In 316L austenitic stainless steel, the presence of ferrite phase severely affects the non-magnetic properties.316L austenitic stainless steel with low-alloy type(L-316L)and high-alloy type(H-316L)has been studied. The microstructure and solidification kinetics of the two as-cast grades were in situ observed by high temperature confocal laser scanning microscopy(HT-CLSM).There are significant differences in the as-cast microstructures of the two 316L stainless steel compositions. In L-316L steel, ferrite morphology appears as the short rods with a ferrite content of 6.98%,forming a dual-phase microstructure consisting of austenite and ferrite.Conversely,in H-316L steel, the ferrite appears as discontinuous network structures with a content of 4.41%,forming a microstructure composed of austenite and sigma(σ)phase. The alloying elements in H-316L steel exhibit a complex distribution, with Ni and Mo enriching at the austenite grain boundaries.HT-CLSM experiments provide the real-time observation of the solidification processes of both 316L specimens and reveal distinct solidification modes:L-316L steel solidifies in an FA mode, whereas H-316L steel solidifies in an AF mode. These differences result in ferrite and austenite predominantly serving as the nucleation and growth phases, respectively. The solidification mode observed by experiments is similar to the thermodynamic calculation results. The L-316L steel solidified in the FA mode and showed minimal element segregation, which lead to a direct transformation of ferrite to austenite phase(δ→γ)during phase transformation after solidification.Besides, the H-316L steel solidified in the AF mode and showed severe element segregation, which lead to Mo enrichment at grain boundaries and transformation of ferrite into sigma and austenite phases through the eutectoid reaction(δ→σ+γ). 展开更多

The influence of mischmetal (Ce-La) addition on phase transformation and as-cast microstructure characteristics of M2 high-speed steel (HSS) was investigated using Thermo-Calc software, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry. The results showed that the measured phase transition points of M2 HSS were broadly consistent with the theoretical results. After mischmetal addition, the liquidus peak temperature, the peak temperature of the eutectic precipitation of M6C and MC were all increased, especially for the M6C which was affected significantly and increased about 31 °C. The contents of Mo and V in the eutectic carbide decreased and that of Fe increased, while in the matrix, the Mo, V and Cr contents all increased slightly. Furthermore, the microstructure of as-cast dendrite and ledeburite were refined, the total eutectic carbide content decreased and distributed into a discontinuous network, the lamellar spacing of M2C was reduced and the lamellae became thinner. 展开更多

The influence of cerium treatment on the inclusion evolution and as-cast microstructure of high-strength low-alloy steel was investigated.Properties including the inclusions characteristics, element distribution, and the in situ solidification were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy,energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and high-temperature confocal laser scanning microscopy, respectively. The results indicated that, after the addition of Ce,the Al_(2)O_(3) inclusions evolved to form Ce_(2)O_(2)S and CeAlO_(3) inclusions, which exhibited a decrease in size alongside corresponding increase in their number density. The equiaxed grain ratio exhibited by the as-cast microstructure increased significantly upon the addition of Ce,while a reduction in the segregation and a corresponding increase in the homogeneity of the carbon distribution within the as-cast microstructure were also achieved. The results of the in situ observation of the solidification suggested that the addition of Ce significantly reduced the solidification temperature range, thus reducing the carbon segregation. The nucleation effect imparted by Al_(2)O_(3),Ce_(2)O_(2)S,and CeAlO_(3) on theδ-Fe formation was discussed in the context of the disregistry theory, which revealed that the formation of a large number of fine Ce_(2)O_(2)S inclusions promotedδ-Fe formation via heterogeneous nucleation. 展开更多

Effects of N and Zr on the as-cast microstructure and properties after annealing of high-speed steel (HSS) were investigated by using electronic probe micro-analysis, Rockwell hardness test, X-ray diffractometry and differential scanning calorimetry with combination of microstructure analysis. The results indicate that the addition of N and Zr will refine the eutectic structures and enhance the stability of carbides which are mainly MC, M2C and M7C3. The coarse dendritic structures decrease significantly and most of the carbides are distributed in the microstructure uniformly. Moreover, a kind of Zr-Si compound which only exists in VC is discovered, and this new phase is speculated to be related with the spheroidization of VC. The annealing process is set up to 6 different time periods which are 1, 3, 6, 10, 15 and 20 h, respectively. In different annealing processes at 750 ℃ which is lower than austenitizing temperature, the addition of N and Zr makes the decrease of hardness more obvious and restrains the precipitation of secondary carbides with the extension of time. Moreover, when the annealing time reaches 20 h, some clusters appear in the matrix of the two samples, and the density of clusters in HSS1 is lower, but the matrix of HSS1 contains more C and alloying elements which indicate more carbides precipitate. 展开更多

The as-obtained alloy was characterized and tested with respect to its microstructure and mechanical properties. The relationship between the microstructure, mechanical properties and tensile fracture mechanism were discussed, with relevant alloys as reference for comparison. Experimental results show that the same quantity of Nd was added into AZ31 in powder form or in intermediate alloy, the absorption rate of Nd reached only 10.8% for the former case and as high as 95% for the later case. Pure Nd powder was added, no new compound was detected, but it served as reductant and purified alloy melt, resulting in improving the tensile strength while Nd was added into AZ31 as Mg-Nd intermediate alloy. The compound Al2Nd and Mg12Nd were formed in magnesium alloy, which were distributed in the matrix in the shapes of strip and particle, evidently refined the as-cast structure. The as-cast tensile strength (228 MPa) of adding pure Nd powder approximated to the figure (245 MPa) of adding Mg-Nd intermediate alloy. The tensile fracture mechanism of as-cast AZ31 transformed from cleavage fracture into quasi-cleavage fracture. 展开更多

In this study, two types of as-cast microstructure produced by strip casting were cold rolled and annealed to investigate the effect of initial microstructure on the textural evolution and magnetic properties of non-oriented silicon steel. The results indicated that the cold-rolled sheets of coarse-grained strip with pronounced {100} components exhibited stronger 入 fiber(<100>//ND) and weaker γ fiber(<111>//ND)texture as composed to the fine-grained strip with strong Goss({110}(001)) texture. After annealing, the former was dominated by η fiber(<001>//RD) texture with a peak at {110}<001)orientation, while the latter consisted of strong {111}(112) and relatively weak {110}(001) texture. In addition, a number of precipitates of size ~30-150 nm restricted the grain growth during annealing, resulting in recrystallization of grain size of ~46 μm in the coarse-grained specimen and ~41μm in the fine-grained specimen.Ultimately, higher magnetic induction(~1.72 T) and lower core loss(~4.04 W/kg) were obtained in the final annealed sheets of coarse-grained strip with strong {100} texture. 展开更多

High speed steel has been widely used in various fields due to their excellent red hardness and good wear resistance. However, the influence of mischmetal (Ce-La) on the as-cast microstructures and mechanical properties of high speed steel has rarely been reported. Thus, the microstructure and mechanical properties of M2 high speed steel with addition of mischmetal (Ce-La) were investigated. The morphology and distribution of the eutectic carbides of the steel were observed by using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and the impact toughness and bending strength were tested. The results show that adding mischmetal has an obvious effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties of M2 high speed steel. The coarse eutectic structure is refined, the weak connection of the carbide networks is broken and the flake carbides become short and fine. More networks of eutectic carbides dissolve into the matrix. When a suitable adding content of mischmetal is selected, for example, 0.3 mass%, the impact strength and bending strength can increase by 27% and 10.76% compared with that without misehmetal, respectively. 展开更多

The effects of phosphorus and boron addition on the as-cast microstructure and homogenization parameters of Inconel 718 were studied. The results indicate that the addition of phosphorus and boron promotes the formation of blocky Laves phase. Due to the strong segregation behavior of boron in the final residual liquid, a low melting B-bearing phase enriched in Nb, Mo and Cr is observed. According to the differential scanning calorimeter results and electron probe micro-analysis characterization, the solidification sequence of Inconel 718 with phosphorus and boron addition in best combination is determined as L→L+γ→L+γ+MC→L+γ+MC+Laves→γ+MC+Laves+MC+Laves+B-bearing phase. Accordingly, the homogenization temperature is recommended to be adjusted at least 40°C lower than that of standard Inconel 718 due to the existence of low melting B-bearing phase. 展开更多

Advanced high-strength steel ingots with total lanthanum(TLa)contents of 0,15×10^(–6),86×10^(–6)and 360×10^(–6)were prepared through laboratory experiments. The modification of inclusions and the variation of the as-cast microstructure with the content of lanthanum in the high-strength steel were analyzed. The result showed that with the increase in the TLa content in the steel from 0 to 360×10^(–6),the modification path of inclusions in the as-cast steel was Al2O_(3)and calcium aluminate→LaAlO_(3)→La_(2)O_(2)S→La_(2)O_(2)S–La2O_(3).The addition of La in the high-strength steel significantly refined the solidification structures. With the increase in the TLa content in the steel from 0 to 360×10^(–6),the ratio of the equiaxed crystal region in the macrostructure increased from 30.1%to 50.7%,the proportion of the high-angle grain boundary in the microstructure increased from 36.9%to 69.8%,and the area fraction of the acicular ferrite and the bainite increased from 0 to 93.3%.Inclusions of LaAlO_(3),La_(2)O_(2)S and La2O_(3)in the La-containing steel could act as heterogeneous nucleation cores ofα-Fe during the solidification. With the increase in the TLa content in the steel, the number density of inclusions that could act as effective heterogeneous nucleation cores in the steel gradually increased, which enlarged the ratio of the equiaxed crystal region and the proportion of intragranular acicular ferrite, and refined the as-cast microstructure of the high-strength steel. 展开更多

Mg-14Li-1Al (LA141), LA141-0.3Y, LA141-0.3Sr, and LA141-0.3Y-0.3Sr alloys were prepared in an induction furnace in the argon atmosphere. The microstructures of these alloys were investigated through scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The results show that yttrium and/or strontium additions produce a strong grain refining effect in LA141 alloy. The mean grain sizes of the alloys with addition of Y and/or Sr are reduced remarkably from 600 to 500, 260, 230 μm, respectively. Al 2 Y, Al 4 Sr and Mg 17 Sr 2 phases with different morphologies are verified and exist inside the grain or at the grain boundaries, thus possibly act as heterogeneous nucleation sites and pin up grain boundaries, which restrain the grain growth. 展开更多

The as-cast microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg?4Zn?xY?1Ca (x=1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0, mass fraction, %) alloys were investigated and compared. The results indicate that all the as-cast alloys are mainly composed ofα-Mg, Mg2Ca, Ca2Mg6Zn3,I (Mg3YZn6) andW (Mg3Y2Zn3) phases. However, with Y content increasing from 0.86% to 2.68%, the amount of the Ca2Mg6Zn3 phase gradually decreases but that of theI (Mg3YZn6) andW (Mg3Y2Zn3) phases gradually increases. Furthermore, an increase in Y content from 0.86% to 2.68% also causes the grain size of the as-cast alloys to gradually decrease. In addition, the tensile and creep properties of the as-cast alloys vary with Y content. Namely, with Y content increasing from 0.86% to 2.68%, the creep properties gradually increase, whereas the tensile properties firstly increase and attain the maximum at 1.77% Y, beyond that they decrease. Amongst the as-cast alloys with 0.86% Y, 1.19% Y, 1.77% Y and 2.68% Y, the alloy with 1.77% Y exhibits the relatively optimal tensile and creep properties. 展开更多

In this work two new alloys were obtained by extrapolation from a well-known high entropy alloy, the equimolar CoNiFeMnCr one. This was done by the addition of carbon and of tantalum,Ta being one of the strongest MC-former elements. They were produced by conventional casting under inert atmosphere. The obtained microstructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction, metallography, electron microscopy, and energy dispersion spectrometry.Their hardness was also measured by hardness indentation. In parallel, the original CoNiFeMnCr alloy was also synthesized and characterized for comparison. The reference HEA alloy is single-phased with an austenitic structure, while the two{Ta,C}-added alloys are double-phased,with an austenitic matrix and interdendritic script-like TaC carbides. The matrixes of these HEA/TaC alloy are equivalent to an equimolar CoNiFeMnCr alloy to which 2 wt.%Ta is present in solid solution. The presence of the TaC carbides caused a significant increase in hardness which suggests that the HEA/TaC alloys may be mechanically stronger than the HEA reference alloy at high temperature. 展开更多

It has been reported that the element scandium (Sc) is the most effective modificator which can significantly refine the grain size, prohibit recrystallization process and increase the strength.Adding trace of Sc in 7000 series aluminum alloys is considered to be an effective way to modify its microstructure and promote mechanical properties. In order to study the effect of Sc element on ascast microstructure of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr alloy, ingots containing different amounts of Sc were prepared by ferrous-mold cast.Microstructures were characterized by means of differential scanning calorimeter (DSC),X-ray diffraction (XRD),optical microscope (OM) and scanning electrical microscope (SEM).The results indicate that when the Sc level exceeds a critical concentration,A13(Sc,Zr) primary phase would form in the melt and act as an efficient nucleant, resulting in very refined grain and an equiaxed grain structure.Sc element reduces the number of eutectic phases formed during solidification, coupled with an increase in the concentration of major alloying elements retained in the solute. This behavior suggests possible benefits in improving the integrated properties of terminal products. 展开更多

The content and kind of trace elements in magnesium alloys have important effects on their ascast and semi-solid microstructures. In this research work, effects of trace Cr on as-cast and semi-solid microstructures of ZC61 magnesium alloy were investigated by metal mold casting and semi-solid isothermal heat treatment. The results show that the addition of Cr can refine the α-Mg phase without generating a new phase, noticeably change the eutectic phase, and decrease the average size of solid particles at the same isothermal heat treatment conditions. Non-dendritic microstructures of all alloys are constituted of α_1-Mg phases, α_2-Mg phases and eutectic phases after water quenching. With isothermal temperature increased or holding time prolonged, the eutectic microstructure(α-Mg+MgZn_2+CuMgZn) at the grain boundaries in as-cast alloy is melted preferentially and then turned into semi-solid non-dendritic microstructure by processes of initial coarsening, microstructure separation, spheroidizing and final coarsening. Especially when the ZC61-0.1 Cr alloy was treated at 585 ℃ for 30 min, the ideal non-dendritic microstructure can be obtained, and the corresponding solid particle size and shape factor were 37.5 μm and 1.33, respectively. The coarsening process of solid α-Mg phase at higher temperature or longer time, which is affected by both combining growth and Ostwald ripening mechanism, is refrained when Cr is added to the ZC61 alloy. 展开更多

A new method (liquidus casting) was used for 356 Al alloy semi-solid slurry making. The structures of 356 Al alloy cast by a Fe mould and semi-continuous casting machine at different temperatures were investigated. How the globular grains form was also discussed. The results show that either being cast by single Fe mould or semi-continuous machine, the micro structures are not conventional dendrites but fine and net-globular grains. The average gram size is smaller than 30μm and suitable enough for thixoforming, meanwhile it can improve the mechanical properties of following products. Under the suitable casting velocity and cooling intensity, most of global grains prolong their global growth and collide with each other before dendritic growth because of the large amount of the nucleation sites. 展开更多

In order to research the different effects of Ce on as-cast microstructure of AZ91 magnesium alloy under different solidifi- cation rates, the die-cast samples with different diameters and different Ce contents were prepared, and some characteristics of as-cast microstructure were analyzed. The results showed that Ce could refine grain size, decrease the fraction of eutectic β-Mg17A112 phase, form A14Ce phase and decrease solid solution of A1 in the α-Mg matrix, but the above behaviors of Ce would be weakened under higher solidification rate. The essential reason for Ce to affect as-cast microstructure was that the Ce and A1 concentrated in the liquid phase in front of solid/liquid interface during solidification because Ce itself is difficult to solid solute in α-Mg matrix and inhibits solid solution of AI in α-Mg matrix. However, the dynamic condition of concentration of Ce, A1 would be changed when solidifica- tion rate varied, resulting in different influence extents of Ce on as-cast microstructure under different solidification rates. 展开更多

The results indicate that adding 1.0 wt.% Ca to Mg-5Zn-5Sn alloy can effectively refine the as-cast microstructure of the alloy, and the CaMgSn phase with high thermal stability is formed in the alloy. In addition, adding 1.0 wt.% Ca to Mg-5Zn-5Sn alloy can also improve the creep properties of the alloy. After adding 1.0 wt.% Ca to Mg-5Zn-5Sn alloy, the second creep rate of the alloy at 150℃ and 50 MPa for 100 h decreases from 4.67 ×10^-8 to 1.43 × 10^-8 s^-1. The effects of cooling rates corresponding to different diameters of the steel mould and laser surface melting(LSM)on the as-cast microstructures of Mg-9Al-xSi(x=1,3)(mass fraction,%)alloys were investigated by XRD and OM.The results show that obvious refinement of the alloy microstructure is obtained with increasing cooling rate by conventional ingot metallurgy. However, no evident modified morphologies of both dendritic primary Mg2Si and Chinese script eutectic Mg2Si in the Mg-Al-Si alloy occurs. Surprisingly, the morphologies of Mg2Si phases within the laser-melted Mg-Al-Si alloy transform drastically from both coarse Chinese script shape for the eutectic Mg2Si and dendrite for the primary Mg2Si to fine spherical particles with an average size of about 3μm due to the rapid cooling of the melted layer, and the Mg2Si particulates distribute more uniformly in theα-Mg matrix. 展开更多
