great scientific significance no matter whether its result is positive. We analyze the gravity gradient effect which is a main systematic error source in the test of WEP.The result shows that the uncompensated gravity gradient effect from the coupling term of the dominated gravity gradient multipole moment component q_(21) and the relative multipole field component Q_(21) contributes to an uncertainty of 1×10^(-11) on the E otv os parameter. We make a Q_(21) compensation to reduce the effect by about 20 times, and the limit of the test precision due to this coupling is improved to a level of a part in 10^(13). 展开更多

As a result of the nonlinear effect, acoustic streaming has been widely used for increasing the transport coefficient or driving a rotor, for example, in resonant cavities and non-contact ultrasonic motors. It has been demonstrated by experiments that a temperature gradient transverse to the wave propagating direction can significantly increase the velocity of the streaming flows in resonant cavities. To check whether the transverse temperature gradient can also increase the working velocity of acoustic streaming-driven motors, we investigate this issue by numerically solving the hydrodynamic equations. It is found that the velocity of the rotor only weakly depends on the transverse temperature gradient, e.g., even with a temperature difference of 40℃ between the rotor and the stator, the velocity increases only -8.8%. 展开更多

The paper concerns the issue of size law,localized deformation and dilation or compaction due to shear localization. It is assumed that the shear localization initiates at the peak shear stress in the form of single shear band,and based on gradient-dependent plasticity,an analytical solution on size effect or snap-back is obtained. The results show that the post peak response becomes steeper and even exhibits snap-back with increasing of length. For small specimen,the relative shear displacement when specimen failure occurs is lower than that of larger specimen and the shear stress-relative displacement curve becomes steeper. The theoretical solution on non-uniformity of strains in shear band is obtained and evolution of the relative shear displacement is represented. By resorting to the linear relation between local plastic shear strain and local plastic volumetric strain,the dilation and compaction within shear band are analyzed. Relation between apparent shear strain and apparent normal strain and relation between shear displacement and vertical displacement are established. 展开更多

Nanocrystalline surface layers and gradient nanostructure in 5182 aluminum alloy have been produced through surface mechanical attrition treatment(SMAT). The results indicate that the gradient nanostructure can not only improve the mechanical properties of 5182 Al alloy, but also has a certain effect on the Portevin-Le Chatelier(PLC) effect. The yield and ultimate tensile strength of 5182 Al alloy with SMAT are significantly improved combining with the decrease of fracture elongation compared with the as-received one. The PLC effect of 5182 Al alloy could be effectively postponed by the formation of gradient nanostructure after SMAT. It leads to the increase of critical strain of the PLC effect, more concentrated distribution of serrated strain, and increase of average stress amplitude in special strain range. The influence of grain size and gradient nanostructure on the PLC effect of 5182 Al alloy was also discussed in detail. Grain refinement could sharply increase the density of dislocations and hinder the movement of dislocations, which results in the decrease of moving speed of dislocations and the more concentrated distribution of solute atoms. The solute atoms would aggregate to form nano precipitates and further impede movement of dislocation. The stronger interaction between the dislocations and the nano precipitates is the main mechanism of postponed PLC effect. 展开更多

以兰州市为研究区域,研究碳储量时空演变及其地形梯度效应,对研究区未来提升生态环境质量和维护生态安全屏障提供理论依据.基于1980年、1990年、2000年、2010年和2020年这5期土地利用数据,运用InVEST模型分析了研究区碳储量时空变化,采... 以兰州市为研究区域,研究碳储量时空演变及其地形梯度效应,对研究区未来提升生态环境质量和维护生态安全屏障提供理论依据.基于1980年、1990年、2000年、2010年和2020年这5期土地利用数据,运用InVEST模型分析了研究区碳储量时空变化,采用地形位指数、地理探测器及空间数据分析方法,对兰州市碳储量地形梯度效应时空演变和影响因素进行综合分析.结果表明:(1)1980~2020年兰州市耕地和草地的逐年减少,以及建设用地和未利用地面积增加造成碳储量整体呈下降趋势,碳储量空间分布最终呈现为“西北高-北低-中低-东南高”的格局.(2)1980~2020年兰州市碳储量随地形梯度增加而变化,具有显著的地形梯度效应,碳储量极低和中等区域在第1梯度分布指数较高,碳储量极高区域在第5梯度优势明显.(3)归一化植被指数、夜间灯光强度、GDP、年平均气温和年平均降水是不同梯度等级下碳储量空间格局分异的主要影响因素,NDVI与夜间灯光强度、GDP、年平均气温和年平均降水的交互作用显著.研究结果可为黄河中上游流域城市生态保护和高质量发展提供借鉴,并为促进河谷山地型城市生态可持续发展提供理论支撑. 展开更多

The classical piezoelectric theory fails to capture the size-dependent electromechanical coupling behaviors of piezoelectric microstructures due to the lack of material length-scale parameters.This study presents the constitutive relations of a piezoelectric material in terms of irreducible transversely isotropic tensors that include material length-scale parameters.Using these relations and the general strain gradient theory,a size-dependent bending model is proposed for a bilayer cantilever microbeam consisting of a transversely isotropic piezoelectric layer and an isotropic elastic layer.Analytical solutions are provided for bilayer cantilever microbeams subjected to force load and voltage load.The proposed model can be simplified to the model incorporating only partial strain gradient effects.This study examines the effect of strain gradient by comparing the normalized electric potentials and deflections of different models.Numerical results show that the proposed model effectively captures size effects in piezoelectric microbeams,whereas simplified models underestimate size effects due to ignoring partial strain gradient effects. 展开更多

深入了解关键地区生态系统服务的时空演变特征及其驱动因素的交互效应,有助于制定精准的生态系统管理方案,促进区域生态系统服务的可持续供应.以重点生态功能区武陵山区为例,首先使用InVEST模型评估了该区4种关键生态系统服务并构建了ME... 深入了解关键地区生态系统服务的时空演变特征及其驱动因素的交互效应,有助于制定精准的生态系统管理方案,促进区域生态系统服务的可持续供应.以重点生态功能区武陵山区为例,首先使用InVEST模型评估了该区4种关键生态系统服务并构建了MESLI,然后采用XGBoost-SHAP分析了MESLI驱动因素的重要程度、交互效应,最后利用RCS明确驱动因素的影响阈值.结果表明:(1)2001~2020年武陵山区的各生态系统服务呈上升趋势,MESLI的均值由1.768上升至1.992,且具有显著的空间异质性,空间分布呈现东南部和西部低,北部和南部高.(2)影响MESLI的主要驱动因素是年降水量,贡献度为0.16,其次是耕地面积占比,贡献度为0.11.(3)驱动因素间存在显著的交互作用,在耕地面积占比高的地区,随着植被覆盖度和坡度的增加,对MESLI的负向影响减弱,并逐渐转变为正向影响;在人类活动足迹多的地区,随着坡度和植被覆盖度的增加,对MESLI的负向影响减弱,并逐渐转变为正向影响;在植被覆盖度低的地区,随着坡度的增加,对MESLI的影响由负向影响转变为正向影响.(4)驱动因素在交互作用影响下对MESLI的影响阈值分别为:耕地面积占比(22.91%)、年降水量(1 542.47 mm)、植被覆盖度(0.63)、坡度(15.17°)、潜在蒸散发(957.93 mm)、年平均气温(15.26℃)、高程(653.96 m)和人类活动足迹(11.56).研究结果可为武陵山区生态系统管理措施的制定提供方法参考与决策依据. 展开更多

The influences of I,article size on the mechanical properties of the particulate metal matrix composite;are obviously displayed in the experimental observations. However, the phenomenon can not be predicted directly using the conventional elastic-plastic theory. It is because that no length scale parameters are involved in the conventional theory. In the present research, using the strain gradient plasticity theory, a systematic research of the particle size effect in the particulate metal matrix composite is carried out. The roles of many composite factors, such as: the particle size, the Young's modulus of the particle, the particle aspect ratio and volume fraction, as well as the plastic strain hardening exponent of the matrix material, are studied in detail. In order to obtain a general understanding for the composite behavior, two kinds of particle shapes, ellipsoid and cylinder, are considered to check the strength dependence of the smooth or non-smooth particle surface. Finally, the prediction results will be applied to the several experiments about the ceramic particle-reinforced metal-matrix composites. The material length scale parameter is predicted. 展开更多

The threshold pressure gradient and formation stress-sensitive effect as the two prominent physical phenomena in the development of a low-permeable reservoir are both considered here for building a new coupled moving boundary model of radial flow in porous medium. Moreover, the wellbore storage and skin effect are both incorporated into the inner boundary conditions in the model. It is known that the new coupled moving boundary model has strong nonlinearity. A coordinate transformation based fully implicit finite difference method is adopted to obtain its numerical solutions. The involved coordinate transformation can equivalently transform the dynamic flow region for the moving boundary model into a fixed region as a unit circle, which is very convenient for the model computation by the finite difference method on fixed spatial grids. By comparing the numerical solution obtained from other different numerical method in the existing literature, its validity can be verified. Eventually, the effects of permeability modulus, threshold pressure gradient, wellbore storage coefficient, and skin factor on the transient wellbore pressure, the derivative, and the formation pressure distribution are analyzed respectively. 展开更多
