Rainwater w...A plastic mixture construction technology using MBER (material becoming earth into rock) soil stabilizer is introduced and the water quality of a solidified soil cistern using the technology is analyzed. Rainwater was harvested in July, 2012. Water quality of runoff and cistern water after storage was measured, including turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen, nitrate, and ammonia. Results show that pollutant concentrations in runoff decreased with time, indicating that runoff in the early time should be removed. Nitrate concentrations in cistern water increased after storage, while the remaining parameters decreased. Measured pollutant concentrations did not exceed the limit according to the standard for drinking water in China. It can be concluded that the solidified soil cistern with plastic mixture construction technology can provide available water for domestic use.展开更多

The development of the construction strategies for achieving zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) micro/nanostructures from energetic molecules is introduced. Also, an overview of the unique properties induced by micro/nanostructures and size effects is provided. Special emphasis is focused on the size-dependent properties that are different from those of the conventional micro-sized energetic materials, such as thermal decomposition, sensitivity, combustion and detonation, and compaction behaviors. Given the current situation of the Iranian construction industry, it seems almost impossible to achie...Iran needs around 1.5 million residential homes to be constructed annually to answer its cumulative demand by 2025. Given the current situation of the Iranian construction industry, it seems almost impossible to achieve this objective by using traditional methods of construction alone. Offsite manufacturing (OSM) can potentially increase the housing output in Iran thanks to its advantages over traditional methods of construction. However, OSM imposes a different set of risks which should be studied in the Iranian context. This study aims to investigate the readiness of the Iranian construction industry if offsite methods were to be introduced to the country in large industrial scales. To this end, a questionnaire survey was conducted to identify the risks and required actions in order to achieve successful application of these methods. Several subjects including costs, practicality, design and construction processes, demand, governmental policies, technology, and sustainability issues were investigated as the core research areas. The results revealed that, considering the current situations, it would be highly risky to introduce offsite methods of construction to Iran. Research findings highlight some key areas including design and construction processes, economies of scale, governmental supports, and education, which should be addressed to mitigate the identified risks.展开更多

Change orders have a significant impact on many aspects of construction projects.They are known to be the primary cause of litigation in the construction industry.Change orders are almost inevitable due to the uniquen...Change orders have a significant impact on many aspects of construction projects.They are known to be the primary cause of litigation in the construction industry.Change orders are almost inevitable due to the uniqueness of each project from many perspectives,such as the type of building,complexity of the design,human factors,and the available resources.Change orders are the formal mechanism to implement design changes during the execution phase.These changes are usually the outcome of lack of visualization by the owner,misunderstanding,miscommunication between different parties involved in the project,shortage in resources,and other factors.This research aims to investigate and rank causes,effects,and control measures of change orders in the construction industry in the U.S.This research presents the results of a questionnaire surveying owners,contractors,and consultants.A total of 123 industry professionals in the Architecture,Engineering,and Construction(AEC)field,with either significant or final decision-making authority on reviewing,issuing,and approving change orders responded to the survey.Results indicated that owners are the primary source followed by consultants and contractors,respectively.Some of the more important control measures identified in this research are collaboration and visualization technologies.展开更多
The design process of the built environment relies on the collaborative effort of all parties involved in the project.During the design phase,owners,end users,and their representatives are expected to make the most cr...The design process of the built environment relies on the collaborative effort of all parties involved in the project.During the design phase,owners,end users,and their representatives are expected to make the most critical design and budgetary decisions-shaping the essential traits of the project,hence emerge the need and necessity to create and integrate mechanisms to support the decision-making process.Design decisions should not be based on assumptions,past experiences,or imagination.An example of the numerous problems that are a result of uninformed design decisions is“change orders”,known as the deviation from the original scope of work,which leads to an increase of the overall cost,and changes to the construction schedule of the project.The long-term aim of this inquiry is to understand the user’s behavior,and establish evidence-based control measures,which are actions and processes that can be implemented in practice to decrease the volume and frequency of the occurrence of change orders.The current study developed a foundation for further examination by proposing potential control measures,and testing their efficiency,such as integrating Virtual Reality(VR).The specific aim was to examine the effect of different visualization methods(i.e.,VR vs.construction drawings)on,(1)how well the subjects understand the information presented about the future/planned environment;(2)the subjects’perceived confidence in what the future environment will look like;(3)the likelihood of changing the built environment;(4)design review time;and(5)accuracy in reviewing and understanding the design.展开更多
This paper investigates the stone masonry with timber reinforcement through the European traditional and historical architecture.It is a remarkable practice consisting of combining different materials to build up a ma...This paper investigates the stone masonry with timber reinforcement through the European traditional and historical architecture.It is a remarkable practice consisting of combining different materials to build up a masonry.This technology shows a wide variety of typological,formal,and technological types of buildings across Europe as it is strongly influenced by the nature and availability of local materials,the cultural aspects of the various communities,and the soils geological nature.As a consequence,the same constructive typology is based on different premises and leads to many interesting results.In this paper the various uses of such a mixed stone-timber masonry are shown in relation to the above mentioned factors.One of the most interesting aspect is the use of such a mix stone-timber as an anti-seismic device,especially in the Southern and Mediterranean countries,giving evidence to a great sensibility of the ancient builders to very specific topics.It is also important to stress that this traditional technology is also highly contemporary being exploited in many countries,especially in the far northern ones.Furthermore,novel regulations have been issued in order to regulate such a discipline,especially the use of timber for large structure and infrastructure.Finally,as a very common constructive technology,many historical buildings present such a mixed structural configuration,independently from the generating factors.In such a perspective,this study aims to describe the most common constructive features,as well as develop guidelines for preservation,whereas the typology is present,or design criteria for consolidation and structural improvement,whereas necessary.展开更多

文摘Change orders have a significant impact on many aspects of construction projects.They are known to be the primary cause of litigation in the construction industry.Change orders are almost inevitable due to the uniqueness of each project from many perspectives,such as the type of building,complexity of the design,human factors,and the available resources.Change orders are the formal mechanism to implement design changes during the execution phase.These changes are usually the outcome of lack of visualization by the owner,misunderstanding,miscommunication between different parties involved in the project,shortage in resources,and other factors.This research aims to investigate and rank causes,effects,and control measures of change orders in the construction industry in the U.S.This research presents the results of a questionnaire surveying owners,contractors,and consultants.A total of 123 industry professionals in the Architecture,Engineering,and Construction(AEC)field,with either significant or final decision-making authority on reviewing,issuing,and approving change orders responded to the survey.Results indicated that owners are the primary source followed by consultants and contractors,respectively.Some of the more important control measures identified in this research are collaboration and visualization technologies.
文摘The design process of the built environment relies on the collaborative effort of all parties involved in the project.During the design phase,owners,end users,and their representatives are expected to make the most critical design and budgetary decisions-shaping the essential traits of the project,hence emerge the need and necessity to create and integrate mechanisms to support the decision-making process.Design decisions should not be based on assumptions,past experiences,or imagination.An example of the numerous problems that are a result of uninformed design decisions is“change orders”,known as the deviation from the original scope of work,which leads to an increase of the overall cost,and changes to the construction schedule of the project.The long-term aim of this inquiry is to understand the user’s behavior,and establish evidence-based control measures,which are actions and processes that can be implemented in practice to decrease the volume and frequency of the occurrence of change orders.The current study developed a foundation for further examination by proposing potential control measures,and testing their efficiency,such as integrating Virtual Reality(VR).The specific aim was to examine the effect of different visualization methods(i.e.,VR vs.construction drawings)on,(1)how well the subjects understand the information presented about the future/planned environment;(2)the subjects’perceived confidence in what the future environment will look like;(3)the likelihood of changing the built environment;(4)design review time;and(5)accuracy in reviewing and understanding the design.
文摘This paper investigates the stone masonry with timber reinforcement through the European traditional and historical architecture.It is a remarkable practice consisting of combining different materials to build up a masonry.This technology shows a wide variety of typological,formal,and technological types of buildings across Europe as it is strongly influenced by the nature and availability of local materials,the cultural aspects of the various communities,and the soils geological nature.As a consequence,the same constructive typology is based on different premises and leads to many interesting results.In this paper the various uses of such a mixed stone-timber masonry are shown in relation to the above mentioned factors.One of the most interesting aspect is the use of such a mix stone-timber as an anti-seismic device,especially in the Southern and Mediterranean countries,giving evidence to a great sensibility of the ancient builders to very specific topics.It is also important to stress that this traditional technology is also highly contemporary being exploited in many countries,especially in the far northern ones.Furthermore,novel regulations have been issued in order to regulate such a discipline,especially the use of timber for large structure and infrastructure.Finally,as a very common constructive technology,many historical buildings present such a mixed structural configuration,independently from the generating factors.In such a perspective,this study aims to describe the most common constructive features,as well as develop guidelines for preservation,whereas the typology is present,or design criteria for consolidation and structural improvement,whereas necessary.
